By and large I've always enjoyed visiting J. Gilbert's especially over some more underwhelming area steakhouses, but my recent visits have shown a noted decline in quality. Amidst a pandemic when some people are still reluctant to dine indoors and/or restaurants have to make allowances and/or adjustments to their practices, I'm generally one to give places more the benefit of the doubt of late, but only to a point. Our recent visit was hardly inspiring and frankly remedial out of the gate, where we were not even greeted or given water/etc. for at least twenty minutes after being seated. It is also hard to recall the number of times my soda was filled with water but that was not so much as disappointing as to see that one of our steaks ordered was definitely not 6 ounce, but rather 4 ounces--this was blatantly obvious as we had each ordered the same item in that regard, and were charged the same. All this to say that the food is consistent enough to get along with but the attentiveness and quality of service across the board has suffered a notable decline leading to an overall less than ideal dining experience. When you walk into the place it gives off a fancy vibe that did not translate into the service since they all seemed like they did not know what was going on. I got the fixed menu and the first course of the crab bisque was so great that I wish I got that as a whole meal. The filet mignon I got was cooked correctly but seemed like low quality and bland. The mashed potatoes were great. They gave me not a ton of asparagus stalks and they were not great. The carrot cake was a large slice and really good. Overall, the food was all over the place. A fantastic atmosphere but with all the steak houses that are nearby in the area, I would not rank this one high among them. read more

Food and service are both mediocre. Nothing impressive except for the big price tag. We made an appointment for 6:15pm and waited for about 20 mins to be seated. (I don't understand why we made an appointment and still had to wait for so long) We ordered two appetizers and four entrees, and like the mixed seafood grill most. I ordered the scallops with risotto. The scallops were overcooked and chewy. My son's lamb chops were fine, the portion was big but too sweet to my liking. The two scallops and four shrimps in my daughter's mixed seafood grill were the best, juicy and tender. Lastly, my husband's steak was a big miss. He ordered medium rare and got a well-done. They agreed to replace it and we waited another 20-30 mins for it. The most disappointing part was no greetings (not even a "Happy Birthday") at all even though we marked in our reservation that the dinner was a birthday celebration. I am sorry to say this. But this restaurant is definitely not a place we want to visit again for any celebrations in the future. read more

This place was a big recommendation to us by a close friend who lived in McLean a few years ago. Ended up eating here for a business dinner with some clients we were doing some work for. Seemed like a win/win...Turned out to be a gross miscalculation. The prices and the ambience set some pretty false expectations compared to the actual experience. The food, that they got right, was good but, mind you this was after multiple issues. - 6 out of 5 orders were wrong. There were 5 of us total and the staff impressively accomplished: - 1 wrong drink - 3 wrong entrees - of those 3, 1 entree that wasn't even put in at all - of the entree that wasn't put in they brought out the wrong order, followed later by the correct order undercooked, then finally got it right the 3rd time. During the course of this debacle the wait staff also spilled wine all over one of our clients and their food. On top of that, the demeanor of the waitress and the manager didn't seem very concerned. At the end of it all, they only took off the charges for 2 meals, and that was only after raising the issue about it. The total experience was eventful enough that it almost seemed purposeful. I live in walking distance from here and decided to go for my dad's birthday lunch on a Sunday (and while it seems like they're popular for their brunch, we ended up ordering nothing from the brunch menu other than the shrimp & grits). We all ordered coffee first which was fine. I had the salmon, which was dry and tiny. The side veggies were fine. All the dishes were unanimously voted as mediocre and not worth the price point for the filet mignon or the lobster mac&cheese. I'm quite disappointed that this didn't work out since I was looking forward to making it my new regular spot to walk to (recently moved here so I'm still on the hunt and open to suggestions!) What really left a bad taste is the service. Our waiter was a bit snooty and I had to loudly call for him after waiting for what seemed like forever to grab the check. read more

