We were there to celebrate our Sorority Anniversary. Made a reservation via Resy. Promptly seated upon arrival and greeted warmly by the hostesses. The food was absolutely delicious! Ordered the Steak Maui, smashed potatoes, Alex's salad, along with the macaroni and cheese. Too full for dessert! I also enjoyed a Lemon Drop Martini after my meal and LOVED how the extra is put on ice so you can refresh your drink. Expensive, but well worth the cost! Our server was Q. She was amazing and not only made menu recommendations, but she also took a series of photos of us. The restaurant bar area was lively but not overly boisterous. Ambiance is nice with dim lighting. Super clean restrooms and overall spotless. Staff quickly turned over tables and booths and were thorough in cleaning. This was my first time dining at this location. Plenty of well-lit parking and security drives through the parking lot frequently. There's also an entrance from the mall(Somerset). Initially I came in here not knowing what I wanted then saw a pecan crusted fish as a special - and I was sold. They have an off the menu appetizer crab cake, which I thought came with fries but it was paired with a lemony arugula salad. Initially I was fussy - like a kid who was looking forward to French fries for lunch but then, started eating the salad, and it was just too good to stop eating lol. It was a perfect pairing and I'm thankful for the mishap after all. I got the pecan crusted trout and it was excellent. I told the waitress to kiss the chef that seasoned that fish. Coleslaw was good. Very well done dish. And for dessert - I had that Key Lime cheesecake with graham cracker crust. It was extravagant. I went here thinking it would be a high end dining experience. The only thing high end was the prices. The place was so loud it was hard to have a conversation. The crowd was another story. I would have thought that I was at a fast food location based on tank tops, short shorts, ball caps, etc. Service was mediocre at best. Although the steaks were perfectly cooked I thought the Mac and cheese was disgusting but our server never returned to the table for me to say anything until she brought the bill. $47 for NY Strip, even perfectly cooked doesn't justify that price. $41 for Prime Rib is still high. I got the cheeseburger and fries. I added one more Patty for an additional $7 so it was almost a $30 meal. I was expecting a very good burger and it was average at best. There was not much taste to the patties and it was quite dense which is a good thing but not when it was dry like that. The fries were not crispy, were shoe string style. There was nothing fancy about the bun. It was a very ordinary burger that did not impress me. The ambiance when I went in was quite dark with low lighting. Every time in the Troy area, this is a must go to restaurant for me and my friends and family. We try to make reservations as there can be a really long wait on the weekends If you have a larger group, go ahead of time and get your name on the list. Be vigilant because sometime they can skip the order on the list. It's a classier restaurant with dimmed lights. The bar is not super big so it's always packed. There are always wait staff zipping around so be sure to hold onto the little ones and be careful with elders. My go-to's are the seafood dip, sea bass and mashed potatoes, and their drinks. Don't be shy to try different appetizers as those are always good. read more

I've been going to J. Alexander's since high school, and I can honestly say I've never had anything less than an extraordinary experience. The star of the show is, without a doubt, their flame-grilled steaks, the New York Strip is my personal favorite. But the menu has plenty of standouts: the grilled salmon with orzo and wild rice is a close second, and if you're not super hungry, the chicken pasta soup is legit good enough to be a full meal. It's consistently on point. The carrot cake easily one of the best you'll find anywhere. Moist, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. As someone who loves a good drink, J's never lets me down. I especially appreciate how my Bombay Sapphire Slightly Dirty Martini always comes with that extra carafe on the side. After two of those? You might just be calling an Uber home! My favorite location is the one in Troy, but honestly, every J. Alexander's I've been to has been consistently excellent. read more

I haven't been to this location in over a decade. It was a mixed experience. First, the interior could use some updating. My cypress salad was really good; I subbed in grilled chicken instead of the crispy chicken. Service was slow and very hit or miss. There were a total of 4 different people who waited on the table which was so strange and they said the original server was preoccupied. There was an issue with another entree at the table so that person had to order something else, delaying the meal quite a bit. The manager was apologetic and offered a complimentary dessert. Should have just comped that entree. I wouldn't go out of my way to return to this location. Service this mid on a slow Monday is...telling. read more

I had an opportunity to visit J Alexander in Somerset mall. First let me say it was an okay experience. It was a party of five for lunch. The booth was a little tight for two larger men, online reservations only had the option of 4 and comments. The atmosphere was what to expect for a mall restaurant, a lot of in and outs. The service was okay, the waitress relatively attentive when present, but because of the busy time, not as present during the crucial times, after food delivery by support staff. One guest had a hamburger that was overcooked and dry, the other foods were as advertised, just no excellent fare. I do not prefer shoestring fries but they were prepared correctly. The specialty drinks were not important to us. But all in all a nice time and the atmosphere was adequate. Good for a a small group of shoppers who wanted a reliable meal. read more

