Update on my Thanksgiving experience as a helpful tip to those who will come on holidays: be prepared for the extended wait after your reservations. Of course, coming on Thanksgiving, you can expect that the restaurant will be hectic as it is one of the only restaurants open, and you can depend on J Gilberts to have a nice steak and/or Thanksgiving options. It may just be that eating out on Thanksgiving will always give you the con of having to wait for extended periods of time no matter where you go, but if you hope to get dinner here on holidays such as Thanksgiving, likely Christmas, and Mother's day, consider making your reservation at 3 or 4 with the expectation to eat around 630 - 7, especially if you have a party larger than 2. Food was good but after waiting for an hour and a half for it come out, I didn't get a picture since I was too hungry at that point (930) despite our 7 o'clock reservation. Again, it seems all restaurants may overbook on this holiday and don't leave a time limit on guests who are reuniting. Service and food was good, though by the time our food came out, they were out of the creme brûlée. Overall, for my foodies out there, the food is consistently good but not exactly life changing. We chose to have brunch at J. Gilbert's in McLean today based on the wonderful brunches and a meal delivered by Uber Eats that we had eaten in past years. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly hostess who seated us in a comfortable booth. Marsha, our server, was welcoming and obtained our cappuccino, Mimosas, Bloody Mary and waters right away. The seafood buffet offered excellent Chesapeake oysters, spiced shrimp, encrusted tuna, and smoked salmon. The hot buffet included delicious biscuits with sausage gravy, house-made spinach quiche, Chicken piccata with sauce, and two salads: pasta with sundried tomatoes, spinach and feta, and cherry tomatoes with mini mozzarella balls. The prime rib station offered hot, fresh prime rib as well as custom-made omelets. Two cold salads such as a Caesar salad, a fruit salad, and a charcuterie and cheeses display were available. Custom-baked mini desserts included carrot cake with whipped cream and pecan, strawberry cheesecake, creme brulee, panacotta and chocolate mousse, in addition to chocolate-dipped strawberries. Marsha was attentive and made sure that we had clean plates through our brunch. She was a delight to speak with and we felt well taken care of! I'm very disappointed with this place specially for being a Laundrys Restsurant. First of all, it looks like it needs a remodel. Second of all, it is trashy. There is a huge mirror laying on the side of the wall, the tables and chairs old and sticky. The floors are dirty. The happy hour drinks and the food was good, but the service was terrible. They have drinks ok the menu but you can't order them because the restaurant is missing ingredients. It happened to 2 of the drinks I ordered. Finally I just had to say what do you have. The service is supper slow. They only had one waiter to the whole happy hour station. I ordered crab cakes and a few drinks and was there over 2 hours. It took 35 minutes just to get my check when I ordered it. Not to mention, I had a huge argument with the manager, who is just clueless. He blamed it on the fact that he has only been there for 3 months! I was trying to use my Landrys rewards that expired that day and use the remainder of my Laundrys gift card. They made a whole ordeal about their system not being sinked with Laundry yet. They said the only way I can use it is if I called customer service so they can find my balance of my gift card so they can replace it with theirs. That took over 45min by the time they did all that. This is by far the worst experience at a Landrys, that I have had. I will not be going back to that place. read more

Came here for a birthday dinner. I started with the Smoked Old Fashioned and ordered food from the Prix Fix menu. I had the Maryland Crab Bisque, 4 oz. Filet Combo with Scallops, and Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée. I also tried the Crab Cake, Caesar salad, Chocolate Velvet Cake, and Carrot Cake.   For the most part, everything was good, and the proteins were perfectly cooked. My favorites for the evening were the Filet, Scallops, and Carrot Cake. I highly recommend getting those if you find yourself here. I wasn't impressed by the Old Fashioned, Caesar Salad, or the Creme Brûlée. The old fashioned didn't have the standard big ice cube which made it feel cheap to me. The Caesar salad was average and not worth the price as I felt I could make better at home for less. The Creme Brûlée was not made very well-- it was too sweet, half of the top was burned, and the texture of the dessert wasn't perfect which I would expect for the price.   Overall, a good place for a special occasion. Not my favorite but I did enjoy their steak, scallops, and the carrot cake. read more

