I liked the tuiles on the Caesar salad, even if the greens were too heavily dressed. Only the ribeye was particularly tender out of our table's steaks. The Cajun spiced filet came highly recommended by our server, but it was just underwhelming in flavor and texture. Wild mushroom risotto was also a little undercooked, leaving the side of green beans as the favorite item in our meal, despite the aggressive sweetness of the candied pecans. First time here and was expecting better. Steaks were good and cooked perfectly, but could be better seasoned. Sides were good. I had the caramelized carrots and asparagus. I was looking forward to trying more drink options But they were unavailable. Both my preferred options were not avail despite being listed on the menu. Why put them on there if you don't have them? I think they had a couple new servers there, so service was mediocre for this type of establishment. He was really nice but didn't introduce himself and seemed distracted when talking to us. Overall the experience was good but I'm not sure if I'd return... maybe for the bar.. and to sit at the bar top. And hopefully they'll stock up in inventory because the cocktails looked great. Really good food from appetizer to dessert. The Shrimp Durango appetizer was delicious, and after we finished the shrimps we kept the plate to dip our bread into the tasty sauce. The bread came with softened pastrami butter that was very flavorful and enjoyable. Our food came pretty timely, and our plates had healthy portions each. The service was very friendly too. We (party of two) arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation but was able to sit down promptly after arriving. This was my first time here and I really enjoyed it. We have had very good meals here, but not the last. We live about 2 hours away, so this is not our around the corner place, but if we're close by.... We make it happen. My wife loves their scallops, she opt 'ed not for the combo of steak and scallops this time, more room for beautiful pan seared scallops. What came out were scallops the size of quarters, truly 1" diameter. See the photo attached from their web site, not what was delivered to us. To add to the disappointment, they were arranged on a large cool plate with string beans that we had to beg to get as a side. What was presented to us were cool to cold scallops, no knife needed, because they were so small. We told the server of our disappointment, his eyes rolled and he all of a sudden had a hearing loss. First time at J.Gilberts and it was a pleasant experience. Food: Calamari was definitely a no no. It seem as though it was fried with old oil. We had two bite and was disgusted by the taste. Strawberry mojito - ugh! worst I've had. However I had a margarita after and the margarita made up for the mojito Salad - I mean who can mess that up Lamb chop, mashed potatoes and asparagus - Won't say this was the best lamb chop I've had but I was very good, I enjoyed everything on my plate. This review is based on a recent visit to their brunch Buffet. It's offered on Sundays and we simply stumbled upon it. It was the perfect treat after morning mass. My husband and I do love buffets although I have to say brunch food is not my favorite. However, my husband was quite impressed with the fact that they had oysters! He really enjoyed them! I have to say that their quiche filled with bacon and possibly Gouda cheese Was my absolute favorite item and I kept going back for more! My kids loved all the fresh fruit and of course the waffles and fried chicken. There was also quite a charcuterie spread to choose from, bagels and cream cheese, Prime rib and an omelette station and of course, the usual, Buffet options of bacon and sausage and plain scrambled eggs. There was also quite a spread of dessert. I'm a sucker for seven layer bars, so those won me over. My son enjoyed the chocolate pudding. This place is extraordinary. They go above and beyond to make sure your culinary experience with them is simply exceptional. I have been a very enthusiastic patron for many, many years. Here's a little story that might be of interest. Some time ago, certainly, within the past year, I went in for lunch and ordered their 10 ounce top sirloin steak. The waitress asked me how I would like it. I told her that I would like it double charred and Rare plus. And I explained to her what that meant. I wanted it black and burnt like a hockey puck on the outside , and in between rare and medium rare on the inside. I asked her if they could do that. She said she would check with the kitchen and if there was any problem, she would come back and let me know. She didn't come back. About 10 minutes later, a short, rotund, clearly perspiring chef came out with a steak on a platter, and came straight over to me, and asked me in a delightful Spanish sounding accented English "Is this how you like it, señor?" He was beaming. It was perfect. So here's my take on all this: that chef probably cooked his steaks just like that, and wanted to see who ordered a steak like that. Just my two cents. Their seafood is excellent, they have a nice wine selection, good beers, whiskeys, and so on. And their dessert menu is not to be neglected! J. Traveling for work and looking for steak that wouldn't cost me a small fortune like some of the places in the more booming Tyson's Corner area and thanks to Yelp stubbled on this place. Just a short drive from the hustle and bustle and well worth the Uber fare. Unlike many steakhouses where sides are at a cost on top of your protein, here you get to choose two included in the price! They also have a number of 3-course meal options for extremely reasonable prices. I opted to start with the crab bisque. A bowl with just crab meat is delivered and bisque is then poured over it from a small carafe. It was good but not the best bisque I've ever had. For my main I went with the 6oz filet combo with scallops, citrus broccolini, and lobster Mac (+$4). Upon delivery the waiter had me confirm the temperature of my meat was to perfection which it sure was. Filet was tender and delicious and I repurposed some of whatever the seasoned bread butter was for a little extra something on a few of my bites. I can't complain about anything on the plate. I had to sleep on this review to calm it down. I had