Really nice seafood date night restaurant! My wife and I went here with another couple. We were all CRAVING some good seafood and coming to Hazel's hit the spot! I started with some creamy tomato bisque soup! It was delicious and I didn't have to wait for it to cool off, it was perfect temperature when I got it. Next came my entree, which I chose to be fish and chips because it seemed like I'd get a huge piece. I was not disappointed! The piece I got was MASSIVE. I walked in around 11:15am on a Sunday (shortly after they opened) for an early lunch and it was pretty empty. Sat at the bar and enjoyed: (1) Connecticut (hot buttered) lobster roll. They also have a cold mayo option. Generous amount of lobster with large meaty chunks! Warm and buttery roll. I wouldn't compare it to actual east coast lobster rolls (that wouldn't exactly be fair), but it's really good for the area! Added a crack of salt to mine. (2) Chowder fries. This is exactly what it sounds like and it is phenomenal. I would come here just for this. Though for a side, I would say it's definitely sharing size. I wasn't able to finish, as it's pretty rich and filling! The fries are good but it's the chowder that makes this. I finally tried the warmed lobster roll, and wow--what a treat. The lobster was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, but what really sealed the deal was the buttery toasted roll. Had dinner for the first time last night celebrating hubby's birthday, and it was excellent. Such an enjoyable dining experience from the vibe to the food and drinks to the service. If I lived closer, we'd be here more often for sure. I started with a cocktail - the salty dog - a vodka grapefruit drink that was delightful and not too sweet - perfect. If I wasn't driving, I'd have had 2. Hubby had a perfect Maker's old fashioned, and they have a nice beer menu. We ordered oysters, wings, the grouper and the fish and chips. Everything was hot (or cold), fresh and delicious. The oysters were top notch - they had 4 or 5 varieties to choose from, and our server had great recommendations. He was outstanding the whole night; I'd go back just to have him serve us again. We had an east coast and a west coast variety and enjoyed both so much that we rodered 6 more after our first dozen. Sauces were simple and homemade and just right. I love their homemade hot sauce and the grated horseradish was nice. There was also a cocktail sauce and a red wine vinegar mignonette. Next, the wings came out hot and fast and were served with homemade buffalo and blue cheese - fall off the bone tender and so flavorful. We eat wings everywhere, and these stood out because of how nice and tender they were. I'd for sure try their fried chicken based on those. For entrees, hubby had the grouper which was perfectly cooked and served with a lemon butter wine sauce, potatoes and green beans, and I had the fish and chips, which was a large piece of cod and fries - I was able to give half to hubby to share. Perfectly fried, crispy and fresh; just needed a touch of salt. Decent coleslaw. Finally, our server surprised hubby with a chocolate ice cream dessert for his birthday - exactly what he likes! Very yummy. Again, I have to reiterate how excellent our server was - he was knowledgeable, clearly knew the menu, and had great recommendations. Based on what he likes, I'd order the whole fried fish next time, which was red snapper last night, but can also be branzino, which I love. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

Always love a good Hazel's experience and their HH is a great draw. I've been there 5-6 times over the last year. The oysters are great and always fresh, and they have a great east and west coast selection (though I prefer east coast because they have more brine). The white fish dip is a staple and a must get on the menu, this is also on HH. The bar service is amazing, always had great suggestions and attentive staff. The space itself has high tops behind the bar with plenty of seating and the low tops opposite of the bar with a larger space. The energy is great and they'll always have a Tigers, Red Wings or Lions. Since starting to go there last year, I will say I've seen some of the HH items that used to be great portions for the price really start to dwindle. The peel and eat shrimp used to be a nice size with sometimes 15 shrimp and the last time I was in it was 5, but still the same price. Same with the mussels and the wings. Portions decreased significantly but the prices have remained the same. White fish stayed consistent in portion size and quality, and the oysters are still great. I also ordered the Lobster Roll with Garlic Parm fries. Those garlic Parm fries were some of the best fries that I've had. They serve the lobster roll 2 ways. I got it cold. However, I would try it hot with the butter, lemon, and chives next time. In my humble opinion, they should consider grilling the bun to order, so that it's has texture/crunch to it. That bun in garlic butter, would have been AMAZING. The Lobster needed more fresh lemon and I added chives, but I should have gotten more. Hazel's is one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in metro Detroit this year. I have been searching for a decent lobster roll for years. I was disappointed with the lobster rolls I had at another restaurant and a food truck. They were overpriced for what you received, and the taste wasn't good. The Connecticut Lobster Roll at Hazel's was at the same price point as the other restaurants but larger, much better quality, and offered excellent sides. The lobster roll came with a side of butter, although the sandwich was already well-buttered. The lobster meat was chunky and tender. I chose the crispy potatoes for an extra cost and would order them again. They were large, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. The Tinned Tuna Belly came with mustard sauce and saltines. It was gourmet tuna. It tasted good, but it wasn't the type of tuna belly I had thought it would be. I want to try so much more on the menu, like the Whole Fried Fish, the Alaskan Halibut, Escargot, and Oysters. Currently, the menu is Fall Pacific Coast, and the menu changes seasonally, so there will be a new menu in January. read more

