I tend to exaggerate my feelings for particular restaurants when I enjoy a good meal there (especially when I'm hungry). But Zana is easily one of the better fine dining experiences I've had in the state of Michigan. It also helped that I had dinner with some close friends who I haven't had many opportunities to spend time with in recent memory. The restaurant is located in downtown Birmingham, so by default it has to deliver on every front. It has such a beautiful and spacious dining area that makes you feel like you're at a VIP party. The menu is not lacking in options, with pretty much all the types of items you would expect from an upscale establishment. The oysters were so fresh, the harissa shrimp was outstanding, and my lamb chops were cooked to absolute perfection. We shared a lot of items, so we got a good idea of what this place offered and I don't think anyone in our party were disappointed. We ended up splitting the bill evenly between all of us and were surprised that we didn't spend more money. Zana really left a good lasting impression on us, so I hope that we will be just as satisfied when we make a return. read more

Ambiance is nice. Staff was attentive. Prices aren't horrible. I'm marking this place down for a much over cooked steak. I ordered the steak frites and I imagine that the steak would have been great if prepared to medium or medium well. However it was medium well to well done. I was here for a work dinner so I wasn't going to make a scene in front of a business partner. But it was disappointing. This place is beautiful. I came in for happy hour and was blown away the moment I walked in. We got oysters and calamari and both were 10/10. I loved the house made hot sauce that came with the oysters and the calamari is some of the best I've had. The bartender was super knowledgeable about the restaurant and answered all our questions and even told us about their sister restaurants (Talulah). Happy hour here is 4-6 Monday - Friday and features $2 oysters and that calamari I can't get enough of. read more

This restaurant is beautiful, but the food and drinks are touch and go. The Bernadette cocktail was delicious, but the second glass I ordered tasted completely different. I think the first drink the bartender must not have added the Serrano as it wasn't spicy. The inconsistency was a bummer, because I really enjoyed the first drink. Our group had apps, salads, entrees, sides and desserts. The standout apps were the whipped ricotta and shrimp although the portion of the ricotta was very small. The shrimp are huge! The calamari was not good and over breaded. The scallops were good and presented nicely - the dehydrated spinach was delicious. We dined in the private room. 18 people. Service was ok. A lovely time eating dinner here with my wife this weekend. The decor is beautiful and the service was very attentive. We got our cocktails sorted and chose the baked feta app. Delicious. We ended up with four cocktails and each one looked great and tasted fantastic. We opted to share the steak frites (lovely tender steak, perfect fries) and the cacio e pepe with shrimp added. A great all around experience - will definitely be back! My few minor notes intended for improvement of an already great experience - we had an ipad device left at the table, but without explanation that we needed to look for the drink menu here. This was easy enough to figure out, but we assumed it was something the server would utilize when she arrived. The baked feta app was very tasty, but 4 small corners of pita bread was not anywhere near sufficient for this. I would at least double this. First of all the vibe here is so beautiful. Looks classy, pretty, and aesthetic. Lots of picture spots in this restaurant. Our server was sweet and was attentive to my questions. I got the full monte cocktail which tasted good at first but it was a little too sweet but I picked one of the cocktails that the server did not suggest. We got some starters (whipped ricotta, oysters, and lobster bisque) and drinks (Bernadette and a few beers) which were great! We went with the Tomahawk special mentioned by the server that we had seen in previous reviews. Presentation was very nice however the steak was very undercooked. Our server noticed this immediately when serving, which was appreciated as they offered to have it cooked further. Once it was brought back, the manager was very apologetic, however the steak was still very undercooked. It is not the end of the world but pretty disappointing that this was supposedly their special and were unsuccessful in the execution...twice. Could we have asked them to cook the steak a 3rd time? Yes, but when it is priced at $150 it really should be done right the first (or even second) time. The other entree we got was the lobster ravioli. You get a pretty portion of lobster but would not say great. With that all said, I wouldn't discourage anyone from grabbing a drink here if you're in the area! read more

We had a very good meal here. The menu is sort of Mediterranean/Middle Easter fusion, with dishes from various countries, from France to Armenia. We started with sharing lamb and beef arayes, which we loved. It is lamb and beef cooked together and wrapped in pita bread, served with yogurt. For mains, my wife had the Duck Confit, while I had Caccio e Pepe. The duck was fantastic and I would highly recommend it. The caccio was kind of mid but I enjoyed it. From the ambiance to the menu and finally the service, this new restaurant in downtown Birmingam has it dialed in. We received a warm greeting by the hostess, she noticed that we preferred to sit away from the kitchen and offered to move us. The waitress was very knowledgeable and was able to eloquently describe the menu and specials. I thought the Burrata was very fresh. I would have preferred to have fresh veggies but the Brussels sprouts were delicious. The Wagu meatballs served with toasted bread are the stars here. My friends fish was well made and well seasoned. We did not love our dessert and the manager noticed that. He asked us questions, sent us another dessert to try and seemed genuinely interested in feedback. He says they are trying a new in house pastry chef, so I look forward to trying their new and improved creations soon. He even subtracted dessert from our bill which was unnecessary but pleasant. read more