never been to this restaurant, but somehow hot on their internet marketing list. I went because it was my boyfriend's birthday and I had an extended birthday coupon from my birthday for up to $25 which is nothing for their prices. When we arrived, my boyfriend went to the restroom so I presented the waiter with the coupon upfront. He told me discounted meals get discounted service. He was telling the truth. It took us 30 minutes to place an order since we weren't drinking anything but water. When my boyfriend returned, the waiter proceeds to tell him that I said he was a big spender and all he was drinking was water? I was so embarrassed since this was my treat. He presented my boyfriend with the 18oz bone-in cowboy cut steak. He doesn't suggest anything to me and walks away. He finally comes back and my boyfriend orders the suggested steak with asparagus and potatoes au gratin and a salad. I order the pre fix meal with the salad, lamb crown, and carrot cake. (Like a combo meal.) The waiter finally brings bread and butter to our table. The bread is stale and not sure but one seemed to be salt less, but the waiter did not give us a heads up. 15-20 minutes later the house salad and my boyfriend's Caesar sald come out. Those were fresh and good, but I was not given a dressing choice and appeared to have ranch. When asked if there was another bread choice like wheat or pumpernickel, the waiter replied, " This is a steakhouse not a French bakery." After another 15-20 minutes another waiter brought our entrees out. Everything was glazed to hide the age of the meats. The mushroom risotto was disgusting and did not go with the weirdly glazed lamb. You couldn't even taste the lamb... yuck! The meal was as appalling as the waiter who kept making slams about only water. I stopped drinking it when I saw him spit into the pitcher while making a big deal of having to bust the table as he pointed to another member of staff and said to my boyfriend, " Yezh, he dresses like a busboy and stands there giving orders." My boyfriend agreed and laughed with the waiter. I had my back to this person. Even though I ordered my cake with the meal, the waiter still came back and asked if I wanted dessert. We were kinda over it, but my boyfriend went ahead and ordered the creme so he had to stay and eat it. That seemed fine. I took mine to go. At the end of the day, the waiter dropped the bill in front of my boyfriend knowing I had the coupon. He also made a horribly big deal of the coupon since he had not processed the tab with it. Then he still gave bill to my boyfriend. I paid and he brought it back again and said wow she's paying must be your birthday. I found it insulting. Additionally, no one came to sing happy birthday as they did other places in the restaurant. I will never go back there. Everything sucked. Too bad since they do have port wine. read more

We were seated in a drafty part of the restaurant where some of the ceiling tiles were missing. It took forever to get our food, and the wait staff were not attentive and got several of our dishes wrong. The men's bathroom had some weird plumbing issues. Not sure we'll go back. After hearing on social media that J. Gilberts had a great burger, we made plans to come here for lunch on a weekday. We got there soon after they opened, but within 20 minutes, they had a full parking lot and lots of guests! (Make reservations!) The first impression when we walked in was it smelled amazing! Like a steakhouse that cooks over a flame created by aromatic wood! The other thing we noticed was how beautiful and the brick and wood was. The place is big, but each room/area has a quaint feel to it, since they're sectioned off. We sat next to a beautiful fireplace that really made it feel cozy! We could totally see coming here on a cool evening for dinner and sitting in that same spot! Service was great, friendly and helpful! The menu is awesome and prices are reasonable. The food was GREAT! Their Wagyu burger was prepared PERFECTLY (check the pics of it that I posted!)!!! The flavor was great and the pretzel bun was really nice! The starter salads were really good with an amazing dressing and pickled onions - we both loved these salads! Their table bread, the sourdough bread was served very warm and tasted great, especially with the soft, whipped butter. So I live very close to this place, and for some reason I had never visited. My boyfriend's friend was making plans for his birthday and we decided to go here of two other places - Seasons 52 and Eddie V's. Despite making a 9 PM reservation (only one available) we were not advised of the kitchen closing at 9:30, so when we were seated, there was an obvious rush. We ordered drinks - they took forever but they were good. The bourbon smash is delicious. Party of 7 - food took so long but most of the items were worth it. The thing that threw me off was we mentioned two of three side potatoes were cold. The server, while very sweet, was not very accommodating. Nothing was offered as a result (warm up or bring out new ones) and then, once checks were handed out she said "I told the kitchen about the cold potatoes and they were so upset" So, the food was good. The steaks are tender, the lamb chops are flavorful, the lobster Cobb is delicious and filling and the lobster crab bisque is yum! The service was lacking. Since it was late, I will chalk it up to end of the night blues. I'll likely visit again, but during the day. I wish this was more of a hit, especially for the price. read more

