The restaurant serves delicious Korean food in a comfortable and modestly decorated setting. I like it. The vibe has been friendly on our visits. On our most recent visit it was busy and then person working the counter was absolutely doing a great job of keeping the food coming out, engaging customers, and helping. It was nice to see someone serving such good food with pride. Even though she was busy she stopped by several times and refilled my sprouts that were so good! The radish was also delicious. Self service and no tipping required. Plenty of parking and tucked in a shopping center: look for the wooden doors. All of the food was delicious and felt really light in our bellies which isn't always the case with Korean food. The pork belly with chive salad was good as was the mung bean pancakes. Located in the same plaza as the Duluth H-mart, this restaurant has that family owned feel with a self service type of system. They have a printed menu on the wall that can help you get an idea of what they have but we were told to order on their giant screen ordering system for both take out and dine in. They offer appetizers, soups, and different types of entrees. Once you place your order, your receipt will have you order number that they'll call out when everything is ready. In front of their food pick up station, they have a table of utensils like ladles, tongs, some spoons and forks (chopsticks will be with your food), cups, and hot/cold water for you to serve and refill yourself. Once your number is called you can pick up your tray of food which includes the side dishes, or if it's a big order they'll place it on a rolling cart and bring it table side once they figure out where you're sitting. 3 of us shared: - soondae guk: blood sausage soup with other meats and cartilage. It's a bone based broth that also comes with a side of salted shrimp and "hot sauce" for you to dip the meats in. The broth needs seasoning (on purpose for you to season yourself) so be sure to taste and add salt to your preference! Comes with rice. This was very good - yukejang: spicy beef soup with vermicelli noodles, green onions, bean sprouts, and egg. The soup itself is pretty flavorful and slightly spicy, comes with rice. - chungookjang: fermented soybean soup with tofu, zucchini, onion, and other veggies. Comes with rice. Some people don't enjoy it but I love this dish! It has a strong fermented flavor. - bulgogi ssam: thinly sliced beef marinated in a soy sauce base. Comes stir fried with veggies with a side of lettuce, soybean paste and peppers to wrap the meat in, as welll as rice. Personally the meat was a bit tough for me but I did like the side of cabbage soup it came with. Side dishes were the cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi, bean sprouts, and potato salad. I'm not a fan, and the hubs said it was okay for its uniqueness but that he prob wouldn't order it again. * Grilled mackerel: It was a sizable fish, and it was pretty tasty and healthy. Because of its portion and taste, I would get whatever combo or entree that have this for future visits. * Bean paste stew: Hearty and flavorful. I'm definitely a fan! Not a lot of Korean places offer this so it's a special treat for me. The soup here seemed to be in a slightly smaller pot, but it had veggies and herbs that differed from other bean paste stews that were thicker. I had driven by this restaurant several times but could never see what the name of it was as it was written mostly in Korean. I did see that it have that it was natural food. My cousins came in from out of town and suggested we meet here. I got there just as they were going in and finally saw the name of the restaurant written in English. It wasn't too busy and we were seated right away. The menu was written in Korean and English, except for the daily lunch specials which was written in entirely Korean. I'm not Korean, nor are my cousins, so we stuck to the pictures and what was written in English. Since the younger cousins had been there before, I asked what they recommended. While we were deciding, the banchan was delivered. We got two sets of each and there was a nice variety. By the end of the meal, we each had our favorites and some to take home. One definitely wanted the pig trotters. I ordered a seafood pancake. Between the two dishes, there was plenty to share as appetizers. One of the other cousins wanted the rice cake soup since she rarely makes it herself. Her husband ordered the mackeral, I ordered the squid. The younger cousin's wife ordered the Korean sausage soup. Each entree came out quickly with a bowl of rice. I was thinking it'd be white rice, but to my surprise, when I took the lid off my bowl, it was the purple multigrain rice. Love that but I know it's hard to make on one's own. We shared our entrees. The mackeral was light and tasty. I was thinking it might be dry, but it wasn't. My squid was spicy, but not overbearing. Our table had plenty of room for 5 adults and two little ones, one being less than a year old, but was eating table food if it was soft, ie rice, pancake. The waitress was very attentive, making sure we had enough, our waters were refilled and asked if we needed anything. 