I came to this restaurant about a month ago, and the food was really good. I had the cajun spiced prime rib which was about 16 bucks and my friend had the NY Strip which was a little more. We started with the Calimari (2nd best part of our meal) and the Crab Queso. The Strip came with a side of macaroni n chz that was abosolutely the best mac n chz I've ever had! I wish it was all I got, I would have been happy with just that. Our server was awesome her name was Monica, she let us know about all of the specials helped us through the wine menu and as a waitress myself, I have nothing negative to say about her which is not common. The one and only complaint I have about the food was that I couldnt believe how HUGE the portions were!LOL. I know this is normally not something you would want to complain about but i don't possibly see how anyone could sit down have two apps, and two entrees and eat it all. and for two or three dollars less they could cut the portions a little and maybe make it easier for regualr people to afford ordering more appetizers when the go there. Absolutely love their food! Every time I come here I have amazing service and the food tastes great. My favorite appetizer is the spinach dip. Amazing. I usually eat here when going out casually. The burgers are not to die for - coming from a burger fanatic. I do enjoy the tenders. Their salads are huge and they always taste fantastic. I always make sure to order fries. They have thin fries made to perfection! On the down side, waiting for a table takes extremely long. Sometimes you wait longer then they tell you also. read more

First, I want to share the fact that I don't post many times on yelp. But when I do, there's a good reason behind. To save you time from reading this post, the short story is that you have to go to this specific location for amazing J Alexander's food. The head chef at this location knows what he/she is doing, everything that we ordered was mouth watering To begin, our waitress was phenomenal. We ordered the shrimp tacos, mahi mahi tuna salad and the shrimp caprese. Everything was incredible, highly recommend the shrimp tacos! Then, we ordered coffee and the carrot cake everyone raves about. To my surprise, the coffee came out in a French press! Those who are coffee drinkers know that coffee from a French press compared to a traditional pot is completely different! The coffee was incredible and the carrot cake was perfect! We went there for dinner on Saturday. The service was great, Christian was our server. The food phenomenal! We had an appetizer of Salon dip and we shared a salad and Prime rib dinner. Everything was so tasty and the prime rib melted in your mouth. We had drinks and they were made perfectly. We felt very pampered and had a great experience. We do go there a couple times a year. I've been to this location specifically 3 times, I've never been to a different J. Alexander's and each time its been a let down. First off, each and every time its like a sauna inside this place - its always been extremely hot the 3 different times I've gone over the past couple years. The first time I went I had heirlooms tomatoes as an appetizer, not very good. The second time I had a basic salad and a steak - again not good at all, borderline a steak similar to something you'd get at an Applebees. Yesterday on Thursday December 19th it was my last and final visit. I went in around 10 minutes after opening at 11:09 AM, I was sat promptly and eventually met the waitress but she was few and far in between the next 1 hour I was there. I had a Diet Coke, my friend had a water and we ordered because we were both extremely hungry. I ordered the rotisserie chicken, it sounded good on the menu and my friend ordered from a specials menu a cod or some fish that came with rice but she substituted it for "smashed potatoes". Once the food finally got to us my meal was two mini rotisserie chickens which were almost fully filled with bones and cold "smashed potatoes". My friend said her fish was warm but not hot and same issue with her smashed potatos (her fish also smelled the way fish shouldn't). Once I took a few bites into my chicken I didn't see blood but it was very pink. It appeared to be undercooked. I waited around for the waitress until I finally asked a random individual for a manager and told her what happened. She offered a replacement and when I said I had to go, it had already been too long she offered something to take home - and this is why it has 2 stars instead of 1, for customer service on the managers part only. She comped the meal (which most places would do) and I appreciate it, she came back with one bill and made my friend pay for my Diet Coke which is unfortunate - I would've preferred to have had that comped or a separate bill for me as well. My friend didn't complain although she probably should have. Her food wasn't good according to her either. I definitely won't be back again after 2 subpar experiences and then my last one yesterday as of writing this review. They still comped my valet parking which was nice. I would say based on the mixed reviews others appear to enjoy this place but I'd prefer Capital Grille next door any day over J. Alexander's. read more

I love J Alexanders! Great steaks, great food, entrée priced (rather than al-la cart, which is about double), and the service and atmosphere is awesome. The Alex's chopped salad is my favorite salad of any restaurant, anywhere, and I've never had a bad meal here, and always had a great time. Good drinks too! read more

I really thought I'd like this place more. The ambiance was mediocre. Certainly nothing to brag about. Although it's not ugly or outdated it's still basic and bland. The staff are friendly and most of them seem to know what they are doing but here's where my complaints begin. We placed our order fairly quickly and had an appetizer as we were quite hungry. Well, it was a bit of a wait. We never saw our server again until the main course came out. The problem is she never brought us our drinks. The other problem is the appetizer came out 2 minutes before the main coarse! As our server showed up I refrained from letting her know I was annoyed our drinks came after I got some other server to remind her of our drinks. Instead I pointed out how ridiculous it was the appetizer came out right before the entrees. Nothing was done. Well fine. With no follow up for more drinks or anything else we decided to wrap it up. That said, the food was very good. Bone-in prime rib was good, sides were very good, Alaskan red fish and drinks were good. The veggie burger was reported to be "blah. Won't get it again." If I'm going to spend this much $$$ again I have a few other way better places in mind. The ONLY justification I have for Alexanders is the convenience of it being in the mall. However, even with a reservation we waited 15+ minutes for our table. That was super annoying. read more

