I actually like this restaurant and my favorite dish is the artichokes. Due to covid 19 I haven't been able to go to a restaurant here in Michigan for some time. My anniversary plan was to go eat there when they reopened. I called in and asked if I could make a reservation she advised that I should do so online via rezy. I did that and scheduled it for 7:30pm. I received an email confirmation for the reservation. We arrived at around 7:20pm and were informed that if we didn't have mask to wear to be seated at our table that we couldn't come in and to go to concierge to get some. We walked over to the concierge area to find out it was closed. We came back and were told too bad there isn't anything they can do and that it was in the email. I didn't think to read it as it just seemed to be a confirmation and when I called in I was never told anything. I completely understand them wanting everyone safe and I respect that. However I don't appreciate the way they handled it. We went across the way to Capital grill and they took us right in and we were treated amazing and even received an amazing desserts platter. I don't think the restaurant is a bad place to go and or the food is bad at all. I think it's just the way that this particular situation was handled wasn't very hospitable. read more

Grabbed a quick lunch with my sister and mom yesterday, sat at the bar where the older guy with the mustache greeted us and the blue eyed girl with glasses took our order.( I asked for names and am totally blanking) I had a couple questions for her and she recommended the crab cakes (which I am picky about) and they were phenomenal! My hubby had the Prime Rib which was very salty but delicious and perfectly cooked. The mac & cheese is very creamy & garlicky so if you are not in the mood for something super heavy beware! Mashed potatoes were decent, nothing special. I had the Whitefish special with lemon butter sauce and it was excellent. Let me start by saying I had a shyt day! I was in the hospital all night with a suicidal child that then got transferred to a mental facility where I spent a few more hours getting processed! I needed something good to eat as I hadn't eaten all day! Long story short I felt like I deserved a great meal but this review really isn't about the food (though good) this review is about my server Briana P. She was good to me in a very caring way! In a way that I needed! I didn't share with her my ordeal because I told her if I started talking I'd be crying! She told me if I needed her she'd sit across from me and we could kick it about my bad day and I believed she would have! I ordered my steak medium and it came to me well done! She offered to have it replaced but I informed her I was to hungry for that! She then offered me a dessert for the inconvenience! We went to J. Alexander's for a special occasion and we were not disappointed! The staff here are truly experts on the menu- they were able to provide us with some great food and drink recommendations that we loved. The spinach queso dip we had as an appetizer was amazing- my only complaint was that the portions were so large, I couldn't finish my entire meal. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but my boyfriend assured me that the fresh pressed coffee at the end of the meal was delicious as well. Hope to be back sometime soon! read more

I haven't been to J Alexander's in about 15 years, and I didn't remember much from the first time I went there. The atmosphere is very classy, upscale and chic. Loved the beautiful photos on the wall (taken by a Pulitzer prize winning photographer) and all the beautiful light fixtures. It was a little too dark for me though, they need to up the ambient lighting. The menu wasn't too expansive - steaks, salads, burgers, sandwiches and seafood. But I was surprised not to see any type of pasta outside of their "Not Your Ordinary" (NYO) Mac and Cheese. We ordered the Mexican Spinach Dip and chips for an appetizer, split a grilled chicken salad and ordered the Vegan Burger with fries and I had the Strip Steak with Mac and Cheese. Overall the meal was good. Nothing too stellar compared to the other restaurants around like Mortons Steakhouse. The dip was good, the steak was a little overcooked but it was our friend's birthday and she seemed to have enjoyed the meal. We also ordered Key Lime Pie to finish off our meal. Between all the food and a cocktail a piece our meal was close to $200. For what we ate I thought it was a bit overpriced. Ordered a bunch of food online and they gave us the chips but no artichoke dip. I called to let them know they forgot the dip and the manager proceeded to tell me that they did not forget anything that day because the managers packaged everything up (as if managers cannot possibly make mistakes). I then told her well your managers messed up because it's not in there she told me to come pick it up. I live 20 min away I'm not gonna drive back to get a lousy dip while my food gets cold. She basically tried to say I was lying about not getting the queso dip LOL they ended up refunding the amount and the reason being..."unsatisfied customer" I'll still come back but will def be checking my bag next time & u should too bcuz apparently they don't make mistakes. read more

The online ordering process was easy to use. My only complaint is when ordering for dine in you can get a discount for adding a salad to your meal. Online doesn't give the discount. Our food was ready in less than 30 minutes on a Saturday evening. The employee brought my food out fast and everything in the order was correct. Best Think I Ever Ate List: Carolina Crab Cakes My husband and I have been here many times, and we almost always get the same thing: The Caroline Crab Cakes and the Steak Maui. First, I love the ambience of J. Alexander's. It's a big restaurant, but it feels comforting and classy at the same time. The air is perfumed with a touch of wood smoke, hinting at wonderful grilled things. Sometimes, if we are feeling especially hungry, we order the Mexico City Spinach Con Queso appetizer. It's creamy cheesy goodness, with just a little heat. I sprinkle on a little of the accompanying pico de gallo on each queso coated chip, and it's a heavenly contrast. The Carolina Crab Cakes are the best I've ever tried! They have just enough filler to hold the crab together, and to give the tops a golden, crunchy crust. The crab itself is sweet and delicious. The crab cakes come with the most delightful shoestring fries. They are hot, crisp, salty, and delicious. Sometimes the fries come out a little lukewarm, and they need to be sent back for a fresh batch. The Steak Maui is everything you'd want from a steak teriyaki. Its sweet and salty flavor perfectly pairs with the rich ribeye. I get the shoestring fries with the steak as well. Not a big fan of the smashed potatoes that come with it. read more