3 things about this place: 1. This place has been a spot to go to every time I visited Georgia. Haven't been here in a couple of years and needed to come because of previous positive experiences. The place was clean with great environment where I felt like I was in Korea. The lady serving was extremely friendly and always had a smile. 2. Fermented soybean paste stew + grilled mackerel, ox bone stew (seol long tang), and cabbage hangover soup were ordered. The taste hasn't changed and was the same from the last time I was here. Jang Dok Dae is definitely one of the most underrated Korean restaurants in Duluth. Its main reason is because it doesn't target a foreign audience base, but rather goes for the elderly Korean audience. You'll know what I mean as soon as you enter the door. As Daniel B said in his review, it really doesn't get more Korean than this.. The interior is extremely traditional and they have old.. old (like 80's) Korean music playing in the background. We visited on a Sunday evening and was seated promptly. A few things I like about Jang Dok Dae is that most of the tables are in booths or in enclosed rooms guaranteeing privacy. We ordered the large bossam and the gamjatang jungol (stew) to share with 5 people. The food came out fairly quickly. The banchans that came first were exceptionally good. There is a saying that if the banchan is good, the food will be good. The kimchi, radish kimchi, bean sprouts, kimchi salad and the potato salad were all very very good. The bossam was a large for $32.99 but the portions were rather disappointing. They said it was for 2-3 people, but it looked like it could feed one person. But I do know that bossam at other places are also pretty small, so we didn't let that bother us. The meat was extremely tender; no smell, and the radish kimchi they serve it with had an amazing flavor. The perfect amount of sweet & sour. The chives were a little bland but I could tell it was catered to those Koreans liking the bland flavor. The gamjatang stew was amazing! There was a perfect amount of Korean peppers, and the meat was very tender! There was enough potato for everyone to get a piece. The stew was very flavorful, and we had just enough soup to make some fried rice at the end! This is not something they do for you, so we requested for some sesame oil and seaweed laver, and the server lady was so nice enough to provide it for us free of charge! I was so surprised because most places would charge for that. Overall, we were very impressed with our meals. This place isn't as well known as Jang Su Jang or Seo Ra Beol, but it definitely matches that quality. I will be returning soon! read more

My first impression: I love the Korean traditional-styled interior of the place! They have a wide selection of food on their menu - from stews, to grilled meats/fish, and noodles. I ordered Gamjatang, Sullongtang, and LA Galbi for my family and I. The food came out pretty quickly and had a good selection of banchan (side dishes). Felt like I was eating a home cooked meal and was especially comforting on a cold day! The staff were super friendly and kind :) The prices were pretty reasonable, other than the fact that the LA Galbi was $30. But overall affordable & reasonably priced. Honestly, I would've probably never known or tried this place if it wasn't for my friend's recent obsession with the Korean spicy crabs. We decided to give this place a try and had their raw spicy marinated crabs and it was so good! Very messy, but good! The first recent visit, I just assumed it was an off night; however, the second visit our food was not fresh or well seasoned... It felt so odd and different from the many times I've dined here. The Kamjatang is still very good here. Probably one of the best I've had in Atlanta. Generous protein portion. Turns out they changed ownership. Looks like the quality of food changed too...atleast for the dishes my family and I tried. For example, the moolnengmyun and dduhkmandookuk is not good at all anymore. Total bummer. The service is pretty good still and having a bell in each booth/partitioned area helped. The banchan is still good though. Just a quick update on my squid comment. Turns out the large size is not evenly mixed. Once I opened the entire package there turned out to be plenty of squid! We mixed it with rice, cut the squid into smaller pieces, and it was amazing. The gamjatang is still good after refrigeration. I mixed that with rice and ripped the meat off the bone to make a porridge type meal, and it was amazing. read more

