Went to Stoney River last Friday--my experiences are usually good, but this one was exceptional. Our server, Mikayla, really showcased a strong understanding of the menu, gave great recommendations, and even upsold us right out of our food budget (in the best way ). She asked how I would like it cooked and I said medium well. The waitress then explained how a prime rib is prepared. I said GREAT please make mine medium well. My daughter ordered lamp chops. We ordered a Caesar salad which was very good. As we were enjoying our salad, conversation and the atmosphere, our entrees arrived. We were unable to finish our salads so that we could enjoy our lukewarm entrees. That is not the service of an upscale or a fine dining restaurant. That is the type of service you receive at a Coney Island. One of my daughter's lamb chops was raw inside. My prime rib came medium rare with lots of fat! There were two types of fat on this particular cut of meat. The inside fat was like two ping pong balls in the middle of the meat. Two clumps of fat. I should have taken a picture. The other fat was around the edges. I tasted a little bit when eating and couldn't believe what I tasted. I had my daughter taste it. The fat tasted as if it was soaked in brine. My daughter said it was like eating a teaspoon of salt. The meat was tender but not cooked how like it. Celebrated an anniversary here and was into the cozy vibe + mood lighting, and the bar area is cool too. Staff were nice and helpful. The steaks and sides were prepared well, while the garlic poppyseed bread rolls and ranch dressing on the house salad were a bit of a surprise (both tasted more sweet than anticipated but not in a negative way). Had to order deviled eggs, after 3 others said they'll enjoy, so I didn't eat all 6 halves. Delicious yumminess I happily paid for too ;) As for dinner, so many good choices! Enjoyed the meat loaf with mushroom sauce ( something I don't cook myself) and switched from mashed to baked potato. The sauce on the side ended up on having with every bite! I'm amazed the rating is not higher! Nice inside, typical for a steak house. We asked the server for recommendations and ordered three of them! Everything was excellent! We started with steak egg rolls. Very Yummy. For me though, the pecan crusted trout stole the show! First, it was huge! Enough for three meals. It was so light and flaky. I would never have thought of pairing honey mustard with fish, but it was sooo delicious! The green beans & mashed potatoes were plentiful, but standard. The atmosphere might be what keeps you coming back. Really really nice layout and overall good-looking interior. Felt nice and comfortable without seeming fancy. The bread we received were ball-shaped and honestly tasted like a donut hole. They were surprisingly sweet, and we were confused about that flavor. My wife and I felt the food was a bit salty (meatloaf and ribeye steak). My ribeye was cooked to my liking, but it was chewy like a NY strip. I was pretty confused since I was expecting a juicier cut with a more tender bite to it. Since we loved the ambiance so much, we plan to return for brunch so we can enjoy their atmosphere in the morning and hopefully have less salty food. I would have given them 5 stars. I went on a Sunday they were totally busy and I would say understaffed. It was a longggggggggggggg wait time for everything, although I was seated right away. it seemed like I waited an eternity for my server. Someone did come and get my drink order and I still waited even longer for my server. She was kind just swamped and I have great patience so I understand but I waited a long time to place my order and then to finally get my food. I think I got a ribeye or New York paired with scallop potatoes. I ordered it well done just because trying new steak houses can be shifty. I was impressed with the quality of the meat. It was prepared perfectly. It wasn't overcooked it was still juicy and tinder--and had a delicious flavor. The bread that comes before the meal is absolutely mouthwateringly delicious. I want to try the eggrolls the next time I go and hopefully the wait time won't be so ridiculous. Very cute bar area. The restrooms were clean. The restaurant is huge and the staff was polite and friendly. My server was incredibly kind too. She was just overwhelmed. It was just me however I was there for like two hours. My friend had a gift certificate for a dinner for two to this restaurant. My friend asked me to join her for dinner, and I went as I had never heard of this restaurant before, so I was interested in trying. I had glanced the menu beforehand and had in mind some appetizers that I was interested in ordering. Once we arrived to the restaurant, everything from the wait staff, to the ambiance was very nice. We were seated and our server (server name is Nester G) came right over to the table and immediately took our orders. What we didn't know, and to our pleasant surprise is that the gift certificate for two not only included two dinner entrees of choice, it included an appetizer, soup or salad, and dessert. I was totally shocked, in a great way! Especially