Dinner at J Gilbert's was average. We had reservations but had to wait a little bit before we were seated. Our waitress was sweet and checked in with us often. My pineapple martini was good but very sweet, almost like I was drinking juice. I had the oysters rockerfeller as an appetizer and it was very cheesy so flavor and texture wise, it was just ok. I had a petite filet and sea scallops. As you can see, the scallops were on the smaller size. The sides in my plate were much bigger than my actual surf and turf. My filet was cooked perfectly but lack flavor and the sea scallops were decent. The risotto was ok but the Brussel sprouts were really good. read more

I really want to like this place for when we just want to go somewhere close by for a nice dinner. The place is a bit too old feeling for me but I guess others might find it cozy. The servers are polite but lack personality "flare". The food is really the disappointment here, especially for the prices they charge and considering it's a high end restaurant. The calamari is dry, greasy, and too salty. Then the sourdough bread came and I i was excited about it but this time it tasted stale and chewy. The steaks, as others mentioned, aren't always done to the correct doneness. I'd expect them to be spot on for a steakhouse. For the mixed seafood, I had asked for my salmon to be medium rare, and the server assured me that it's done that way anyways BUT it came as a piece from the tail, that was baked not grilled, and more done than medium rare. The scallops and shrimps were fine but the crab cake was somewhat charred so I didn't have the appetite for it. The grilled asparagus was old and stringy. The cream of corn was the best dish of the whole plate. The presentation display of the plates also lack creativity, nothing like the fun and appetizing photos on their website. Overall it's an over-rated mediocre restaurant that needs some improvements in order to stay competitive. read more

So I'm giving a 5 only because I can't give a 4.8 ... the service by Joel was a 5 and Brandy the hostess sat us early from our reservation time and was super friendly. The food and presentation on the brunch was on point. The only complaint was the prime rib was bland the au jus helped but other than that it was cooked perfectly for a buffet. My veggie omelet was cooked perfectly and made quickly. The tuna char was one of my faves so tender and charred perfectly, the peel and eat shrimp was cooked and seasoned on point. The boys loved the salmon, chicken tenders & macaroni & cheese. The boys enjoyed the "fancy ice tea" included w brunch. On top of all that I was checking on FB and happen to find a 20% off if we mentioned it to the waiter when we got there. Joel was super helpful and made sure we got our $40 off total. I had previously visited for happy hour but this was my first time sitting down to have a meal. I made a reservation on the phone and was excited to try out the food as I had heard great things. Upon arriving, I think I stood at the hostess stand for about 5 minutes after asking the bartender if someone was working the stand. A young lady finally came up and asked how many. We were seated a waitress came by shortly. She was friendly and attentive. The food however was just ok to me. I had the steak frites and fries and the steak was over cooked to me and the fries were too crunchy. The bread and my crème brûlée were the best things I had. The restaurant was relatively quiet but I did go on a Wednesday @ 2:30pm. Try it for yourself but I doubt I will rush back. read more

On the cusp of the 3.5 star experience. My siblings and I wanted to take our parents to celebrate their birthday dinner. We made a reservation a couple days in advance. It was nice they gave us a little private dining area since we had a larger party. When you first walk in it has that traditional steakhouse ambiance. Which I'm surprised they don't offer a wider selection of steaks on their menu. We got fried calamari as a appetizers, a couple of salads and 2 bottles of wine. I had the wedge salad, which was pretty standard. It kind of heavy on the onions. The calamari was delicious though I wished the portion was a little bigger. For entrees I got the bone in rib-eye, with roasted Brussels sprouts, and a baked potato, my wife got the 6oz filet combo with the crab cake, mash potatoes and mushrooms risotto. The rib eye was really tender and flavorful. It was probably the best thing I had there. The Brussels sprout honestly tasted mushy and boiled. The baked potato was pretty dry. My wife's filet was okay, but lacked some flavor. The crab cake, mushroom risotto and mash potatoes were pretty mediocre. My family got other sides like the truffle mushrooms, asparagus, lobster Mac and cheese as well. But nothing really stuck out as impressive besides the rib eye. Service was not bad per se but for a nicer restaurant you would assume they would be a bit more personable and friendly. We had 2 servers and a food runner that helped out our party; like the ambiance, their demeanor it was kind of cold. I am not sure if they are new, but they seemed inexperienced. However, it was nice that they also brought out 2 complimentary desserts for my parents as well. Besides my ribeye, the meal seemed forgettable especially for the amount which you are paying. Only went for brunch and it was not a good experience. For the price, I expected more options and I also expected that the options they did have would be warm and fresh. There was little to no attention paid to the displays of food- they were messy and the signage about what food item was in each dish was either missing, incorrect or face down on the table. There was an abandoned plate of raw oysters sitting on the dessert display- gross. The food was not hot and you had to stand in line to toast a bagel as if you were at a Days Inn. Then good luck finding butter for your bagel... you had to find it over by the cold waffles marked as "whipped cream". I can't say what it's like for dinner, but I'd never go back for brunch... also the booth seating is so low, I had a back ache when I left. The hostess was very nice. read more

