We decided to try this restaurant again, now under new ownership. It's a cute place on top of Papa Joe's market. I love the Niçoise salad. My mom asked the server advised the tomatoes in the salad were "on the vine", they came sliced. We requested extra green beans, the server pointed to the green beans in the salad and brought extra caper berries for $2.50. Although the salad was so colorful, it seemed very small and didn't justify the price. When the manager asked how everything was, we explained the good/bad, he defended his waiter, did not seem interested in actually knowing about our experience and then told us to come back and ask for him, to see what he could do. Unfortunately, I would never do that and sadly probably won't return. It is a very cute place and I hope they figure things out. read more

Stopped by for a quick brunch on a Sunday. It was... fine. Not bad, but not amazing either. I was expecting more from the vibe, especially since it's inside a higher-end grocery store -- figured it would feel a little more special, but the atmosphere was pretty bland. Feels like they're not really leaning into the potential they have. Service was solid. We got there around 12:30PM and it wasn't super busy. Our server was friendly and helpful. Food-wise, it was okay. I did like that the mushrooms in my omelette tasted really fresh, and the potatoes were nice and crispy -- you could tell they weren't from a freezer bag. My friend liked her smoked salmon dish. We also tried the scones as a starter... they were just meh. Probably wouldn't order them again. For $80+ (with tip) for two people, I expected more. It just didn't feel worth that price tag, and I think they could be doing a lot better across the board. We never have a bad meal here. There were 8 of us last night, 6 new to the restaurant, and we ordered A LOT of food! Everyone loved everything. Some five star options from tonight's order: Apps: Brussels sprouts, stuffed mushrooms, steak tartare all 5 stars. We ordered some sushi rolls that were good, as well. 5 start main meals: ahi tuna, prosciutto pizza, lamb sandwich, lamb chops, sea bass. Carrot cake for dessert was amazing! What makes this place even better though, is the service. Jasmin is a rockstar and she does everything with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. She got every order perfectly, we all got our food at the same time, and she never stopped. Martin was amazing with out reservations and planning. Here's what I ate at Bistro Joe's inn Birmingham Michigan. I started with an old fashioned cocktail. They had their own twist on the cocktail, very delicious. For my meal I went with two appetizers which they call "Snacks" on their menu. I had the sticky ribs and brussel sprouts. I'm not a fan of truffles so I requested that the brussel sprouts not have any truffle oil on them and they were excellent. The kitchen had no problem leaving the truffle oil off. So if you're not a fan of truffle oil, but you love brussel sprouts try these! I enjoyed the ambiance in the restaurant. The table settings are really cute and the white rose and the candles make it elegant. The balcony view into the grocery store is really unique as well. Some friends and I went for a group dinner on Sunday evening. This location used to allow separate bills but now they don't, which is a let down. One bill was issued and we could pay with up to four credit cards. It's a pain to have to divvy up everyone's costs and collect money from everyone via different apps. Unfortunately, I think this is a mistake for Bistro Joe's, I wish they didn't change their policy. I will refrain from bringing large groups here in the future. Pro tip: If you decide to come here as a large group who all pay for their own orders separately, I recommend that you bring cash so that you don't have to worry about paying the bill on different credit cards and sorting out who owes who what. My husband and I come here every so often, and I've never had a bad experience. They usually always have a reservation open, which is awesome for last minute date nights. Love the Hummus and Za'atar Pita Chips. It's the perfect appetizer. And the Kale and Quinoa salad is yummy! There are a lot of other great options on the menu, I just wanted to mention those two because it was what I ordered the last time I was there. The only thing I can really say is that maybe they need to add a few more vegetarian friendly dishes to the menu. Overall though, I love coming here! read more

The service was good and when we asked to send back the cedar planked salmon to have it blackened they brought it back quickly and with some free bread and butter. Food: wholly underwhelming, but I kind of expected that given other yelp reviews. My salad was fine, though underdressed and under seasoned, it wasn't inedible. My husband liked the cold dish he ordered (steak tartar). My true issue is with the service. I was there so long I started feeling like I lived there. Dinner reservations for 3 people at 6pm, during which two out of three got cold entrees (salads), no one got appetizers, and two ordered cold desserts (crème brûlée) and the total time, from start to finish, was two and a half hours. It was so excruciating that I started timing the delays at one point. Waited more than a half hour just to place an order for dessert and coffee and the waiter seemed annoyed that we asked to place the order. This was after repeated attempts to get attention to our table. Dessert then took another 20 minutes to get to the table. I 100% understand that the waiter can only do so much if the place isn't properly staffed. But still. Painfully, painfully slow. I can't see ever going back. read more