Although Bulgogi is now everywhere, even commonly found in TV dinners in U.S. supermarkets, I figured that I should have the best of the best while I'm here in Koreatown, in Gwinnett Place in Duluth. So...after browsing thru pic after pic, review after review of Bulgogi featured by several top rated K restaurants on Yelp, I decided to go with the one with the best, juiciest pic...and the award goes to Jang Dok Dae! I was able to beat their closing hour, close to 9:30 pm...and put in my order of "Deungsim Bulgogi" just in time, described on their menu as stir-fried beef sirloin in sweet and soy sauce. Of course, like all K foods, it also came with several complimentary sides, as well as rice and soup. Well, glad to say that I picked a good one. As pictured, their Bulgogi is indeed juicy and savory...though not as sweet as I thought it'd be (considering their description). Truly, not all Bulgogi are equal...and this one was WAY above average. Again, am thinking that possibly the only place in Duluth that may be able to outdo this Bulgogi may be Jang Su Jang (but I could be wrong?). Of course, I'm talking about pre-cooked, off-the-menu Bulgogi, not the Korean BBQ live grill versions. I've come to accept that you really can't beat the taste of the grilled versions of Bulgogi, or any meats for that matter. BTW, as of yesterday, I'm a born again Korean BBQ fan (after a grilled Galbi-Plus experience at 678!)...but up until, I resisted the BBQ grills for various reasons. ANYWAY, all of my excuses went out the door after a Godly BBQ experience last night, here in Duluth (as explained in my review for 678 Korean BBQ). OK...back to the review at hand! I'm super-tired, so I tend to ramble on...even in my writing lol! Guess you can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the Bulgogi, as well as all the side dishes. I noticed that this restaurant offers amazing, affordable lunch specials, so I hope to try them for lunch in the future. This restaurant is also very cozy, in an ancient, Asian fashion...with bright, yet old fashioned decor. Even some (most?) of the tables were semi-private, with these old fashioned, partitions. The service was also warm and cozy...and as is typical of most Korean restaurants, super-quick. It's sort of amazing...how these super-sophisticated dishes, with a ton of seasonings and flavoring, using lots of different meats and veggies, and grilled to perfection...are delivered to your table in record time, sometimes faster than Cheeseburgers and Fries from McDonald's Drive-Thru. This is my favorite Atlanta restaurant for Sam Gye Tang, whole chicken soup. The soup pot is brought to your table and contains a whole chicken, stuffed with rice, ginseng, and jujube. The broth is light and natural tasting. It an extremely nutritious and comforting meal. Something I look forward to eating whenever I am in Atlanta. Jang Dok Dae also specializes in Solangtang and other meat soups. The food is noted as being a "well being" place, which would be good for someone recovering from an illness or stomach trouble. The menu contains both english and Korean, specials are written in Korean and Korean is mostly spoken. To be honest, the wait staff is really not interested in seating me or dealing with me if I am not speaking Korean at the time. So, I just speak Korean when entering and in all interactions to keep the dining process going smoothly. Samygyetang is enough food for 2-3 people, but the staff will become upset if everyone does not order at least one dish. So we always over order here and have to bring something home. A jangdokdae is a Korean section of a traditional house where they have a considerable stash of clay pots filled with traditional Korean sauces such as fermented soybean paste, kimchee, gochujang (spicy sweet red pepper paste), and a bunch of other stuff. In Atlantan terms, it's a hidden gem of a Korean restaurant out in Duluth by the Super H-Mart off Pleasant Hill! I say hidden because it is tucked away in the corner of the Park Village Shopping Center that is not viewable by the main road. I say gem because they have some of the traditional Korean favorites from all the stews and soups to a lot of the traditional grilled items like grilled fish, fermented skate (buckle up!), kimchee and mung bean pancakes, along with a slew of others and they are delicious looking. Just like how your traditional Korean grandmother or mother would make it! I had the suhl-lung-tahng which is their beef broth soup that has rice noodles. It's almost like the Korean ox tail soup but instead of ox tail, there are slabs of beef. Like any beef soup, you are the one to customize the flavor with salt and pepper to your taste which I also found to be a favorite of mine whenever I have ox tail soup at home. Everything about this place's food is great. The problem here is with their soups, the meet is the highlight and they don't have enough. I only had 3 small slices of beef and found that to be a bit of a disappointment. I will say that overall, this place is great in terms of food, service, ambiance, and definitely price. It was $8.99 for the soup and it comes out piping hot and fresh. The some of the banchan (side dishes) arrived warm but overall, for that price for hot soup, it's great. They only skip out on quantity and I wish they would provide more. But worth a visit for some traditional Korean fare!!! read more
