The bread was very fresh. I really enjoyed the chips they carry from the Great Lakes Potato Chip company. I had the jalapeño flavor chips. They went very well with my sandwich. It's stops like this one here that I need to thank my fellow yp'ers! I was immediately offered a sample of the chicken salad. Nice touch! I started with a tomato bisque soup which was by far the best I've had! In addition to the depth of flavor it was served hot! The potato salad was creamy and a very nice mix without any one ingredient including the potato itself to dominate this side dish. Well done! The toasted wheat chucked salad sandwich was outstanding! This alone make the trip worthwhile. It s served with a healthy slice of pickle which was slightly sour, just how it should be. A six star stop! First time ever for 6 stars for me. This is one of those moments where I am disappointed I cannot give a business six out of five stars. Chefs Café truly surpasses expectations and every way. The number one thing I have to call out first is the exemplary kindness and a attentiveness of the staff. They know all of their regulars by name and make a point to stop and have a conversation with them as they pop in and the owners walk around the dining room to chat with people . The line going was going out the door and down the sidewalk-- clearly a neighborhood favorite. After one bite of my turkey Ruben special, I can see why. The sandwich and side were the perfect size meal, and every bite was delicious. It's amazing that they make the majority of their products in house, and you can really taste the freshness. They are known for their famous chicken salad, and after sampling the buffalo chicken salad (the only other flavor they make), I can see why. I grabbed a half pound container to go. My husband got a regular Reuben sandwich. We both got a deli pickle and a mustard-based potato salad as our side. Dining room is spacious and decorated like a classic deli in every way. We ordered a chicken salad sandwich and a BLT for takeout. They were both good. I am a chicken salad snob and prefer a chunky chicken salad; the flavor was nice, but it was a little too mushy for me. The BLT was great and proportioned well. The pasta salad side was wonderfully smooth and tart at the same time. The brownies are individually wrapped and labeled "corner", "side", or "middle", and they are seriously delicious...the perfect texture and chocolate flavor. Do NOT leave without one! I'm a big fan of any sort of salad -- egg salad chicken salad tuna salad etc. so you can guess my anticipation from the promise of world famous chicken salad. But wasn't my fault is that they were very loudly talking about some thing and shitting on Joe Biden. My personal belief is Joe Biden is the only rational human being that has been or will be in the White House in recent times so I was a little perturbed by this notion. Politics aside I decided to try the world famous chicken salad on rye bread. The croissant looks awesome but it does cost $1.25 extra so I decided to abstain. They let you add anything you want on it and they will toast the bread for you if you like. I have to say I understand why it is world-famous... It's a funny claim but in all honesty one of the best chicken salad I've ever had in my life. Also came with a pickle spear and you got to choose a side... I got the potato salad as it was the most interesting option but still a little underwhelming. Not bad just not life-changing. John that the vibe inside was nice and family friendly like everyone knew the two owners who were readily there to help and were very nice. The female of the two seem to be wearing a pair of landscaping clear glasses upside down over her mouth as a mask? Not sure what to make of this.... also the interiorfeels a little picnic like an outdated. Not my personal preference by any means. Stopped in to Chef's Cafe for lunch today. Haven't been there for years. What a pleasant surprise. Warmly greeted when we walked in the door, I quickly realized this was going to be a great place for lunch. Since we aren't regulars there, the new owners, Laurie and her husband welcomed us and helped us through the menu on the wall behind them. They made suggestions and offered a taste of the "World famous chicken salad". There are lot's of deli sandwiches and subs plus one or two soups on the menu. I had the Joe's Royal Sub. It was very good! Served warm, it had plenty of filling and a great flavor. The sandwiches and subs all come with a side of your choice. My wife had 1/2 of a Chicken salad sandwich on toasted rye w/ homemade apple sauce and said it was very good. The Cafe is open 7am-3pm M-F. Lots of people appear to carry out, but dine in is available. The Cafe was clean and bright. Kind of made me smile to be in there. I'd recommend this place for sure. They do catering and you can order ahead if you want to. BTW the brownies were great for dessert. read more