In town for just a few days and wanting to plan a casual girls' dinner, Bistro Joe's came highly recommended from a local friend... I'd been once prior for drinks and had a positive experience, so I booked a table for our group via Open Table, which was easy enough. Our table was ready early and we were happy to sit outdoors. Service was attentive and our party of five enjoyed cocktails and a mushroom flatbread appetizer to start. My SIL and I shared the kale and quinoa salad and a burger with truffle fries for our meal. It was a delicious combo of healthy and hearty. Others at the table enjoyed hummus and veggies, a Caesar Salad with steak, and a kale/quinoa salad with Salmon. The only feedback that isn't positive that I'd provide is that the paper menus we were given had clearly been used a few too many times as they were both dirty and torn. I know we're still dealing with a pandemic, but I would have prefered to scan a menu or been offered a non-paper menu instead of one that many people had utilized time and time again... My vegetarian lasagna was actually good but the first issue was a large bug in my husband's old fashioned. It seems like it was perhaps in one of the bottles they used to make the drink and it poured out. When he received another, the rate was off. Perhaps a different bartender. He ordered a salad with salmon; the waiter brought the salad without the salmon. He admitted the kitchen forgot the salmon, when it came out, it looked like the photo I attached. My gf suggested Bistro Joe's patio for happy hour on Friday. We arrived before 4pm on an oddly beautiful November evening and snagged one of the last tables available outside. This was my first visit but the waitress quickly welcomed us and went over the offerings. Their menu says happy hour is until 6pm, however, it is now until 5pm. Good to know. We started with the traditional dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Being the first thing to my lips in hours, I was surprised that it tasted so watery but it was just a note. What drew us here are the $1 happy hour oysters. I ordered 12 and my friend did 6. They brought us two containers with 9 oysters in each. Okay - we figured it out, no big deal but this was the first indication of cutting corners for service. I also ordered the ahi mini taco-things and crab stuffed mushrooms. Three tacos for $8 at happy hour. They were good. I would get them again. The mushrooms were excellent. I would go back there simply for those mushrooms again. Real crab meat, nice balance of flavors with the tiny dollop of mustard on top that brought all those flavors together. The oysters were good but not fantastic. Not complaining for $1 each. We ordered the unoaked chardonnay to go with the oysters, which was a good choice. It's much more milder than a traditional chardonnay and didn't overpower the oysters. The Syrah was our last glass of the evening. It was a nice finish. We were there for about 2 hours, simply for the service being overwhelmed and having to wait so long in between orders and for the final check. The final check was wrong but we figured it out just fine. The patio is a makeshift area in the parking lot. Cars still squeeze by between the front door and patio, so be careful. There is a lot of traffic for the grocery market next door. They do have indoor seating as well. Sitting on the second floor semi-outdoor area would be cool, as we would have a better vantage point to see the cars cruising Woodward. We peeked at a few going by from where we were but our view was limited. Solid place. Service was good but too busy. She needed more help. The food runners also need better communication or understanding of where food is going. Everytime the guy came out, he didn't know where he was running the food to. read more

