It pains me to write this review because I really wanted to love this place. We love the sister restaurant, Bar Pigalle, and were hoping for much the same. First, the good... We LOVED the cocktails. They were big, strong, fascinating, unique and delicious. Very reasonably priced for what you get. I would rate these as my #1 cocktail of the year so far. We had 3-4 different ones over the course of the night, all great. Next to the apps. We ordered the cheese board, and were disappointed to be served what looked like scraps of cheese kind of sloppily thrown on a board with some crackers and jam. Humboldt Fog is a completely unique concoction with a blue line of ash through the middle, ash on the outside and the cheese kind of getting softer on the edges from interacting with the ash, and age. It is beautiful to look at, but needs to be served in a way where all of that is visible. Our portion looked like somebody scooped it out of a wheel and kind of smeared it on the board. Just random chunks and pieces. The other cheeses were fine, but not exactly presented in a great way. Bread was good, the onion butter was interesting, though not to everybody's taste. But for a $10 bread app, just kind of expected more here. Entrees. Burger was 10/10. Delicious. Fries are an extra $9. Seems like an $17 burger needs something with it. But it was great. Thai grilled shrimp were delicious, with a delicious creamy red curry sauce. The other stuff (melon, cucumber, basil, mint) didn't really seem to be very present, and the entree contains only 3 shrimp, a fact that our waiter helpfully warned us about. For a $40 entree with pretty much only shrimp and sauce, that is $13.33 per shrimp, but who is counting! Yummy, but definitely felt a bit taken here. NY Strip. An average NY strip with an average Au Poivre sauce. Not even a discernible hint of the promised Szechuan pepper. Everybody tried the sauce trying to find it, nobody did. Steakhouse pricing without the Steakhouse. SIdes: Antipasti: Inedible. Looked bad, tasted bad, nobody could figure out what they were trying to do. We hated them. $17 Smashed potatoes: Everybody disliked these as well. Nobody could really figure out what they were supposed to be, but what they came out as were kind of lukewarm and flavor-challenged with no really identifiable bacon or cheddar or scallions. The cheddar seemed to be Kraft dinner powdered cheese. They were weird. Hated these too. $14 Mac & Cheese: This was good though not $17 worth of good. Then the power went out. We had all of our food and you could see, so no problem for us. It had the potential to be kind of fun, and we seemed to be at the end of the night, so no worries there. But the staff kind of got annoyed, our waiter (who we liked) disappeared and we were not offered anything else, no drinks, water, dessert. I realize that it is a giant PAIN IN THE ASS to close a restaurant with no power, but that is not the fault of your customers who just happened to be there when the power failed. At least make an effort to try to be hospitable. At the end of the night, we felt that the drinks were GREAT, some of the food was really good, and a lot of it just missed. Did we hit a bad night? New cooks? Order the wrong things? Not sure. Just felt that they were really pushing it on the value/pricing scale. and for the $400 we spent for 4 people with a (big) tip I just expect something a bit greater than what we got. Need reservations for this Saturday night. We are seated at the bar. The bar is the best service, more often than not. Our bartender made sure our counter was always cleared off, replaced wares and side plates for each dish. Keeps a clean area for us. Ordered a bunch of items to share: baked oysters, cheese board, smoked whitefish dip, summer salad, Mac & Cheese and roasts chicken and s'mores. $157.94 The cheese board was good, we both liked the blue cheese the best, the fig is always a plus. The baked oysters is okay. The whitefish dip and yummy. Has dollops of hot sauce, like the baked capers. Mac & cheese was okay, shells were mushy, the cheese reminded me beer cheese to me. Went on a Sunday night, took a moment to get a table cleared and it was worth it. Didnt have the oysters so got the bread and the cheese plate. It was so yummy. Giardinaro butter? Yes please!!! Tasty cheese offerings!! Again, yes chef! Had the "cracked rice" and shrimp, it was delivered as the shrimp and grits- still excellent, even with the name change. My companion had the burger, let's just say he devoured it. Pleasant atmosphere, not a lot of parking. A bit pinky up and not in an overly pretentious way. Tip #1- make a reservation! It was so incredibly busy on a Thursday night. Every seat was full at the bar for walk ins. We did have a 730pm reso and arrived at 710pm. Luckily we were sat at 720pm because we were quite hungry. Tip #2- it is very loud in here. It was quite difficult to hear anything our server said so if you are hearing impaired it may be better to choose a less "prime" time to go. The Beverly would benefit from some sound dampening. Appetizers- We ordered the bread board, golden beets and smoked chicken wings. Bread board- deliciously crusty focaccia with a giardiniera butter. This was a good bread, but not too memorable. Golden beets- a must order if you love beets and a really good way to try a beet if you don't! Absolutely delicious. I'd go back a thousand times for this. Smoked chicken wings- my husband said these were the best dry rub chicken wings he has ever had (I argue they are tied #1 with the dry rub wings at OWL). A must. *** Side note- we were incorrectly given the heirloom carrots. We immediately let the server know we ordered the beets not the carrots and she left these at the table. We did try one each and they were quite bland. A bit disappointing that it was kept on our bill considering we did not order this. Every time a dish has been incorrectly placed at our table before, it is comped as it was not part of the order. Could have been overlooked as they were busy, but still disappointing. We did not bother asking her about this when we received the bill so the fault is on us as well. Entrees- Lamb saddle chop- the beans!! So huge and so delicious. It was cooked perfectly medium rare and on the bone so a lot of flavor. Pigalle burger- when we ordered the server asked if we wanted a single or double patty so I asked if it was a smash burger and she said yes so we ordered a double. It is NOT a smash burger. The burger patty was ~1/2" so this ended up being a very large burger. I would've preferred a single but order a double if you have a large appetite! This burger was AMAZING. Made it into The Beverly during its first official night open, and was very impressed by how well-run the place is despite being so new. The staff was friendly and helpful, and though at times it took a bit for them to come back, it wasn't excessive and was better-than-expected for the first official night open. Food was very good. I split the Pigalle Burger (delicious, just as it is at Bar Pigalle), crudo, fries, and some deconstructed chicken pot pie (forgot the name of the dish) and all were yummy. Cocktails were good, though I wouldn't say great. My slight nitpick is the wine was being stored and served too warm (we ordered a bottle that they just grabbed from a shelf in the dining room), but to their credit, one of their staff members (Ivan) brought us a chiller, which made the wine taste much better later. All in, a very welcome addition to the upscale casual dining scene in the area, and I'll definitely be back! read more