What great deli... I tried the chicken salad, egg salad, potato salad, and soup (Italian wedding). All were great! The chicken salad was perfect. No fruits no nuts...Just delicious chicken shedded and mixed with great seasoning. It's not a sweet chicken salad. I'm glad I bought a pound!!! The potato was creamy with much chunks of potatoes and great texture. The egg salad was a more dryer less creamy. Loved the celery and carrot in it. I only bought a half pound. The sign on the building is 30ft wide and in huge graphics it says WORLD FAMOUS CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH and, only down in tiny tiny writing in the corner, it says Chef's Cafe. Driving by, I thought that was the name of the restaurant and that's all they sold. But I mean, it was probably the best chicken salad sandwich I've ever had, and they've 100% earned that level of advertisement. We've been wanting stop by there for a long time. We finally did it today. Every person in there was very knowledgeable, very friendly and helpful. My wife got the chicken salad and I got an Italian sub. The Italian sub was really good. The chicken salad sandwich was out of this world. We were trying to be respectful to the owners and the employees because they were very busy, but they went out of their way to talk to us, see how we're doing and to see how the food taste. I buy this brand every time I go to Jungle Jim's and it is usually one of the first items I eat when I get home (which say a lot considering the delicacies I pick up at foodie wonderland). Their website boasts that they've sold over 106,000 pounds of chicken salad, so I guess I'm not the only one devouring the creamy treat. Chef's Cafe's salad is rich and simply seasoned without too much mayo or onions. The real star of the spread is the tender chicken breast. With so many exotic varieties of chicken salad on the market, Chef's Cafe sticks to a classic, no-frills recipes and nails it. Though I've never eaten at Fields-Ertel delicatessen, I'd definitely give it a try when I'm in the area. Until then, I'll keep stocking up at Jungle Jim's. read more

I was introduced to this mom-shop by some co-workers, hailing their "world famous chicken salad." I couldn't pass it up. The place is small. Seating maybe 20-25 people at a time, and most seemed to get their meal to go. The staff were friendly, forthright and prompt. The menu is scratched on chalkboard behind the counter which houses meats for this deli-style shop. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich on a croissant as suggested by the staff along with a side of potato salad and a craft root-beer. TASTY! I don't know if it's the world's best chicken salad, but it was very good. Too bad this place is only open for lunch. I'd love to check them out again, but they're a fair distance from the office and I'm not one to venture that way on the weekend. That shouldn't stop you if you're in the area though. I decided to come here for the famous chicken salad on Friday for lunch. I arrived around 1230 and it was a steady crowd. As other reviewers have noted it is a real deli with slicers and sandwiches etc.. I decided on the chicken salad on a pretzel bun with potato salad and a lemonade. My total cost was around 9.50 for everything and that is a little more than I would spend on a lunch, but it was my first time there had to splurge next time I will get the chicken salad on regular bread and save the dollar for the pretzel bun and bring my own water. The chicken salad was good, but I don't think it's the best I have tried. I would go back and try a sandwich. read more

We all love shiny new toys. As kids it could be a fire truck or doll. As adults it might be that new car you or an outfit you have your eye on. So true is it with restaurants. We are all excited when a new place opens. How is the ambiance? Is the food any good? Is the service a plus or minus? This review is NOT about something new. It is about something tried and true. Like a best friend from grade school or that shirt you can't get rid of no matter how ratty is gets. Chef's Café is located on Field's Ertle just past Butler Warren Road and has been around for 26 years. It is very clean inside, but it is not decked out in the latest décor. There are about a dozen tables where you can eat a great lunch (NO it is not open for dinner) Hours are 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. The menu is small, but everything on it, and yes, I mean everything is REALLY good. They are known for their "World Famous Chicken Salad." BTW I just found out the Jungle Jim's at Eastgate carries this product. It will run you $7.50 and comes with a small side and a pickle spear. I have tried it on bread and a croissant, but I highly recommend the pretzel roll. There is a lot of salad on the sandwich and yes it will leak out. No worries they provide a fork. The egg and tuna salads (also $7.50 each) sandwiches are also top notch. You can also get all these in a salad form if sandwiches are not your thing. I also like the Reubens ($8.50) and the roasted turkey breast ($7.50). All their sandwiches can be upgraded to a double decker (Add $4) or are offered as a half-sandwich deal (only $5) Homemade soups are made daily including chicken gumbo (Mon), navy bean (Tues), chicken noodle, chili (Wed), chicken dumpling (Thurs) and Boston clam chowder (Fri). $3.25 for an 8 oz. serving! Bowls are $4.25 and a jumbo (2 cup) portion is $5.25. Chef's Café offers delivery to local businesses. They have box lunches, sandwich trays, meat and cheese trays and salads.
