Being a steak lover and having frequented most of St. Louis' top steakhouses, I made sure to order a steak. I really enjoyed the filet and potatoes au gratin. Also the waitress, Ashley, was very nice. Based upon food, service, and environment I would have given 4 stars, but it seemed a little pricey for what you get (though I should note we did present a coupon which brought the price down to a fairer amount). The steak was similar to the less expensive steak I usually get at Bravo. I don't think J Gilbert's restaurant can really compete with St. Louis' top steakhouses. read more

My husband and I took my life long bff here for dinner to celebrate a special occasion and we were very impressed. The service was impeccable. The cocktails were delicious. Not too strong but not watered down. The food was fantastic. Everything surpassed our expectations. An excellent restaurant for a special occasion or date night. Highly recommend J. Gilberts. read more

Amazing place, great attention from everyone, food is awesome. Recommend the crab cakes, and the Tomna Hawk special was amazing! High quality! read more

Superb service. Excellent food. They take great care with their side dishes, which are every bit as worth going for as the steak. You can keep your prices down by splitting a meal. The portions are that large. It is a bit noisy though, frankly, but that seems to be the case in every place you go now. read more

J Gilberts is usually our go to special restaurant but we were disappointed this time. At the table I ordered a Stella draft beer. It arrived with 1/3 foam. I asked the server to redo and he brought out a still beer with absolutely no head and filled exactly to the line on the glass leaving a noticeable unappealing gap between the beer level and rim. After finishing that I ordered a second and received the same presentation. If I'm spending well over $200 on a meal, I certainly don't expect for the server and bartender to play games with me over an extra ounce of beer. I should also mention that my $32 pork chop was overdone. read more

Very disappointed. What was a great experience turned into a nightmare. From start to finish. Food was meh and the service just lacked. Really went downhill since I last ate here. Sad read more

I'm sure this sounds snotty, but like a few other Yelpers mention, I'm not big on the mall and the chain restaurants that are frequently attached. This has as much to do with the parking and crowds as the often mediocre food. However, I think there has been a backlash to the average food of the Houlihan's and Cheesecake Factories of the world, and this is evident in the newer restaurants that are going into malls. West County has a couple of gems, McCormick & Schmicks and J. Gilberts. Sorry Flemings, but this is a new favorite! The ambiance and decor are cozy and intimate...lots of wood, leather, and dark lighting. Great wine list with reasonable prices. We sat at the bar to eat, which was very deep with plenty of room to spread out. The bartender was spot-on...helpful and attentive while letting us carry on with our work chatter as it was a business function. I had the surf and turf, a 4 oz filet and crab cake. The filet was the perfect size, though maybe a bit more medium as opposed to my requested mid-rare. It had a fantastic smoky flavor. The crab cake rocked...literally a scoop of crab meat with a delicious remoulade on the side. The two free sides are a huge bonus. I know a traditional steakhouse is a la carte, but with the high cost of a good steak, that really adds up. This is an opportunity for a high end steak with awesome, free sides. A side note is that they have great bread. It came with regular whipped butter and pastrami flavored butter. Yes, pastrami flavored butter- pepper, coriander, and liquid smoke added in. Interesting and unusual, but fun! Why not mix it up? It would have rocked even more if it was served with rye bread, but it was still pretty tasty. Something I am fairly sure I will not see anywhere else (ever!). read more

This place is the best. We have been there several times and the staff and service are superior. The food is always cooked perfectly and the pricing for a good steak house is right on. You get sides with your meal and don't have to pay a la carte. Great food and gray place. read more

We live in the neighborhood so finally found the time to visit. I had a fillet mignon with spinach, potatoes and mushrooms. My wife had the lamb with rissotto. While the food was good, it wasn't great. My steak seemed not to have any seasoning and was unevenly cooked. Medium on one half while more rare on the other. They talk about the smoky flavor but I thought my wife's lamb looked a bit black. Her seasoned potatoes were OK but she thought the risotto was just so-so. My spinach and potatoes were very good but the mushrooms were nothing to talk about. We also ordered tomato and mozarella salads and were good. Total bill was just under $100 but I was not wow'ed by the food at all. Service was prompt but plastic. Our waitress might as well have worn a smiley mask and done just as well. I noticed the others seemed to be the same way. read more

My husband and I made this our first stop before our honeymoon flight and we are so happy we did. We had the shrimp durango (my husband loved it so much he asked our server to just bring him the sauce that was on the app) and crab bisque. I am from the east so when I say the crab is good, it is good. For our entrees he had the porterhouse and could not stop talking about how great it was. He is quite biased towards his own grilled steaks, so when he says it is great, it has to be amazing. I had filet combo with crab cake (not good, sorry, partial to the East with crab cakes, always a disappointment for me west of Maryland), brussel sprouts (I was in heaven) and mashed potatoes (decent). For dessert he had the creme brûlée and I had a huge slice of heavenly coconut cake. Their drinks were delightful and I highly recommend a glass of their Rodney Strong cab...delicious! We WILL be back and we cannot wait! read more