The Beverly is beautiful, but the food and service still need some work. The decor is lovely, but not pretentious. The right lighting, music, and noise levels. The interior is fairly large, and the tables are reasonably spaced. The menu is short, and appears to change often. It does seem to have some identity confusion. Half of the plates are upscale comfort food, burgers, mac and cheese, and half is high end seafood. I thought the wine list and cocktails were better curated. The meal was inconsistent. We started with the beet salad, which was very good, but the ingredient ratio was off and it did feel like a plate of beets. We liked the side of mac and cheese, and it was a good portion. The halibut was fine, it was cooked correctly, but overall it was a bit bland. My friend had the grilled shrimp, and shrimp I tried was probably the best of the meal. I could not eat the rest as it was in a red pepper sauce, and I'm allergic. The Beverly manages to hit all of my annoyances with a high end restaurant. The first being listing some of the ingredients, but leaving off major components. (If the sauce is made of red paper, and you are listing ingredients it should be included, are you being charged per letter to print the menu?) The menu is à la carte, which means they charge full price for a main and you have to separately pay for sides. (A $17 burger comes as only the burger, want fries? That's an extra $9). Their veggie sides are also at a high price point. My last annoyance is having to beg for the bill. The service was not impressive and very slow. It took too long for everything, including drinks, except the salad, and we waited, and waited for the bill. As a side note to patrons, this is not a restaurant that is young child friendly, your toddler probably will not enjoy it. The Beverly is still quite new, I would be willing to return after they've had some time to work out the service. read more