I was super excited to try Bistro Joe's but my friends and I had a pretty bad experience. First off, it took us about 30 minutes to place an order and when our drinks finally came, my friend's wine had a bug in it. After that, we were told that my friend's order of sliders had to be cancelled because they ran out of something they would need to make the sliders. Then my other friend also had to get her flatbread cancelled and instead she ordered a Greek salad which came in a small portion and didn't even have lettuce in it. My salad came with chicken but the chicken was extremely, extremely dry. This spot is reminiscent of one of my favorite LA eateries. As you drive down Woodward the bright yellow trim on the exterior of Papa Joe's Market makes you look and wonder. So one day I gave in to my curiosity and turned in. On a busy day the parking lot can be quite full, but there are spots in the front and in the adjacent side lots. The bistro being connected to the market is a super nice added feature. There is patio seating with plenty of heaters and the inside bistro seating is located upstairs and overlooks the market. Though I didn't measure, dine in seating seems a little more crowded than the current social distancing guidelines. Service is friendly and attentive. Servers all wear masks and appear to use a tag team approach and help each other to make sure all tables are well taken care of. The menu has a good variety of choices. I've gone during happy hour and brunch and always have to narrow things down to a few selections. One of the best happy hours in Birmingham. Pretty much only ever go here for happy hour. The ahi tuna tachushi and shrimp and grits are my two favorites. Some of the bartenders are friendlier than others but for the most part it's always a good experience. Their regular menu is really expensive and only mediocre. I got a salad with salmon but I felt pretty ripped off with the lack of salmon on it. Regular table service is also pretty slow and the servers are pretty meh. I saw this concept of having a restaurant above a gourmet grocery store in a suburb of Columbus Ohio so this must be a national trend. Not a new one except it wasn't upscale when Meijer or K Mart tried it. Of course, those old fashion dime store (those under 40 asked your grandparents about Woolworths) had it before that. Good idea since you should never go shopping on an empty tummy. Or where you shop make you crave something to eat. What makes Joe's upscale is the choices and the price tag. Service is also top notch. Those who drink might call the collection of "crafty cocktails" along with the wine choices upscale. A dinning companion had the Pear Ginger cocktail and said they didn't skip on the grey goose vodka. As for the food, while made of quality ingredients and presented as it should in a high class place, none of us, 5 dinners, talked MUCH about it like we had in other places. One had a dinner salad with salmon, another the bacon wrapped scallops, 1 had the surf and turf special, and 2 of us had center cut prime NY strip, but different sides. I had the strip with fingerling potatoes instead of truffle mashed and asparagus. Lots of potatoes but ONLY 3 asparagus pieces with a price of $26. Strip was good but the zip sauce was too salty and not as good as Andiamo's. All expected more than regular quality with a nice presentation. Desserts were ordered. One ordered the white cake with buttercream frosting and strawberry. I got what was described as their version of Saunders bumpy cake (non Michigan folks go on line to order and yes it is worth the shipping). Another ordered the lemon cookies made into an ice cream sandwich. While the ice cream sandwich and their caramel chocolate cake was good - cake as leftovers, the white cake sure didn't have traditional buttercream frosting so it was a disappointment. It was more like whippy light frosting. Glad I tried but for those who know I add a star for Coke products will know what I thought of the food. read more

Really enjoyable lunch with friends. The atmosphere and ambience is open and fresh. The menu filled with a wide variety of culinary treats. One of my friends and I shared the swordfish with avocado and a chipotle slaw and the mushroom flatbread. Both were tasty and presented beautifully. The prices were a bit high, even for the quality. My other friend ordered kale salad and with the added pieces of steak (probably 4 ounces or less) it was $24 I think. And my other friend had iced tea at $4. I was helping move my daughter into a house in Birmingham and was getting hungry so I suggested we get an early dinner. She said let's pop over to Joe's. I shop at Papa Joe's in Rochester all the time and have driven past the one on Woodward hundreds of times but didn't realize there was a restaurant at the Birmingham location! We walked up the stairs and was greeted by the host. There was a bit of a wait so we decided to eat at the bar. The bartenders were great. They highlighted some of their favorite cocktails and dinner items. I went for the bartender's concoction. I don't remember what it was called, but it's basically a spicy margarita. He used jalapeños infused simple syrup that gave it a wonderful kick. I was in the mood for a burger or sandwich and ultimately decided on the lamb sandwich. The lamb was tender and flavorful and I loved their elevated version of a gyro. I will now come here just for this sandwich. My daughter order the same and my wife the bacon cheeseburger. What she got was the regular cheeseburger. They offered to fix it, but we were in a hurry so she just ate it. Joe's is a nice place. They had some interesting art on the walls and while it was a bit noisy, we were still able to carry on a conversation. I have been to Bistro Joe's a number of times, but not recently. Was looking forward to dinner here last night with a group of friends (12 of us). Things started off wrong right away. The person who set up the reservation requested separate but when we arrived, the restaurant said no. Ok, not a serious problem. They did allow 2 bills and we could make multiple charges. Upon getting the menu, we were also given a sheet that had all the items not available that evening, 16!! 10 were entrees. No replacement/specials. We hung in there. Turns out 2 of the orders were not placed/lost. One guest had requested her steak frites medium, after waiting a significant time, she got it "blue", send back for more cooking. One guest finally requested her shrimp and grits in a go box as it took that long. They did offer free dessert, but only 3 for 12 people to share. I had crab cakes that were barely warm (did not complain). Plus the creme brûlée that we shared was tasteless. What gets me is this restaurant is over the Papa Joe's marketplace. It would seem that is would be easy to create a few additional dishes with the supplies below. It will be a long time before I return. read more

