Jang Dok Dae is about as Korean as a Korean restaurant can get. It's by Korean people for Korean people. The name of the restaurant is printed in Korean only. On its storefront, small English subtext reads: "Natural Korean Restaurant." Fortunately, the Internet exists to get the word out to non-Koreans about this place. It's pretty good -- very authentic and the staff are warm and friendly. The restaurant is located in the Super H Mart shopping center (Park Village) on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. If facing H Mart, Jang Dok Dae is to the left, on the ground level underneath Do Re Mi Karaoke. The storefront is low key with a nondescript wooden door front entrance. The interior is low key as well with private tables against the walls, an open dining area in the middle, and a bar in the back (which I don't think is even used). When we visited, I think the AC was on the fritz because it was uncomfortably warm inside and they had a bunch of portable fans blowing. This place serves a little bit of everything when it comes to traditional and family-style Korean food. This is not a Korean BBQ joint, tofu house, nor snack food restaurant. In other words, this is where older Korean people come to eat and you'll most likely see a lot of them if you come eat here. This is not an old restaurant (in fact, I think it's relatively new), but it's got an old school vibe. Nearly 30 lunch specials are available from 11am to 3pm and range in price from $8.99 to $38.99 per dish -- prices run the gamut. There are close to 50 dinner items, most of which range in price from $8.99 to $41.99 each. A lot of the pricier items are meant to be shared. A bulk of the menu consists of noodles, soups and stews, meats (and some seafood), and pancakes. There are also specials like Kobe steak and blue fin tuna that aren't cheap, starting at $50 to $80 an order. Here's what I tried off the dinner menu: * 3. Mung gae sora yuja sauce ($6.99) - sea squirt and conch with citron soy sauce * 38. Gamja tang ($8.99) - pork back-bone stew with potatoes * 48. Deungsim bulgogi ($21.99) - stir-fried beef sirloin in sweet and soy sauce * 41. Dogani tang ($13.99) - ox knee soup The sea squirt and conch appetizer was served raw. Both the sea squirt and conch were sliced into bite-sized pieces. They sat in a small bowl with soy sauce along with thin slices of lemon and lime. I enjoyed the sea squirt more than I did the conch, but both were similar in terms of taste and texture. Cold, squishy, a little bit rubbery, salty/briny, and citrusy (of course). Interesting and not bad, but I'm not sure I'd order it again. My Korean friend Christina, who also ate with me here, suggested the gamja tang. She said there are restaurants in Korea that specialize in gamja tang and you can customize the soup however you want. At $8.99, I think Jang Dok Dae's gamja tang is a good value. It's a spicy, hearty soup with a deep red, somewhat oily broth. Along with on-the-bone pork and half a potato, the soup also had jalapeno, radish, green onion, perilla leaves, and ground sesame seeds. It came with a side of rice. The pork was fork-tender and the broth quite flavorful. The deungsim bulgogi was A-OK. It was pretty much a shredded beef stir-fry containing a variety of veggies such as onion, scallion, peppers, and radish. The meat had decent flavor, but I've had tastier bulgogi elsewhere. Don't let that deter you from ordering this dish though. This and the other stir-fries on the menu are among this restaurant's most popular and recommended items according to the staff. The bulgogi is served hot and still sizzling on a skillet. Dogani tang is similar to seolleongtang (ox bone soup) which is more popular. Dogani tang only has ox knee, which is gelatinous and tendony. Some chunks are "meatier" than others. Unlike seolleongtang, dogani tang has no bones. One of my friends ordered the seolleongtang and we noticed that it came with noodles while the dogani tang did not. Boo. Both of these soups have cloudy, off-white broths that you must season yourself at the table with salt, black pepper, and scallions. Both also come with a salty, vinegary sauce on the side which you can either add to your soup or use as a dipping sauce for the ox meat. These soups come with a side of rice as well. I consider these soups light and comforting. Just realize that the broth isn't going to be packed with flavor and that it's by design. The banchan that came with our meal included complimentary cups of hot egg soup with imitation crab (a first), boiled peanuts, and fish cake, kimchi, perilla leaves, chunked daikon radish, and bean sprouts. The egg soup was terrific, the peanuts were random (I've never had boiled peanuts in-the-shell at a Korean restaurant before), and the kimchi and perilla leaves were disappointing. Something about the sauce/residual flavor of the kimchi and perilla leaves was off. Service was great. The entire staff were attentive, polite, and welcoming. read more

