If you're trying to study though, you might find it a bit hard to focus on your work as the volume level was slightly on the louder side (there was a group chatting quite loudly along with birds chirping). As a big corp. coffee employee I like to spend my time at independent shops on my days off when I need a caffeine kick! Java on Ocean is by far my favourite of all spots I've been too in SF. Their owner and employees are the KINDEST workers and more welcoming than any other shop I've stepped foot into. They will take care of you despite just being a coffee house. Their espresso and tea are all so amazingly handcrafted and tasty! Their food is amazing, made in house, and quality ingredients! The store ambience is lax, open, sunny, and welcoming. I can't express how much, as a college student, this coffee shop has helped me look forward to getting out of my house and getting some work done! Decent coffees, but not as dark as I prefer. Great spot to lounge in with your laptop, free two hour wifi, and a good environment for studying/working...minus that parakeet in the back. Yeah I don't really understand the purpose of keeping that bird there. Then again, maybe that's an ambiance thing. Yeah I don't like it. Expensive food, but it's a cafe, what do you expect? That being said, sandwiches are tasty, and there is always a good selection of pastries for the day. Try to avoid peak times, and maybe there will be an outlet for you, because quite frankly, there aren't too many. This used to be a very old crusty pet store back in the day. From the 60's to the 80's. I was very happy when this coffee shop opened. I am glad they are surviving. Starbucks, Peets and others have over looked the avenue. I am glad. Small businesses need a chance to survive. Long live the independent coffee shop. They offer a great selection of pastries and beverages. They have a public bathroom, one of the few on that section of Ocean. FYI They have great art on the walls. There is outdoor seating. The cafe itself is very roomy with couches and tables. Java is one of the few places in the OMI where you can host a meeting. They have good space. Very diverse clientele. So this place has some mixed reviews, either people really love it or really don't from what I've seen. I've been coming to this coffee shop for a couple years now, on and off and every time I give it a try I'm disappointed. Hossam (the owner I believe-- the man with glasses) and his employees have been rude/ not welcoming almost every time I've been here. It's interesting because I do see them being kind to some of their customers, but it's not consistent and from what I've seen in other reviews, others have had this same experience. As for the food, it's mediocre and expensive. Today I ordered a chicken sandwich and explicitly said no mayo, but it came with it after all. Mistakes happen but when I told them about it, the owner Hossam responded very rude and told me to next time let them know ahead to not put mayo (WHICH I DID!), he made it seem like a huge inconvenience to remake it, and pinned the mistake on me when they were the ones who messed up. Not only this, but I had ordered a smoothie that they never rang up and when I let them know the cashier blamed me for not ordering it when I definitely did. These mistakes happen and I don't mind, but the energy and service I was met with made it a terrible experience. Usually businesses who care about customer satisfaction will apologize and sometimes even offer customers some sort of compensation, but instead I received negative energy on top of it all. Also the business owner replying to these negative reviews by saying "I'm sorry" does not cut it, I'm sorry and change is what is needed in order to improve on the quality of service that is given. read more

