5/16/25 I came here with the in-laws, Zach and his brother and wife for a 5PM reservation. They were just opening up, but they let us sit at the bar while they got the restaurant ready for dinner. We all got drinks at the bar. I got The Final Rose drink. its's very pretty and not too strong. After sipping on the drinks, the host brought us to our table. Chris was our server that day. He was super friendly and answered all of our questions regarding the menu. Here's what we got: - Michigan lamb ragu (his) - Lobster and shrimp pad thai (mine) - Crab and shrimp cakes (share) - clam chowder (share) His family got some of the same items, but I can't remember the different items they got. The overall consensus though was that everything tasted fantastic. Coming from the Bay Area, I have high expectations when it comes to Asian food, so I was pleasantly surprised by how great the pad thai tasted. The clam chowder was creamy and delightful. The crab cakes were the perfect size and not teeny tiny. The lamb ragu was very well done also and my husband is a big fan of lamb so he really enjoyed his meal. Since we were there early, it was quiet which was nice. Would definitely return in the future the next time I am in Michigan. read more

Alchemi - or Alchemy - is the historical practice of turning base metals into gold thus creating an elixir for life - I wish I could say I left feeling rejuvenated- but left a bit disappointed First the good, really good, and the ok...the steak is AMAZEballs...I will come back for that again...the shrimp/crab cakes and ribs, also awesome - the Gouda app is good, as is the pork pasta - the tiki masala was ok Now the way the evening ended which was unfortunate considering the food - we ordered a bottle of wine that they didn't have - then the chef brought us out another bottle, but from a different region of France - but then got the bill and was charged for the higher end wine @ 140 bucks a bottle - when I said this was wrong they removed one of the bottles from the bill but we still paid 140 for 2 bottles which was still higher then it was supposed to be - I get restaurant mark ups, but this bottle retails for 30 bucks, so 70 is absurd. The server was very nice, but said the chef had gone home so there was no way to verify correct price. Weird... So tough way to end a great meal, we should have asked about the price initially so that ones in us, and they did offer us a dessert/coffee if we wanted. I wasn't having a good day physically and so I was a little more picky about how I want my food prepared however they accommodated me in every way they accommodating me with less spices and changing the vegetables it was much appreciated. The service was excellent. It lobster bisque is not my favorite ..The atmosphere was really nice. Very nice and intimate experience for a Saturday night. Street parking was easy to find. As soon as you walk in, there are freshly grown plants and garnish used in dishes. We had reservations but shockingly it wasn't crazy crowded. Our waiter was polite but unfortunately they all looked short staffed and tired. Our appetizers and entrees were really delightful. First time coming to Alchemi last Saturday night and had a reservation at 7:30pm. Took a few minutes to be greeted by the host but was quickly seated. Unfortunately our waiter took a bit to greet us but did take our drink orders. I'm not sure if they were short-staffed or what happened this evening but pretty much everything we ordered took forever to get to us which is the reason for losing a star on the rating. I don't believe it was our waiters fault as all the drinks were fresh and the food was hot when it arrived. Aside from that issue, everything we tasted at Alchemi was phenomenal. We started out with a few cocktails and the crab and shrimp cakes and immediately knew this was going to be a delicious evening. The cakes were so soft and melt-in-your-mouth flavorful! We ordered the salmon and NY strip for our entrees and were pleasantly surprised at just how amazing they were! The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned and had just a hint of spice. It was wonderful! I had the NY strip and I have to say it was definitely up there in the top steaks I've had at a restaurant. The crust on the steak was amazing but perfectly cooked medium rare inside....and the chimichurri!!! To. Die. For. The smashed potatoes were also mouth-watering! The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of were the veggies but that absolutely did not matter lol Last, we had the crème brûlée which had a perfect crust to crack and was delightful! Overall highly recommend. The restaurant was small but mighty with its dark atmosphere. Nice music that isn't too loud and very sweet staff. When we tried to order the French press coffee, our waiter wouldn't let us because they ran out of the beans and the press they ordered was not the right one. He flat out said, "no," when we ordered but then proceeded to explain he couldn't in good conscience charge us for that when all they had was Folgers! Good man :) read more

The only reason I gave a 4 star instead of 5 is because when we arrived for our 6:30 reservation, there was no hostess in front so we waited for a few minutes unsure if we were in the right place. Then the executive chef saunters over and asked if he could help, well okay! We were promptly seated in a quiet booth in the back and then a very friendly server came by with menus. We started with cocktails and we were very impressed with the Smokey old fashioned! If you like bourbon this is a must try! We shared the focaccia fromagi small plate, then a small farmer salad and then we shared the lamb ragu. All very tasty. We decided to finish with the apple streusel cheesecake and decaf coffee. The cheesecake okay but the coffee was fresh French pressed. We will definitely be back! Maybe next time we'll sit at the bar! read more