Great new addition in Berkley, located right across from the library. The parking is limited, but street parking is free. Inside the decor is clean with whites and blues. Gives the vibe of a summer cottage. The tables are a bit too close as the space is not large. We were seated in a corner window booth and the abundant light at sunset was lovely. Our server came over right away and was friendly and happy to answer questions. She was attentive and came back regularlyto check that everythingwas ok. Overall I'm happy with the service we received. The food menu is one page, not a large variety of dishes. My friends and I ordered a Pigalle Burger each, and a few sides to share. All the food was beautifully plated and presented. The burgers were delicious, juicy and flavorful. The grilled mushrooms over a chickpea base were quite good with an earthy slightly sweet flavor. The carrots were just ok, but the sauce that they came with, combination of a white sauce and chili sauce, saved the dish. The beets were bland for my taste. For dessert we tried the olive oil cake served with whipped ricotta and orange jam and the passionfruit chocolate sorbet. Both desserts were flavorful in the best way. The cake was sweet but the ricotta and tangy orange balanced it out. The combination of passionfruit and chocolate was as surprising as it sounds but it works. It's on the sour side and refreshing. We went for brunch to celebrate a birthday and they miss the mark on a few things. There were 6 of us and it took an extremely long time to get our drinks. Also I did not enjoy their spin on a bloody mary it was watery and not very big. Our service was ok but not a very personable experience. It is nicely decorated inside, I love the mosaic tiles. To eat, I decided to try the chicken and biscuits with a spicy syrup. The chicken was perfectly crispy but the biscuits were not so great. I have had better from a box, they were just bland. The syrup was very good with the chicken with a sweet heat combination. The sourdough waffle was also kind of bland and boring. We also had to ask for syrup which I think it should be served with it and not something we have to request. The burger did look very good for what that's worth. read more

Tried this newer restaurant for a work meal. We had a reservation and the place was fairly full. It is a chic place that you wouldn't expect to find on a corner in Berkley! The restaurant featured both small plates and regular meals. We tried: bread plate, beet salad, mushrooms, chicken wings, the half chicken dinner and the Thursday pork special. Everything had a unique twist and came out delicious. The spices on the wings made those stand out as well as the nuts and grapefruit in the beet salad. The servers were helpful with recommendations and attentive (since we ordered so much food they needed to clear the table for our main courses). The main courses varied in size (pork was huge, chicken was small for being a 1/2 chicken), so ask for advice if you are only ordering 1 item. read more

Beverly is a modestly set restaurant that, from the outside, doesn't catch your eye--just a simple exterior. Inside, the vibe is also pretty plain--nothing really stands out. However, the food was a pleasant surprise. The burgers, in particular, stole the show--juicy and flavorful, a real highlight. We started with a few appetizers: the mushrooms were absolutely excellent, while the carrots were just okay, and the beet appetizer fell in the middle--mediocre, at best. For dessert, we had the ricotta olive oil cake, which I found a touch too sweet, though my friends loved it. The passion fruit chocolate sorbet, though, was a standout--bringing a tangy twist to chocolate. Overall, Beverly was above average. I'd come back, though I do hope the service improves--our server was pleasant, but she was slow to bring items, forgot our lemon, and only checked in with us few times at the very end. read more

