We love to get there before happy hour ends to get the half off oysters..which are always cold and delicious and what a bargain at half off. Let me start by saying that I love seafood, but I don't have it often here at home because we're not close to any oceans that house lobster, crabs, etc. so I often question the freshness of places that offer it. That being said because I love it so much I'm still always looking for a place that offers it and has a good reputation. Now my boyfriend has been wanting to try soft shell crab for a long time so when he mentioned it the other day, I was like well let's find a place that has it. That's when we found Hazel's. We looked over the menu online like we always do and were excited about all the different offerings and what's even more exciting is that they change their menu quarterly based on what's in season. That definitely helped with my freshness concern. The reviews seemed to be good overall with a few negatives sprinkled in there, but you can't win them all right?! The time has come for our date night! Now because Hazel's is located in downtown Birmingham there is no parking at the restaurant, however, we parked in the Peabody garage which is just a one minute walk away and it's no charge for the first 2 hours! When we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by the host who was pleasant. He asked if we had a reservation (we didn't), so he said it would be about a 30 minute wait for 2 unless we want to sit at the bar. We opted to wait because I'm not one for bar seating. Keep in mind it's around 7:30ish on a Friday night so we expected a little wait. We decided to walk around for a bit since it was fairly nice out. Within about 20 mins we got the text that our table was ready. When we got back into the restaurant the host remembered us and quickly escorted us to our table. We looked over the menu and after a minute or 2 our server Lynn came over with water and started the ordering process. Of course I'm that person who asks my server for recommendations, but Lynn didn't seem to mind. I asked her what she liked, not what's popular and she pointed out somethings that I'll definitely be going back to try. We ordered the Imperial Oysters and soft shell crab for our appetizers and for our drinks, my boyfriend got the Grapefruit Crush and I got the Cherry Limeade Crush. Our drinks came out really quickly and were good. Mine was a little tart, but Lynn was nice enough to bring me an extra bit of sprite to help balance it. My boyfriend loved his because he loves grapefruit. The soft shell crab followed quickly and came out piping hot. It was good. Not as meaty as I was expecting but the flavor was good. Next came the Oysters. Again piping hot, fresh, and delicious. For our entrées, I went with the warm butter lobster roll and my boyfriend got the fish and chips. There wasn't a long wait between the courses which was nice just enough to cleanse your palate for the next thing. Our entrées came and we were both pleased. My lobster roll was yummy. The bun was toasted on the outside but still soft. The lobster was sweet, tender, and fresh (not fishy at all). It was a little on the dry side to me so I asked for extra butter on the side and dipping it in that sent me to the moon! It comes with chips, but I opted for fries instead ($2 uncharge). The fries were hot and delicious. My boyfriend said his fish and chips were really good and that he could drink a bottle of the vinegar aoili that it came with. Overall it was a great experience. Yum a dum dum! How can you not love a restaurant that sells lobster rolls?! My boyfriend and I came here this afternoon (Saturday) with a reservation at 2pm. I wasn't sure what to expect so I got a reservation just in case. When we arrived, there were only about 4 other tables so we would've been okay without the reservation. When we sat down our server recommended the Georgian Cheesebread so that's what we ordered. In all honesty, the bread was not my favorite. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE lover of cheese. This bread was just too much. When the server brought it to the table she mixed a large dollop of butter and the egg yolk in front of us. Don't get me wrong, it looked delicious but the bread was so thin it felt like eating straight cheese and butter and it made me feel a little sick before I even got my entree. For my entree I ordered the hot lobster roll with butter and fries instead of chips. I ordered the bread first which I didn't know was filled with butter and then the roll was also a ton of butter so this was for sure a heavy meal. The roll was completely filled with lobster so you definitely get your money's worth! The roll was so buttery and delicious but very soggy so it was falling apart as I was eating it. The fries were okay, a little over cooked, so I would go back and choose a different side next time, but not bad. Overall, I had a good experience there. The Georgian Cheesebread was way too much for me so I would suggest getting a different appetizer. However the roll was amazing and made a great meal leftover. I can never find a good lobster roll around metro Detroit so I would definitely come back for another one! read more