I looked at restaurant recommendations when I knew that I was going to spend a night in Troy, MI. The only restaurant that was close to where I was heading and got a write up online when I search was ZANA. The town is Birmingham. I was impressed with the town center, and ZANA was right in the middle of the busy area. It was a slow night, I suppose as the restaurant was at about 10% capacity. As I settled in, I noticed how quickly my service person arrived. Great coordination. The appetizer I ordered was the burrata salad. It had walnuts, crispy Brussels sprouts, red grapes, and prosciutto wrapped burrata. Great description but the actual execution left something to be desired. Overall, it was too bitter because there were too much of the fried, crispy Brussels sprouts. The burrata itself was too dense for this particular combination. It would benefit from a fresher, more runny burrata. The balance the color, it could use some other fruit to introduce citrus, sweet flavor. For the entree, I chose the filet mignon as the other steak option was a surprising $110 for an aged steak. The temperature was perfect, the filet was tensor. I liked it. It could use less salt though to let the wonderful beef flavor to come out. The surprise of ZANA was the price point. It was no less than a top restaurant in New York City. I was just in Orlando. I could have the same meal at about 25% less! I wouldn't have imagined it for Birmingham, MI. read more

Update: I dined here recently for my birthday on a Saturday night, and from the moment we stepped in, had an uncomfortable experience. The hostess was not welcoming and reminded us several times that we have limited time to dine, despite the fact that we arrived early for our reservation. Once seated we placed our appetizer order immediately and were served fairly quickly. We then placed our entree order and waited close to an hour for two dishes. Patrons around us that were seated after my party received their food well before us. Ultimately we decided to take our entrees to go given that we had been reminded repeatedly that we had limited time to dine. I had looked forward to celebrating here given how good my first experience was, however I don't think I can recommend this for a Saturday night dinner or special occasion. read more