Many people like this place and never been, finally my girl took me here and I thought it was "decent." Nothing special and nothing I would wait in line to eat at like a lot of other people do, but they did most things right here. I had prime rib and she had a steak Maui which is a marinated ribeye. She got a side of the "not your ordinary mac and cheese." Prime rib was good with decent flavor and good texture. Her ribeye was good also. Mac and cheese was decent also. We decided to eat here after shopping at the mall. This restaurant is located on the first level of the mall. The restaurant was pretty empty and we were thankful for a booth, as my sister's two kids were eating with us. The waitress came over and took our order. We ordered buttered noodles and a salad. My sister did order a side of fries as well for the kids to share. The waitress came out with the buttered noodles for the kids split in two plates as requested. She also brought out my food. My sister sat there waiting and waiting for her salad. The waitress was nowhere in sight and the restaurant was not busy in our area. My drink was empty as well. I had to ask her to refill it when my sister stopped her. She asked if she could bring out small plates for the kids to share. The waitress looked at her confused and said "to share the salad?" To which my sister replied "no.... the fries?" We could tell the waitress forgot about them as her eyes got wide and she said okay. She finally brought my sister's salad. The only issue is that with children it can be difficult to eat your meal separate. The kids were getting restless and wanted some salad because the fries were still not out. She finally got my drink and told us fresh fries were being made.... when the fries should have came out way earlier. The food was good, but there should have been more organization with the waitress. The food should come out together. Someone should not watch you eat your entire meal and still have a missing meal. The waitress should take into consideration that children are very impatient as well. Lastly, I should not have to ask a waitress to refill my drink when she sees it is empty and comes back with no new drink. Perhaps I will eat here again in the future. read more

So I went back here to use the gift certificate I received from the first visit I had. Today I feel like they redeemed themselves quite a bit. I had good service, no mess ups. And the food was on point. We started with calamari which was very tasty. And I followed up with a prime rib sandwich with Brussels sprouts. The sand which was pretty good with a spicy brown mustard, mozzarella cheese, and the sliced prime rib meat and brown gravy to dip it in. The brussel sprouts were okay, a little over salty and over burnt. But the winner in this whole meal was the CARROT CAKE!! Whoa....this is heavenly to say the least. The food is definitely not how I remember it. The quality was very sub par and we ended up just eating our appetizers and leaving. They were out of the signature artichoke appetizer, (the reason we made reservations). I will say the service of our waitress was amazing. I'm temporarily in a wheelchair and they did everything they could to accommodate me. However, I kept getting hit when servers would walk through and other guests. I have come to this location many times and each time has been a good experience! I would recommend making a reservation in advance or not going during peak dinner hours, because on a weekend evening the wait can be as long as 2 hours with a large crowd in the lobby. When I made my reservation on a Friday night for 6:15, I was seated within 10 minutes, which is perfect. The food is always delicious! My favorite thing to get is the burger with fries. The service is good however but could be a bit better. It can be hard to track down the waitress at times because they have so many runners, and they forgot to bring me extra pickles for my burger- which isn't a huge deal considering how busy it was, but just something to note. It can also get a bit pricey but its worth paying for because of the quality. Highly recommend the carrot cake- its incredible! read more

This restaurant is located in Somerset Mall. Husband and I have ate at this location and the Livonia location many times. Unfortunately, the quality of food at this location has seemed to go down as well as the service. We waited 30 minutes to be seated on a Saturday night. I ordered the filet and while that was good and cooked to my liking, the smashed potatoes were ice cold. Yuck! Luckily I asked for the béarnaise sauce on the side for the steak because it was so thick and full of garlic which would have been too much for the steak in my opinion. I would say I had a mild case of food poisoning after eating here as I was sweating and had a very upset stomach. Didn't eat anything else all day except here. Filet was $40+. Husband said his chicken fingers platter was just ok. He said the cole slaw was terrible way too much sauce and it was runny. Paid about $100 with tip and it wasn't worth it. Disappointed that we didn't eat at Brio or Capital Grille. read more

So many options here- depends what you're in the mood for. The chicken tenders and fries are amazing (make sure to get the bbq sauce), the salmon is healthy and fresh, the pasta soup is great and every single salad is tasty. My favorite salad is the Alex's salad. They also have an amazing turkey burger. My favorite appetizers are the queso dip and grilled artichokes. They will make the artichokes with olive oil instead of butter- just ask. I don't think I've had anything bad on the menu. The best thing of all- the carrot cake!!!