4.5 stars! I finally got to try The Beverly in Berkley yesterday. On Wednesday nights they have a 1/2 fried chicken dinner special. OMG, I think this is the best fried chicken I have ever had! Even when I was full, I couldn't stop picking at the chicken and or the skin because it was so good! What I had... Drink: Teacher's Pet: Lunazul Blanco, Madarin Napolean, Lemon, Spiced Apple Tea Delicious! Not overly sweet, although I love sweet drinks. Main: 1/2 Fried Chicken with house pickles and cheddar biscuits. The biscuits were the only part of the meal that I didn't absolutely love and I think it's because they were served cold. When I eat cheddar biscuits (and I think we all know where I'm usually eating them), they're served warm. I wanted these to be more like that I guess? I ended up bringing them home so I can warm them up to see if I'm right. I don't know what the sauce was made of, but it was both sweet and spicy and I absolutely loved it! Side: Smashed Potato: charred onion relish & mustard. I think I was expecting more of a mashed potato, but these were roasted, smashed potatoes. They were still excellent! Nice and crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Perfect. Dessert: S'Mores: dark chocolate cremeux, graham tuile, and toasted meringue. VERY sweet, which I normally love, but a hair too sweet even for me. I think if the tuile had not also been sweet, it would have helped. Our first visit to the Beverly. Very excited to go as we are HUGE fans of Bar Pigalle in Detroit. This can't take its place, but we live in the suburbs, so sometimes we just don't want to go all the way downtown for a great meal. Location is nice, but very limited parking, & they were hopping already at 5:30 on a Wednesday. There is a free public parking lot nearby & that is where we parked, as the area close to the restaurant was already full. Inside is very cute, the bar area looks great, with shelves on the side windows. Room at the front is brighter, especially since it faces west at sunset. There's a room in the middle that looks darker, more moody---that's where I want to land next time, or the bar (is it walk in only? I don't know). We had cocktails that we were very pleased with. Oysters, bread & salad all landed at the exact same moment, which would not be our preference. Oysters first, please, then bread & salad. Our server was quite young & possibly not very experienced, she frequently wanted to take things away when we weren't ready, but was polite. Very noisy interior, our server was quite soft spoken & we frequently had trouble hearing what she was saying. Tables are mostly pretty close together. Maybe add some sound deadening tiles over head? Conversation is quite difficult. We shared oysters, the bread (ciabatta & a jardiniere butter, super delicious!) & the radicchio salad, which was very very good. Then we shared the mushrooms & the trout. Both were fantastic. The mushrooms had a very lemony flavor over some hummus. We'd get all these things again! I'd go 5 stars if our server was the caliber of Bar Pigalle--they really make the experience top notch. Definitely highly recommend the Beverly, but also go to Bar Pigalle. read more

Our party of four came in wanting a nice spot to catch up over dinner and drinks. The ambiance was really enjoyable. It was clean and modern and the bar area has great light. We were in the dining room which was a little more dimly lit. We moved on to ordering apps and entrees and that's where the waiting began. We arrived for our 545 res on time. After having received a follow-up text stating that parties of 4 or less had a block of an hour and 45 minutes to dine I wasn't sure how that worked with the kitchen being so slow to get us apps and entrees. My takeaway was that as long as we were ordering more food it was a moot point. That said, we did wait a short eternity for our food but the bar was fortunately more timely turning around orders to keep the table well managed. The food was so so. The lamb shank was the clear winner for the evening. The whitefish dip was pretty good and the fried chicken was OK but we'd pass on the oysters on the half shell next time...they were really small and unsatisfying. All in all it was a pricey night for food that was good but not extraordinary. Service was excellent though and the bar is competent. read more

Wow! This place was amazing! The service was what truly set our dining experience apart from other fine dining adventures we have had, and trust us, we have had many! The Beverly is owned by the same owners as Bar Pigalle. Since going to New Orleans I have grown to love French food. I still have not been to Bar Pigalle so I was super excited to try The Beverly. This is a beautiful, light and airy restaurant with a large bar. We had reservations but were able to sit at the bar, which is our preferred spot. Everyone staff member treated us wonderfully. You really got the feeling like you were the most important person there despite it being quite busy. We were unsure what we wanted cocktail wise so the bartender made us a special drink made with absinthe that he made up and a got a NY sour. I adore NY Sours and haven't had one in a while. So yummy. The menu was extensive and I had a hard time choosing. We decided on the Bar Pigalle Burger which was a double smash patty and it was AMAZING! I chose the trout and let me tell you! The presentation was so beautiful that I didn't want to eat it and ruin it. But it was delicious! I was eyeballing the carrots that the couple next to us ordered and just had to have some. Holy smokes. They were delectable!! I want more!!! I guess you can tell that I recommend coming here. Everything was fabulous! The restaurant is very new and it's a hit! We will recommend it to everyone and we will be back. The decor is charming and warm. Four of us had a lot of shareable items. Drinks menu has interesting items. We had assorted drinks. One classy martini, one glass of pinot noir and two M43 beers on tap. We all tasted each drink. Tasty! Seafood Crudo was fresh great flavors; grilled shrimp was fresh and delicious; smoked whitefish dip was different than a usual whitefish dip- It was warm with capers; assorted mushrooms were so good with a thin hummus foundation; halibut delicious with english peas. Beets were fabulous big fresh chunks. Bread service worked to sop up the flavors. So much fresh seasonable foods with great herbs. Dessert: we split a rhubarb cobbler with fresh rhubarb and light crumble and an interesting bite of cardamom. And we split a S'More too. Fresh decaf coffee was a great ending. read more