Hazel's as a restaurant is good. It has great food and waitstaff, but the events management team is awful. My wedding planner booked the place for our rehearsal dinner, but it took forever for them to get callbacks from anyone. Once that was all settled, I asked if I could be the main point of contact since my planner wouldn't be at the rehearsal dinner. At this point, it seemed like they must have said yes but not responded, because then neither my planner nor I could get into this portal they had us sign into. No matter, I had the emails anyway. However, when I tried to email them, multiple times, I got no response. I called and left messages, and I never got a callback. So, I went rogue and literally filled out a new event request form on the website. They responded the next day. Because I was going to be in town, I asked for a meeting so we can finally chat. We met up, I nonchalantly mentioned like, hey, so what happened with the communication? No apology, just something like "I didn't see it in my inbox". After that, they were good at responding, but it is extremely disappointing that it took me pretending to be a whole new person for them to talk to me. If you're thinking of this place for a rehearsal dinner spot, I highly discourage it. The price and the fact you can have a Welcome Event at the same place is appealing, but I would say looking back that it was not worth it. Overall, I think Hazel's should either improve its events business, hire new event staff, or cut the events side of the business all together and focus on its top notch restaurant. read more

We had the BEST time having dinner here~ Loved the casual atmosphere and our server "Lynn" was a joy too, extremely nice & accommodating. 5 of us had the Lobster Roll called the Connecticut" warm lobster wit butter on those brioche buns, Just flipping incredibly DELISH most people had the French fries but the smashed potatoes were far superior, IMO. The additional option of a cold Lobster Roll called the "Maine" is served on the same brooch roll and the lobster has a light mayonnaise dressing, also DEEELISH ~ A starter of Peel & Eat shrimp with cocktails was a nice start to our seafood adventure for sure. I don't know about anything else, but the food, the service, and the atmosphere made me HAPPY. That's a very hard emotion to quantify, so you won't get any hard stats from me. I went with a large group. We got turned away from another restaurant and we were scrambling for another. On very short notice, Hazel's accommodated us. This place is so so. We came here for our anniversary and it wasn't very busy. Sunday night around 8pm. Made a reservation that wasn't needed. Our waited asked us if we wanted a drink before saying hi or anything else. Kind of seemed like they wanted to get people in and out of there. We got three entrees to split. The lobster meal, the fried chicken meal and the shrimp, oysters, scallops, clams and fries to start. My fave part was the fried shrimp, oysters, clams and scallops. The chicken was a waiter rec and the lobster was horrible!!! It was orangey/red and rubbery. I thought it was prepared badly but the waiter said that was just because it was from Maine. My husband ate it but I was not happy with it. They didn't do anything about it. The waiter also tried to charge us extra for the bill as they charge you on the ipad and only showed the total. My husband asked for a breakdown and the bill ended up being $30 less... def beware. They didn't acknowledge we were celebrating anything. They also sat a family with kids right next to us when the restaurant was very empty. Pretty annoying. Would not recommend celebrating here until you are looking for something expensive yet very casual. Better options out there. read more

I learned about this place after winning a gift card from a charity auction that they generously donated. After looking at their website and menu, I learned that for a limited time they have lobster rolls (properly pronounced lobstah), and I only had a couple weeks to get them until they are in season next year. I ordered both hot and cold ones to compare, and they were both very good, tough to decide which one is better. Either you prefer warm with just butter, or cold with mayo. Both come on a grilled buttered bun. We had a side of lobstah bisque fries, which were fries with a cup of bisque you put on, if you get them to go. We also had an order of peel and eat shrimp cocktail, that they had already deveined. They were cooked to perfection. Looking forward to going back! read more

I had some errands to run on that side of town and decided to take advantage of the lobster pound menu. I'll always happily enjoy a lobster roll at any time but this time of year they ship the lobsters in from Maine, which makes these rolls DELICIOUS. I went to place my order and I was excited to see the "seafood picnic for 2" that, in addition to their delicious lobster rolls, included an appetizer sized whitefish dip, peel and eat shrimp, a side of coleslaw, and two tasty chocolate chip cookies for dessert. I also added an order of the lobster bisque for lunch the next day. Everything was PERFECT. I wish I had ordered a full sized order of the whitefish dip in particular. ("you messed up!" my husband said as he took a bite. "I know!" I wailed as I attempted to savor the delicious spread). The lobster rolls were perfect and the shrimp was succulent. Tons of food at a great price point, especially for food flown in overnight from another state. And the bisque? Holy cow. I got the smaller size and immediately regretting not getting a larger one for multiple meals. I screwed up x2. Pick up was extremely smooth, there's construction going on over there but you can still pull up to the curb and they'll come out to get your name. The picnic was packed up in a box and held up extremely well on my drive back to Ann Arbor, even though I forgot