We had baked oysters and these potato chips with blue cheese (cant remember the name of it) for our appetizers. I've always strayed away from oysters, not a huge fan of seafood, but since these were cooked I gave them a try and they were amazing! The potato chips were also really good and a great way to start lunch. I got the french dip and it was really filling and tasty. The fries paired really well with it! I will say, I thought the lobster mac n cheese was a little bit lacking especially considering the price. It still tasted good, and I understand the lobster was expensive but I think these mac n cheese itself didn't have enough for my personal taste! Step in on a weekend afternoon around 3pm, saw a few diners, but many open tables. We asked for a table inside because it's hot out. Were told since we didn't have a reservation, they are not sure they could accommodate us. At 3pm in a half empty facility!? I can only assume we didn't look like their ideal candidate of guests, as we were given cold shoulders and no greetings while we waited by the host stand. We visited this restaurant on a Sunday evening. The atmosphere was very quiet and the ambience was quite nice. I love beef, but can only eat so much. They offered an entree that included a 4 oz. Filet and a crab cake- which for me was just perfect. My filet was done just as requested and the crab cake was very good (but tiny) as well. The sides of asparagus and garlic mashed were very good too. My husband ordered a wedge salad and the appetizer portion of crab cakes. He had 3 beers (we walked from our hotel) and I had one glass of wine and our bill- before tip was $128. Now, I know I'm from the Midwest and prices near DC are probably higher, but that seemed really high for what we ordered. The service was a little slow, even tho we weren't in a hurry, it just seemed like it took a long time for our server to come back around. So i have been seeing this place for years but never got the chance to go. I finally went here for dinner the other night and the service and the food totally blew me away. The establishment has been around for a while so it seemed they have not really updated their indoor dining area but besides the humble indoor, the food and service is top notch. We started with the house bread which is a sourdough loaf served with whipped butter and the crab bisque. My friend who worked here a few years ago told me the crab bisque is actually lobster bisque but they put crab in it (oops did i just spill a house secret?! Well it was an interesting fact). After the delicious soup, i got the 6 oz. filet mignon with the side of potatoes au gratin and pecan green beans and my friend opted for the maple salmon cooked on the flank (literally because it was smoking on the flank when it came) with a side of mushroom risotto and green beans. My steak was medium and cooked perfectly. The steak was easy to cut even with a regular knife and whether paired with the herb butter or by itself, it was delectable. I have not had steak in a while so i really enjoyed my dish. The accompanying sides were also delish. I tasted my friends salmon and mushoom risotto and both were impressive and flavorful. We did not wanted dessert but the server insisted because he was an old colleague of my friend and brought us a rich chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet. I've never been waited on by two waiters before. Totally new experience! In the bar during happy hour. Thats 5 stars right off the bat and I have no liquor in me yet. Thank u! That is a business model worth replicating! These guys are experts. Happy hour specials are legit. Bar is austere, mature and full mostly of older men (not good or bad, just is). Good specials. Manhattan is legit. The cherries are not maraschino. That's a plus for me, not for my Grama (yes, I don't add an n and d) but she's not with me, so it doesn't matter. I came a little after 4. It quickly became busy. I'd certainly come back for happy hour. I imagine if I lived here I would meet friends here frequently. Very comfortable setting. The Tuna Tartare was divine with mango, avacado and red onion. The Shrimp Durango less yummy but fresh and well cooked. Could have used a bit more salt, basil and flavor. This review is for the 'Sunday Brunch'. I was searching for a nice brunch to celebrate my hubbie's birthday. There are many out there but I needed to hold it somewhere in the NOVA area because we had family coming in from Purcellville. This area is central to DC and the outskirts of Loudoun Cty. Making a reservation was easy but I couldn't use Open Table to our 12 person guest list. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised that we were seated in their Wine Room, complete with nice big windows and a roomy area. The area was not completely enclosed but it did offer a nice buffer from the 'constant movement of the brunch crowd'. I really commend J. Gilbert's preparation of our arrival: nicely set table, water glasses filled, and roomy seating arrangement. The one thing that did not make this a perfect experience was that the two servers that were assigned did not go over the details of their brunch and all the inclusives that came with the one price of $29. Lucky for my keen eye, I managed to snag a manager and ask about the 'fresh made donuts and caramel apple sauce' served table side and the fact that coffee and sodas were also included in the price. SO, for those coming for the first time, please ask for the donuts if they are not brought to you, because they are AH-MAZING, and indulge in soda and coffee because you have paid for it. I can't go into each and every detail of the food but I can tell you this: everything was freshly prepared, hot, and definitely tasty. There was a prime beef rib carving station, omelet bar, fresh sushi, an oyster and peel/eat shrimp bar complete with tiny Tabasco bottles. There was a salad area, nice selection of cheese, and plenty of thick sliced bacon and sausages. ALSO, be sure to ask for the fresh made waffles with maple syrup, they are served to you table side. Those were the best waffles I have ever tasted! They have a large selection of lunch items including baked salmon, quiche, biscuits and the most amazing gravy. There is plenty of green stuff(green beans and other green things that I didn't get to try). Their dessert area was wonderful....chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, tiny panna cotta cups. The alcohol is not included but they have a nice price for mimosas, bloody mary drinks, and sparkling wine ($5-$7). Services was good, except for the minor omission on the donuts and beverages. They don't automatically add gratuity which is rare for large parties. Our overall experience definitely deserves 5 full stars! We will never go back, and as mclean residents are saddened by the decline of a once decent restaurant. I'd rather drive to Tyson's than wait over an hour in their sad dining room for a steak. I have young children and they all agreed, that they too have reached the end of their rope with this restaurant. The food is mediocre and the wait times are terrible.
