Dinner was delicious. The staff was wonderful in the atmosphere blew me away. thank you for the amazing birthday dinner.

Scott was absolutely fantastic! He did a terrific job taking care of me and hubs. The wine and cocktail is nice. Beautiful ambience, too!

It was the best steak I've ever had! The wild mushroom risotto was so good. I would recommend this place. Just make sure you make reservations. We had to wait almost an hour but it was worth the wait. read more

My husband and I had begun buying a meal from J Gilbert's on a more frequent basis instead of just birthday, anniversary, etc. There are things are the menu we truly enjoyed. We had called in and placed our order for my milestone birthday dinner. My husband's was fine, but my scallops were very sandy. (This was not the norm.) I called J Gilbert's and left a message. Days went by and I had heard nothing; so I called again, thinking maybe they got busy and forgot. Once again, I received no call back. After three weeks, I called again and requested the manager. I indicated that I had left several messages, as well as emailed, but had received no response. I told him that I had purchased the lobster risotto with seared scallops and in the past, they were delicious; however, this particular time they were very sandy. I gave him the date and time of when we came to the restaurant to pick up our order. He said that he would investigate it. It's been several weeks since my conversation with him and like the other scenarios, I have scenarios for callback, no apology or anything. I am highly disappointed for several reasons: we loved the food and had replaced another restaurant with them. Most importantly, sandy scallops show a lack of cleaning them properly; which is a significant and possible health matter. So the calvalier actions have been most disappointing and below below expectations of a fine-dining restaurant. A little courtesy would have went far; yet this affected my feelings and level of their concern for the customers. Thus due to this particular experience, I can't give a positive rating. Updatea on 12/16/21 - Since it's been over 2.5 months now and ALL I get is "we will have the restaurant reach out to you" and they did once, left no message and haven't called me back (even after calling the restaurant and asking who had tried to contact me and leaving my information), I have dropped them to one star for POOR customer service, even after knowing the whole situation. read more

First time eating here. Great steak cooked exactly at temp ordered. Excellent staff. Waiter and hostess both patient and friendly with our 3 year old who wanted to carry on conversation with them each time they came to the table. We will be returning when we're back in the area. read more

This is a new twist on the upscale casual style. Smoke from the wood-burning grill permeated the place [and my clothes]. Decent but short wine list. Good selection of can't miss entrees like six varieties of steak. Maple-glazed salmon was outstanding. read more

J. Gilbert's always comes through! I've booked a number of private parties at J. Gilbert's and hands down, best service and the food is always spot on. Dawn is fabulous to work with and a true asset! read more

My husband took me out for the steak dinner I had been wanting for my birthday. The bread and butter were perfect to start with as I love both. We then shared the wedge salad which was okay. I loved my filet which was medium rare as ordered. The scallops were nearly perfect. And the asparagus and baked potato were wonderfully flavored. I had absolutely no room for dessert but the chocolate cake was very decadent. I will definitely return. read more

Another great dinner at J. Gilbert's. My wife and I try to go a few time a year and are never disappointed. The food is very good as well as the service. They have a gluten free menu that is ideal for my wife and they have nice selection of beers on draft and in bottles. They pride themselves on their steaks (that are excellent) but they have a nice selection of seafood there as well...good varieties in all parts of the meal. Although not cheap, they have money saving deals often and even at full price, you won't have to suffer with over priced food and the normal horrible service you get just about everywhere else in the area. read more

All I have to say is best steak I ever had!! Been to Ruth Chris and all the others by far this is way better. Sides were awesome too.

I went to J. Gilbert's for the first time about a weeks ago. Yelp was offering a free appetizer, the blue cheese chips, so of course we took advantage. I don't recommend them unless you're an advocate for high blood pressure and strong cheese. Other than that, my entree was about average. I'd return. read more

Been here many times for lunch and happy hour. The grilled steak salad with blue cheese is fantastic. The fried calamari is perfectly lightly breaded. The lobster claws and oysters are a great deal on the happy hour menu. Cocktails are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is classy, yet not swanky/stuffy. read more

First time eating at this restaurant and it didn't disappoint, food came out just the way we ordered it, steaks were cooked correctly and the sides were hot. We will add this to our restaurant rotation for future outings read more

Friends of ours have constantly been talking about how great this place is so we decided to finally try it out for ourself tonight. When we arrived they were on a pretty good sized wait. My wife and I were seated in the bar area which concerned me because I feel like you don't always get the best service or experience in the bar as you would in the dining room. Boy was I wrong. Our server Alisha was amazing. From the second we sat down she made us feel like we were the only people in the restaurant. She gave us great recommendations and even helped us with wine pairings that were spot on. We are foodies who dine out very often and this was easily top five dining experiences in our entire lives. The food was amazing but the service was top notch. We will definitely be back and will tell everyone we know to ask for Alisha's section every time they come! read more

I had the Porterhouse there and it was great. Perfectly cooked at medium rare. The spouse had the filet mignon and she didn't enjoy her piece of meat as much as I did. The filet was a little overcooked for medium rare. The lobster mac and the sweet potato fries were good though. Surprisingly, the service was fast. The food came out pretty quick. Nice choice for a steakhouse in St. Louis County. read more