Our family was there on 4-19-26 to celebrate our daughter's birthday. It is her favorite place. The waitress came promptly to take our drink orders. I asked if they had Killian's or Michelob ultra. She gave me a look like I had asked for some sort of rare beer. I said well what do you have ? With a very obvious attitude she before I even had the question out she said in a terse tone Bud Light. I asked what else, she asked me if I wanted a list, I said sure. Took some time to bring it out and after returning she didn't ask if I decided. So, I settled on water. Don't forget the artichokes! We stopped in for a lunch post pedicures at Nordstrom spa and it was exactly what we wanted. My mother, sister and I shared the wood fired artichokes as an app, always delicious especially with the aioli. For lunch, we all got the steak sandwich on special, absolutely the right move. Here again from California and had to come here to dine. It's located in the mall and there's plenty of parking. We came on a Monday without reservations and there was only a 10 minute wait. I highly recommend this restaurant it's perfect for date nights, girls night out , and even more. It was crowded with a lively crowd and the vibe was amazing. We were seated at a comfy booth and in no time our server Allie arrived. She was super helpful and sweet. We actually came here for the delicious ooey gooey carrot cake. But we ended ordering the Hong Kong chicken, veggie burger, lemonade,and the spicy margarita. Everything was delicious and all in all a great experience as usual. Highlyyyy recommend calling in for a reservation either while you're shopping or just in advance as the wait can sometimes be long. That being said, the service is always superb, the staff are always very nice! Food is always great, the fish is always amazing, otherwise I love their caesar salad as well! Portion sizes are usually big, but the sides are amazing as well! The french fries are a great option for the table. Chain restaurant in metro Detroit area. Large restaurant from a seating capacity perspective with a huge oval shaped bar just to the left of the entry. Not sure what was going on a mid-week day but the bar was packed with every seat taken. The restaurant itself was dimly lite and provided a nice ambiance. We were seated quickly and because my partner was familiar with the menu she quickly ordered the calamari appetizer and suggested a few others but we decided to only ofer the one. The menu itself covered a lot of faire - various seafood, steak, chicken, salad and sandwich options with suggested sides. I ordered the pecan crushed trout which came with cole slaw and my partner ordered swordfish and substituted broccoli and added loaded mashed potatoes to her dish. Both dishes were good but I could have used a bit more seasoning to add some additional flavor. I was told that the chocolate cake and ice cream was really good so we ordered it and it met all expectations, moist and delicious. It was large enough for us to share. We ordered carryouts, paid their stupid packaging fee and two separate orders in a row from them were incorrect. First order, we received a refund for just the missing items but they didn't refund the tip or packaging fee associated with the missing items. Second time, we ordered queso dip and they didn't include the chips. Talked to mgr and she said she would refund me. Then I got a call from the employee who packaged my order and he argued and said he put the chips in my bag but they were not there. We didn't want to go back to the mall to pick up the chips and no refund was ever provided. Very disappointing customer service and we have not gone back since. The least the restaurant could do is double check their carryout orders when they charge an additional fee for takeout orders. read more

Went to eat on a Friday around 5:30 and got seated right away. The waitress was excellent. She was very attentive and kept our glasses full without having to ask for a refill. We ordered the fried shrimp for the appetizer with all of the sauces on the side. For the entree we had crab cakes, Mac and cheese, and broccoli...ribeye steak and mashed potatoes. The crab cakes were full of crab and so delicious. The ribeye was the star of the show!! Seasoned well and was tender. The sides were good too. Everything reheated well the next day. Had dinner with friends on a Wednesday evening, so it wasn't that crowed. We sat right away. Service was good. Waitress regularly checked on us. I ordered the Steak Maui and fries. The fries were crispy but a little thin. The steak was AMAZING. One of the best ribeyes I've ever had. It had a beautiful char and great flavor. It was cooked to perfection. Doubt that i would get anything but the steak on all future visits. Also order the Cesar salad with shrimp. I appreciate that they did not skimp on the shrimp lol. The cocktail was great. By far my favorite steakhouse in Troy, MI. It's centrally located at one of the premier shopping centers and the service is excellent. Dining in is the only way to do it. I went to J Alexander's with my wife. I was so tired just getting off work. I ordered the Bernie's steak fillet when they bring it out they bring me one out and I said where is the rest should be two of them. I looked at my wife and said where is my other one should be a two of them so one of them will just cut in a half so they were trying to cheat me out of one and plus it was so burned up so I asked the waitress go get me two of them that's what should be and when they run it out, it was burned up like a hockey puck. I don't know how J Alexander's will cheat somebody out another one should be two of them. I know they want downhill and I want the owners to find out about this. I am really pissed off at them and I love love this place. I ordered tuna was excellent but the other one terrible service on top of it. When I order the wine they gave me a flat wine. They didn't open it by me, but they opened it somewhere else. I said I want my bottle next to me one is opened. I don't trust anybody that's how I want my bottle so they brought me another one. They apologize for that but with my steak was terrible I don't know how people trying to cheat a person like me. I come all the time at this place since they opened up it's I tell my wife what is going on with J Alexander's. They have some perfect food before now. It turned to garbage on top of it when I ordered my food and everything. I asked her for some bread. I never got the bread after last last minute, we're starving and everything. They don't even serve me anything even my broccoli I ask they didn't give it to me until the last minute. I'm sorry to say that everything came out wrong that day.
