Went here with my wife and son on a recommendation from our niece. We went in the late afternoon on the 4th of July and there was a line out the door. The line moved fast and when we made it through the door we were greeted by a very friendly crew. The three of us agreed, this was the best dog we've ever had! Simple menu; all beef or polish cross cut dog, chips, and a drink. Each of us got the polish with a drink. Total bill was $18; the tax is built in. Add-on choices are their special sauce (a must have), onions, sauerkraut, banana peppers, jalapeños, and a pickle spear. Also, don't forget a good amount of celery salt. It brings it all together! I was shocked my the service we received. The tallest guy who was there taking our order was very rude and didn't know how to ask politely to shut the door to keep the air conditioning from going out. We had a large party and just arrived trying to get situated and he called me out specifically about the door. To make matters worse the party that came after us did the same thing and he didnt say anything to them. Ruined the entire experience. I will not be going back there. If you are worried about the air conditioning then figure out a better place to have the register instead of right in front of the door when you walk in with no place for those ordering to stand. read more

Not really anything to complain about with a Jdawg really. I don't really even like hot dogs that much but usually end up getting two each time Jdawgs is suggested. I just don't get it. At all. I've had plenty of good franks in my life. Most of them have been dirty water dogs late at night, in various cities across the country. There's somewhat of an art to a solid dog, but most of it comes down to ratio. The cardinal sin is having too much bun. There also has to be some flavor bomb that gives the dog some character. In New York it's kraut with sweet onion tomato sauce. In LA it's the bacon that wraps it. In Chicago it's piccalilli... ...in Utah apparently it's a brown sugar and honey barbeque sauce. But sauce alone does not a good hot dog make. I've always found J Dawgs beef and Polish dogs to be on the dry side. It doesn't help that the (also dry) bun hangs off the frank about an inch and a half on each side. Their kraut is boring. I always finish feeling highly unsatisfied. Long story short, it's a bad hotdog with good sauce. Save your $4. read more

It's been a long time since I've been to J-Dawgs. For one thing it was still in the photo-hut back then. For another, the owner was the one schlepping the dogs to passers-by and he hadn't been doing it for very long. Not sure if that's still the case since they moved to a bigger locale next door. The problem with that is, the smell hitting you as you are walking down from campus is probably NOT as mouth watering now that it isn't billowing from an over-sized Snoopy dog house in the middle of February. Could anything be more tempting? Just to set the record straight, this isn't really a "Chicago Dog" but it's in that Wrigley-sized ballpark. It's similar in that it's a hot dog with tons of stuff on it. You can get a big slice of pickle but I'm not sure if you can get neon green relish. The thing that sets J-Dawgs apart from other similar dogs is the sauce. And as people have said, it's amaz-a-zing. Tried to make it at home now that I've left Utah and didn't even come close. It's a decent hot dog. It follows the mantra of almost every other popular place in town. If you dump enough sugary sweet sauce on it, they will come -- and come they do. I love the menu. They do one thing. They make hot dogs. I like that. OTOH, they better do that one thing well. Compared to the Wienerschnitzel, it's a very good dog. Compared to the hot dog at Costco, it's not any better, just different -- in my opinion. Plus, I can get relish at Costco and I can't at J Dawgs. I understand the dog is made for them. I had the Polish, and it only has hints of Polish spices. It's a very tame Polish. Apparently the buns are made locally for them. This is one place where having it made locally, does not automatically make it better. The bun is kind of chewy and doughy. I'd prefer many commercial brands that have been making hot dog buns for decades and have it figured out. They also practice the deplorable practice of slicing the hot dog half way through a half dozen times while they grill it. I assume it's supposed to get more grill flavor, or something. What it actually does is let what little moisture and fat that is in the dog drip out, so you get a pretty dry hot dog. I would also really like a place that gets dogs with a natural casing so you get that snap when you bite into it. Now to that "secret sauce". It's as sweet as the red sauce you get for dipping an egg roll in at Panda with some molasses added for color. This dog is obviously made for a different demographic than me. I am a J Dawgs fan. I love the hot dogs, I love the toppings, I love the shop, and I love that they are a Provo startup. I do not, however, like their prices. I'll get to that later, let's talk about the good first :). First of all, to those who keep referring to J Dawgs as Costco hot dogs, you have no idea what you are talking about, and you are just saying that because you heard someone else say it, who probably heard someone else say it...so on and so forth. Go to Costco, get the cheap dogs that you are referring to (not the more expensive branded hot dogs that weren't even manufactured by Kirkland...which is the Costco brand) and try one in the same sitting as a J Dawg. Let me know how that goes. Anyway, the only thing I regret when I go to J Dawgs is not having the money to come more often...and the occasional beefy burp that may slip out at inopportune moments :). As for the dogs, I personally like beef over polish, but the polish dogs are also super yummy. I usually put all of the toppings on, because that is part of the experience! (except I usually choose banana peppers or jalapeños, never both). And make sure you try the sauerkraut at least once. You will be pleasantly surprised! The downfall is the prices. I know that J Dawgs is trying to make a living, but 4 dollars for a dog can get slightly pricey. Especially since I know how much they used to charge when they first started. Need to set a few things straight about this place. Seeing some misinformation in these reviews: 1.) Dog recipes -- completely original. They had a meat supplier in SLC for the first 5 or 6 years they were open. The supplier went out of business sometime in the last year, so J & Co. had to buy the recipe from them and coach a new supplier in Denver in making it. Took them 3 months or so of trial and error. New supplier is the same company that makes the Wienerschnitzel dogs, but J-Dawgs' recipe is all their own. 2.) Buns -- delivered fresh daily from the Provo bakery, 1 mile away (from original location). 3.) Sauce -- Homemade. Super sweet, a little spicy. They do sell it by the bottle. 4.) Sauerkraut is mild. Not too sour, I mean. Polish + sauce + onions + kraut + 2 pickles, Maui Onion Chips, Apple Beer. Pound. Repeat. Best dogs in Utah County. *****I'm adding a fifth star. It's official. I DO like hot dogs. Who knew? I just didn't understand before that there are good hot dogs and bad hot dogs. THESE are good hot dogs. Some great things for me about J Dawgs. - The dog was big and beefy and they cut it it in a really cool way so the juice doesn't splatter out when you bite it, and so there are more grilled surfaces. And the meat was a great texture. Felt like eating meat, not something assembled. - The special sauce. I like sweet - so the sweet BBQ was a great compliment to the rest of the salty goodness. - The bun was big and soft and special. Not just a grocery store bun. Something above and beyond. - I enjoyed seeing that it was just some young guys making it happen. In a college town especially, I just really appreciate a success stories. - It was really delicious! A couple of things that may have made it even better for me. - I went with the beef dog because they mentioned the polish dog was spicy. But, I tasted hubby's polish (he's so generous) and it was not too spicy at all and had a better flavor. That's just a preference thing. I know next time to order the polish :) - I wish there were a couple more different type of topping offerings. It was pretty much just salty/spicy options. I was hoping for...tomato? maybe a red pepper for a more neutral flavor? Something that would add texture and juicy-ness but not spice or salt.... I guess what I'm trying to say is, these dogs are more about the meat than the toppings. And for me, I like a good dog with great toppings. While this is a great dog with good toppings. All in all though, it's the place to go for a dawg if you're hanging out in that great lil' college town called Provo. read more

