Nice establishment. Definitely has some yummy picks with a nice environment! My family and I ended up going here for a Mother's Day reservation, but it ended up being a bit difficult with the operational side of things. It's always a busy time for establishments, especially when it comes to holidays, but we repeatedly kept getting seated and "unseated" (the hostess would seat us, but then take us back to common area as the tables were either dirty or not ready). I didn't personally care about this, but I definitely noticed my party getting a bit frustrated by the experience as it happened about 4 times before we officially got seated, which also exceeded our initial reservation time. The service itself was okay. I wish they would've come around a bit more as we were out of water while eating our meal, but I know it was super busy that day!! I ended up getting the soft shell crab sandwich and it was pretty good! I think it would be even tastier with more sauce on the bun, but overall a nice pick. Dined here for dinner and I enjoyed it! Arrived 30 minutes early for my reservation and was sat immediately. For appetizer, I ordered Conch fritters. They were perfectly fried and very light density wise. The calypso ranch that came with me was yummy. I ordered a lobster roll with garlic fries and it was good! The fries were super duper garlicky, just a tad too much. Our waitress said they change their menu about every 3 months so we made it just in time. I don't know why it took me so long to try this place -- I've been missing out. The entrance is really cool with its ship-themed design, and we were seated right away. It was a late lunch/early dinner, so the restaurant wasn't crowded, but I was surprised by how big it is inside. Our server was great and helped us pick an appetizer, which ended up being amazing. The escargot is a must-have -- the warm, fresh bread, plus the butter and herbs, made it incredible. We started with two drinks: The B.C. (Gray Whale Gin, Lo-Fi Sweet Vermouth, Select Aperitivo) -- very cool that they carry Select, since I almost never see it anywhere. The Oregon (Ketel One Peach & Orange Blossom Vodka, blueberries, Pinot Noir, lime, simple syrup) -- also really good and a unique mix of flavors. We also tried the Lobster Bisque. It had great flavor, but I do wish they offered some crackers or even a piece of bread with it. For entrees, I had the Connecticut-style Lobster Roll served hot with butter, and it was everything I hoped for. The amount of lobster and all that buttery goodness were perfect -- I'd absolutely get it again. We also ordered the Blackened Salmon BLT, and once again they nailed it with the softest ciabatta bread. It doesn't photograph as well as it tastes, but the sandwich did not disappoint. TLDR: This restaurant offers an alright dining experience, with some highlights and lowlights. The service was commendable, and the atmosphere within the restaurant was lively. For appetizers, I ordered the whitefish paté and 4 oysters, two from the west coast (likely Kumamoto oysters) and 2 from the east coast. I ordered the salmon entreé as the main and a key lime pie for dessert. These dishes varied in their quality, so I will rate them individually below. Whitefish Paté (3/5): To start off, I had the whitefish pate which had come out very quickly. The pate itself paired with the provided saltine crackers were good, but the dish did not stand out in any way. As a result, it was only passable, and I am led to believe there may be other appetizers that are better. Oysters (5/5): The oysters came out afterwards, and they were extremely fresh and delectable. Personally, I am a fan of the more strongly flavored oysters, and the west coast oysters did a great job of satiating my hunger. I would recommend anyone to get the oysters here if they are interested. Salmon Entree (2/5): This was the most disappointing dish of the evening. The first thing that stood out to me was the coloring of the potatoes. One of the potatoes in particular was suspiciously dark, and after eating it, I confirmed that the restaurant had burned the potato. This was not in a charred way that added any flavor either. On top of that, the salmon portion was much smaller than the potatoes combined. I would not get this dish ever again. Key Lime Pie (4/5): The pie was delicious, but the only thing holding it back was the amount of meringue. Had the restaurant reduced the meringue slightly, the dish would have been much easier to finish. Otherwise, the pie had a perfect amount of lime flavor to it, especially with the lime zest added to top. Overall, I would like to come back, despite my ratings. There is a good chance I haven't had the starring dishes, especially since the menu is so vast. read more

We were in the Troy, MI area for a few days. Hungry for seafood we researched great seafood restaurants within about 30 min of our location. Came upon Hazel's in Birmingham MI, looked at the menu, and read the reviews. Decided to call to see if we could get in this evening. What a beautiful, interesting little town! The entry to the restaurant implied that we were in for a unique and fun treat! Casual, inviting, modern atmosphere inside! Little did we know how hard the choices would be, as every menu entry sounded amazing! We decided, for starters, on soup...hubby had tortilla soup. I had likely the best clam chowder I've ever eaten! The seasonings and the flavorful broth loaded with chopped clams were outstanding! We then shared the wedge salad, which the kitchen split and plated for us for no extra charge. You can see by pic how generous each "half" salad was! Hubby had the catch-of-the day, grouper, which he chose to have blackened on cheesy grits with green beans. I had the fish (fresh blackened cod) tacos. They were small street taco size, made and filled perfectly. I could only eat 2 (hubby was happy to oblige eating the 3rd one). The green beans (instead of fries) were seared and seasoned to perfection! The chef-owner has an expert hand at preparing and seasoning her food. I can't recommend this place, even after only one visit, enough! We definitely will go back next time we're up here near Detroit! EXCELLENT! read more