Here is what you can expect after being seated: 15 minutes for water and server to greet you. Pro tip - Know what you want to order because another 15 minutes might go by before you see the server again. If you want to know the specials, you have to ask. We were never told the specials, I guess because we didn't ask. +30 minutes for the food to come out after you order. After you finish eating: +30 minutes to order dessert. +20 min to receive the dessert and then table is cleared of dinner plates. By the way, that's for ice cream... good luck with anything else. +15 min to get the check unless you ask for it when dessert comes. So yes, it takes a while. Just be prepared. read more

All of the staff including Misty, Michelle, the hostess and our server were very welcoming, engaging and made sure we had a great experience. The brunch offered many options including oysters on the half-shell, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, bacon, sausage, salmon, fresh fruit and salads. I did not try everything but I tried a lot and all of what I had was delicious. I recommend getting there early as we did (10:30am) as the crowd was not yet a crowd. It consisted of prawns (shrimp), a scallop, salmon, a jumbo lump crab cake, Yukon red mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. The lunch price was $33.00. I also had a size of Lobster Mac and Cheese for $13.50. I must say I throughly enjoyed the scallop, prawns and crab cake. I did have to use the lemon wedge to highlight the flavor of the salmon. It was good the way it was prepared but it wasn't the star of the show. I was extremely disappointed in the " Lobster Mac and cheese ". It was Cavatappi pasta with cheese, a few pieces of lobster mixed in and topped with bread crumbs. When most think of Mac and cheese of any sort, you think of lots of cheese baked and topped with more cheese. In my opinion, this was Cavatappi Lobster pasta and cheese. The Thanksgiving dinner was very disappointing, especially the turkey which had the taste and texture of deli meat turkey. It was salty and slimy in texure. By and large I've always enjoyed visiting J. Gilbert's especially over some more underwhelming area steakhouses, but my recent visits have shown a noted decline in quality. Amidst a pandemic when some people are still reluctant to dine indoors and/or restaurants have to make allowances and/or adjustments to their practices, I'm generally one to give places more the benefit of the doubt of late, but only to a point. Our recent visit was hardly inspiring and frankly remedial out of the gate, where we were not even greeted or given water/etc. for at least twenty minutes after being seated. It is also hard to recall the number of times my soda was filled with water but that was not so much as disappointing as to see that one of our steaks ordered was definitely not 6 ounce, but rather 4 ounces--this was blatantly obvious as we had each ordered the same item in that regard, and were charged the same. All this to say that the food is consistent enough to get along with but the attentiveness and quality of service across the board has suffered a notable decline leading to an overall less than ideal dining experience. No way this restaurant is anywhere near a 4 star anymore. I've been here lots of times and less so recently and I was reminded why. While in a great location in McLean, with reasonably easy parking, a generally nice looking dining room/bar (though could be cleaner), a good menu.... The quality and quantity of the food has seriously declined. Service was below average. I remember the days when staff looked professional, the food was delicious and there was a wonderful rotation of specials. I'm saddened to have this experience. A party of 6, each had their own disappointing issues. Mine was the mixed seafood grill- shrimp were small, 2 tiny scallops, a tiny piece of salmon and a decent sized crab cake. The asparagus AND broccolini were tough. All of the items were way over seasoned and extremely salty. $44 for this entree. I appreciated the opportunity to use a birthday free entree coupon but honestly it just wasn't work it even with the $25 discount. Change in staff? Management? Chef? Who knows but there are too many other options now to pay this amount of money for what was a seriously awful experience ( not to mention no one asked if we wanted fresh ground pepper for salads/meals, never got the bread we requested (2x), the Apple Martin was actually a lemon drop, 30 minutes after salads to get entrees) ....