Went to Hazel's for my mom's birthday, she absolutely loves seafood. A very spacious building with very cute seafood decor. They were able to seat us in an area that was pretty private so we could just enjoy our family time. We got crab cakes and oysters as appetizers which were tasty but probably should have order more for our large party. I opted to be basic and just get fish and chips but was not disappointed at all. went yesterday for lunch. $7 happy hour. they had either gin or vodka for $7 so i got gin and loved it too my bartender, who was literally a dream. amazing customer service... she made me a gin with a lavender lemonade or something like that and it was very good. I came for the lobster roll and I can solidly say it's the best one I've had outside of New England. I tried the Connecticut style lobster roll and it was petite but overloaded with the sweetest, freshest lobster. The bun was nicely toasted. I opted for a Caesar side salad in substitute for the potatoes that come with the roll normally - warning the markup price for substitutes is substantially more than the difference in price for side items individually. It was $5 extra to substitute the side salad though the price difference on the menu of sides was $2. We split the Wrecking Ball for dessert - an ice cream ball coated with a mixture of toffee, nuts, pretzels and more. We were told that the in-house pastry chef makes the toffee, peanut butter cups and other components of the mixture that goes on the ice cream ball. I think four people could split the wrecking ball and each get a nice but not overwhelming amount of dessert. The ambiance of the restaurant is much more casual than I was expecting. This is not a fancy, date night seafood restaurant. It's more like all the casual seafood restaurants in New England, complete down to the menu placemats. Service was polite, quick and accurate. We finally went to Hazel's to try the lobster rolls. There are a couple of garages very close for parking, it was free on a Sunday. We each ordered a cocktail to have with some oysters as a starter. I got the Salty Dog, but felt the flavors confusing. First sip I used the straws & it was pleasant & grapefruity. Next I sipped from the edge of the glass with pink Himalayan sea salt. I love salt on my Margarita glass, but it seemed odd paired with grapefruit. Husband had the BC, their take on a Negroni, which he enjoyed. The kitchen ticket was given to us, which listed what kinds they were, but the runner who brought them to the table didn't know which was which. We shared the wedge salad, very very good! We each got the Connecticut style lobster roll, because--butter! While the lobster was warm, it didn't taste 'buttery'. But lobster, so I was happy. The roll seemed like brioche, very buttery & light, really good. We shared the garlic fries, so very good, and also hush puppies--probably the best we've ever had. The lobster roll was packed with big chunks of lobster, was a perfect size, and was everything I expected. The banoffee pie, between me and my friend, was gone in under a minute. The vibe of the place is also pretty nice, with a bar in the middle. Sometimes when it's busy, there's only seats available at the bar, but they are still comfy and there's enough space between the seats to not be awkward. I know the food is good when my group start to thank me mid meal for arranging the meal. Lobster roll was a hit and even the odd ball who ordered the token burger loved it. The different way fish and chips were enjoyed reflected how you can have them the normal way or high class way. The dessert menu is small but it has a British option - Banofee pie. A mixture of banana cream and toffee. Worth every penny of cost. Those who ordered adult drinks had some seconds which is not the norm. Service was average but not slow. Hazel's is by far the best restaurant in Birmingham. The entire staff, from hostesses to bartenders to wait staff is incredible. They are so accommodating and are always able to put us at a table to fit our stroller. They're also very little kid friendly with sippy cups and coloring menus. Never been to Hazel's or knew it existed until a few weeks ago. Looking at the menu online it appeared to be a seafood restaurant, which was great because I was craving crab. Being that the restaurant is in Birmingham I expected it to be very fancy/upscale, but to my surprise it was quite casual and laid back (in a good way). When you come here I HIGHLY recommend the whitefish pate to share with the table. It is some of the best I've ever had, and even if you don't like food that is smokey it's still delicious. We also shared some alligator bites and coconut shrimp, all great as well. For my entree I went with the snow crab claws served with butter-boiled potatoes, green beans, hush puppies and rolls.