I love the J Dawg. Meat, on bread and covered with shiz. I realize there are those who disdain the hot dog because it's the odds and ends of a carcass, and whatever/whomever falls into the meat grinder all cased in an organ. I believe however, that the use of what would be wasted makes for the noblest meat of all! And the dogs at J are both noble and tasty. My theory on the infamous sauce it that it's made from pureed fairies, leprechauns, and only the finest mermaid breasts. A good dog is also covered in peppers, a pickle, and a pile of kraut. Today I had an issue with a leaky dog that oozed out and besmirched my boot and trousers. Not a black mark, but certainly a tale of caution. If the J just served Coca-cola products, I would visit there with greater frequency. read more

I've eaten here 10 or so times. The ambiance is great and the dogs taste good, but I can never shake the (very oft-cited) feeling that J-Dawgs are just Costco hot-dogs with some really good special sauce. Definite plus that it's close to BYU campus, but I just can't endorse it when Costco gives you basically the same dog (albeit without the sauce) and a drink for $1.50. I thought I hated hot dogs until the day I entered the doors of the Provo Jdawgs last week. Not only am I now the most loyal dawg fan in the world; but I am also an avid promoter. If anyone from out of town ever needs a recommendation I will take them there. A great price for a great product. Listen to me now and believe me later: the hype about J Dawgs is COMPLETELY TRUE! I've had great hotdogs from street venders in New York City and Chicago, and I can honestly say that J Dawgs is as good or better than anything I've ever experienced. The secret may be in the simplicity. Your choices are basic: beef or Polish. You have 6 condiments (sauerkraut, onions, yellow peppers, jalapeños, pickle, and special sauce) to choose from, and that's it. A dog is $3, $4 with a drink, and $5 with chips. I started with a beef dog with sauerkraut, onions, and special sauce. It was very tasty. The sauce is very unique--similar to BBQ sauce--and it adds a lot. This whetted my appetite enough that I had to try another--this time a Polish dog with the works. It was even better than the first one. The dogs have a nice "snap" and a robust, meaty flavor. The other ingredients somehow just work perfectly together. The atmosphere is casual and fun. It's a great place to watch a game with some buds. It is also very cool to have the original J Dawg's shack still standing nearby, in honor of the tiny ancestral home of the best hot dogs west of the Mississippi. I loved this place and I will return ... hopefully soon ... very soon. read more

Here is the problem with J Dawgs: The buns are awful. Too much bread is what kills this pretty flavorful beef sausage. The kraut is acceptable and the sauce is pretty good. But the extremely dense, overly large bun does little to complete a good hot dog experience. A nicer, less dense baguette would add another star to this earnest Utah start-up. read more

