I cannot say enough about this restaurant. My friend and I were driving from New Jersey yesterday. We're stuck in traffic for over an hour. We did not have a reservation the hostess Marsha was so accommodating seated us right away and Tsedania was our server. Although it was a late lunch, we had fish tacos with sweet potato fries. The food was delicious. The service was impeccable. Thank you, Tsedania for being so attentive. The atmosphere was amazing. Everyone had a smile, and was very professional. My go to brunch spot! I'm impressed by the variety 20+ dishes in the brunch buffet with lots of vegetarian options. I really enjoy the omelet station and load mine up with veggies, spicy penne pasta, spinach quiches, fluffy biscuits, and pastry galore with mouthwatering chocolate chip cookies, chocolate covered strawberries and marshmallows dipped in fondue. There are also a variety of meats, fresh cheese, fruits, and more. Can't count how many trips I made to the buffet tables and plates I cleared, $30 well spent! The ready to order cinnamon donuts and waffles are really tasty! I love the donuts, they are so fluffy and pipping hot! They remind of funnel cake, while my husband devoured the waffles. The $5 bellinis and mimosas are delicious and a great way to start brunch! My husband enjoyed the Irish coffee (I wish it was part of the $5 deal!) The service is always on point and very polite and cordial. They servers were refilling out glasses or clearing our plate throughout brunch. Unless it's Mother's Day or a holiday, you typically don't need a reservation. As the rush ends around 12:30pm, I recommend coming shortly thereafter. The food starts to get cold after 1pm (still tasty though!) as brunch ends around 2pm. If you are looking to impress you mom, I recommend making a reservation for Mother's Day a month in advance. I waited unless the last minute and the 6 of us sat at the bar, my sister-in-law wasn't too pleased! The Mother's Day brunch is well worth it though, there's a chocolate fondue where you can dip fresh fruits and a larger selection of pastries. I think the other dishes in the buffet are the same. Our 7:45 pm Tuesday night reservation had me wondering why so late!? I figured it might be because we were a party of 10 and had requested the private room. But when we got there, the restaurant was a buzz, completely full of diners, and enjoying their meals. On a Tuesday night, no less! Our waiter, Travis, was superb! Not only was he funny and likable, but he provided excellent recommendations, and provided honest answers for all of our questions on the food. Most of us ordered the filet mignon, which everyone enjoyed. Extremely delicious, buttery and easy to cut steaks. One of our party Ordered the salmon and another had the scallops, and both really enjoyed their meals. We had the onion rings, chicken, wings, and the blue cheese potato chips to start, along with very tasty warm bread. We all had an amazing night, and it's obvious that the quality of the food and high-level of service has made this place a must go in McLean. If you've never been, it's definitely worth trying!! This was my third visit to J Gilbert's in McLean for a work function. The first two were good, but not so good that I felt compelled to write a review. The third visit was bad. I will say that the bar and bar staff are great, and the appetizers were very good. But things went quickly down hill from there. We had a large party in a private room, so we had multiple servers. I ordered a Caesar Salad and asked for anchovies (why that isn't an option in a steak house is beyond me). They didn't have any, which I can live with, but that request somehow made my salad very late, coming almost with my meal, and only after we reminded them that I had ordered it. We ordered several nice bottles of wine for the table. One of our servers forgot which bottle was in her hand, and poured the wrong wine into a guest's glass, on top of a completely different wine. Not cool when we're talking about bottles that are north of $150 each. We had a vegetarian in our party who ordered a pasta dish with no chicken. It was brought to him with chicken. It was sent back and returned correctly, but when the bill came, we were charged twice for that dish. I ordered a filet medium rare, which was brought to me medium well. One other person in our party ordered his steak medium rare, and it was brought to him barely cooked at all. He sent it back and it was returned well done. Bringing dessert out was total chaos; it was as if the servers had just written down everything for the table (incorrectly) and forgot which person any of it was supposed to go to. And instead of providing individual plates and silverware for dessert, our server put a stack of plates in the middle of the table and dumped a pile of forks and knives on top, expecting us to just grab things on our own. I could maybe understand that if we had said we were going to be sharing desserts, but no one ever made such a statement. When spending four figures on dinner at a nice restaurant in a private room, I expect the food, the service, and the attention to detail to be far above what we got at J. Gilbert's on this trip. It's been a long time since I've been to J. Gilbert's - we went pretty frequently a few years back, but honestly, as of late, we started to go to Flemings more - and I'll continue to do so for two primary reasons: 1) wines by the glass are more extensive and 2) they season their steaks better. The reason we returned was because we bought a gift card for my husband's parents for the holidays and we were gifted with two $25 coupons to use. J. Gilbert's isn't cheap, so we didn't want them to go to waste - plus, figured we'd see what it was like after all those years. Went on a Thursday night and sat at the bar. The bar was pretty crowded, especially at nearly 9pm which was when we arrived, but still managed to find seats. Since it was late, we ordered pretty quickly. I got the 6oz filet and asked if I could get a salad instead of a 2nd side (they obliged; $4 upcharge) and for my other side I got the lobster mac and cheese. My husband did something similar but kept his 2 sides and started with a salad. Salads were good, no issues there. The way they noted "anchovies" on the menu for the Caesar salad made me think that there would actually be anchovies (vs. in the dressing) but there weren't, they were just in the dressing. Dressing had nice balance. My steak was cooked beautifully to medium rare and hot, but badly needed seasoning. I added a good bit of salt and pepper (and I never, ever add salt). It's certainly easier to add than take away, but that's why Flemings (in my opinion) trumps J Gilberts at least in terms of steak seasoning. That being said, J. Gilberts gets a 1/2 star because they are certainly more reasonable in terms of price (given that the steaks come with 2 sides vs being al a carte) than other steakhouses in the area - Ruth's Chris, Flemings, etc. Food is a solid 3 for me. A sold 3.5 stars - good, not great. read more

