Overall, the food is alright. It is pretty $$$ but they give you large portions. My friends and I were all extremely full and had quite a bit of leftovers. We got the spinach queso and today's appetizer special, fried shrimp with two yummy sauces. I think the apps here are definitely worth it. The spinach queso is extremely delicious and super filling with the chips. It made me not hungry for my entree haha. The fried shrimp and the dipping sauces was a nice crunch and touch. I got the rotisserie chicken for my entree and I personally didn't enjoy it that much because it was pretty dry. I liked that I got a dipping broth to enhance the flavor, but overall not too impressed. The smashed potatoes side was just aight. It was pretty rock solid and bland. Waiter wasn't super attentive to us - the restaurant was also pretty busy - so we were given something we didn't order and had it returned. However, we were still charged for it so he ended us giving us a dessert on the house. We got the carrot cake which was quite tasty but we were much too full. It is expensive, but they give large portions. I just would not recommend the rotisserie chicken entree here. read more

This is a family favorite but this location isn't as great as it used to be. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious and our server was outstanding. But they sat my family in a very high traffic area, right next to the open kitchen so it was super warm and had people walking by us constantly. My salad was amazing though. read more

I went to J Alexander's with my wife. I was so tired just getting off work. I ordered the Bernie's steak fillet when they bring it out they bring me one out and I said where is the rest should be two of them. I looked at my wife and said where is my other one should be a two of them so one of them will just cut in a half so they were trying to cheat me out of one and plus it was so burned up so I asked the waitress go get me two of them that's what should be and when they run it out, it was burned up like a hockey puck. I don't know how J Alexander's will cheat somebody out another one should be two of them. I know they want downhill and I want the owners to find out about this. I am really pissed off at them and I love love this place. I ordered tuna was excellent but the other one terrible service on top of it. When I order the wine they gave me a flat wine. They didn't open it by me, but they opened it somewhere else. I said I want my bottle next to me one is opened. I don't trust anybody that's how I want my bottle so they brought me another one. They apologize for that but with my steak was terrible I don't know how people trying to cheat a person like me. I come all the time at this place since they opened up it's I tell my wife what is going on with J Alexander's. They have some perfect food before now. It turned to garbage on top of it when I ordered my food and everything. I asked her for some bread. I never got the bread after last last minute, we're starving and everything. They don't even serve me anything even my broccoli I ask they didn't give it to me until the last minute. I'm sorry to say that everything came out wrong that day. The calamari was flavorful and came out hot! The deviled eggs were good but the bacon was good but a little too crunchy. Cajun Grilled Artic Char was finally back as a special and was amazing. Moist fish with amazing grilled flavors. Haricots Verts w/ were delicious anThe fish came with a mound of red skin mash and some tomatoes. Initially I liked everything but the tomatoes. I didn't expect them to be cold. Thought they would've been better grilled but tasted it with the fish and it was better. I usually order a Gin and Tonic so I don't like really sweet drinks. I saw a pretty drink and thought I would give it a try. Ordered the Prickly Pear which comes with an additional serving on the side. This drink was sooooo good. The pour was so perfect that I ordered another. Great ambience. 4 stars because this location rarely answers the phone and servers could be a little more attentive. Too expensive for what it is. Got a New York strip. Steak had a line of fat/gristle through it. Potatoes were ice cold. They replaced them with ones that they nuked in the microwave. When McDonald's cooks fresh fries, the don't nuke 'em. Waitress disappeared for long periods of time and she didn't have that many tables, there were quite a few empties Bartender was rude and slow. This is legit my all time favorite restaurant! J Alexander's does not miss, EVER!!!! There Caesar salad is always my favorite thing to get with a ton of black pepper. The spinach quest dip is incredible and so is the emerald cost shrimp. The steak Maui as well is legit one of the best steak preparations I've had in a long time. Their cocktails are very good as well, I always get a pear martini though. I never leave here wanting anything more but another reservation for another date. Great job!!!!! read more