A good place for a fairly quick lunch (or long if you want). Business approrpriate. They have $1 valet... Food is good. There's a little something for everyone. Better than most other "American food" chain restaurants... And not everything is drenched in sugarry glazes like many American food chains serve. I like the tuna burger. Excellent service.. My date and I went here after a horrible experience at P.f. Chang's. Wow what a difference choising fine dining makes. We went 30 min till closing. We literally ran to get there. The staff was amazing. They weren't rushing us anything. My date order ribs n garlic smash. I had a steak burger fries. We shared chicken tenders. An for dessert a piece of heaven carrot cake. My boyfriend and I don't generally frequent Malls or chain restaurants. However, J Alexander's is one of the exceptions. I usually get the prime rib. It's always very good. It has a great flavor and always comes out cooked as ordered. I'm absolutely in love with the Blackberry Volcano Martini. It actually bubbles and smokes like a volcano. It's a very clever presentation for a delicious drink. My boyfriend get the veggie burger, which he says is one of the best he's ever had and I believe him since he usually finishes it before I even get halfway done with mine. Service at J Alexander's is always amazing. An empty plate never stays in front of you for more then a few moments and you never have to wait for a server to greet you. The servers and bartenders work as a team. On one evening somewhere around 10 different servers helped us in one way or another. Whether it was clearing a dish, grabbing a refill, or answering a question. As a former server I'm always impressed with how this place is ran. On another note I once sat at a table where I could see into the kitchen. From what I could see It is spotless and looks like the restaurant just opened yesterday. I was disappointed that they only have three dessert options. I've only tried the Chocolate cake and I was not impressed. honestly box chocolate cake is better. Used to be outstanding, now clearly struggling to keep up with moderate demand. I really hope they don't get as bad as Kona. I hope they are able to get a plan in place and management changed up to focus on the customer. No more slow food and ignored drink orders. This has recently turned into one of my favorite restaurants in Troy. the burgers are simply amazing. I have dined at J's 4 times in the past month, maybe 10 times since November, and I have always left the restaurant satisfied. I feel that the servers are extremely professional, fun, and friendly, and i have enjoyed every visit. I always look forward to Fridays when I get out of work because that's usually the night I stop on in for dinner. My personal favorite choice on the menu is the Pierre Burger, substituting the side of fries with the Orzo and Wild Rice. You might think it's strange to have rice with a burger, but it's absolutely delicious. it's not cheap, nor too expensive, but the taste of the food and experience is priceless. read more

Always a bad experience. We sat down and did not see a waitress for 10min. We finally flagged someone down and ask to please put in the order for our kids food. That food came out in literally 30 seconds, doesn't make sense is it pre cooked? Than when we put in the order for our entrees it took 20 minutes. Again doesn't make sense. When I finally got my burger that I ordered medium well it came out rare. The bun was literally soaked with blood. I sent it back and 10 minutes later they brought me out a burger burnt to a crisp. At that point I gave up and sent it back and left without eating. This kind of thing always happens here and it's a shame bc for the most part the food is actually good. Will NOT return read more

Alexander's on Sweetest Day to enjoy a nice night out for dinner for my wife's birthday it was my kids first time there but me and my wife dined there a few other occasion and enjoyed the food, but this night was terrible the food was late and over cooked the waitress often left and didn't come back and was giving us food to take home from the last party that was seated at our table because there food bag was left at our booth I tried reaching out to the corporate office leaving two messages to the complaint department and no return call the third time I called I spoke with the district manager he said I'm sorry for the bad dining experience you and your family had and said we will send you out a gift card right away it has been three weeks and no gift card It seems as though J.Alexander's customer service is as bad as the service we had that night. read more

Very disappointed in the service yesterday. As always, the waiters try to grab the food off the table all the time you are eating. But this time took the cake. I ate very little of my grilled chicken salad and took it home to finish later in the day. When I opened the box, I had someone else's half of a club sandwich. Thank you waiter, Austin L. Terrible service, terrible management! The food may be good but we never got to dine because the service and management sucked. When we first stepped in after our shopping in the mall they told us it was going to take about 40 minutes and they put our name on the list and told us we will receive a text once our table was ready. We came back 20 minutes later and sat at the bar until they text us. Not only we never received any text but when we expressed our concerns they first said it was not our responsibility to txt you and then one them said she was the manager even though she was not and no one even tried to help. Not to mention 40 min at bar and we had to ask for the drink menu ourselves. The bar tender was too busy with other guests who turned out to be his brother. Hi said a bunch of bullshit to us who have been waiting so long to be asked for some drink or receive the txt. Even after the real manager came to address the situation, she failed to satisfy us. I made two reservations for J. A's - 1 at 2:30 and 1 at 6:30 for 3, on 4 Sept. Wen we arrived at J' A's at approx. 2:15, I had the Hostess cancel the 6:30 reservation. We had a good, but very overpriced meal - at least the fresh salmon for $22.00 - it was no more that 4 or 5 ounces. Then when I arrived back home, I had an email from Open Table chastising me for being a no-show for the 6:30 reservation - this email was sent at 2:31 - 4 hrs before the reservation! I somewhat resent the accusation of being a no-show when I wasn't a no-show. And, with the small portions and over pricing, I'll be considering other fine restaurants in this area. I have always liked J. A's - the service and food were always excellent. I have eaten here dozens of times over the years, but being a senior citizen - and an Air Force veteran - I just can't justify the price-per-portion conflict.
