All of this commentary with 5 minutes left of them being open. I realize that they probably wanted to go home for the evening and not be there all night, but that was extremely unprofessional and rude, not to mention that they did this very same thing to two other vehicles in front of me prior to me pulling up to the speaker. If I had been working at this restaurant, I know that we would've stayed open until the actual closing time and we would have waited on anybody that had showed up even if it was five minutes prior to the actual "closing time" of the restaurant. This makes these people look like they are too lazy to make three customers happy, even though I know that I would not have ordered a very large order from them in the first place. I was almost at a point where I needed to eat some food to take some medicine and it was getting to be medically necessary for me to eat something, which really made me mad at them.

Yes, what is more American than McDonald's? The peddlers of cheap, processed "foods," who have perfected the methods of mass production to bring a variety of foreign cuisines like French Fries, the German Hamburger, and even the American apple pie to be sold to the masses. Never mind the little things like obesity and the like. The Romans left behind aqueducts. The British left behind railroads. And our Empire leaves behind the Golden Arches. This McDonald's stands out because of the large indoor playland. Alas if only they had that when I was a tot. Also there is a double drive thru- which I believe is becoming the new norm. Aside from these things it was like almost every other McDonald's found across this great land: burgers and fries served up quick in a semi-cozy dinning room from the 1990's. Despite all the things that are wrong with Mickey D's, sometimes you really just crave it for some real reason. Biting into a cheap cheese burger and then writing a snarky yelp review can really make one feel better- well at least until the stomach ache an hour later.

But what I remember most of all is the food, particularly ducking into a little shop off a piazza somewhere to grab whatever I could buy and eat while we walked to our next sightseeing destination--a pastry, a slice of pizza, or a sandwich. At Alveo, I almost feel like I'm right back there. The restaurant is small and lively, not a place to linger exactly but a place where you can tell you'll be taken care of. Just as many patrons are ordering to go as they are to stay. And the sandwiches? Good enough to power many, many steps of sightseeing across cobblestones, or just get you through the afternoon at your home or office in Cincinnati. They've absolutely nailed the ingredients on every sandwich I've tried, with high-quality components selected specifically for how they go together. (Like those little sandwich shops in Europe, there are no substitutions here--unless you'd like gluten free bread.) The bread? Unreal how it can hold these constructions together while being soft and delicious. The meats? Perfection. The cheese? Incredible. That pistachio stuff? I see it in my dreams. The one area where Alveo definitely deviates from its European brethren is portion size--these sandwiches are huge! They come in a paper wrapper, inside a to-go box, and believe me, you will probably need it. Each time I've been to Alveo I've ended up eating about half the sandwich for lunch and the rest for dinner, maybe with a snack in between, and felt perfectly satisfied for the day. So, yes, the $20+ price tag might discourage you, but don't let it. It's a $20 investment in a very, very delicious day.
