This place was pretty good, you go down an alley and give the password at the door ( in my email), then go down some stairs, pass a kitchen and you meet a silver door. For food they have a selection of small bites, large bites, and desserts. We opted for the Shanghai lettuce wraps on the small bite menu 7/10 due to the fact we had to wrap the meat in the lettuce ( reminded me of sloppy Joe meat), lamb chops 6/10 good flavor I ordered them Medium but I'd say it was cooked less, and chicken tikka which was amazing and delicious 10/10. I had an old fashioned which was delicious 10/10 and came out of a bottle with smoke at the table. Service was good and our server was attentive, will I return? Fun spot to celebrate a friend's milestone birthday. The drinks were very creative! We were able to convince our group to just focus on small plates instead of ordering entrees which was an inspired decision! From the secret password, to the drinks & the noms, everything was spot on! The old fashionds? Insane in a good way. The dramatic addition of applewood smoke is perfect. Back again! I'm updating my review because...I can! This past Saturday I went for dinner with the wife and friends and this time, I tried the lettuce wraps. Was not disappointed in them at all. The trick is though, you have to eat them right away and don't let them sit for too long or else the filling will get cold. I also have to give props to the choice of music used throughout the night. I attended a wine tasting event with a group here, and it was a lovely networking experience that I'd highly recommend. We were all seated in their private room upstairs and were each served small pours of 4 different wines along with appetizers in a span of 2 hours. I really loved the first wine the best - an orange wine from France - Cancan Brute Nature Orange. What's great about these events is that you can order bottles of the wine featured at great prices - my favorite was only $15. For each "round," we were served, Johnny spoke to us about the wine, and then we chatted and enjoyed for a few minutes before the next course and wine arrived. It was a great way to spend some time with people you may not know very well, but it would also be fun with friends or family. I was very impressed with Johnny's knowledge, and he was an engaging presenter. I loved learning about biodynamic wine, specific varietals, and the Mediterranean region, which was featured for this event. I'd make it a point to return, especially to buy wine. The food was good - I particularly remember the gruyere cheese dip and the focaccia being really good. Everything was decent but not super memorable or inventive. This was a really unique experience! First, you have to find the place. It's a door in an alley where you have to push the doorbell, say the password, then get let in. Warning that we did have to walk down a flight of stairs! They led us back past another door and into the speakeasy. You must have a reservation. We were one of the first groups there, but soon the place was lively and a nice vibe. We only got one appetizer for food which was good, but mostly came for the drink experience. We had a lot of fun trying different drinks not sure how they would be presented to us! The final rose drink even came in a flower pot with Oreos on top. A password is required to gain entrance to this unassuming establishment which has as its entrance a non-descript door in an alley. Blink and you'll miss it! You'll need to make a reservation in order to get the password which is sent to you the day of your reservation. I don't know what happens if you don't have a password. Push the buzzer and hope they let you in? lol The cocktail menu is grouped by your favorite spirit. I started with the Final Rose which was served in a flower pot. Yes, a flowerpot complete with a rose. There is a layer of crushed Oreos because no flower pot is complete unless it has dirt. My second drink was the Rain Forest that was gussied up with a tropical flower. My friend M ordered the Corpse Reviver which is served with great flair complete with dry ice and a skull-shaped cup. I started with the arancini and for my main course a Beef Wellington made with phyllo dough instead of puff pastry. It was really tasty. My three friends split the Alchemi salad, arancini and the Thai Street ribs. I apologize for not getting a photo of the menu. The menu on the website is different than what we had so my guess is that it changes seasonally. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake which was served in an elephant ear. The speakeasy vibe is cute and all, but the real draw to Johnny's is A) the incredible food, B) their otherworldly smoked Old Fashions and C) the talented wait staff. From the alley entrance to the refrigerated door entrance, to the club, the speakeasy vibe was really nice. Once inside the ambiance and the food takes center stage. Johnny doesn't have an extensive menu but everything on the menu is done exceptionally well. Personally, I prefer quality over quantity and the quality at Johnny's is fantastic. I had the Wagyu beef strudel that literally melted in my mouth. Johnny's has an extensive bar. You can order aged, top shelf or well and all levels in between. Their signature cocktail is the smoked Old Fashion. It was the best Old Fashion I remember having. The third reason to make Johnny's a "must see ' in Royal Oak , is their excellent wait staff. I was very reluctant to come to Johnny's "speakeasy" because I avoid the 'burbs north of 8 mile like the plague. But it was really nice. First, calling Johnny's a speakeasy is a stretch. The door is in a pseudo alley and you need a password which will be txt'd to you the day of your reservation. Upon entering you will walk down a set of stairs, behind a working kitchen and through a door that looks like a commercial refrigerator. I was pleased that when entering the actual restaurant the smell of the back kitchen all but dissipates. The decor is dark and kinda of modern. But dark, so it's hard to tell. It was 2 in our party, we split the lettuce wraps and molten lava cake. For drinks I got the Holland Fog then the I'll Haba'nother One, my partner got the Okd Smokey and the Madagascar Express. The lettuce wraps were far too sweet for my taste and the cake was ok. The drinks were phenomenal and the service was perfect. I don't think I'll be back just because I really cannot tolerate the generalized pretentiousness of the population of northern burbs. But if anyone is looking for a good bar with a prohibition theme and you've tried all of the more traditional speakeasy's in Detroit - I would recommend Johnny's. read more

Our table of 4 started with the Thai ribs and mushroom arancini. Easy to share and great tasting! We tried the lobster 'pap' and cheese, delicious pappardelle pasta in a lobster bisque sauce crowned with a lobster tail. Fabulous! The salmon in curry sauce was perfection as well. The lamb bolognese was studded with tender shredded lamb and delicious. We tried the smoky Manhattan, the corpse reviver was the best I have had. The Peaky Blinder came with roasted marshmallows too! First things first, the service was spot on. Same for the restaurant above when we went there a couple weeks ago. They have some wonderful staff. I believe Chris was our waiter and Joe was behind the bar. The drinks here are my favorite. They all have some extra fun flair to them that really elevates the experience. The food is really good, I liked everything but you have to get the Street Ribs and the Cherry Crème Brûlée. The ambiance is dark and intimate. They had live music very fitting of a prohibition era speakeasy which we loved. I'm a total sucker for speakeasys so when I recently visited Michigan, I made it a point to find one. It was a cold snowy day and I was excited to fill my belly with some good old cocktails to make me warm. I texted their number to make a reservation and they responded pretty quickly. The day of my reservation, they texted me some directions and their password. I parked in a paid lot across the street and walked over. Do not walk to the front of Alchemi - proceed to the back alley to their delivery entrance. You will see a Ring doorbell with a sign that says "No Entry! Authorized personnel only!" You will ring the doorbell and someone will come greet you and you will have to provide them with the password. Once inside, they walked me through the storage area and into their speakeasy. It was dark and lowly lit, quiet, and a great place to sit back and enjoy some drinks. We ordered a few pours of whiskey, cocktails, absinthe, and a charcuterie board. Everything was divine, the service was spectacular, and we had a great night. It was my husband's birthday and they brought out a creme brulee for us. I celebrated my 50th birthday with a few friends and family and I tell you hands down the best restaurants ever. Nothing but spectacular, from making the reservation to the actual day. This is a low key hidden gem. Absolutely gorgeous on the inside. When my guest and I got to the secret location we were all given a password to get in,cause it is exclusive. Once in were greeted and taken through a hall to our beautiful table and most gracious host/ waiter and he was amazing. Now let me get to the food, all im going say Chefs Kiss. Baby those crabs cakes were some the best I ever had and my meal I had the lobster and shrimp pad thai. All my guest raved over there food.
