I don't know what happened to this place. It used to be classy spot to have a meal and a drink. My wife and I wanted to have lunch after shopping, walked in and waited for someone to sit us. Hostess passed us by a few times without noticing us, never asked if we were helped. You could tell by the look on her face she was annoyed and wasn't friendly. When we asked if we had to make a reservation in order to be seated she gave us an irritated look as if we owed her money. We walked out and we will never eat here again although it used to be our favorite spot in Somerset mall. I wish I could give a rating of minus 1 star. read more

After a long week I didn't want to cook so I ordered the sirloin for family of 4. My husband picked it up and we were surprised to see it was cold and needed to be cooked. I called and realized that it was a "finish at home" meal. The manager was amazing. I told him that I didn't understand that from the menu and he said to keep the sirloin and come get a hot prime rib for 4. It was so freaking delicious and they were so kind. I didn't intentionally try to end up with 2 meals, but we will cook the sirloin tomorrow and it also looks really good. The whole team treated me beyond well and I am really grateful for that. I am NEVER disappointed when ordering or visiting this place. It is top notch in every way. Their menu is fantastic, and every dish is treated with as much respect and accuracy as the next. I came here for lunch yesterday. The place was packed which is always a good sign. Our wait was only about 15 minutes. They take your phone number so they can text you when the table is ready. I discovered that the restaurant is in open table app as well so next time I will use that to make the reservation. I opted for the soup and salad. I had the chicken tortilla soup and it was really good. They serve t in a big bowl so it can be shared as well. I chose the Alex's salad and it was delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and professional. They have plenty of nice entrees and daily specials so I have to come back here to try some. I have read in other Yelp reviews that they have excellent carrot cake. Next time I will leave some room for that. If you eat here your can park your car at the valet complimentary. read more

Went this weekend and I haven't been there in a while but I got to give 4 stars because of the service, their service used to be really good now I can say it's average. The food is good as always I recommend the Mexico City queso and the chicken tenders which I forgot the name it has on the menu. I do agree that they need a sitting area for people who wait because the hosts only told me we will "scream" for your name which I think they should have a beeper or something that the clients hear because it's kinda loud in there....I'll definitely come back and hopefully their service gets better, I don't expect the servers smile all the time but at least be nice. read more

Not my cup of tea but one of my wife's places to enjoy. I haven't been a fan of their menu since going here starting in 2004. Their fries, chicken tenders, and grilled artichokes are about all I care for here. For dessert I do enjoy the carrot cake. I don't just hand out 5 stars to a restaurant, especially to chain restaurants, but this is a complete exception and here's why: This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants - particularly because of the outstanding service and those semicircle booths are just too romantic to pass up if you want to sit close to someone special. You could pick something off the menu blindfolded and still love every bite. I promise! Full-fledged American food just the way you'd want it. This place makes everything from scratch and I love that. Their seasonal guacamole is better than any mexican restaurant's nearby, along with their queso. Don't pass it up! The salsa is simple and refreshing and always so fresh. Love the chicken tenders, their my guilty pleasure, and if your having a bad day they'll cheer you right up. The fries are thinly cut just how I like them, and instead of coleslaw I like the Mac n cheese! They let you substitute any side for one you'd prefer-the broccoli, mashed potatoes...anything is good if you don't care for fries. Every other entree I've gotten has been phenomenal as well-fish sandwich is pretty epic and the burger with tilamook cheddar is great! Everything is large portions-high quality meat and produce. #1REASON I COME BACK: I love how accommodating all the servers are. They definitely give you the kindest, quickest, most personable service possible. If you don't like something, if your food isn't cooked properly or doesn't taste right (which it rarely goes wrong here to begin with) they take care of it immediately no questions asked. They seem to thrive off a table with high expectations. At the turn of your head you'll look back and have a brand new drink refill, blink twice and you'll have a clean table with no crumbs or dirty plates. They really want you to have a clean, efficient, and wonderful meal that exceeds most people's standards. The servers are so attentive, like hawks gazing over the dining room, and they cater to your table as a team, so you will have multiple people assisting you throughout the meal, however they manage to do it in a way that isn't overbearing or annoying-just swift, helpful, and friendly. No other restaurant does this so superbly in the surrounding area, or should I say, NO OTHER restuarant in Michigan provides you with such excellent service. Very consistent, and very accommodating. After the pandemic they removed some of my favorite items like the crab cakes and calamari due to inflation. However the food is always consistent and as a fellow bar maid I have to shout out the two ladies behind the bar. Kind of shocked to be giving 4 stars to be honest. I wasn't expecting much, not that my perception was the food was going to be bad, but I just wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as we did. Cons: small bar, we couldn't find a place to sit. Once we finally did they sent us a text message that our table was ready. We cashed out and went to hostess table. Apparently that text was just telling us to make our way back, we had to wait another 10 minutes. Our waiter was less than friendly, his service was ok, but just not engaging at all. We got stuck at a bad table right in the path of all the waitstaff coming and going. Pros: honestly, everything else! My wife and I eat out a lot, often fine dining. We both had filets, they were very good! Cooked just right, melt in your mouth, good filets! Also had smashed potatoes and a Caesar salad. Salad had too much dressing but still good. We both walked away saying it was a very good meal and we would definitely come back soon. All this food plus a couple cocktails, for $100! We walked away very satisfied. You can valet right in front of the restaurant which is a nice touch. The valet was great, they kept our car right in front of the restaurant and remembered our name as we came out. *update. I've been going to this restaurant since at least 1996. I've never had bad service or a rude waitress until recently. I'll explain. My wife and I went there last Friday for lunch. We sat at the bar. The bartender, a brunette, seemed to work diligently , however did not smile. At all. She didn't seem friendly. I asked her if they had any wines that weren't on the menu, I was hoping to try something different , since they didn't have my favorite Foley Johnson wine. She bluntly replied they didn't do that , and whatever was on the list was what they had. It was kind of awkward ( it was as if she didn't have time for such an absurd question) I ended up not drinking. Fast forward to yesterday. I went to the bar , and noticed several opened bottles of wine. I asked this same bartender if they had anything available that wasn't on the menu. She rudely replied " you asked me that last time " and said no. I was taken aback by her rudeness. I told her never mind , and said I would sit in the main area. She was like oh ok. I chose to wait about 15-20 minutes for a table instead of being served by her. Anyways , as usual, the food was good. Docked 2 stars for rude service. read more