Warm and welcoming. With the weather turning cold we celebrated a birthday lunch at J Gilbert's. We arrived separately and each of us upon arrival was greeted with smiles and taken to a booth by the fireplace. Brandi, our lovely waitress, helped with selections. I had the BLACKBERRY JALAPEÑO MARGARITA, absolutely gorgeous. For lunch I had the JUMBO LUMP CRAB MELT. Crab meat mixed with cheddar cheese held in a crispy sourdough bread with tomato, and perfect remoulade sauce and a side of sweet potato fries - a lunch so tasty and big I had to get a box and enjoy it again for lunch the next day. Our birthday dessert selection, with helpful guidance from Brandi was Apple Blonde: butter cake, caramelized apples, vanilla ice cream, toasted pecans. Although we were full we split and nearly finished it. Everything was spectacular! It was a magical birthday lunch, even a manager came by to see how we were doing. My boyfriend and I did the three course dinner for restaurant week. I was very impressed with the menu that consists with about 3-4 different items for each course. I tried the blackberry martini - get it, it's insane. For the first course we got a crisp wedge salad and crab bisque. I was obsessed with the wedge salad. The dressing was delicious! Second course - I had crab cakes which were the best crab cakes I have had outside of Maryland! They were very meaty with very little filler. Very cozy, darkly lit restaurant. The food quality is excellent. The portion sizes are smaller than what I think most of us Americans are used to (a side of asparagus is 3-4 stalks), or maybe the huge plates make the portions look smaller than they are. The service is friendly. The food did come out a little slow, and it did seem like it took a little while for empties to be picked up, but, the place was busy (it was a Saturday night) so I can't really fault them. The bar is nice - but they were out of pretty much every speciality drink. The hard working folks sadly came up with one fail right after the other. Reservation for 5:30. Upon arrival at 5:20 we were told they were running currently 20 minutes behind. Well 45 minutes later we were seated for dinner. They had their traditional Thanksgiving menu as in years past. Drink orders taken. Some drinks arrived back. Fresh bread and butter arrived later as promised. Still waiting on one drink order. First course arrives, all choices look and taste wonderful. Remind waiter of outstanding drink order. Entries arrive. Most of our party have finished first course. One was a little slow. His plate was shoved to the side and his main course landed with an unceremonious plop on the table followed by a half hearted enjoy your meal. The entree is where things really went off track. The turkey appeared to be some kind of white meat in which is was pressed together before cooking. Not a natural shaped nor textured turkey breast. Mashed potatos were alright. Green beans with almonds were a bit overcooked and tough. The yams were fine. The stuffing was pasty and glue like. The cranberry sauce was non existent 1-2 teaspoons at MOST on the plate. I guess the previous diners must have gotten a better share. The deserts were wonderful. This is a great restaurant who just overextended themselves and ruined their presentation of a thanksgiving dinner. A dinner on a "normal" night is spectacular and quite special. None of these things this dinner was. This is a lesson learned.
