In short, ambiance was good, service was great but food was just average. Arrived on Sunday during happy hour. Got the oyster and shrimp and whitefish pate. The oysters were fresh, no seafood smell, and paired beautifully with horseradish (fresh), cocktail sauce, and some lemon and some ground black pepper. I would come back for this. Shrimp was fresh but not amazing. It cooked well and paired well with cocktail sauce and the ?aioli? sauce however did not impress me even for the happy hour price. All the tables had it so I decided to try it but I wouldn't order it again. These are medium size shrimp and the highlight is the sauce, not the shrimp. The whitefish pate was so-so as well. It was a good dip, but again nothing special. Did it go well with saltine crackers? Yes, however these crackers were not house-made and were pre-packaged. Meh. The whitefish itself was not worth the price and I am glad I did not get it at full price. It wasn't bad, just not amazing in my opinion. After looking through the menu, and looking at what everyone got, I decided on the lobster roll. This did not impress me as well. It is 5-6 oz of lobster, pure lobster. I got it hot, with melted butter and some cajun seasoning. The lobster itself was cooked but it lacked flavor. Bun + lobster. That's it. I didn't know I had to add A LOT of seasoning and butter for there to be some flavor which did not make me feel particularly good about myself. It is a small sandwich, the promised 5-6 oz of lobster, but not worth $33 in my opinion. Service was stellar. Our kid, who usually watches iPad/phone was well entertained by our waiter and the coloring materials available. Service was quick and frequent and amicable. The menu was explained well. Ambiance - pretty good. Pretty lighted with natural sun with lots of windows and not dimly lit. Kid Friendly. Not exactly the most romantic dimly lit place, so don't expect that. Was seated near the window, which was nice, but what was outstanding was the high back chairs. Loved those. The place is cute, clean and casual. Attentive, friendly staff who don't mind if you split items. Shared the Maine Lobster roll and Fish tacos. Nice option for some seafood! I had looked at the menu on their site before stopping in, and based on that alone I thought this was going to be a pretty casual east coast seafood shack like spot. I walked in around 11:15am on a Sunday (shortly after they opened) for an early lunch and it was pretty empty. Sat at the bar and enjoyed: (1) Connecticut (hot buttered) lobster roll. They also have a cold mayo option. Generous amount of lobster with large meaty chunks! Warm and buttery roll. I wouldn't compare it to actual east coast lobster rolls (that wouldn't exactly be fair), but it's really good for the area! Added a crack of salt to mine. (2) Chowder fries. This is exactly what it sounds like and it is phenomenal. I would come here just for this. Though for a side, I would say it's definitely sharing size. Cute spot with a nice atmosphere, though the seating wasn't the most comfortable. Parking was tight in the structure! I ordered the seafood boil bag, which came with a huge bucket of legs at a great price. It was a bit cold and overcooked, and I had to ask for crackers and melted butter since my server was busy. No big deal, though, I ate it all except the corn and potatoes (too much food!). I thought about giving the leftovers to a homeless woman nearby, but she vanished before we left. I finally tried the warmed lobster roll, and wow--what a treat. The lobster was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, but what really sealed the deal was the buttery toasted roll. It was golden, soft, and basically the perfect vessel for all that deliciousness. Every bite felt indulgent and satisfying. That being said... it was *expensive*. Had dinner for the first time last night celebrating hubby's birthday, and it was excellent. Such an enjoyable dining experience from the vibe to the food and drinks to the service. If I lived closer, we'd be here more often for sure. I started with a cocktail - the salty dog - a vodka grapefruit drink that was delightful and not too sweet - perfect. If I wasn't driving, I'd have had 2. Hubby had a perfect Maker's old fashioned, and they have a nice beer menu. We ordered oysters, wings, the grouper and the fish and chips. Everything was hot (or cold), fresh and delicious. The oysters were top notch - they had 4 or 5 varieties to choose from, and our server had great recommendations. He was outstanding the whole night; I'd go back just to have him serve us again. We had an east coast and a west coast variety and enjoyed both so much that we rodered 6 more after our first dozen. Sauces were simple and homemade and just right. I love their homemade hot sauce and the grated horseradish was nice. There was also a cocktail sauce and a red wine vinegar mignonette. Next, the wings came out hot and fast and were served with homemade buffalo and blue cheese - fall off the bone tender and so flavorful. We eat wings everywhere, and these stood out because of how nice and tender they were. I'd for sure try their fried chicken based on those. For entrees, hubby had the grouper which was perfectly cooked and served with a lemon butter wine sauce, potatoes and green beans, and I had the fish and chips, which was a large piece of cod and fries - I was able to give half to hubby to share. Perfectly fried, crispy and fresh; just needed a touch of salt. Decent coleslaw. Finally, our server surprised hubby with a chocolate ice cream dessert for his birthday - exactly what he likes! Very yummy. Again, I have to reiterate how excellent our server was - he was knowledgeable, clearly knew the menu, and had great recommendations. I also ordered the Lobster Roll with Garlic Parm fries. Those garlic Parm fries were some of the best fries that I've had. They serve the lobster roll 2 ways. I got it cold. However, I would try it hot with the butter, lemon, and chives next time. In my humble opinion, they should consider grilling the bun to order, so that it's has texture/crunch to it. That bun in garlic butter, would have been AMAZING. The Lobster needed more fresh lemon and I added chives, but I should have gotten more. Hazel's is one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in metro Detroit this year. I have been searching for a decent lobster roll for years. I was disappointed with the lobster rolls I had at another restaurant and a food truck. They were overpriced for what you received, and the taste wasn't good. The Connecticut Lobster Roll at Hazel's was at the same price point as the other restaurants but larger, much better quality, and offered excellent sides. The lobster roll came with a side of butter, although the sandwich was already well-buttered. The lobster meat was chunky and tender. I chose the crispy potatoes for an extra cost and would order them again. They were large, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. The Tinned Tuna Belly came with mustard sauce and saltines. It was gourmet tuna. It tasted good, but it wasn't the type of tuna belly I had thought it would be. I want to try so much more on the menu, like the Whole Fried Fish, the Alaskan Halibut, Escargot, and Oysters. Currently, the menu is Fall Pacific Coast, and the menu changes seasonally, so there will be a new menu in January. read more