since my friend explained as to the reason she received the gift certificate was due to an unpleasant experience at the restaurant in the past We ordered the Steak Rolls (appetizer), House Salad, Cedar Plank Salmon (Entree), 14 oz Ribeye (Entree), and Carrot Cake (Dessert). Everything was delicious! There was so much food for leftovers as well, as the portion size of the entrees were a nice size. And let's not talk about the massive size of the slice of carrot cake, it was huge enough to share some of the restaurant and take home for leftovers. I even went back a few days later to order a slice of carrot cake to go, that's how delicious the cake is! Well, Stoney River has won a new customer! I've been raving and sending pictures of the food to my other foodie friends to spread the word about the restaurant since dining there. I definitely plan to return to try more menu items! What an amazing experience ... from the time we were greeted and quickly seated (he made reservations). Our waiter Trey was extremely attentive and highly recommended certain dishes. We ultimately decided on Him: The Draper (Bulliet rye whiskey: Blood orange: honey: orange bitters) 14 oz Ribeye with adding Oscar style (lump crab, asparagus with béarnaise sauce) and garlic whipped potatoes. Me: The Matador (El mayor blanco tequila: lime: honey) Steak AU poiVre Filet medallions finished in a peppercorn and brandy cream demi glace. This place used to be one of my favorite places in Metro Detroit. Came in for some business work and meal while in town. I Come here so often. I honestly do. Usually 2x a month. On my most recent and which will be my last visit I Ordered a bone in ribeye $54. I come here because this place is not outrageous. Good food in the past. And it is not killing my bank account and food reimbursements if turned in. On this day i am by myself and time crunched. I got my appetizer. Turn it down. Had a drink. Did some work. My ribeye came out and immediately I saw a HUGE hair. Huge. I called the waitress over (who's hair it wasn't) and pointed it out. As she took it we together found a second one. I was incredibly kind. Forgiving. And they brought another steak. At no time did I eat the first steak. At no time did I demand or get upset. I get the bill and nothing is taken off. Not a percentage nothing. I ask to see the manager and she comes with a giant attitude as if I'm wrong for asking. At first because of her tone I thought she was blaming me for putting the hair there. Never an apology. The waitress did, but not the manger. She ends up taking off a single appetizer. Something? Yes. Not nearly enough in customer love to get me to come back again. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Food made me extremely sick causing vomiting. We previously had good experiences at Stoney River as we dined in three times previously but this time we did carry out and became sick a few hours later. My wife became nauseous with a lot of stomach gas and discomfort but I had it much worse as I vomited 7-8 times over a five hour period. The next day I contacted the restaurant and they were very nice and said they will look into it and have their risk management team get back to me. However, the risk management employee said since they were unable to identify any specific issues relating to other diners (dine in) that had the same food, all they would do was provide a $40 credit for a future visit. I told them that maybe it wasn't the food but instead an employee handling the carryout had dirty hands but it didn't really matter as it made me sick. I said the $40 credit would be acceptable if their restaurant messed up our order but it was completely unacceptable because I became extremely sick that night and it took several days for my stomach to recover. They have yet to do anything but I'll follow up here if they make things right. read more

So, let's start with the good--the ambiance was really cool in here, it's clean and well decorated, and the bar area had a really cool atmosphere (we sat in the main dining area, but walked through this area). Would definitely recommend this place for grabbing a drink. Now, here are the things we didn't like and the reasons we probably wouldn't recommend this place for a meal. I ordered the ribeye steak (I ordered it very rare and even gave a temp of 110 for clarity). Sadly, I basically got a hamburger that was well done through and through. The seasoning on the steak was good so I was able to get it down, but the chefs need some training on proper meat temping. The steak was rather thin for a ribeye, which I imagine was the reason it got overcooked. Second, one of the members of our party has dietary restrictions (vegan). Yes, I know steakhouses are not designed to be accommodating, but Stoney River puts this on their website: "From our vegan soups and salads to our plant-based entrees, we've got something for everyone. We take great care in ensuring that our vegan dishes are not only healthy and nutritious but also bursting with flavor. So whether you're a long-time vegan or just looking to try something new, be sure to check out our vegan menu options