Somerset Mall is just a classy place and J Alexanders shares in that refined look with deep brown wood paneling, fancy lighting, etc. Steak and fries were on point. They were INCREDIBLY rude and frankly quite racist. The server took FOREVER to take my order and instead took other tables orders that came way after me. Then when I did order, the server gave me nothing but attitude and when they walked away, made a comment and how they can't stand black people and how their always in the way. I like this place because it's standard-I feel like you'll always get a decent meal and decent service here. I always get a good burger, good salad, good cheese & chips! It's a great place to grab lunch if you're shopping at the mall. I had the shrimp appetizer. It was ok....but the sauces were delicious! Unfortunately they were NOT able to accommodate which is just wild in today's day.I was offered broccoli, like c'mon who wants a side of broccoli....how can you not have ANY vegan options. And for the chef not to accommodate is just crazy to me. Being vegan is not foreign. One vegan got a salad and it was TERRIBLE as there was NOTHING on it. So disappointing. Yup, still not a fan of this location. My fiance wanted to get a carry out from here because it was close so I hesitantly went along. I ordered the cheeseburger, well-done, with fries and a side of mac and cheese. Pretty straight forward, right? Well, apparently not. My well-done burger was quite the opposite. It was quite pink and made me lose my appetite. I tried to call up to the restaurant and no one answered :-(. Not sure how this happens with a restaurant during prime time dining hours. Luckily, my fiance had ordered a salad, which was large enough for us to share so I didn't go hungry. I ended up putting the patty from the burger into the oven until it was done to my likeness but I'd really prefer not to have to recook my takeout at home. I typically do like J. While visting Detroit, had dinner at this restaurant. It was pretty good! They have a good amount of options to choose from and is an American food restaurant. I ordered a steak and it was good. The restaurant is located in the mall, with an entrance from the outside. So parking is not an issue at all. Inside, there are tons of tables and seating, most likely because it gets pretty full. But even with a larger group, there was not a majorly long wait to be seated. The hostess, servers and stafff were all very friendly and kept up with the orders of all in our party. This restuarant is located inside the Somerset mall and is a huge one too. The seating is nice and spread out so you won't be close to another family. We had a little wait time but it was worth it. Our first time here and we all had a lovely time. The service is excellent.. Appears to be a noisy, raucous place when you first walk in, but the noise level tones down quite a bit after you're seated in the restaurant. The menu selections were limited, but they were of the type that I would expect to be offered at an upscale eatery such as this. The hamburger I ordered was cooked just the way I like it ( medium rare) however I feel like the hamburger in general lacked some flavor. The appetizers were very good, specially their devil eggs. Every time I come to Somerset, this is the only place I will eat, knowing that the staff care and value their customers. It's a week before Christmas and my sister, her kids and I went to J's for lunch. six hours later(watching two kids under 3 can make you very forgetful) my sister realized she forgot her purse at the restaurant. Luckily, Tyler answered the phone a half hour AFTER closing and told us he had the purse in hand, kept it safe and made sure nothing was taken from it as it was returned safely an hour and a half after closing. quality services is hard to come by in the food industry these days and I know J Alexander just guaranteed a valued customer for life. read more

I have to say it has been a long time since I visited J Alexanders. It was certainly nothing that they did wrong. I think that because it is inside the mall is the only reason. Anywho it has been a long time. My boss brought me here for dinner because it was my 17th anniversary working for the company. He comes here quite a bit. One of the things I noticed the right way is that they had remodeled since I have been here. The place looks fantastic. We got seated, and our server Michael was right on time to get our drink orders. I have to say J Alexanders pours a pretty nice drink. I like to get Kettle One on the rocks, and sometimes places will skimp on it. Do a measured pour and charge you ten bucks. I think about what it costs per half-gallon, and I get I am out, and it's convenient. Anywho I am rambling on now. LOL We started with an appetizer of Chips and Queso. It was delicious. For my entrée, I ordered a Filet with loaded baked potato, by the way, was fantastic. I again have to point out that Michael was Johnny on the spot with everything.