Lobster rolls and oysters! This place was the perfect lunch while we were visiting. The service was so friendly and quick but the speed of everything didn't sacrifice any of the quality. Visited for happy hour on a Tuesday! The service was very prompt and friendly. The food came out very quickly and was hot and fresh. We ordered beer and old fashions from the happy hour menu. Both were great. The also ordered a burger for the happy hour menu this was very tasty but very simple and do not come with a side. The coconut shrimp was not on the happy hour menu, it was VERY good but pricey. The calamari was also not on the happy hour menu and was not very good, chewy and came covered in buffalo sauce and blue cheese which didn't pair right. I was seated immediately and ordered a regular margarita, the Connecticut (hot and butter) lobster roll with onion rings and the whitefish pate for my appetizer which was the only item that was happy hour priced at $7.00. I was tempted to get the clam chowder but they only offered one size and I knew I probably would be full off my dip and roll . My waitress had the sunniest vibe on this overcast day, she was super friendly and attentive. My drink was strong and delicious, I could tell they used actual fruit juices instead of premade mixers. The whitefish dip was small but mighty lol, it was creamy, salty and flavorful in the best way!! I really enjoyed it. My lobster roll was amazing, PACKED with lobster and so buttery, nothing else needed, no notes. I have said I want to try a cold lobster roll with the mayo, but the warm butter calls my name every time....maybe next time lol! The onion rings were the perfect pairing, fried perfectly. We chose from 3 types of EC and we settled on 2/3 and order two more dozen. Yes two more dozen. We had the fish patte for the app, perfection, fresh cracker and not oversaturated with mayo it was great texture and taste. Loved it would order again. Drinks were dirty martini blue cheese olives. Good the first one was better than the second one maybe different bar tenders. Also had the coconut tequila drink I think the Alaska reminded me of summer and the beach. Refreshing. I will be back as I know the menu changes seasonally. I went during crab season and I was not really impressed with the "crab a ganza" not much crab for the money. Mostly mussels, green beans and potato and some of the mussels were empty. Our server was polite but we didn't get very much check ins. Our glasses were empty for the most part. Had the best time at Hazel's for Sunday brunch! After finding parking along the street nearby we entered through the nautical themed entrance. Although there was high and low topped table seating all around we opted for seats at the bar where we could take in the upbeat banter and good energy all around. The bartender was fun and gave great suggestions on drink variations and food recommendations. We chose the crab cake appetizer which was made with Maryland blue crabs and was some of the best crab cakes I've had in Michigan. We then ordered salads topped with blackened shrimp and it was another win. If you're looking for a little different menu selection for Sunday brunch, then you will want to try Hazel's. My family came here for an early Mother's Day celebration and we left so happy from the great food and service! Our server Matthew was attentive with our waters and orders and the food came out quicker than fast food places while being fresh and delicious! The portions here are also large so you will not leave hungry. It's also a large open space inside that is great for groups. Appetizers: Calamari and hot crab dip - delicious! Loved the chili aioli that came with the calamari. The bread that came with the piping hot crab dip was also super soft in the inside and crispy on the outside. Soups: Lobster bisque - lots of lobster pieces. Half and half (lobster bisque and cream of crab) - we thought it was separate portions of each but it was mixed together which was a surprise but was still good. The cream of crab added creaminess to the lobster bisque and made it less acidic. Mains: Warm lobster roll - large chunks of lobster on a perfectly buttered bun. Soft shell crab sandwich - large sized crab on a soft bun. Sides: We upgraded the fries that came with our lobster rolls to garlic fries and hush puppies which were very worth it! Hush puppies had some scallion inside with soft butter on the side and the garlic fries had a good amount of garlic/parmesan/butter topping. The flash fried soft shell crab appetizer was also very good and came with a savory, slightly spicy remoulade dipping sauce. They are well known for their lobster rolls which you can order Connecticut (hot with butter) or Maine style (warm with mayo). We got Connecticut style. The brioche style bun with butter was a bit rich for our personal taste but the lobster was fresh and delicious. I ordered the seafood boil bag, which came with a huge bucket of legs at a great price. It was a bit cold and overcooked, and I had to ask for crackers and melted butter since my server was busy. The whitefish itself was not worth the price and I am glad I did not get it at full price. It wasn't bad, just not amazing in my opinion. After looking through the menu, and looking at what everyone got, I decided on the lobster roll. This did not impress me as well. It is 5-6 oz of lobster, pure lobster. I got it hot, with melted butter and some cajun seasoning. The lobster itself was cooked but it lacked flavor. Bun + lobster. That's it. I didn't know I had to add A LOT of seasoning and butter for there to be some flavor which did not make me feel particularly good about myself. It is a small sandwich, the promised 5-6 oz of lobster, but not worth $33 in my opinion. Service was stellar. Our kid, who usually watches iPad/phone was well entertained by our waiter and the coloring materials available. Service was quick and frequent and amicable. The menu was explained well.