Thank you alchemy for a beautiful dinner and night out for my lovely wife and I. Sabrina was our server and she was absolutely fantastic. She was smart funny and had us laughing all night. As far as the food goes if I could give it six stars I would. We had the stuffed dates and then we shared the lamb chops, which were cooked to perfection. My wife ordered the lobster and shrimp pad Thai, which we had to take home because we were having such a fun time drinking wine and enjoying the atmosphere. I really wanted to like this restaurant but have to give it the thumbs down. Over priced and underwhelmed. The ambience struck me more like a gothic them which I was not into. The waitress said that they were a farm to table and that 90% of what they served came from places within 90 miles of the restaurant. That does not justify the over inflated prices. The food was okay. Service left a lot to be desired. I came with my fiancé and my future mother in law and our waiter had no interest at all in my opinion or ensuring that I had a good meal, since he concluded that I would not be the one paying for the meal. There was an attitude to his demeanor that I absolutely did not care for, and my fiancé also picked up on this and felt it was a bit off-putting. The bacon-wrapped date appetizer was too sweet; using a tangier cheese, like a goat cheese, would have made it a lot better. The steak I had was decent, but not cooked the way I ordered it, medium rare. In fact, it was more on the side of medium well, despite the waiter complimenting my mother-in-law's choice of ordering hers rare. The steak itself could have been seasoned better but the chimichurri was nice and the potatoes on the side were tasty. We shared the creme brûlée at the end of our meal, which I believe was billed as something cherry flavored or cherry liquor, I can't remember exactly now, but it barely registered as whatever the flavor was supposed to be. It was a rather mediocre creme brûlée texturally and the composition could have been better. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant wasn't especially busy but we were given a table in the middle of the room, despite having a reservation. For the price, the meal left a lot to be desired. Perhaps we'll give the brunch menu a try one of these days, but we are not in a hurry to return for dinner anytime soon. read more

I would consider this more a place for drinks than food. We got the fancy cheese dip and Thai street ribs for starters. The cheese was too fancy and kinda bland. But the ribs were excellent. All their craft cocktails tasted fresh and each one was worth trying. Dwight's temptation was by far my favorite. For main courses, I got the wagyu beef strudel. It's delicious! The other dishes on the table were the lobster shrimp pad Thai- very plain, lamb ragu- absolutely no flavor, not sure what happened here, and the chicken tikka- the rice it comes with was without any seasoning but the chicken tikka and the flatbread it came with were very good. And I can't leave this review without telling you how amazing the crème brûlée was; I can't do it justice, just get it. It's exquisite. 4.5/5 so I'll round up to 5 stars. Alchemi had been on my list to try for a while, and I found myself in Royal Oak on a Friday night. I had checked earlier in the day and surprisingly they had a ton of reservations slots still open, so I snagged a 7pm one. I think we arrived maybe 15 minutes early and they were still able to seat us. I had a rum drink which was very good, it kind of tasted like orange juice. My boyfriend had the smoked Old Fashioned and was very impressed by it. We started off with the Thai spare ribs and these were also very good, albeit a bit pricey. I had the chimichurri steak for my meal and my boyfriend had the salmon with curry sauce; mine was excellent and he said his was really good too. He also had the Corpse Reviver drink, which had really cool presentation, and the Madagascar Express martini. For dessert we shared the cherry creme brulee which was also delicious. The only reason Alchemi gets 4.5 from me and not 5 is because our waiter got very busy with other tables, and water refills became a little more scarce, about halfway to three-quarters into the meal. This is the former Mr. B's location, also, and I was impressed with the way they renovated it. I'll definitely be back at some point, as all of the food was great. read more

The food was amazing had the Thai street ribs as an appetizer, salad and for Entree the Wagyu Beef Strudel husband had the Lobster and Shrimp Pad Thai, Chefs kiss. Oh and Drinks A+. Service was just was amazing. I wish I knew our servers name he had a black fedora with long feathers. He really took care of us. Then to top it off the chef came out to greet us. Great Sweetest day! The establishment was really beautiful! The service A1, the food was really good accept the seafood dish, it was bland had zero flavor. I suggest adding some pizzazz aka seasoning to the dish, bring it to life. The owner is involved and introduces himself which I really appreciated. Downstairs is the entertainment. read more

This is the 2nd time I've been here. The food is excellent and imaginative. The farmers salad was excellent. So were the crab and shrimp cakes. I would have been happy with an entree size of them! The rib appetizer was good. For my main I got the wagyu beef strudel which was good. I love the ambience of the restaurant. The only thing I have a complaint about is the drink prices. $17 for a very small drink (yes it looks pretty but 4 sips later its done). read more