I love hot dogs, but being an extremely picky eater, I have some requirements when eating them. #1 - The hot dog must be 100% beef. Check. #2 - The hot dog must be very freshly cooked on a grill. Check. #3 - I prefer to have my bun lightly toasted. Check. #4 - I want to choose what goes on it...I'm just a mustard and onion kind of gal. Check. Well J Dawgs meets all of my requirements. They serve 100% beef hot dogs or Polish dogs. I have never ventured into the land of the Polish, but perhaps I should (after all...I LOVE things spicy). I love that I can watch them cooking my dog right there. Hot dogs that are boiled or steamed are DISGUSTING! The grill is the way to go, and J Dawgs has a huge one. J Dawgs gets their buns fresh from Provo Bakery everyday (at least I read that somewhere). The buns are very yummy and they lightly toast them on the grill. J Dawgs lets you choose exactly what you put on...there is no standard (though they look at you funny if you don't want their special sauce). Like I said, I stick with onions and mustard, but they also have pickle (which my husband loves), sauerkraut, and banana peppers. The mustard and ketchup are self serve so you can go as gentle or as crazy as you want on those. I do enjoy J Dawgs special sauce, but they seriously drench the dog in it if you ask for it. After asking for "light sauce" a couple of times, and having it still drowned, now I just get it on the side and self apply. Much better. The price is very reasonable ($3 per hot dog), and the hot dog itself is a very good size. There are some drawbacks to J Dawgs. The first is Pepsi products. Gross. The second is they have weird chips. My solution? I stop into Sinclair (right across the street) before I head in. Then I can have my hot dog with Coca-Cola and Lays Potato Chips. Yum! read more

This is my favorite dog place in the world. I live in Colorado and come back and eat here every time I come back. I long for a Colorado location. The simplicity of the menu and the greatness of the special sauce are great features. Also, the size of the dogs are enough to fill you up; they are a meal. And the cost is spot on. In a nutshell: tasty and simple, all local ingredients I struggled with the rating on this one. I like this place but I don't love it and was tempted to give it 3 stars to balance things out because I believe BYU students have a way of promoting the not so spectacular. However after reviewing what I DO like about this place vs what I don't care for I had to give it 4 stars. The thing I like about the hot dogs is they are large, and high quality. These aren't your "plump when you cook them" Ball Park franks and they're all beef. I don't think I've tried the Polish dog yet....and I'm not sure why. Get some chips and a drink as well and there is a high likelihood that you'll leave full and satisfied. It says on their website that their hot dogs are made from local beef and the buns are made at a local provo bakery, so you can definitely eat here with the ease of conscience that you are supporting the local economy. That alone pushes my review to 4 stars. You usually have to wait in a line but it moves quickly. I am with one of the other reviewers, I wish there was a little more variety in the toppings, I'm a ketchup, mustard, and relish kind of girl and I've never eaten sliced pickles on my hot dog before j-dawgs The special sauce is worth getting and though I always have twinge of sadness for my missing relish, the hot dog always tastes great anyway. Edit: relish is among the toppings you can get by special request. Hooray! The first time I went, j-dawgs was in the red shack that still stands outside, but they've since moved inside. The change isn't necessarily bad, especially because they're expanding, but its definitely different. Nothing you'll notice if you hadn't been there before they moved inside and nothing you can't fix by taking your food out to eat on the lawn if you REALLY miss it. I do dislike that there is a TV in the restaurant now...TVs in restaurants just bother me because I'm there to be with people and eat food...not watch the game. As someone mentioned, there is a large drink selection which is great and I personally think the apple beer pairs nicely with the j-dawg special sauce. All in all its a good place to eat and beats any hot dog you'll get at home...but I wouldn't say I go out of my way to get one, nor would I say you HAVE to try it; but if your choices while visiting campus are j-dawgs or the cougareat, definitely stop in. read more

J-Dawgs is pretty damn good! I try to eat there every time I am visiting the area. This is no ordinary hot dog, one will likely fill you up. Last time I ate two of them I though I was going to explode! The staff is usually pretty nice and serves your food fast, the place is pretty clean, and now that it's indoors there is no excuse not to go on a snowy day. I recommend getting a polish dog with the house sauce they have, it will knock your socks off. My only complaint about J Dawgs is that it's next to BYU and not U of U. Go Utes! read more

I wasn't excited when a family member recommended a restaurant that only serves hot dogs. Super simple menu like in and out burger. I'm grateful that I still went. I am also grateful that I listened to their recommendations to get the polish dog loaded and with the special sauce and with celery salt (off menu item). The hot dog had a special criss cross cut on top and was huge. Best hog dog ever! I was skeptical of a pickle slice, and everything else on my dog but WOW! Amazing. Fries were seasoned and also delicious. It's a little messy trying to eat this huge hot dog with sticky BBQ sauce on it but they have a fun sink to wash your hands with.