a cooler. I can't wait for my errand out that way so I can get another round! My 80-year old mom went to Hazel's for her wedding anniversary and sent me this review so I just have to post it on her behalf: Our dinner at Hazel's was good. I had crab cakes and a salad. Dad had a whole lobster with corn and potatoes and a roll. He had a wonderful time tearing the lobster apart with the little tool they brought him. But first, I must say that the interior of the place did not appeal to me. It was a huge room, very loud, with lots of tables covered with red-checkered tablecloths. There were tons of people, including families. The bar, however, was actually glamorous and if I were to go back there, it would be to sit at the bar and drink wine and watch people. Dad said that all of the seafood places in New England look like that room - big and loud, with long benches. There was a much more attractive side room - smaller, quieter, with more comfortable looking chairs. But it was filled up, so we were taken to a table in the middle of the barn room. Anyway, I ordered a scotch on the rocks and Dad asked for a gin martini and we were surprised to see how big the drinks were. My scotch was quite something. I dumped a lot of ice into it from my water glass, but it still packed a punch. We should have known better, but after that, we ordered a glass of wine to have with our dinners. I ate one of my crab cakes and some of the salad and was very full. I can't say that I really enjoyed the place, but my husband loved the lobster, so it was fine. However, after arriving home and eventually going to bed, things went wrong. I was in bed, in the dark, and I heard a commotion. Dad was trying to get into his pajama pants and got his feet all tangled up and lost his balance. So he grabbed the nightstand and the lamp fell over and came apart and Dad smacked the back on his head on the floor and took a bunch of skin off. It was easy to plan the event with Kat and Olivia - They helped us pick a menu and they even have custom cakes! The day went very smoothly thanks to our event host Chelsea's hard work and attention to detail. The space didn't feel closed off but we still had privacy. Our guests enjoyed the fried chicken and seafood platter for dinner. Several guests let us know how much they appreciated the staff's attentiveness and friendliness. I've never been to Hazel's but decided to stay for dinner after a Yelp event. I started with a "typical salad" and the imperial oysters. The salad was nice and fresh. The oysters were a bit fishy for my liking but flavorful. The fish and chips were great. The fish was piping hot and flaky. The malt vinegar aioli was a great change to your typical tarter sauce. This is my favorite spot for happy hour! They have half off all oysters and I always order a sampling of all of them. The east coast are usually smaller and clear er to eat while the west coast are bulkier and more difficult. They also have about 5 different "snacks" that are $7 each. And they have select drinks that are discounted as well. The interior is decorated like an undersea adventure and makes you want to eat seafood! I was so excited to take my husband here for date night after going before the holidays with a coworker. He loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in but that quickly changed as our original table was unavailable and moved to the back of the restaurant under a burnt out light. It took a long time for us to be acknowledged and offered drinks. Food service was more timely and the Georgian Cheese Bread was a hit. Our entrees left much to be desired. The fries tasted like something from the freezer aisle at Kroger. Fried cod was ok. Maybe it was a rough night but we felt forgotten which was a disappointment after I raved about this place. And this place has done it RIGHT - broad selection, tasty varieties from both east and west coast, plump juicy and flavorful. Not only that - Tuesday to Saturday, resident oyster shucker Ro is there doing quite literally the best prep work on oysters that I've witnessed. What do I always say - for me it's a combination of fresh food, ambiance and vibe, and this place has it all. When I go back I'll get the servers name and update this review - she was phenomenal - a level of service that could only be shown by people who love their jobs, and clearly Hazel's takes care of their own just as well as their customers. ROLL CALL! So aside from the 24 oysters (oh yes, 24) we also snacked on peel and eat shrimp, and house made chips and French onion dip. What can I tell you about the chips other than that they were everything you would want and expect from house made - still warm, perfectly crisp and seasoned. And for the shrimp? I think we settled on "one of the best we've ever had." Huge, cooked to perfection, possibly sprinkled with Old Bay Seasoning, which - game OVER. We had to order more. The verdict is in: 5 stars. This place is PHENOMENAL. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent drinks - everything is PERFECTION. I made reservations for the Saturday before Mother's Day as an early celebration. It was a little crowded but our party of 8 was seated comfortably. We came around 4pm, so we took advantage of the happy hour pricing for apps and drinks. Our waitress was so knowledgeable and attentive. She gave us pointers when we needed them and our food arrived promptly. Now to get to the important stuff - the FOOD. It comes piping hot and is served with this delicious bread that is crusty on the outside but warm and moist on the inside. We ate it up so fast! We also had the calamari (2 orders), clam strips, mussels and half pound of peel and eat shrimp. We devoured it all. After all the apps, I thought we'd be too full for entrees but NOPE. All our entrees were demolished, as well. I had the cod, my husband and BIL had the grilled fish tacos, my daughter shared the shrimp/snow crab steamed bucket with her cousins and my SIL had the fish burger. The steamed bucket was perfect for sharing and was well-seasoned. The cod was melt-in-your mouth delicious!! We each had dessert: the wrecking ball (a ball of vanilla ice cream with assorted toppings), vanilla chantilly cake with chocolate ganache, and peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Surprisingly, the peach cobbler was the winner! The other desserts just weren't as flavorful. The drinks were amazing and we each had about 2-3 orange crushes a piece and everyone said the sweet to alcohol ratio was perfect. Nice atmosphere and good food. Mostly a seafood restaurant but has some non-seafood dishes like filet and pork chops. Seemed a bit casual with the menu printed on the printed placement but I guess that's part of the draw, kind of like you're in a coastal, casual restaurant. Although casual, it's more of a nice restaurant, not a diner. Started out with the Potato chips and dip which was nice portion of chips with a thick, tasty homemade onion dip. Stone crab legs were large, somewhat fresh but yet very sweet. Comes with clarified butter, 2 hush puppies and 2 sides- I chose onion rings and coleslaw which were both very good, especially the onion rings hand battered with a seasoning in the batter, best onion rings I've had so far. The crab cakes were a little spicy for me, and the hush puppies dry. The atmosphere and chairs/tables (all hard wood seats with checkered tablecloths) felt a bit casual for the price you are paying. The taste was to die for with the crab cake sandwich tasting light but right and the lobster roll was just melting in your mouth. Finally had a chance to visit my friend's restaurant. It's everything I expected and then some. I ordered the hot lobster roll. It's served either hot or cold. The bun was perfectly toasted, not greasy and very light. Lobster chunks were delicious! It came with a side of kettle chips made in Traverse City. My husband and I shared the sandwich. The lobster bisque my husband ordered was perfect. It's almost a day later and he's still talking about it! The shrimp boil our friend ordered was also excellent. He had hush puppies with his order. I tried one and it was yummie! Surprise pieces of onion inside! Bonus! We will definitely be back again! Hats off to the staff who all did a great job too. We managed to make it here for the Lobster Takeover, and boy, am I glad we did! We sat right at the corner, and it was such a nice view. The service was totally on point, fantastic and attentive. The chowder was some of the best I've ever had. I had the warm lobster roll, my wife had the cold. I think there was at least a whole lobster in there! It was totally delicious and worth the cost. We decided to get a side of clam strips, it was immense. We will definitely be back for the normal menu, and you can bet we'll be there the next time they have the lobstah takeover! read more

Everything here tasted really good, but it was definitely overpriced. Looking at their menu, there is so much variety from all different parts of the world. Unfortunately, they had a Lobster Pound Takeover when we went - I had just returned from a vacation from Maine, so I had my fill of that stuff already. My coworkers and I decided to order from the limited selection of regular menu items they had available. For appetizers, we tried chips and homemade onion dip ($6) and Georgian cheese bread ($12). The dip was amazing - rich and creamy with a deep flavor from the caramelized onions throughout. The cheese bread was tasty, but heavy: in the center was a bunch of cheese, 1/2 a stick of butter, and a raw egg yolk the center that was mixed in/cooked in the hot cheese at the table. That bread probably should've costed $6, $8 tops... For my entree, I got the "Token Burger", which was a double patty burger with cheese, onion, and aioli. The flavor was delicious and the bun was hot and buttery. My only complaint was that I ordered it medium and it was basically well done. It cost $15, which was a bit high. I tried my coworker's fried fish sandwich. It was cooked perfectly - the cod was fresh and flaky and the batter was crispy. He got seasoned fries, which I regret not getting with my burger. The seasoning was not too salty and just added a little sweet contrast to the fries. This too was $15. My other coworker ordered the Caesar salad ($12). It was a huge salad and had the right amount of delicious Caesar dressing and Parmesan throughout. We started with crab cakes and Fresh oysters (Pickering and St. Simon) which were 1/2off tasted fresh and like the ocean. My choice was the the 1/2 soup (lobster bisque) and 1/2 salad Wedge. They also have Gluten-Free and Vegan options.... My sister who is both GF AND VG enjoyed Her "vegan gluten-free" sandwich. Then they was a non-seafood eater who had a blackened chicken sandwich and said it was delicious. The fish and chips were also out of this world crisp and thick cut fillet. Impressed with this place from start to finish. Originally, we had a party of 7 coming here for book club today. Due to random sicknesses and other things, it was down to 2 people today. I called twice to change the # on the