So the food...fantastic. The wait staff...excellent. My fiancé and I had a wonderful time throwing our engagement party at this venue until the general manager treated us terribly. He was rude, condescending, and spoke to us like we were children. It was so disappointing that our special event ended that way because we had such high expectations. I won't one star this establishment because one person was terrible, but I won't continue to give a restaurant my business when it is being led by a person who doesn't appreciate my business. I'll be happy to return when the general manager is no longer a part of this otherwise fine restaurant. Thank you to the rest of the staff, and it really is unfortunate that you have to operate under a man you feel the need to apologize for. Hope things get better. read more

Incredible service and food. I ordered the filet/shrimp combo with lobster Mac & cheese and brussel sprouts as sides. Everything was delicious! read more

Terrible service, waited too long for the food, and the food wasn't worth the wait. Management handled it poorly don't come here.

Amazing service and the food is sooooooo delicious and high quality. Dining experience was on par with Flemings and other high-end steak places, but minus the pretentiousness. It is a very nice but casual place on the inside. Would highly recommend the lamb and lobster mac n cheese! The wedge salad was great too--enough to share between two people. My mom enjoyed her lobster as well. We will be back!!! read more

Celebrated a birthday for my daughter @ J Gilbert's this evening. They always do a great job and tonight was above expectations. Joseph, our server, was exceptional. My Tomahawk Ribeye was perfectly prepared and everyone's dinners were great. The 50% off wine special was an added treat. Highly recommended for special occasions or simply those times when you want a good dining experience. read more

The food tasted good. Everything was cooked properly but the staff was uneducated and not attentive. The prices are ridiculous. The manager was good and did his job. There's no point in letting a manager know that the chef is raking the customer over the coals to cover food cost this issue lays on the shoulders of the executive chef and the ownership. I'm not going to go on some nonsensical rant to try to get someones attention or a response. This post is just to inform. If you want some pretty good seafood and steaks in a very beautiful restaurant go here. If you want the same quality at a third of the price find a first year culinary student and take them to whole foods and have them prepare the food for you in your house with the lights in your dining room on low and light something on fire. read more

We eat out every night of the week. We are always looking for a good happy hour. This one is great! Goes till 7, which is always a huge advantage in the happy hour world!! Great service, the bartenders are very friendly and make you feel welcome. The cushy chairs make for a comfortable experience if you like to sit at the bar. Try the pretzel crusted onion rings!! A big YUM! read more

Service was bad. Very slow. No hustle. Our food took over an hour to come out and they were not busy. Complained to the server and he didn't seem to care. Then complained to the manager and she was indifferent. Food was okay and not worth the wait. Half crab sandwich was the size of a White Castle slider. read more

This is a great place to have a nice quite sit down dinner. The steaks are very good and the sides are incredible. I've eaten there several times and its priced a little on the high side but hey you get what you pay for and the steaks are worth it. I've eaten the bone in ribeye and let me tell you don't sell yourself short and get the mac & cheese. Will continue to eat here and you should too read more

Very nice atmosphere, had a couple appetizers at the bar, the staff was very friendly. The maytag chips are very good, especially if you're a fan of blue cheese. I also ordered the shrimp durango, which came out perfect, my only concern is the dish is slightly spicy, but the flavors were excellent. Happy hour gives everyone a reason to visit during prime hours. Next time I'll try dinner and give my next review, so should you. read more

My wife and I were done with the mall last night and a nice lady told us the restaurant had only been opened two days and implored us to try it. So, with cash in our pockets, we said "sure, why not?" Good quality steaks and they don't make you buy separate sides like their competitors. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. The decor is very nice and the huge fireplace is a great touch. This would be a great place to have a drink and eat some appetizers at the bar. I would come here again. My goal next time is to try the fire roasted chicken. As a side note, get the baked potato as a side. I kept eating my wife's! read more

I have had many Ahi Tuna entrees, from Cape Cod to the Keys and J. Gilberts is by far the absolute best. It was fired grilled with a sauce that left me wanting more. I tried my friends scallops that was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. If you are ever in St. Louis, Columbus Ohio, Kansas City, go, it is a sure win. The sides were green beans with pecans and Brussels sprouts. Awesome! Our server Joseph was awesome. We went back 2 nights later and I had the same Tuna. It is that good, read more

Food was good - not great and over priced ($2 for each kids juice refill as an example). We had a free appetizer - chips with blue cheese. Sounded good but looked like processed blue cheese poured over greasy home-made chips. Yuck. We had Jessica as a server - poor poor service. We even told the manager about the poor service, he stopped by to apologize for he delay getting our check but made effort to correct the situation, offer to comp a drink - nothing, The check delay was such a small part of the bad experience. We dine out often and will not come back. read more

