I used to go to Lucy's Diner often for lunch when I worked and lived on that side of town. The service was always good, and the diner ambiance was nice. It's a simple diner, which isn't a bad thing. While in the area, I wanted to find a diner for a quick bite. It was a Sunday and we were immediately told that they are Breakfast only on Sunday. I'm not certain if this is every Sunday or just that day, so keep that in mind. The service was fast and friendly. It wasn't very busy when we stopped in so we didn't have to wait on anything. I had ordered the Strawberry Pancakes. Not to be discouraging, but they weren't anything special. The cakes themselves were quite dense and heavy, so they filled you up easily. The strawberries on top were little to be desired. It was more of a strawberry jam that was put on top. Considering that a solid strawberry topping consists of a few minutes of cooking up fresh strawberries, sugar and water, I was disappointed with the topping. It truly is a bare bones diner. Nothing fancy, but that's okay. Good food and good service goes miles above anything else. They've got the service down perfectly. The only other thing that might be a helpful, yet discouraging, comment would be the front desk area. When you walk in, there is a front counter that you pay at. It's very visible and it's the first thing you see when you walk in. You see the counter and a fish tank right behind it. The state of the counter and the fish tank need work. The counter is cluttered and just looks dirty. Now, if this was an office in the back, so be it. My office is sometimes a cluttered mess. But this dusty cluttered mess is right in the front and center of this restaurant. I can't help but think what areas look like that I can't see. The fish tank would be a nice touch of ambiance however it too is pretty dank and dirty looking. If you're going to have it right there where everyone can see, you need to put a little effort into making it presentable. These may sound like harsh points, but they are honest observations. Would I go back? It's not very local to me, so probably not. But, if I was in the area, I would absolutely give Lucy's Diner another shot at lunch. We stopped in to grab a bite around 115p on a sunday - greeted with "you want breakfast or lunch or what" we knew they closed at 2p so we said "whatever is easiest". Told to find a seat and we could only order breakfast, fine, no big! I was looking for a midway point for a short business meeting and remembered Lucy's. I had been there a couple of times with a friend that lives around the corner. The food was your typical neighborhood restaurant/diner fare, service was good enough so I suggested Lucy's for our meeting. I arrived at 12:09pm on a rainy Friday. The waiter came and I ordered a bacon sandwich and asked for a coffee in a to go cup. I quickly changed my mind and decided I would get the whole thing to go. He said 'she' would ring me up at the register. We had our meeting, chatted for a few minutes. After about 15 minutes I was told my food was done. We concluded our short meeting and I went to the counter to pay at 12:36pm. I told Lucy, the owner that was my food next to her. She asked what happened to the lady that was with me, I said she didn't eat. She says to me, 'You don't just come sit. It is for to order food.' I told her, "I did order food. You're ringing it up now." She says, 'No this not McDonald's you don't just come and sit here and talk. You eat here. So I resisted the urge to tell what she was a rude bitch. Instead I just asked for cream for my coffee. She said , it was in the bag. I told her I needed more. She turned and walked away mumbling. I asked her for sugar. "She told me to get if off the table." I said, "Excuse me?" 'Get. Off. Table. So I went and got off table. Well i was out and about at Menards today. I drove home down reading road. As I was driving through the city of Reading I spotted Lucy's Diner. Well it was lunch time and I twere hungry. So I circled back to their parking lot. Went inside. Was skeptical since a lot of the tiles inside the front door were missing their corners. Since I was now inside, and did not detect any weird odors. I preceded to sit in a booth near the kitchen. The friendliest waiter immediately brought me a menu and welcomed me. Informed me that I could never get a sammich anywhere that had has much bacon as their blt. Well I no longer eat bacon since I had a heart attack. I checked the menu over carefully and found the list of double deckers. I inquired if they had rare or even medium rare roast beef. Regretfully they do not. Lucy said they can not get it. Hmmm more thoughts of oh poop I picked a bad place. I ordered a ham and beef double decker with a side of awesome frys( says so on the menu). Well much to my shegrin the frys were awesome and super hot . The double decker was really good. I will most assuredly return . I really liked the food and the staff was extremely nice and friendly. If you order an iced beverage, especially on Sunday, be advised you may not get it and if you do, do not expect a refill. The owner is nasty, I will not be back. If you want a good breakfast experience, go to the Bridge House on Benson Street. Food is great as well as the service and they actually have an ice machine. And they offer you a refill. Ate here with wife tonite. Their hours are not currently listed on Yelp, but they closed tonite at 7 (we got there at 6:50) The special was meat loaf (one of my favorites) but not listed on the menu, so that's what I got, It came with mashed potatoes and green beans. Also had a lettuce and tomato salad and a bowl of vegetable soup--the latter was similar to Frisch's, but homemade and good. We got several pieces of lemon meringue pie to take home.Wife had a burger and fries which she liked. Service was prompt and friendly. Prices are reasonable--a lot of bang for your buck. I called today to ask if they were hiring. The first time i called i said " Hi is this Lucy Diner." The lady over the phone was extremely rude and said, "sorry this is a restaurant you have the wrong number" I then said, "I'm sorry this isn't Lucys Diner?" The lady hung up on me before i could even complete my sentence. The second time i called I said "Hi i was calling to ask if you were hiring for waitress or dishwasher" The woman over the phone interrupted me "No! No! No! No!" Furious by her rudeness i hung up the phone saying "Yall Rude asf" and i felt bad honestly i called back the 3rd time saying, "you guys need to work on your customer services, you are beyond rude!" Never coming back! Came here on a Sunday morning to have brunch with a bridal party of 5 before heading over to the bridal district to go wedding dress shopping with our bride. The food was great and our server was nice. The problem is the owner herself. She's supposed to be the face of her