As a long-time resident of Ingleside, man do I wish there were better options for coffee shops in the neighborhood. The only good thing I can say about Java On Ocean is that it is a pleasant enough place to get some work done for a few hours, as long as it isn't too hot outside (no A/C, gets super warm and stuffy inside on hot days). They have a few birds inside (in cages), which I quite like since it adds some charm and a nice vibe to the place. Otherwise...beverages are extremely overpriced, especially for the area. I get a lot of work done in here. It is calm, cozy, serene, and has a lot of outlets! Very student friendly. Food and drinks are good, a little steep with pricing, but still worth buying for the atmosphere. It's called JAVA on Ocean, not Study Hall on Ocean. People keep talking about Hummus Wraps, so maybe it should be called Hummus on Ocean. Just...not Java. Please. The Java is blah. I've been here a few times, for different types of coffees. And...they have all the equipment for good coffee, but either that stuff is broken or they purchase really terrible beans. Every time I get a coffee here, its weak...and I tend to get triple/quad shots! If I'm saying the coffee is weak and its supposed to have that many espresso shots, I can't imagine what a normal coffee is like. Also...the price is a bit much. I suppose if I were to sit there and enjoy that coffee while partaking in the wifi, it wouldn't be as bad. But to come in, grab a scone and a coffee, and have to pay $9? We're not in FiDi, people! I'm sure that this is a very charming little coffee house, and it IS a great place to study or get work done, don't get me wrong. I'm just rating it based off the food. I ordered the lox bagel, and ah it was such a disappointing thing. There was barely and lox and the capers were extremely salty. It overpowered all my taste buds. The coffee and tea were just meh. The only negative point to this place is service. Otherwise: Amazing. Huge variety of snacks, desserts, baked goods, deli and fresh food menu. The next stop on my coffee shop excursion! I didn't like this coffee shop on my first visit but figured I should give it another shot. The enjoyables: - Lots of table space with couch seating. - Probably okay for large groups (5-6 people) because there's enough of open space. - REALLY enjoyable drip coffee, about $2.50 for a medium. I enjoyed it better than my vanilla latte because it seemed stronger and had more flavor. - HUGE variety of food: pastries, sandwiches, wraps, tamales, plus more! - My turkey, egg and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel was delicious. - Great location! Located off of the KT line and there's also parking in the nearby residential area. The not as enjoyables; - The space is essentially a box so sound resonates pretty good. This started to give me a bit of a headache after awhile but I was also studying for 5 hours straight. - Prices aren't always listed! I hate playing the guessing game with my wallet. - Medium Latte was about $4.50. The espresso wasn't that strong and didn't really have a creamy flavor. It tasted almost diluted. - No foam art and coffee was served in a disposable cup! So my latte didn't taste great OR look pretty. The hard truth is that this is my number 2 coffee shop on the block. I prefer Fog Lifter for my study /working purposes but that doesn't mean this isn't a decent coffee shop.. Because it is! Swing by and try their food menu and a drip. You'll like it. read more

Something about the colorful space, abundance of sunlight and plants, and cheerful birds chirping away that makes this a beautiful place to relax or be productive. They have a wide selection of drinks and food, lots of tables, and large windows that brighten up the space. A great study spot: Strong coffee, a wide array of decent food, and good spaces to spread out your stuff, either individually or as part of a study group. The huge windows also let in a lot of light, so it feels less dour than many similar spots. The only thing I might change is that while the music is almost always solid, they mar it somewhat by playing these ridiculous tweeting bird noises over it, whether for some jungle effect I don't know. But all in all a good spot; it's my go-to coffee spot when I'm driving in the city. read more

Came here twice. Once to get a latte before I went to school and another time to study for a few hours. I got a vanilla latte the first time I went and it tasted weird. Maybe because I'm so used to chain coffee shops and never had a real espresso that wasn't grinded, pounded, and poured straight from one machine. I felt like maybe the espresso shot had too much water in it. Second time i got the same drink but iced. $6 for a large vanilla latte?!! It wasn't even large! It looked more like medium to me. -___- But it was better than the hot latte I had. Besides their latte, I haven't tried anything else. I will come back though because I love the ambiance. Like other yelpers have said, it feels "homey." Great place to bring some friends to catch up with and even study with. Love the 2 birds in the coffee shop (though it'd be great if they had larger cages) and the middle eastern decor/feel. Quirky, airy, yet cozy. Java is a great spot to start your day, enjoy a sunny afternoon with a book and a class of hot chocolate, or to catch up with a friend. There's actually good variety in food, and it's all freshly made. I've had some sandwiches, bagels, and even a falafel wrap and they were all quite tasty. Fancy hot lattes, smoothies, old fashioned sodas.. you name it. The owner is really nice, and always remembers you. He seems to genuinely care and it makes the cafe that much more personal. Breakfast burrito review only! After hearing good things about the breakfast burrito here, it was time to try it on a sunny beautiful Jan day. The breakfast burrito here has no potatoes in it of any sort, but is more basic, with eggs, salsa and the option for avocado. It comes out looking a bit like a pannini with grill marks (see photos). It's OK, but nothing special. The location is nice and the staff too, but the breakfast burrito is a bit too basic and I had to add a lot of hot sauce to spice it up for my palette.