J Gilbert has really great food for the price. While it's not a cheap restaurant at all, they provide very large portions and good sides with every high-end entree. Their steaks have really great texture, flavor, and are cooked to perfection. I would say that their salads are not my favorite, but they are not terrible either. They are just overly filling, and the house salad contains comically large chunks of carrots which can make you full almost immediately, leaving no room for the $50+ entree you are about to eat. Their service staff are very friendly, although they are a bit overworked and during these times of staffing shortages I would recommend ordering all the items you want altogether so you don't have to flag them down for each thing you want. While the food tasted great, we all ended up with upset stomachs an hour later and we're not sure what caused it but it's highly coincidental that all of us became sick after eating here. I hate writing bad reviews, but this one was needed. Horrible service. 2.5 hours sitting at our table...I'm not even kidding! Other tables seemed to have wonderful service, so this was quite disappointing. I had the crab cakes. They weren't anything special and burnt on the bottom. The creamed corn with bacon was good. One other odd thing about the restaurant ambiance -they only put a white tablecloth and a real lit candle on your table if it's your anniversary. Very odd. We had to ask a waiter why all the tables had a tablecloth but ours. Strange. The restaurant would look much classier with tablecloths on everyone's table. A new suggestion for dinner. After looking over the menu & skimming over some of the reviews, J. Gilberts was our destination & my 1st visit. To ensure we didn't have a long wait for a Friday night we made reservations, yet once we arrived it wasn't as busy as anticipated. We were warmly greeted & welcomed by the distinguished Host who escorted us to our table. In route we noticed a different section of preference & he graciously redirected & sat us accordingly. After we got settled in an employee came over to introduced himself while bringing us water & a complimentary Bread Loaf with a small offering a Whipped Butters. Right behind him was AK, our Server for the evening. Such a pleasant & engaging individual! He provided us with the Dinner Menu (there's a separate menu for the weekend), shared the specials & returned with his multiple timely check ins before we were finally ready to order. I take full responsibility as I enjoy taking my time when visiting a new establishment. Back to the menu of sorts, I could not take my eyes off the Smoked Salmon Rillette Appetizer. I pretty much knew the answer to my question of getting the dish modified...it is smoked & prepared daily. However, AK informed me the next time I make a reservation that's not same day, I could request this dish without Eggs & the Chef would make it happen. Trust & believe next visit reservations has been made. My companion ordered the Maple Plank Roasted Salmon that was lightly basted in a Bourbon Glaze, that came with Yukon Mashed Potatoes, & Green Beans with Pecans. I ordered the Char Crust Ahi Tuna that was prepared with a quick searing, accompanied with Grilled Asparagus & opted for French Fries over the Parmesan Herb Roasted Potatoes. Due to being a sauce craver I requested sides of JG's Original Steak sauce called 'The Hit Sauce' & aBourbon Sauce which complimented my Ahi Tuna perfectly. That & in addition to having a glass of one of my favorite Argentina Malbecs - Alamos. Came here for a birthday brunch a few weeks ago. I had a party of about 24 or so people. The room we had reserved was nice and cozy. Great for semi small get togethers. We came for the brunch buffet on a Sunday. They bring you fresh waffles and syrup to the table - which was my favorite part. The buffet part had salad, sausage, pancakes, omelette/pasta station, seafood area, desserts. The one thing I'd say is that they didn't always keep the area stocked. One part would always be out of something when I came back up - oyster section would run out of lemons but have a lot of raw oysters. Or they would have lemons but no raw oysters. The food I would say is mediocre at best for brunch. Came time to the check, I found it shocking that they were trying to charge a $20 cake cutting fee. This was the first time I have ever seen that anywhere. What's funny is that the servers brought out the cake, knife, spoons, and plates. And left it on the table, no singing (it's fine), did not cut the cake, did not serve the cake. So I was just confused on why we had that charge. I brought this up to our server and she said that was for the "cake service". She did say that she can see if it can be taken off because I guess I didn't look too thrilled about it. Saturday,11/26/23, I met four lady friends for lunch at J Gilbert's in McLean, Virginia. We meet once a month and have a difficult time finding restaurants to our liking. We all work/worked nearby and were familiar with J Gilbert's having dined there many times. Well we are happy it is as good as we remembered. For a large restaurant it feels cozy. Warm fire in the fireplace. No loud music. We were seated in an area apart from the more dense number of booths. It was perfect. We could actually talk without shouting. The food was excellent: from the crusty bread loaves, soups, entree salads and salmon dinner to the carrot cake dessert. The food was all attractively plated and delicious. Also a big thank you goes to our attentive, nice, polite and friendly waiter Roman. I know I'm looking forward to my next visit. Thank you J Gilbert's. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for years to celebrate special occasions. The food is consistently high quality and the service top notch. However I recently took my whole family there to celebrate a birthday. Although our reservation was at 645 it was almost 715 and my kids were getting antsy. I went to the host stand where a very nice person ended up getting French fries for the kids which really helped the wait. Then we sat down at the table and ordered. My son asked for a straw about 3 times before it came. Nobody ever came to fill our water cups. Then in one of the strangest things ever the valet who we dropped the car off with came and gave us our keys back with no explanation as we were eating. Next came asking for the bill about 3 times. When I finally got the bill I noticed that it did not include the restaurant offer that I had just shown to the waiter. Another 10 minutes. Still no water and still no waiter. Finally he comes back and we get a new check. He then tells us our kids dinners included ice cream. The kids obviously want it. Another 10-12 minutes he comes back and again asks what ice cream they want. Now another 15 minutes. Still no water and no ice cream. Now let's talk about the potatoes: AuGratin Potatoes were underdone (not exaggerating - the potato itself was not cooked long enough) and blander than oatmeal. My companion's Yukon Mashed Potatoes were a bit runny. Our waiter seemed like a very nice guy but service lagged and other servers let themselves be heard socializing A LOT. Let's just say that their quality of service decreased drastically over the years. We have been fans of this place since 2017 or 2018. We loved coming here as a group to celebrate special occasions. Every time we come they seem to mess up one or two things which is not a big deal. The last 2 times we have been there, their service was garbage. When we came in our party was not complete and the hostess asked us to wait until at least 7 out of 10 people came then we can seated. As soon as we got seated our server came and said " i will be your server" then left immediately. He came back after 5 mins or so while we were chatting & looking at the menu. He said " there is another big party, you should put in your order quickly." We just got seated few minutes ago. He never introduced himself yet he was rushing us to order. We said "okay" and started looking at the menu to make a decision. He definitely could've said it in a better way "hey guys, our kitchen is backed up. I don't want you to wait for your food for too long so i recommend you to place your order soon." Anyways, we have made our decision and our server was nowhere to be found. He disappeared for solid 10-15minutes after rushing us to order. When he came back he was still as rude as ever and told us to order in our seating arrangement so it will be easier for him to split the check (which is understandable). So we ordered and told who is with who. Food came out pretty fast. Everything looked great. I ordered a medium rare steak & after cutting into it was completely rare/blue and they forgot a side order of crabcake I ordered. Waiter did not check in on us. It took him a while to come back to check in on us. When he came back I told him that my steak is completely rare and I need it cooked a little more & reminded him of the crabcake. Crabcake came out after like 7-8minutes. He took my steak and after few minutes a manager brought it out. He asked me to cut it, so I did. My steak was still super rare. It looked like they just put it under the kitchen window to sit for 5 minutes and brought it back out. I asked them to cook it a little more and they took it back. Manager who brought my steak back out seemed quite annoyed/irritated with me. He brought it back out after few minutes and it was cooked to medium...fine..At that point the rest of my party is more than half way done eating their meals. When they brought my steak back everyone was finished eating. I ate some of my food but packed most of it to go because the rest of my party was done eating their meals and we were ready for desert. We ordered desert ( few carrot cakes and creme brulees). LOL they served our creme brulees with forks... our server brought few spoons and just dropped it in the middle of the table. Where are serving manners? Ok whatever, we ate our desert and asked for our checks. Even though he was telling us he is taking our orders in order so he can split up the check right, our checks came out completely messed up. We asked him to correct it, he went and came back. It came out messed up again. He took it back 3 times and still had everything jumbled together. It took them nearly 30 minutes to correct our checks..... Absolutely ridiculous. Additionally, they need to fix the door locks in the female lavatory. At least 2 of them were broken. This is probably the longest review I have ever written but I am so disappointed with this place. Everyone at my party was disappointed because we really loved their food. If we are coming to spend $70-$100 per person for a dinner, we expect a better service. The chef was able to pair the 3 large plates with spirits made by Dogfish Head! I was sad the portions were so big I couldn't finish - god knows I tried! This is my second visit to J Gilbert's. I had. Lunch today and dinner on my last visit. I made a reservation and upon reaching was seated immediately. My server was very responsive, though I had to request for bread and butter. I had the smoke old fashioned which I thought was a gimmicky. The drinks is bought by the server in a bottle with smoke and once it's poured into the glass, the smoke cannot be felt. I had a 10oz steak with Brussel sprouts and carrots. I had asked for medium but i felt it was little on the well done. I finished off my meal with a Bailey coffee. I felt the front house and the service was top notch but food was meh according to me. I would recommend this place for the ambiance and the service but you might get better steak elsewhere. read more