Came here for a lunch on a weekend. We had the mackerel, ginseng chicken and short ribs. We stayed in one booth, which was cool and felt private. Mackerel was medium sized. Ginseng chicken was plain. I guess that's why they provided us a small bowl of salt. Short rib portion was small. It tasted good but I would like a little more beef. read more

The spot is a nice place to have lunch or dinner with your family or a small group of friends. The workers here were really friendly and all of them seem to be a cool group of Korean aunties. The place is like a hole in the wall Korean restaurant. The food here was pretty good! I would go again to try the different dishes. Definitely a hidden gem, very authentic Korean restaurant with a lot of variation of food. The big categories are soups (stews), shared dishes, and noodles. We had a couple of soups and they were all really good (a bit venturous required for some). They also let you add the salt yourself to adjust to your own taste. I'm going to recommend a dish that I think it's amazing though, it is the pork trotter. I visited Jang Dok Dae, with a group that included two Koreans, who helped navigate us around this super authentic restaurant. I'd always wanted to try "real" Korean food, vs the typical Korean BBQ or fried wings i've had over and over. Customer service was good, and they even offered us complimentary Korean egg soup. I took one sip though and stopped, because I noticed there was crab in there (i'm allergic), but very nice of them! I decided to stay away from their soups and get their Deungsim Bulgogi beef ($21.99), which is a stir fried beef sirloin in sweet and soy sauce. This came with a side of steamed rice. The bulgogi beef was pretty tender, and flavored similarly to other Bulgogi beef i've had. In addition to the beef, there were sliced carrot, onion, bell pepper and sesame seeds mixed in. There WAS a ton of food on this plate though, so finishing it was a happy, tasty problem! In addition to all of this was the traditional banchan (or sides) that accompany the meals free of charge, so good luck leaving this place without having your appetite squashed. Located off of pleasant hill road in the H-mart shopping center (to the left of it), Jang Dok Dae is actually kinda tough to find, as it's hidden in plain site, mainly because it doesn't have an English name to clue you in. I don't know how often i'll be back to Jang Dok Dae, but it was a great experience to try the food. we were looking for homestyle Korean food on a rainy/cold night and were so glad we stopped by! bibim naengmyeon was on the spicier side for us, but so refreshing and tasty. the galbi was a little overdone but we didn't mind because it paired so well with the kimchi. the gamjatang (pork and potato stew) was the highlight for us. so hearty (and so much!) and delicious. we also loved their banchan; kimchi, radishes, potatoes...all amazing. it was a weeknight so there was only one other party. our waitress was very sweet as well. it's in a large plaza with plenty of parking. can't wait until we're in town again! read more

My korean friend, B, recommended this place after his parents introduced it to him when he moved back from California. I was hoping that this place would measure up, and since California has some of the best korean food in the country, I figured that this place would be pretty good! I had to get the oxtail soup because it was so cold that day, and it was one of my favorites to get up in Baltimore during the winter days: Korean Oxtail Soup () PROS -hot, bubbling in a stone bowl -very rich and creamy like it's supposed to be. Does not appear to be watered down like some places (more than Lee's Tofu down off Buford Highway near Chamblee) -clean and fresh tasting, warms you to the bone kind of feeling -lots of green scallions to add to your dish (this is a personal thing because some people can't stand green onions) CONS -not as much meat slices or vermicelli as Hanbat in LA. Would I get it again? Definitely. I got to taste the broth from my friend's blood sausage stew which was really tasty as well. I'll definitely get that the next time I come to Jang Dok Dae. But truthfully, it's got some great flavors for being only fifteen minutes away from home. Being that I am not much of a meat eater, and I'd be eating