First time here. Was a little skeptical at first since the little one was with us. User reviews said it's not kid friendly but our 8 y/o was able to find something on the kids menu. Our server was knowledgeable, very kind and swift. Bread and butter are a indication to us if the appetizer & main course will be good (not sure how that came about with me & the hubby)- and both butters were good & the bread was warm, soft and flaky. Drinks are on point and the crab cake appetizer was delicious. Now to wait on the main course- filet, potato & sautéed spinach. Exceptional!!! read more

I cannot wait to go back. Service & food was fantastic. I have been dreaming about their tortilla soup since I left. It has all fresh ingredients, they poured the broth on at the table. Drinks were great. Seems to be a good place for a special occasion! read more

We had a wonderful luncheon in the private dining room today. Great service and delicious food! The wait staff were patient with our chattering and very helpful with menu. They offered to do separate checks for us too. And, there's no cover charge for the use of the room! Yay J. Gilbert's! read more

This place is a gem! It's difficult to say which part of the experience at J. Gilbert's excels the most - the delicious food, the excellent service, or the beautiful decor. We had top notch steaks and crab cakes with our own choices of wonderful sides. Absolutely loved the ambiance of the dining area with a relaxing view of the fire wall from our comfy booth. Jason B takes care of the total experience with service that excels - attentive and polite. It's an experience you'll want to have over and over again. read more

I don't know how anyone could have a bad experience here. Our server, Jessica, was super knowledgeable and helped us plan the perfect meal. My guy and I split a Caesar salad (big enough to split!) and then I ordered the fillet and lobster tail (and added scallops) and he got the 16oz strip. I want to shout from the rooftops about how great my meal was. Everything was cooked perfectly. After looking at the dessert menu, we decided on the frozen flavors (ice cream made in house). It came with 3 nicely sized scoops (we chose strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate). It was a perfect ending to a great meal. Expect to spend about $100 if you get drinks but it's completely worth it! read more

Warm, friendly, nicely lit sorta rustic! The Seafood here is really good. Scallops are my fave. I didnt have a wine, but friends have said the bar is good enough to stop in for alone. So maybe our next trip there read more

This place is one of my favorites, the food is delicious, the service is impeccable. Although the wait staff are all excellent Jason is exceptional. He remembers your selections from the last time and he takes outstanding care of you the entire time you are there. This is a classy place! read more

Our 3rd time here, we had a group of 11. All enjoyed their food and Scott took very good care of us. When serving the entres, they used enough servers to get the meals on the table at once, so no one was sitting there without food in front of them for more than a moment. Slightly noisy is the only negative but we will definitely return. read more

What happened to this place? Did they change management, get sold to somebody new, or the chef and kitchen staff? I used to come here for a great steak and dining experience. This weekend, we had the worst service (we had to ask many times for water, bread and any service). They brought a tasteless, dry, gamey steak that was not cooked properly, the potato was cold and the cheese on the potato had hardened. We even had to ask for steak knives to eat the steak. Normally they provide them when you order the steak. Plus the flies outside buzzing around the tables. WHAT HAPPENED? read more

i had only been (and known) about the JGilbert's in Virginia until this past weekend. i decided to have a surprise bday dinner for my bf. the dining experience was wonderful our meal incredibly tasty (the filet combo with scallops/crab cake and 2 sides) but we were seated 40min after our reservation time even though we arrived on time. when i went back to ask the seating hostess about our table she asked whether we were on their waitlist... this was the same person i had 'checkin' with 40min ago. the meal made up for this but considering it was a bday celebration it left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

If you not only want great food service, but also a great experience, J. Gilbert's is the place. Not only was the food and drinks fabulous, our server was top notch (thanks, Nikki!). Put J. Gilbert's on your must go to list...you won't be disappointed! read more

Love this place. Sometimes it gets busy and the wait is a bit long. However the food is fantastic as well as the service.

Wonderful experience overall. Went last night for a birthday dinner and had a first rate time and meal. Our server recommended the salmon and this was surprising since the place is a steakhouse. nonetheless two at our table ordered the salmon and the server was right on. Perhaps the best salmon we had ever tasted. The steaks were fantastic as expected. Had the tuna, steak carpacio, and chips for apps and all were yummy. only complaint was that the sour dough roll was over cooked and kind of burnt on the outside. not much of a complaint when thats free anyway. Our server was first rate and the place performed very well. The bar had plenty of action going on for a monday night but the dining room was kind of empty, maybe 7 tables or so. maybe this is St. Louis Monday night. Take my advice go there. This place rocks. side dish of mushrooms is worth the extra bucks too read more

Sundays is my favorite day to eat here with the 1/2 price bottles of wine the onion rings are a meal in themselves but the salmon is what I really come here for I haven't tried any other entrees because it's just that good served with potatoes and green beens that are equally as good the only problem I have is that I'm always to stuffed to try a dessert read more

Had a really cozy late lunch after shopping. It was cold outside and the super huge fireplace made the perfect atmosphere including the low lighting.