Where do I begin? We loved The Beverly! I can't remember the name of our cocktails, but it was a refreshing gin drink with grapefruit and lemon and it did not disappoint. Next, we had the baked oysters with breadcrumbs. Whatever that delicious sauce is that they marinate the oysters in, I need more of it!! It was so delicious. My husband had the grilled shrimp and french fries. He can be a picky eater, but he had no complaints and loved his meal. I had what is best described as a deconstructed chicken pot pie. It was marvelous and I enjoyed every bite. I also had a side of the carrots and whipped feta to go along with it and they were also fresh and delicious. There was no room for dessert as we were stuffed. However, I will definitely be back to the Beverly. The interior is beautiful and it had a very welcoming and modern aesthetic. It was a full house and yet we still felt taken care of and the service was top-notch. There's a very small parking lot, but we were able to park right next-door to the restaurant. Tried The Beverly for a brunch on a Sunday. Brunch was a recent innovation, as the restaurant had only been open for 4 months, and at first only offered dinner. The experience was very positive, and made us want to return to try dinner. The brunch menu was very complete, which we appreciated, as one of us is not an egg eater. The co-diner ordered sourdough waffle, which came with whipped ricotta cheese and maple syrup. He enjoyed it very much. I got the French omelet, which was served with what was called "crispy potatoes." The potatoes were actually whole small (new?) potatoes, possibly crisped on the stove, and a green salad. Both of us got coffee, which was very good. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. He neither hovered excessively nor vanished, as is all too common, in our experience. One slight negative: meats available on the breakfast menu were all pork products. We try to avoid pork, and would have appreciated it if an alternative protein had been available. We look forward to returning to The Beverly to try the dinner menu, and wish the establishment best of luck going forward. read more

Wanted to love everything about the Beverly... and cannot say that we did. Drinks were great, food was great. However, we could not order apps separate from the entrees. All food had to be ordered at once. The wings and Mac n cheese were brought out as apps. The Mac n cheese was intended to be an entree. Before bringing the entrees they offered to clear or box our apps.. (wanted to save the Mac n cheese for entrees but couldn't). Entrees were brought and great but again several staff members asking to take our plates while we were still eating.. it became laughable with our table. Our reservation was at 6:00 and we were out of there at 7:15. For a $238 dinner for 4 you'd hope to have NONE of whatever that was happening. Had dinner and brunch. The food is fine, no dish appears to be too challenging for the Oakland palate. But the plating and proportions are always off. The place seems carb forward and vegetable backward. Example: In NYC I had the classic chicken/waffle. Came with an arugula side. Made the plate look very nice and the vinegar in the dressing balanced the meat. Beverly is just meat/biscuit and a few pickle slices. The chicken and biscuit are almost the same color. Just looked boring. A side of pickles -- a low bar. They could bring this dish up a notch for very little cost. Pretty place, but I can't find a compelling reason for a third visit. This was a well run machine! Very nice neighborhood restaurant with great food, very nice new interior design. Pretty fair price. Will make this a regular stop read more