We made reservations and when we arrived, were seated promptly. We got there during happy hour so we ordered the mussels and they didn't disappoint! For our dinner, we ordered the whole fried fish (snapper) and the rockfish. The fried fish was delicious and fried perfectly! It came with lettuce, tomato, avocado, onions, tortillas, and aioli so you can build your own fish tacos. We didn't need all of those "extras" as we were happy with just the whole fish. Went to Hazel's for my mom's birthday, she absolutely loves seafood. A very spacious building with very cute seafood decor. They were able to seat us in an area that was pretty private so we could just enjoy our family time. We got crab cakes and oysters as appetizers which were tasty but probably should have order more for our large party. I opted to be basic and just get fish and chips but was not disappointed at all. I came for the lobster roll and I can solidly say it's the best one I've had outside of New England. I tried the Connecticut style lobster roll and it was petite but overloaded with the sweetest, freshest lobster. The bun was nicely toasted. I opted for a Caesar side salad in substitute for the potatoes that come with the roll normally - warning the markup price for substitutes is substantially more than the difference in price for side items individually. It was $5 extra to substitute the side salad though the price difference on the menu of sides was $2. We split the Wrecking Ball for dessert - an ice cream ball coated with a mixture of toffee, nuts, pretzels and more. We were told that the in-house pastry chef makes the toffee, peanut butter cups and other components of the mixture that goes on the ice cream ball. I think four people could split the wrecking ball and each get a nice but not overwhelming amount of dessert. The ambiance of the restaurant is much more casual than I was expecting. This is not a fancy, date night seafood restaurant. It's more like all the casual seafood restaurants in New England, complete down to the menu placemats. Service was polite, quick and accurate. went yesterday for lunch. $7 happy hour. they had either gin or vodka for $7 so i got gin and loved it too my bartender, who was literally a dream. amazing customer service... she made me a gin with a lavender lemonade or something like that and it was very good. It wasn't super sweet and i could definitely taste the difference between the gin and tequila which is what i normally drink. The wings didn't have a lot of flavor but the ranch was good and they kept their temperature for a very long time. I guess I got interrupted so I didn't check in when I hosted a meetup group dinner. I waited for that to review since I know the group has great taste and order a wide range of items. No one was disappointed. I had the lobster bisque which is almost as good as Weber's. Chunks of lobster. I also got the hush puppies and found another place to get them besides Long John's (don't laugh you know you love those too). I know the food is good when my group start to thank me mid meal for arranging the meal. Lobster roll was a hit and even the odd ball who ordered the token burger loved it. The different way fish and chips were enjoyed reflected how you can have them the normal way or high class way. The dessert menu is small but it has a British option - Banofee pie. A mixture of banana cream and toffee. Worth every penny of cost. Those who ordered adult drinks had some seconds which is not the norm. Service was average but not slow. I know the group will want to come again and I will even drive over 15 miles one way to get the lobster bisque, hush puppies, and banofee pie. read more

We finally went to Hazel's to try the lobster rolls. There are a couple of garages very close for parking, it was free on a Sunday. We each ordered a cocktail to have with some oysters as a starter. I got the Salty Dog, but felt the flavors confusing. First sip I used the straws & it was pleasant & grapefruity. Next I sipped from the edge of the glass with pink Himalayan sea salt. I love salt on my Margarita glass, but it seemed odd paired with grapefruit. Husband had the BC, their take on a Negroni, which he enjoyed. We asked for a half dozen oysters, a mix of three different kinds. The kitchen ticket was given to us, which listed what kinds they were, but the runner who brought them to the table didn't know which was which. We shared the wedge salad, very very good! We each got the Connecticut style lobster roll, because--butter! While the lobster was warm, it didn't taste 'buttery'. But lobster, so I was happy. The roll seemed like brioche, very buttery & light, really good. We shared the garlic fries, so very good, and also hush puppies--probably the best we've ever had. The dinner was very good, we really enjoyed it! Our server was good, but she did seem pretty busy. There was a large party in a closed off side of the restaurant that opened to the dining room. Finally had a chance to visit my friend's restaurant. It's everything I expected and then some. I ordered the hot lobster roll. It's served either hot or cold. The bun was perfectly toasted, not greasy and very light. Lobster chunks were delicious! It came with a side of kettle chips made in Traverse City. My husband and I shared the sandwich. The lobster bisque my husband ordered was perfect. It's almost a day later and he's still talking about it! The shrimp boil our friend ordered was also excellent. He had hush puppies with his order. I tried one and it was yummie! Surprise pieces of onion inside! Bonus! We will definitely be back again! Hats off to the staff who all did a great job too.