Celebrated my husband's 40th bday yesterday in one of the private rooms and had such an amazing time. Highly recommend hiring an event designer to setup the table like I did, which made it extra special! Wanted to give a shout out to our server Dustin, who was extremely attentive and brought really great energy to our table! The food was phenomenal!!! We ordered multiple plates of the steak tartare, calamari and harissa shrimp. The lamb chops and tomahawk were fire and one of the best steaks we've had in a while! Decided to go to Zana to celebrate a birthday. There was 3 of us. The decoration and ambiance of the place are really nice. The colors are beautiful. The server did a decent job. Now... for the food. We ordered margaritas. They were ok, nothing impressive. We had the beet salad which was great, it was tasty even though the whipped feta to beet ratio was off. We also ordered the calamari, they were over breaded. Lastly, and perhaps most disappointing, was the Tomahawk. The birthday person wanted it and the server said it could feed up to 4 people. So we got it, asked for medium. After about 50 minutes (time which we were warned about) it came. The presentation is quite fancy. It comes with bourbon potatoes and onions. They light it on fire for show purposes. The potatoes were tasteless, and I mean tasteless. The steak was overcooked. Maybe two pieces in the middle were cooked medium and pretty much the rest was medium well to well done. It was also extremely fatty, and I mean chunks of fat around it which I guess it's how they get to say it's 48 oz. It definitely couldn't have fed 4 people. And what do you say at that point? We have been waiting for 50 minutes for this $150 steak and it's overcooked and extra fatty, give us another one? Try again? So we just went ahead, ate it and when we were asked how it was we said it was good because that's what you do when saying anything else than that would result in nothing but a "sorry". We were also called before we showed up to be told we only had the table for 2 hours and after that we had to go. I guess because we ordered the tomahawk they gave up another 24 minutes before they told us they had a 9 people reservation coming. Was disappointed when we ordered the Burrata appetizer for $19 we were told it didn't come with bread/crackers/anything to dip so we also had to ordered the bread appetizer that was $9. Of course it is an upscale dining spot, so I expected to spend a fair amount but thought it was strange that they don't just combine the two on the menu. Well the hyped new place with pretty décor, none existent service and at best mediocre food. I hoped for a much better well everything! To the good beautiful decor light colors plush couches and greenery. We were seated at the plush couch section next to big windows love it you can people watch and weather was beautiful. Our waitress went to another table that was seated after us before she came over ok no problem we not in a hurry. Not introducing herself, just abrupt what do you want to drink? Well to be honest with you with a place that positions its self that high up service needs to be immaculate. Ordered drinks, no napkins drink dripping everywhere, no water offered, walked away, had to literally grab another waiter to get everything straightened out including ordering food. First of all, this is a GORGEOUS new addition to the Bham dining scene. The buildout is sleek, sophisticated, open, and airy. And it's clientele are stylish, well-heeled suburbanites. From the looks alone, I was anticipating a meal to match. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. My Sapphire martini up with 3 olives, and my wife's pomegranate martini were both excellent. A good start! Then the chopped wedge we shared to start had a lovely, slightly sweet cream dressing tossed with fresh greens. But it also included big cubes of bacon. Their purpose was to pair with perfectly portioned chunks of blue cheese to balance the sweetness of the dressing. But the 1/2" cubes couldn't be included in a bite with with the other components. They were so big and chewy, that you could only eat them by themselves - like a separate starter on their own. For those to work in this salad, they needed to be about 1/4 the size. My salmon entree was beautifully plated, visually lovely. Alas, the fish under its nicely crisped crust was dried out and tasteless. Fish always requires a light hand. Overcook it, and it's dead. But salmon with its higher fat content is one of the more forgiving of fishes. For this piece to be as dry as it was meant that it was either on the fire way too long. Or it sat under the lights in the pass long enough to bleed every bit of moisture out of it. My wife chose the meatball appetizer and fries for her main. Meatballs need the meat part to be super rich (fatty) to begin with, or combined with breadcrumbs to insure they're light and juicy. These were like eating golfballs in tomato sauce - hard, dense, flavorless. But the one thing you can almost always count on at a high end restaurant are great fries. Done properly, they can redeem almost any lackluster meal. Sadly, not at Zana. They had nice color but were lacking in flavor. And worst of all - NO CRUNCH. These were limp and greasy. Great fries are crispy outside, soft and fluffy inside. Not always easy to accomplish. But if you're in Birmingham, and that's what you're craving, head past Zana and go straight to Townhouse, 220 or The Hunter House. The manager did stop by to apologize for the fish. And our lovely and attentive server did take it off the bill. But we were done with this disappointing experience, so we skipped dessert and coffee. (But if this were my floor to run, I would have come by with a couple of desserts gratis and maybe an after dinner drink to try to win back some goodwill. Just sayin...) I typically don't review the restaurants we visit. But if I do, never would I spend this amount of time on one. So why this time? Because one night a week my wife and I like to walk up town, have an admittedly pricey, albeit yummy dinner and a cocktail. Walking into Zana we were so excited to have another go-to spot. Not to be. And given the number of open tables at 8:30 on a Saturday night, I suspect that others have suffered the same disappointment that we did. So, to the owners of Zana... I know this ain't NYC, and I'm not expecting Per Se or Le Bernardin. But here's my advice. Find yourself a top level chef to fix the menu and the prep. Then get yourself a storm trooper of a GM, and an Expediter to partner with him/her to oversee the kitchen staff and make sure every plate that leaves the pass is up to snuff. Otherwise, I fear you'll be another one of the cool, pricey restaurants that have previously occupied this spot that now have "Permanently Closed" stamped at the top of their Yelp! listing. read more

The place is super cute. Has a nice modern ambience. The place is fairly large and has private rooms available for parties/events. The restaurant does get very loud. Drinks: I typically like to have a glass of riesling but it wasnt available (was surprised). It had a collection of various wines but not riesling. Had their house cocktail "lady of the house". It looked beautiful and tasted ok (I don't like gin), when asked to do it with vodka, was told it can't be done. Food: food is overpriced! It was yummy but pricey. Burata, meatballs, and fish entre were good...but did I say pricey?:) Dessert: I'm a chocolate lover. They only had one chocolate cake so I ordered it. I didn't like the spice they were using. It was overpowering. Pudding Dessert with pomegranate and raspberry sounded good but again was not impressed. I think they tried too hard to have a unique recipe but sometimes few classics like teramisu could be a safe/better choice. Unfortunately, it wasn't on the menu Service: our service staff was great. In fact, when manager noticed we didn't like our first Dessert, he replaced it with a different one on the house. Very nice gesture. Will give it another try in few month. read more

This new American cuisine with European influence restaurant while not very budget friendly but makes up with a spacious open floor trendy and elegant decor. Menu is interesting but I wish they would mix in some traditional dishes along with their own creations for that one picky eater in a party (ok, it's me ;) ). Meat balls had good flavor but a bit dry. But burrata appetizer was delicious. It did come with heavily fried Brussels sprouts - while tasty - I would have preferred fresh greens instead. Specialty cocktails sounded delicious but when I asked to sub liquor (I think it had rum or whiskey) for vodka - I was told that all cocktails were already premade and couldn't be substituted. :(. Also, what happened with Riesling? None on the menu...sigh. Dessert menu was whimsical but, again, why not add in something traditional that always works- like tiramisu. Manager however was very attentive and swapped our dessert when we said we didn't like what we ordered. If you want to use our table for bottle service, don't let us reserve it. It was my birthday and it felt like they were kicking us out. My friend's dirty martini was nasty.
