Giving this 2 stars only because of past service. I understand being short staffed and busy but there really is no excuse for the last visit. Just got a couple breakfast sandwiches to go. It took almost 40min to get the order and that was after waiting about 15min just to place the order. The wait wouldn't have been a problem if the food would have been better. The sandwiches if that's what you want to call them were torn apart and just a mess. Overly greasy, over cooked and not edible. Disappointed in the service and food. Love Empress Chili so we were excited to give this place a try. I loved the chili cheese fries and will be coming back for more. Breakfast is served all day so the kids got French toast and an order of the pancakes. These pancakes are the largest pancakes I have ever seen and they were delicious. I also need to point out that the service was great. She was attentive and helped us with making the best selections by asking questions and making suggestions. read more

By far the worst experience I've ever had here. Asked for a hot water with lemon & boiling water was brought in a plastic cup. Granddaughters ordered milkshakes & received flavored, frothy milk. Don't know what is going on here but for as long as we've been coming here, we may not be back. If less than 1 star was possible, that's what I would leave. read more

Howie's Diner is not too bad for a truck stop diner. It looks like they're putting some money back into this location with the new pumps, which is a positive sign. I love this place -- it's one of my favorites! Their deep-fried Oreos are amazing. I've had about five different servers from coming here so often; almost all of them have been super friendly and kind. Only one server hasn't been very friendly, but the rest truly make up for it. The food can vary a little depending on the shift, but overall it's really good. That's pretty normal for restaurants, and I'm not going to be harsh about it -- I get that sometimes places are busy and sometimes they're not. read more