Overall, great place. Really cute? Love it being over a market, say by the wood. Would like to experience sitting on the patio during the summer. The first critique is when I walked in, there were two people at the host stand, the younger guy doesn't stand up, barely makes eye contact. I mean you're the first person I meet in this establishment I've never been, a little effort would've been appreciated. It was a girlfriend date and we shared some apps: ahi tuna tacos, steak tartare, crab stuffed mushrooms and the burrata. All were delicious! The ahi tacos were a little sweeter than I would've preferred since they had bell pepper in them. The steak tartare was different than I've had before, almost like an egg salad. Burrata caprese almost, I mean how can you go wrong? Crab stuffed mushrooms, a1. Wish they had a regular Prosecco, not rosé. Ended with an espresso martini and it was the best way to end the evening. Probably could've added a little garnish or cocoa powder but great. The two other little smaller things, VERY warm in the space. Secondly, our waiter always seemed to be in a rush. Eating at Bistro Joe's during the holidays feels a bit like stepping into the set of a Hollywood movie during the holidays. Everything is perfect, quaint, magical. And, the best view isn't from the windows overlooking Woodward, but from the railing overlooking Joe's Market. Fortunately, the food is also very good. But, I can honestly see myself giving a lower rating if the food is exactly the same, but transported to an ordinary restaurant. Still, there's no denying that the setting is a positive part of the experience. The bloody Mary bar is the best I've ever seen. I was able to put pickled garlic and okra, dill pickle spears, cauliflower, and perfectly burnt hotdogs (!) in a huge glass with a very generous pour of vodka. I was seriously not nearly as hungry by the time the meal arrived, because there are so many goodies to put in the jar. The tomato juice options were also perfect. My wife's mimosa however, was fairly ordinary. It wasn't quite worth the price, but she stole some of my vodka before I assembled my drink to offset how relatively tame it was. I was a little disappointed with the omelettes: my wife's cheese omelette was good, but - strange as it sounds - there was too much cheese. If they had used half the cheese that they use, it would've been just right. My Conquistador Omelette was good, but I was disappointed that there is absolutely no heat in the chorizo. The home fries, however, were probably the best thing on both of our plates. They were perfectly crisp, and seasoned subtly but effectively. We'll definitely be back. There are enough good options on the menu - and the atmosphere is so charming - that I can't imagine not coming back for more. SECOND VISIT: we stopped in for lunch this time, so we tried a completely different part of the menu. We opened with phenomenal fried brussels sprouts with Parmesan cheese shavings. They were done just right, without a hint of greasiness, and just the right amount of crispiness to the leaves. I'm impressed to say that they have Hendrick's Gin: this is phenomenally good Jen, which I've recently discovered, with citrus notes that you don't normally have an agenda. It worked magically with lemon juice. My wife's Chardonnay was also terrific. Then, unfortunately, the main dish let us down. We both got mahi-mahi tacos, which sounded incredible. But, weirdly, they serve them in a crunchy corn taco. I wife remarked that it reminded her of having cheap Ortega brand tacos: it really took away from how good the other components were. Our friend had what they called a grilled cheese, but it was really a massive sandwich with spinach, tomato, and cheese, on Ciabatta bread. It wasn't like a grilled cheese I've ever had, but it was tasty. And, the skin on french fries were phenomenally good. So, once again, we are working our way through this menu, and finding things we like and things we don't like. But, once again, the setting really helped with the dining experience. And, this time, we went to the market and spent a bunch of money on the excellent food that they have there. read more

This is one of those places that is consistently good. Situated on top of Papa Joes, you know they have access to some of the freshest and best produce in town. I end up here at least once or twice a month and I am never disappointed. Some of my favorites include the truffle bone marrow, beef tartar and escargot. Today I opted for the steak fries, substituting the French fries for brussel sprouts. The steak was tender and very skillfully seasoned. This $22 meal was huge and will likely be my dinner as well. My companion picked their soup and salad combo. She had a choice of three soups, salads and sandwiches. Very filling, delicious and affordable lunch for only $13. In already have plans to return this week with a few coworkers for their happy hour that runs from 3-6 pm . $1 oysters and many other specials. Happy Hour is not restricted to the bar area, so you can comfortably bring a large crowd.