at your local Stoney River restaurant." When we got there, though, the waitress looked at us like we were crazy. There are no vegan soups, no vegan dishes, and no plant-based entrees as the website would lead you to believe. Sadly, this was the reason we chose this restaurant, so that was pretty disappointing. Lastly, our server was very nice and we could tell that she was trying, but she was a bit all over the place. Several parts of our order never got put in so we had to reorder and wait for those (they were also incorrect when they came out), half way through the meal the waitress tried to take my plate while I was still eating without checking to see if I was done (I had to grab the plate because I was chewing), and there were a handful of oddities in the whole process. Again, she was kind and was trying (and I got the vibe she might have been new), but it doesn't seem like the restaurant empowered her with the proper training to succeed. I don't fault her for any of this. To close on a good note, they did bring a free piece of chocolate cake for the birthday person in our party, which was very nice. I was between a 2 star and 3 star review, so if 2.5 existed, I would have given them that. All in all, good intentions, poor execution. We probably won't be coming back in the future. read more

Came here for a delayed Valentines Day dinner after wine tasting across the street at Cooper's Hawk(oops name drop) I had a taste for a steak and she had a taste for salmon. We enjoyed the nice size crab cakes for starters. The service was nice even when The Lady's mashed potatoes came out not too warm ( the only reason I didn't give 5 stars). I started with a house salad. It was excellent. How could a house salad be so good, I'm not really sure, it was chopped but the flavors came together very well. WOW! This restaurant is incredible from layout, decor, lighting, service, and FOOD! I'm really sad I didn't get any photos of our dishes, we were so starved we just devoured immediately! My brother gifted my partner and I a gift card here for Christmas and we ended up going on my birthday "Jan 19th". We arrived 10 mins before our reservation and were seated promptly. We were then greeted by our server Angela who made excellent recommendations and gave great conversation. We started our meal with a cold two hearted ale of course, the, shrimp cocktail, and calamari and were blown away with how crispy and flavorful the squid was and how ice cold and fresh the shrimp cocktail was! We also were given complimentary bread which I really don't know how to describe other than BOMB with a great whipped cinnamon sugar butter. We shared a wedge salad, and no joke, best wedge salad I've ever had and a great portion size for two. For entrees I chose that cowboy steak with Mac and cheese and my partner had the New York strip with the au gratin potatoes. The entrees were outstanding, steaks were cooked perfectly and I'm not exaggerating in any facet of this review. After, Angela brought us over a slice of chocolate cake for my birthday that was so decadent and moist and delicious. It reminded me of the chocolate cake from Matilda that Miss Trunchbull forced Bruce Bogtrotter to eat and it was the perfect way to end our meal. So if you love J Alexander's like I do then you will love their sister restaurant, Stoney River Steakhouse. They have a nice classy looking dining room but I like to sit at the bar. The bartenders double as servers and they do a great job of it. They have the same yummy lemon drop martini recipe as J Alex but you don't get the two for one sidecar here (minus a star for that!). The food is delicious. My favorites are the whiskey shrimp on country toast appetizer and the steak burger. The French onion soup and steak egg rolls are soooo good. I heard this restaurant was doing brunch on Sundays, so my friends and I decided to try it. We had a reservation, but we opted to sit the bar. This restaurant is definitely more on the upscale side, but you can wear casual attire. They had hooks for your purses at the bar. Our bartender/waiter was very attentive and suggesting items off the menu. I started with a breakfast martini, which was very good. I ordered the filet and eggs. It came with a whole-grain toast and potatoes. The filet was tender but the potatoes needed seasoning. Our waiter brought out biscuits with a butter and also a cherry jam, which was very good. Had a 5 star Christmas Eve dinner. Host was very friendly and seated us promptly at our reservation time. Our waitress was also friendly and did a good job. As for the food and drink, everything was delicious. We started with the calamari and it was a big hit. For entrees I had the pecan trout and it was very flavorful and well cooked. Two others got the steakhouse burger and also said it was very good and our other entree was the Nola shrimp. I especially enjoyed the cauliflower side and the creamy mashed potato's. Hard to start with bad news but, went here for happy hour and was told that the happy hour was only on the bar stools next to the bar. Even though I ordered from the happy hour menu I was still charged full price.