Had heard a lot about this 24 hour place and finally got to pay them a visit. I had a biscuit and gravy, an Empress 4 way and a cheese coney. The food was basically OK--nothing to write home about. Hadn't had Empress chili in about 20 years, so I wanted to see if it was the same as I remembered it. Well, maybe so. Coney was so soggy I could hardly eat it..Service was friendly but very slow, even though the place was about half empty. But I wasn't really in a hurry. Dollar-for-dollar, you get a pretty good deal here, and you can get anything on the menu any time they're open which is 24 hours, so great for a real late nite snack. The place was dirty especially considering the bathrooms, those were absolutely disgusting and clearly hadn't been cleaned in forever. However, the worst part of my experience was the manager, Adam. Good local diner. Very, very casual diner. What I mean by that is that you sit down and they get your drink orders. Then, about 15 to 20 minutes later. They ask you what you want to eat. Then, 25 minutes later, you get your food ready period I understand that they're short-staffed. However, waiting for at least an hour and twenty minutes to order and get food is ridiculous. Howies is a nice mom and pop place to park your truck and have a good home cooked meal. They had smiling faces and very good service. The young waitress actually loves her job, in which is rare these days and even the cashier ask how my day was going. Definitely a place I'd visit again if I'm in the state. The restaurant is a truck stop diner, so if you want it to be "fancy" then this isn't the place for you!! With that said, we've gone here more than one time this year and the servers have always been nice and the food and coffee good. Like I've said in my other reviews, customers need to be patient and nice to the few employees that have showed up to work HARD! Today we went to the diner at 10ish and it was packed, so we sat at the bar. Amanda was our server. I won't lie our food took a very long time to come to the table. In that time we saw Amanda seat more people, bus the tables, take orders and on top of that kindly train a new waitress! They have a sign behind the bar, "Be nice or leave". I've lived within a few miles of Howie's Diner for YEARS (I drive by it every single day), and I'm so mad at myself that it took me so long to stop in and try it out. My boyfriend and I were craving a hearty breakfast meal - not a chain restaurant - and he suggested Howie's. Honestly, I was hesitant to agree because this place is quite literally inside of a gas station / truck stop. Let me just say, I am SO glad I was talked in to going here and I can't wait to go back again and again. The service was great! Our server was friendly and attentive. They have GREAT coffee - I know it isn't hard to make a cup of coffee but Howie's coffee is something special. I ordered the Hoosier Eggs Breakfast with a side of goetta and it was delicious. I was starving and barely finished half of my meal because it was so much food. They offer a lengthy menu with great lunch/dinner options that I can't wait to try soon. I work overnights on the weekends, so when you come in to work at midnight and your "lunch break" is at 5am, choices are kind of slim. But there's only so much White Castle and Waffle House you can eat, so I went with the only other option that was open - Howie's. It has now become my go-to most nights for food. Everything I've had from there has been so delicious! The Deep Fried Oreos are probably the closest I'll ever come to experiencing the Fried Food Fiesta known as the Texas State Fair. Anyway, I digress. Believe it or not, there is online ordering available through DoorDash. I always take my food to-go, so being able to order it and it usually be ready when I get there is super convenient. Although I've never dined in, the staff has always been super friendly when I come to pick up my food. And I also have to give a shout out to the Sinclair crew at the attached gas station. A diner. More of a truck stop. Easy access off the highway. But hard to get back on the highway since you cannot take a left turn out of the parking lot. Huge portions. Every thing on the menu was 3 eggs or 3pancakes. 3 of everything. And no fresh fruit. We chose the place since it was in Indiana. And we were on the Cincinnati beltway. The waitresses are friendly and the food comes out quick. Located adjoining a gas station, it's a local pit stop for truckers and locals looking to grab a hot and fresh meal. But don't be fooled by the locale, this diner is well deserving of many praise and will fill an empty stomach. The portions are generous and the food is fresh. The warm, Homemade biscuits are some of the best in the area. The restaurant is clean and can get busy during brunch but it's usually quick to get a table. Give this place a visit if you're looking to cure a hangover or just need a nice meal served alongside some friendly faces. Another two visits in one post job here. In the first visit I went the lunch route with the Shrimp Dinner with fries and hushpuppies. The shrimp was very middle of the road not bad by any stretch but nothing earth shattering either. Decent crunch and okayish flavour in the batter but I'll tell you what that cocktail sauce was top notch. A good amount of horseradish in it to give it a proper kick and help elevate the otherwise average shrimp. The fries were fine and the hushpuppies were good although not quite Long John Silver's good. The Cheese Fry/Potato Wedge things we got as an appetizer were quite good too. Ranch was the right call for a dip here. For my second visit of this review I went for the Big Bopper Breakfast. It consists of a huge pork tenderloin stuffed (more folded over omelet style) with two eggs (I got fried over medium), hashbrowns, and cheese. All of that was covered by sausage gravy and served with 2 biscuits. This was a very creative breakfast and was very delicious. Everything worked very well together and don't sleep on their gravy here. It's a darn good one. This will feed the heartiest fat guy appetite like myself. The service was good on these two visits even though I had to wait for my cocktail sauce to be made on the first visit it was very worth it in the end. Great stuff. read more

Over priced greasy spoon. Service is mediocre at best. There is no place in the resturant for servers to wash their hands. Dirty plates are picked up from tables and hands not washed. The restrooms are located on the other side of the building in the convenience store of the truck stop. Very uncomfortable because the air conditioning goes out the doors with truckers constantly coming in to fuel, shop, eat and use the restrooms. You will sweat in your food. Parking is limited. Semi trucks go in and out. It is a truck stop. There is a lot of gravel. I would pass this place up and go to Waffle House. read more

We were in Lawrenceburg on business and wanted a sit-down breakfast place that wasn't a chain. Found Howie's Diner on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We missed it the first time because I wasn't looking for a gas station. Go in the front door and turn left and you are in the diner. I ordered a skillet with ham, onions, and cheese with scrambled eggs. I asked for soft scrambled eggs without any scorch and the kitchen prepared them perfectly! My husband ordered basted eggs, but our server didn't know what that was, so I explained they are sort of like sunny-side up but cooked with a lid over them. She told the cook and his eggs were perfect. He especially loved the bacon -- super crispy and flavorful. Most of the other folks there looked like regulars and the servers all seemed to know them. Stopped in recently and there menu has changed a lot. They use to have fresh fried chicken dinners and you could order fresh cooked chicken wings. They no longer have that.