reservation and one time got their voicemail, but they called me back like 2 minutes later. I chose this place specifically because they have potato pancakes, and I'm not a big egg person therefore I usually end up relegated to sweet dishes for brunch. However, I love potato pancakes, and theirs did not disappoint. They were very thick and came with homemade applesauce, including some cinnamon apple slices, as well as sour cream. My friend got a more traditional breakfast with potatoes, toast, and eggs, and she enjoyed hers as well. We both ordered apple juice and it came in a glass Martinelli's bottle and was poured into our glasses at the table, which was definitely extra but I enjoyed. Prices aren't too bad, especially for Birmingham also; my potato pancakes were $10 and the apple juice was $3. They also have some mimosas for 5 or $6 I believe. I see they do a happy hour as well so I may come back for that. Waitservice was good as well even though she was waiting on us plus quite a few larger parties. Loved it! We went during the lobster takeover and everything was cooked to perfection! The fresh oyster were delicious and refreshing. The grilled artichokes were perfectly smoky and served with melted butter and the most delicious garlic aïoli. The lobster was flavorful and tender. The decor is very clean and modern. I've never eaten an oyster so this was fun to try something totally new for me. I was grateful to be able to try the oysters and I must say they were pretty tasty, although I'd probably prefer mine cooked. I also had my first taste of scotch and found that very nice. I loved that the scotch had a real kick to it and it went down like smooth fire...loved it!. The location is ideal and so gorgeous this time of year. The entrance is something right out of a home and gardens magazine. Coming from Sterling Heights, MI - I went West on 15 mile crossed Woodward and made a left at the very first street/Peabody (it says 'Park' street on the right but is Peabody on the left. You can park in the garage a few feet down on the right. The service was some of the finest I have ever experienced and I was happy to tip accordingly. Thank you servers for your kind smiles and sharing your knowledge of the oysters and pairings. I must say my favorite part of the evening was digging into that amazing hot lobster sandwich​! Came here Friday night. We sat at the corner of the bar and had 6 people with us. They atmosphere was fun and open. Lots of high top tables, bar seating, and lower level tables. We were all in town to visit the area and I'm so glad we ended up here. This was a seafood win! Lots of lobster choices, chowders, bisques, crab, etc. I started off with the clam chowder. Was delicious and creamy. Lots of potatoes, clams, and bacon. I ordered the crab cake plate. It came with 2 crab cakes, whole red potatoes, half a corn on the cob, and 2 Hawaiian dinner rolls. I love crab cakes and these were so good. Lightly fried, soft center. Loved the pairings to go with it and it came with a creamy sauce for the crab cakes that tasted great. My BF had the blackened fish sandwich. I had to have a bite after he went on about it being so good. Wow, was that sandwich was delicious. The seasoning they used to blacken it really topped it off. His sandwich came with fries. The others I came with for chowder, crab cakes too, lobster bisque, the token burger, and a few other things I can't recall. All spoke wonders of their food. They make their lemonade in-house, homemade. This is awesome on its own, but even better for their drink selections. We came here to enjoy ourselves, as we hadn't been united for a few years. We were happy to see an extensive list of craft beers, cocktails, and wine lists. I had, along with others, their speciality of spiked lemonade. They had an option with tequila, one with vodka, and another option but I can't remember (see picture of menu). Those were delicious! I personally for the blueberry one with the lemonade, blueberry vodka, and blueberries. Tasty and light, especially on a hot night like that one. I also got the Tom Collins to try it out, since it was basically like an adult punch you would see at like a baby shower or something. (Only way I can describe that LOL). Anyways that was really great and sweet/tart. The lemony flavor went well with the meal I had with the crab cakes. My BF had local beer and a Jim Beam High Ball. The Jim Beam High ball was pretty cool. It's a station on its own that pours the jack along with tonic water that comes off its own line, making its super bubbly and crispy. She said it's a one of a kind machine they have. I took a specific picture of the menu that describes it more. Also thought it was cool how they stamp their ice. I snapped a picture of that too. Wait staff was great. Attentive and friendly. Ours managed all 6 of us and our orders with ease. Always makes the experience more enjoyable. Lastly, thought it was awesome that if you live in the area and you Uber/Lyft in, they will pay for your Uber/Lyft fair. This didn't apply for us, but super great they offer that! read more

A very good lobster roll both hot butter and cold mayo. I'm from Arizona so I don't know squat from lobster but Erica did a great job serving our party. Little did I know my car was dying a battery death in the parking structure so during the wait for AAA, Erica kept her eye on my wife and her friend while I sat in the car waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Not a great ending to a nice evening but Erica made it worthwhile. read more