It's been some time since I last visited a good old fashion steak joint. I've never had a steak do me wrong and anyone who says they don't like steaks are silly and immature. J. Alexander's, in my opinion, serves one of the best steak sandwiches I've ever eaten: French Dip. I was out on a date tonight with my lovely lady friend and I was looking for something soft to eat, due to the fact I recently obtained braces. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!! But seriously, get Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken. It single-handedly is the best chicken tender dish I've had, and I've had many. I ended up at J Alexander's when a group of college friends wanted to meet up for dinner, and one of the guys in the gang suggested here. Given it's convenient location (right in Somerset Mall) and our friend's continued persistence that the food and atmosphere were great, we decided to give it a go. Our group ordered two appetizers (spinach dip and the calamari. Both were excellent and I would suggest ordering either if you typically like those types of dishes! I also ordered the "Capone" specialty cocktail, which was a boozy old fashion basically, but I was a fan as I am of most things containing Bourbon. In the group of 6 guys, each of us approaching 30 years old, 5 of us ordered the Crispy Chicken... and we're all glad we did. The tenders are fried perfectly and the sides (most got fries, I got slaw) were top notch. The only somewhat downfall to the experience was the service. Our server disappeared for lengths at times, and at the end of the meal it took one of us going to grab the hostess to find out waitress as we had all our cards ready to pay the check and we couldn't find her. Paris was our waitress and she was amazing, until the manager comped my food that is. I had an issue with my food (hair in it). We never had a manager come to the table after I found the hair. Paris proceeded to give me a bill for the full price of my steak. I asked the manager if she would discount the food and she did. Paris basically then avoided us and didn't even bring us our change. Some random person dropped it off. No goodnight, no have a nice night, no thank you. I had a nice experience here. I made reservations. We arrived and spoke to the hostess and were seated within 5 minutes. We valeted our car and found out that valet parking was complimentary. That was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the spinach dip as an appetizer. It was really good and the chips were warm. My husband ordered a Moscow Mule and he enjoyed it. I don't eat at chain restaurants that often, but appreciated this one. I wasn't sure why my sister was so insistent on eating here, but I could see why with the exception of the service here. It was as it has sounded always busy here. We waited an hour before we actually got a table and then waited longer until our waitress came. We also had to ask the hostess for silverware as there were no table settings. I think if they are this busy they need to hire more people, but it's ironic because they were pretty quick to clear the table. I ordered the cajun shrimp dish and it was surprisingly good. The coleslaw was really good, and I liked how the rice was prepared because it wasn't oily and it was flavored well with a spicyness that I enjoyed. Service was slow, rude, and awful! My family and I use to love this restaurant but after today we will NOT be returning. The whole dining experience was extremely disappointing and just terrible. Manager tried to even comp our whole bill, that's how bad it was but I refused because we're not those kind of people.