this dish for the soup, I would look more for the sustenance in the soup consistency than the actual meat or vermicelli amount. It is served with rice so that is filling in and of itself. The panchan dishes are also not too bad, especially with a large piece of mackerel or fried fish served. This place is located just behind the H-mart in Duluth off Pleasanthill Road. It's actually a bit hard to find and doesn't have an English name on the front. I've realized that it tends to be a restaurant more for older generations. That's probably more appropriate for me being that I'm aging day by day. I do love a good hot korean stew, especially in the winter. In summary I'd give this dish about ***.85 (3.85 stars). It's pretty darn tasty! Really enjoyed this restaurant! We were looking for some Korean food in a rainy cold night and my friend brought us here. And they got all kinds of stews which were perfect for our mood. My favorite was the ginseng chicken soup, which was made from a whole chicken stuffed with sticky rice and cook to tender and almost fall apart. You should add salt to the soup to taste, and it was absolutely delicious! I also enjoyed the pork trotter a lot, it came in a large portion and the flavor and texture was perfect! They also serve many complimentary small plates, which are really good as well. Its cozy inside and lots of menu options. We had the Kobe bulgogi and Chungookjang (the strong bean soup). The side dishes (banchan) was great that night. The meat was tender and nicely flavored. The server will come by often to make sure the meet isn't over cooked. There lots of veggies and noodles with the dish. Overall it was a classic Korean meal. Left pretty full. My mom and I try to do a weekly Korean food date. I saw that this place had opened and after a H Mart shopping trip, we decided to grab some dinner here. We ordered small octopus stir fry (because my mom and I are fiends for this dish) and it was probably one of the best ones I have had! Their banchan was very good and I think we got seconds and finished them and that normally never happens because I get tired of eating them mid serving through, but it was so delicious my mom and I cleaned the plate-twice. The stir fry is pretty spicy and my mom said she had a bit of a heart burn. I highly enjoy super spicy stuff and we did it on regular spicy. I loved how they had put small thin rice noodles on the side on top of parilla leaves. We kind of did a small wrap with the stir fry, noodles, and the leaves (since my mom was complaining it was too spicy) and it was really delicious. I would highly recommend this dish for sure. They also gave us some sullongtang (bone broth) on the side and it was very, very good quality. My mom is pretty picky about these things and she was duly impressed as well. My mom's friends go here all the time and said the food was really good. The food is expensive for what they give you which is fine if it's actually good but the food wasn't very good. My mom had the gamja tang which is a soup with pork bones and potatoes. The potatoes were undercooked and the meat wasn't tender at all. My dad had the soybean stew which came in a small clay pot. The serving size was really small but my dad said it was good. I got the jaeyook bokkeum which was stir fried pork. It was $17 I think and wasn't very good. No real flavor. Wasn't particularly anything, just meh. Banchan was minimal 5 different things. Bean sprout, kimchi, cucumber kimchi, odaeng (fish cake) and one other thing I can't remember. It took them forever to give us banchan. People who came in after us were served first. Annoying. At one point, we asked the waitress to refill our banchan but she forgot. We asked another waitress and she acted as if we were bothering her. Food took forever to come out, they never came by to check on us and never refilled our water. The waitress gave me white rice and my parents japgok bab(purple rice), but never asked me what our preference was. I ate what I got because I didn't feel like waiting 15 minutes for a different bowl of rice. Food was mediocre at best and service sucked. First and last time. I can say this is the place we can find the most authentic Korean food. The menus are unique. Some menus are very unique that you cannot find at other restaurant. Kind of Japanese ? hybrid foods are also available. If you would like to enjoy authentic Korean food but at same time something you never tried before, this is a good place. This restaurant is really expensive and doesn't really deliver for the price. We ordered the soup with cartilage and beef and we maybe got 10 pieces to share around 4 people.