business and she was one of the rudest people we have ever met. She was checking our party out up at the front desk (which is where you have to pay) and we all had separate checks, which she immediately voiced that she was annoyed with, saying "why couldn't one of you just handle it". She then asked if any of us had cash and when we replied that we didn't, she kept repeating "cash? You don't have cash?!". We then asked if she'd accept card and she replied "yes, but cash is faster". To be clear, the place was not busy. When we got there, there was no wait. We sat at a table right by the door and anyone who walked in was told they could go ahead and sit wherever they want. So we were very confused why she was rushing us and giving us a rough time with the separate checks and not having cash. She then asked if we were a bridal party going over to the bridal district. We said yes and she responded with "of course you are" in a very condescending tone. I was one of the last of our party to check out. I always pull out my phone and use the calculator app to figure out 20% tip. When I did this, she immediately said while laughing, "oh honey, are you serious? Did you not go to school?!". We were all shocked and immediately called her out saying how rude she was being. We asked if she was the owner, which she replied she was. We then repeated how rude she was with us, and left. Lucy's is right down the hill from our home but we haven't eaten here in a few years. We were in a hurry today and decided to stop in since it's close to the house. It's the typical greasy diner you find in most small towns. Nothing special but edible and where all the locals eat. My husband ordered an unsweetened ice-tea and a 5-way chili spaghetti. I ordered a water, a 1/4 pound cheese burger and the 'Amazing Fries'. My husband liked the 5-way and said, "It's ok." My burger was cold and the cheese was unmelted. Which was weird since it was cooked thoroughly. (I wasn't given an option on how to have it cooked). It tasted like a frozen partially soy burger that had been microwaved. The Amazing Fries were not amazing. They are a small order for the price, although it was plenty for me. They are waffle fries with Lawry's salt on them. The service was fine and the price is affordable. But, we likely won't stop in again for awhile. read more

It doesn't matter how good your food is... It's also how you treat your guest. We had a horrible experience with the owner during check out. Food was great! Our server was so sweet! We were having a great time...but once it was time to check out things unfortunately went down hill very quickly. So we wanted to have Sunday brunch at Lucy's Diner, because I used to always come here as a kid with my parents and at noon I had an appointment for me to try on wedding dresses at blush bridal. We get ready to go up to the front counter to pay and we are in a great mood. The owner comes up to the register and was already frustrated with us that we were all paying separately and not together...there was 5 of us. Then she proceeded to be aggravated with us that we were using credit cards and not cash. And kept insisting that she wanted cash. Oh my goodness...we visit Lucy's every year as we meet family from IN and KY. I would say the service has always been "ok", but today was a horrible experience. The poor server (young lady) was overwhelmed with our party of 12 and the fact she was the only server, but she was kind and sweet. We were as patient as we possible considering that our food began to arrive before anyone had a drink. The food was "ok", not piping hot by any means, but edible. The owner was downright nasty and unkind...the kindest words thatI can use...she deserves much worse description. She was rude to our group on multiple occasions (when we inquired about missing items we had ordered etc...NEVER once apologizing, just basically grunting and making terrible facial expressions). THEN she snapped at the poor server for giving several of us styrofoam cups for our drinks snd told her "no more!!"!! We have been driving past for years with a note that we should try it "someday". Today we had lunch there. It will not be our last visit. My son and grandson had the burgers. My grandson could not stop raving about it. Everything is freshly cooked. And, it shows. I had their roast beef double decker. It was really good. Everything I expect from a diner double decker. I also had their chili. It was fantastic. This is the kind of chili Gold Star and Skyline want to be when they grow up. Really, really decent. Hailey(?) Was our waitress. She was friendly, efficient and accurate. I am terrible with names. I hope I am close. The only reason for 4 stars is the fact that the French fries were cooked from frozen. Food was standard breakfast. Good but not outstanding. I was overcharged by hundreds of dollars and mentioned it on the spot. They did not know how to fix so we told them just don't run/close out the charge. They ran it anyway. Then called to have it reversed. Says I needed to come in to get cash. We did and then they said they didn't have the cash, come back later. Big hassle big inconvenience and they made it sound like I was inconveniencing them! Finally just disputed with CC company. Think I might have stumbled upon my new favorite breakfast spot in Cincinnati. I have always been a big waffle house fan because of the speed and simplicity but there aren't many close in my area. When you first come in you can sit anywhere you like and the waitresses are very friendly. Lucy's perfects the local feel and makes you feel like you're eating at home. I ordered an omelet with a side of french toast. The omelet was very filling and the French Toast was quite sweet. Good portions, good price, great taste. There is no such ting as an objective viewpoint. We all enter into every situation with bias based upon our upbringing, education, and past experiences. With this being said I so very much wanted to rate Lucy's 5 starts. It's independent and it competes with a McDonald's across the street. I was expecting to be blown away by the down-hominess of the place. Alas, however, because this place is immensely average. I ordered Goetta & Eggs with a small side of Biscuits & Gravy w/ coffee. The coffee was perfect; strong but not bitter. Plus the eggs were cooked exactly over-medium (which is rare. Most places opt to be on the over-easy side). However it's clear that their gravy comes from a can...a real disappointment. Plus, as another reviewer noted, their goetta is underdone. The service was adequate after my food arrived, but before that was a little sporadic. Like I said, I really wanted to rate this place a 5 and tell you to go support the little guy. I'm not saying you shouldn't go there, but it won't get the perfect breakfast that you might expect from a mom-and-pop operation. read more