Not bad and not great. But for the price, it should be better. Best was the service and the bread. I had the tuna w foyot sauce. Asked for it seared and it was not nearly pink enough. Worse, the foyot sauce does not go with the tuna (too rich). Waitress said it was a great combo but I disagree. And she said if I didn't like it I could get a different sauce. Later, when I asked for another sauce the 2 options had no place near a tuna steak (were from 2 other dishes). Wife's crab cakes were much better. But for McCormack and Schmick's prices, I would rather just go there. read more

One of the better steak restaurants in St. Louis. We came here for my mom's birthday and enjoyed the experience very much. We easily made reservations for 9 people with no problem. Our waiter was very friendly and recommended some delicious appetizers that we just loved. The restaurant looks great on the inside and while being upscale, does not require formal attire. Our server helped us decide what to order, giving some great suggestions. Everyone enjoyed their meals very much. Expect to pay around $40-50 per person for the dinner, but know that it is worth the price. Overall, a wonderful experience and I would go back in a heart beat. read more

There was a shard of broken glass in my drink. All they did was offer to not make me pay for that glass of wine. When the bill came, it still had everything on it. I had to make them take it off. I don't plan to go back. read more

J Gilbert's - I had a little surprise in my drink. Yes, that is a shard of broken glass. - Seafood Near Me - Des Pers, Missouri

I cant say enough nice things about this restaurant. My wife, her best friend and I went to dinner last weekend and everything was great. This place has outstanding food and has great prices in comparison to other "nicer" restaurants. We had just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary at a AAA 4 diamond restaurant in downtown St. Louis and though the service and food were better at J. Gilberts. So much so we were laughing at dinner considering the other dinner was almost triple the price. Great steaks but I wish the scallops were a bit larger but that's a bit nitpicky. read more

We only went for a bottle of wine on my birthday, but the bartender was awesome the decor was great. Can't wait to try the food.

This was our first visit for our 10yr anniversary. We have only one word...AMAZING! The food was incredible. The surf n' turf is worth it! The best filet mignon and crab cakes we've ever had. The service was also great. Our server, Chris I think (?), was great. He went through the menu thoroughly and provided great suggestions and service. read more

We were very disappointed with our meal Saturday. I'm only giving 2 stars because the service was outstanding, otherwise it would be 1star. My pork chop was so so, tough and fatty, my carrots so tough I couldn't cut them with a steak knife. My husbands steak was also tough. He actually said Outback had better steaks. Even the creme brûlée was disappointing and I love dessert. Our server Ethan was a delight as was everyone else we interacted with. Still we most likely won't be back read more

J. Gilbert's, you failed terribly and ruined what should have been a great family celebration On January 5, 2019 I took my family of 10 to J. Gilbert's in West County Mall, St. Louis. My wife and I have dined there several times and always enjoyed the excellent food. We were there to celebrate her 65th birthday. When we arrived the hostess informed us she had 2 tables for us. I immediately said no, we reserved 1 table. She looked at her book and said oh yes, it is one table! But... this night the server discriminated against and demeaned my African American son-in-law over and over. He would ask me if he could remove my plate or dish and just take my son-in-laws without asking. Actually trying to remove plates before he was finished with it. My daughter ordered a "Cowboy" Steal which is the most expensive they have. Her and my son-in-law both ordered "medium rare" temperature. They were served rare and when they could finally get the servers attention he informed them their steaks were prepared right implying they didn't know!!!! When the manager returned the steaks he did tell them he was sorry. My other daughter was a long time server at Niche and agreed they were "rare"! The server corrected my son-in-law about how we should drink the 2, $55.00 bottles of wine he brought in and demeaningly treated him as if there was no way a black man could know about wine. Even to the point of telling him that he, the server could bring some "good" wine! My bill was $750.00 plus a $150.00 tip. I normally tip 25% but because of the discrimination I lowered it. Now I wish I would have given even less! Over all, it was a very disappointing and unexceptionable. Not only my family but at least 5 other families we have told about this experience have decided they will not return to J. Gilbert's. Discrimination is not tolerable. J. Gilbert's, you failed terribly and ruined what should have been a great family celebration read more

I like the food I've gotten but it's just a weird vibe. Servers often seem distracted or lost. There's never more than five people in the dining area. Always more in bar than dining. read more

Unbelievable food and service. All 6 of our meals came out timely and piping hot. The Cajun filet was probably the best filet we have ever had! Sides are so good and they make their own ice cream and sorbet. Sam our server was awesome! A must try! read more