Stopped in to Alchemi for a late evening date night! I would definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for inventive cocktails. This was the first time I've gone to a place and actually enjoyed a signature whiskey drink so that's saying something. The food was alright- not my personal favorite but I did love the appetizers. This might be a better spot for drinks and a few small bites v a sit down meal. I did love the gruyere appetizer with toasted bread though. The inside of the restaurant is sooo beautiful! The staff is beyond welcoming and friendly! Hunter was always making sure we had what we wanted and needed and gave us great recommendations too! Chef Johnny is so talented and even walked table to table to ask how everything tasted! The chimichurri on the strip was the best I've ever tasted! Everything is farm to table too which we love! Ordered takeout online (prepaid and tip). Apparently their system wasn't printing... so I arrived and nothing was done/ready. Then the disorganization became apparent. Five different people ended up coming up to ask if I had a reservation or wanted a table. The rotating folks at the front came and went. Some apologized but I watched as there were several periods of about 5 minutes when nobody was up front and those that came in were just left waiting. Ultimately the food was ok. Full disclosure, I made reservations for Johnny's Speakeasy and ended up at Alchemi by accident. They share the same address and we somehow didn't get that we were in the wrong restaurant. Anyways, it was my bf's 60th bday and I wanted to take him somewhere nice. Luckily this worked out for us. It was a Thursday night so the place was only about 20% full, not sure what it's like on the weekends. After checking out the menu and asking a few questions the waitress told us the 3 course Wagyu meal was enough to split between us. We did that and added an order of the medjool dates. We got Thai Street ribs, side salad & Wagyu beef strudel. We enjoyed everything, but nothing was exceptional. The salad was really nice with lots of items on it and we really liked the dressing. The Wagyu strudel was good but tasted like basic roast beef rolled up in puff pastry. I was hoping for something more exciting. Service was generally good - but our waitress didn't get back to us in a timely manner between courses leaving us without silverware at one point and no plates to put our food on. We asked for a few things and she said ok, then we watched her stop off at other tables and basically forget about us, then we'd have to flag her down again. I got the mother of dragon drink. Tasty but Small and Expensive! I followed that up with a red wine. Bf got a bourbon. So good meal, we're happy we went, but will look for other places for our next celebration. read more

My friends suggested taking me to Alchemi for an early birthday dinner and I loved it! We made a reservation, which I'd highly recommend because it was packed. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer but she was clearly overworked - they didn't appear to have enough wait staff for the night (which I recognize is a problem pretty much everywhere right now). But once we did finally get our drinks and food, we really enjoyed everything. The cocktails are overpriced by about $3-4 but they were fun to try - the first one I got was called Peaky Blinders and they light the marshmallows on fire at the table, which was a nice touch. For food, we started with the Cevapi and Chevre Stuffed Dates, which were both delicious. I got the Chu Chee Salmon for my entree and couldn't have been happier. It was cooked perfectly, and the coconut curry sauce with the apple slaw and saffron rice were just *Mwah! Chef's kiss*. And speaking of chefs, Johnny even stopped by our table to ask how our meal was, which I thought was very classy. To top it all off, they brought out a complimentary creme brulee with a huge sparkler for my birthday. All in all, we had a great time at Alchemi. read more

Came last week with some friends! I got the lamb chops which were okay. They were cooked well and the potatoes were good but the sauce was very sweet. The menu also had it listed served with pasta not potatoes and it only came with 3 Brussels sprouts and 2 small pieces of carrots so more veggies would of been better. This place definitely has some highs and lows for sure. Some of my concerns are the kitchen and lighting is visible and too bright. The trendy speak easy downstairs has the exact same menu for drinks and food which is a little disappointing. Some of the sauces are pretty sweet for the dishes. The service was a little slow. Some of the highlights are the cocktails but even they were not consistent in color and flavor which makes ordering a second a gamble. The cocktail we all liked the best was the final rose but it comes in a goofy flower pot with Oreo crumbles and a flower. The drink flavors are balanced and sophisticated and the decor looks like a child's birthday dirt cake. Went here since they take reservations - that's getting to be the top way I pick restaurants in this post-pandemic world. Food was pretty good. We ordered the Gruyere Cheese bread which was surprisingly good. I had the lamb ragu which I highly recommend. The addition of toasted pine nuts gave the dish a little more texture than normal which I liked. My wife got the Pad Thai which had a very strange siracha-based sauce on it that dominated the dish. Not recommended unless that's your thing. Service was friendly but spotty. We were sitting outside at the table farthest from the door and our waiter seemed to forget about us most of the time. read more

Went tonight for a date night at 8 PM and we were really looking forward to several dishes/drinks and were excited! Got there on time for our reservation, waited about 5-10 min without being greeted, no big deal, sat down and were greeted and given water. I asked a question about some drink ingredients and our server had no idea... no big deal again. Put in our small plate order, asked a question a dish, no idea- oh well, still fine. One hour later still waiting. No one came over or looked in our direction. There were a couple servers, bar tenders, and the chef walking around. We couldn't even catch anyone's eye despite being pretty much centrally located. Finally our server stopped by. We asked if we could order entrees as it had been over an hour. She took our order. Did not say anything about the apps/salad, give an eta, nor apology. Another 15 min later (and almost 1.5 hours after the start of our reservation time) we were so hungry. We put down cash to cover our drinks and left. I put on my coat somewhat slowly hoping someone would notice us or say your food is on the way. Not a word. At that point the restaurant was about 1/3 full. So we left disappointed. Grabbed a quick bite elsewhere and went home. The menu looked great. Definitely a bummer! It's just crazy that after ordering a salad and small plate at 8:10 we still had no word or explanation by 9:25. Just speculation but the booth next to us looked pretty irritated too.