My wife and I were looking for a good steak tonight and frequent many of the local establishments and whenever we travel always try to find the best steak places from NY to St John's Island and Southern California. We had the nite to our self and looking for a quite dinner and ran across an ad for J Gilberts - at West County Mall. We didnt know J Gilbert's was at WCM, but decided to give it a try. Once the car door opened I knew we were in for a treat. I could smell the wood-fired steaks being prepared all the way in the parking lot. The staff was excellent from the moment we stepped into the door to the minute we left. Our waiter Jason B. made a great evening that more pleasurable. My wife had the wood-fired filet and I had a combo of wood-fired filet and the mesquite grilled salmon. The food was perfectly prepared and our side dished were very complimentary. After dinner we decided to indulge in a vanilla creme brulee and the chocolate velvet cake and both desserts did not disappoint. Bottom line - you get what you pay for and if you want a great steak look no further than J Gilberts in St Louis. read more

Just went there for a pharmacy dinner . Was way less than impressed ... I ordered my steak rare and it came out crisp on the outside and at best medium rare in the center . Any additional steak butters were extra so I didn't push , so my dry steak totally lacked flavor ... I would suggest offering steak butters at no cost since there was clearly limited steak seasoning and more sides to help bring out flavor for the meal ... read more

SO good! I celebrated my birthday there and they were so good to me. I had a 4oz filet combo with the scallops, Lobster mac and cheese and creamed corn. I went all out and boy was it worth it! Everything was delicious. I highly recommend it!! Our server Formichael was great too! read more

I've been here a few times and every time has been fabulous. To start, the service is always top-notched, from the hostess to the waiters, an experience actually worth your tip money. The starter loaf of sourdough bread is always served hot and fresh, with two different and delicious butters on the side. I always opt for the filet and scallop combo, and topping it with one of the accompanying butters is worth the upcharge! All the sides are great, I especially love the mushroom risotto. I usually come here around my birthday because if you sign up for their emails they send you a coupon for a free entree up to $25 with the purchase of a second entree (you can apply this towards a more expensive entree). And this time when I arrived I was given a birthday card good for a free dessert. It was a treat meal, but always well worth the money. read more

Poor attempt at a "high end" steak house. In comparison to any other high end steak house in St. louis this is the absolute worst. From the hostess to the wait staff, they give the feel of applebees or tgi fridays not a fine dining establishment. The steak was over cooked, potatoes burnt, crem brulee burnt, oysters the size of dimes. And there is nothing like maroon 5 and counting crows playing through the speakers to compliment your fine dining experience.....I mean, are you kidding me?? This place doesn't even deserve to be in the same city as Citizen Kanes or Annie Gunns. J. Gilbert if you are reading this, please just take your garbage, over priced, applebees wannabe steak house to the Mississippi and put it out of its misery. One of the best restaurants that I have been to in St. Louis. My steak was fantastic, the creamed corn with bacon and the scalloped potatoes were amazing. My new favorite restaurant. Can't believe we never had been. Luckily we discovered it a few weeks ago and went again last Tues. I know, I know. It's a steak house in a mall. But do yourself a favor and skip the steak ... if you can muster the will power. The lamb chops are the best I've ever had. Pair it with the Conundrum red wine. And finish it all off with a barrel aged Manhattan. You won't be disappointed. read more

If your after atmosphere, this place is pretty good. The food is OK, but not great. The biggest problem I had with with the smoke aroma. It's almost like your in a smokey bar. It gets in your nose on your clothes,it's in the butter, the bread, and everything that's grilled, including the asparagus. That was it for me, I'll stick to Annie Gunns or Sams. read more

4 Star rating because I was a fan! My wife and I have eaten at J. Gilbert's, on numerous occasions, since they opened their doors. Our most recent visit was May 23, 2015. My wife wanted to order from their Prix-Fixe 3 course menu but preferred a different salad than the two that were offered. The salad she wanted was the same price as the one offered on the Prix-fixe menu. Before we ordered I asked the waiter if we could make that change. He went to check and he returned to tell us they couldn't do that. Being curios as to the reason I asked the General Manager to explain why the change couldn't be made seeing that the salads were the same price. His explanation was it would have a negative effect on the restaurants profit margin. Our check for the evening was $143.00. My wife and I have decided to remove J. Gilbert's from our list of eating places. I wonder how that will effect their profit margin. read more

Had a business dinner with clients and associates, and someone recommended J. Gilbert's because of where we were meeting. Because it's in a mall, the parking was awful. But the establishment itself is very nice, and was comfortable. I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Everyone was extremely nice and our waiter was friendly, knowledgable and didn't miss a beat. I would give him 5 stars if I could. I ordered a bottle of wine for our clients based on the waiters recommendation, and it was the right call. The menu is plentiful and there's a lot of choices. To be honest, the best thing about the meal was the sides. I went with the roasted brussels sprouts and scalloped potatoes. Could not have been any better. My main disappointment was the main star of the meal...the steak. I ordered a filet. It was cooked very well, but the cut itself was absolutely atrocious. It probably was one of the worst cuts I've had at a steak house. For what the price is set at, I expected the steak to be the star, and it was far from that. They evidently smoke their meat to a degree because all of us said they could taste a sweet smokey flavor. Again, okay, but not great. I wish they would have noted this on the menu. I would definitely go back for a happy hour or lunch. But doubtful I'd return to spend that amount for that dinner if the quality of meat cut isn't any better than what I had. read more
