I was lucky enough to enjoy TWO meals at J Alexander's this week. We were interviewing out of town applicants for a position and took both candidates to dinner while they were in Columbus. Both evenings, there were five of us in our party. We had reservations both evenings and were sated immediately upon arrival at the restaurant. Both evenings - the service was excellent. We had different waiters both evenings but both were excellent. The food was exceptional. Three of our group were there both evenings and the other 2 were different each evening. Between the 7 of us, we tried a variety of entress. Personally, the first night, I had griller pork tenderloing with a Thai "bang bang" sauce and mashed potatoes - EXCELLENT. The pork was so good I almost ordered it again on but 2nd visit but I refrained and opted for their Jalapeno crusted fish special - again with mashed potatoes. With the word "japapeno" in the name of the dish, I was hoping that it would have some "kick" and I wasn't disappointed. It was great. Others in our group tried the Steak 'N' Fries ("a french brasserie style steak with garlic, served with french fries"), Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter ("South Carolina low country recipe with french fries and cole slaw"), the New York Strip, Grilled Scottish Salmon and Slow Roasted Prime Rib. One of my colleagues ordered the grilled pork chops and was amazed at the size of the portion (a double pork chop) that she said was excellent. In fact, all of my friends reported their meals to be excellent. This is a great "fine dining" establishment. read more

We dined here for the first time and we were both so impressed with wonderful food. We had swordfish with couscous and broccoli and topped it off with warm carrot cake. We both loved the ambiance and the fact that we weren't sitting so close to others. If that wasn't awesome enough, the service was outstanding! Tracey was, hands down, one of the best servers we've ever had at any restaurant! She was so attentive and anticipated our every need, yet not annoying. your menu excellent and food cooked perfectl. my issue is , we had 7 people in our party and was refused service mind you, 6 are in their late 60's, one was 35 years old..they said new policy, but your menu says, in small print, 18% will be added to the bill for parties 6 or more. wouldn't even serve us at 2 tables, so 3 of our party went to BJ Brewhouse. no apologies, just said new policy, think they could use a better judgement. There was a group of us from 8-15 ppl each night. In town for car show. We stayed 5 nights 4 of 5 we ate dinner here. Our service everytime was above & beyond EXCELLENT! All I mean everything single dish every night was wonderful every time. That's is why we kept it simple kept going back bc service & food both were GREAT. read more

Server Patricia was great. I ordered the Steak and fries (frites) and Caesar salad. Salad was okay...No protein on it or anything... Steak was cooked beautifully but I was expecting wide steak fries... These were cold and tiny and like they'd be frozen and thrown in a deep fryer...Which is a little misleading on the menu when you write steak frites... Especially considering what you charge! Get the fries right and I'll return! (Oh, and two women were letting their kids run around the restaurant and bothering everyone and no one said anything... Which annoying...) read more

I had a MOST disappointing dining experience at J.Alexander's this evening. Cheyenna was our server. She greeted us and explained the menu. I had a glass of Pino Grigio, a very generous pour. My friend and I both ordered chicken PICCADO.. I was very unhappy with the taste of the entree. Cheyenna never came back and asked us if we were satisfied with our meals. My friend happened to like hers. The broccoli and mashed potatoes, even though they were served lukewarm, were palatable. When Cheyenna noticed that I had not eaten but a bite or two, she asked me if I wanted a takeout box. When I told her I could not eat the chicken, did not want a carryout box, she said I am sorry. I thought perhaps she would offer another entree and/or make an adjustment on my check. Neither happened. I thought it would have been a sign of good business to offer some kind of compensation. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income so I won't hurry back to J.Alexander's. read more

We normally go to the Easton location but decided to try this one. The menu is different from Easton. I wanted the Thai salad and they didn't have it. I wanted something a little spicy so I tried their bang bang pork . It was delicious. I got Alex salad to go with it for an extra charge. It came out a full portion and it was perfect but I had too much to eat. Our service was excellent. We had Chase. He brought us everything like extra water, extra ice, bar napkins,etc, that we had asked for with a pleasant attitude. He was efficient and helpful. The restaurant was full so it was a little noisy. I stopped by Redland's Grill for Sunday brunch. We tried their special vegetable sides, tomatoes and green beans. The tomatoes were simply sliced and served, while the green beans were overpowered by garlic and salt. You could feel the salt crunching on your teeth and it was far too much for a vegetable side. I tried the steak and eggs and it was pretty good. The steak was tender and cooked to medium (I ordered medium rare, but close enough). The fresh fruit and potatoes were also good. Service was on the slow side. It took a while for the food to arrive and we weren't proactively offered refills. The restaurant was also really dark and the soundtrack was 80s techno - not a standard choice for Sunday morning. read more

I've been to this place twice now and its been great both times! When you walk in you are presented with the hostess stand and the kitchen right behind it and the dining area off to the right. I love how open this restaurant is. I ordered the filet mignon rare with béarnaise and a baked potato. It came out looking so juicy and delicious. Needless to say, it was! I want to try other items on the menu, but you really can't beat the filet mignon. I'll be back to this restaurant again and I'll be trying something different this time. read more

This was my first time visiting this restaurant. Overall, it was a great experience. The service was a little slow, the seats hurt my back some, and just a personal preference, but my salad came with purple cabbage. I'm not a fan of it. What I did love were the croutons that made me think that I was eating deep-fried cake pieces. I mean, I could have taken a box of them home. I also had the delicious deviled eggs, I will for sure be back to try another dish. My friend had an auhi burger and said the rice Pillai was really good. Review is for this location only... we came here for dinner around 5:30 pm on a Thursday evening. It was already hopping! My friend and I were seated in the bar area, in one of the booths. Our server was friendly and got our order in. We got the fried shrimp appetizer to start, my friend got the roasted chicken, and I the pork chop... service was quick... our food came out in about 10-15 minutes but our dinners were first! Our server apologized and offered to bring our appetizer on the house. The pork chop was tasty and juicy. It came with the smashed potatoes (really good) and steamed broccoli. However my friend complained that his chicken was dry. The shrimp appetizer was okay. It was basically friend breaded shrimp served with tarter sauce. Not sure I would order that again! read more

Was in Columbus for a conference and stayed just north of their loop, Sunday evening. Found J. Alexander's and it was a good find. Started with a Spicy margarita and then had one of their large hamburgers. Ate at the bar and the bartenders were attentive and friendly. Horrible experience. It's worse than Applebees (no disrespect to them). The bartender got into a shouting match w a server while patrons were at the bar. Then all the patrons, except us, left. She avoided us the whole time. Then the other bartender shouts down the bar for our order. "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" come on man. read more

While the service and food were very good, I am very disappointed in the management. I made a reservation for 10 and the seating arrangement was unacceptable - we were seated a two tables quite far apart. I asked to have the adjacent table pulled over and was told (very rudely) that it was reserved. However, no one was seated at that table for the full 2 hours we were there. My company has large group lunches frequently and has never had an issue with seating. We will not be going back. Such a shame. read more

J. Alexander's is our go to place when we are celebrating and wanted a great meal. It's a little pricier than our normal weekend dinner so we usually save it for a birthday dinner. The wait staff is always helpful, the food is always great, and the atmosphere is very nice. We LOVE the steak rolls. Didn't get them this time cuz we were trying to cut some calories. We are always so full when we leave there. But they are SO GOOD. The Redlands salad is the best. We always get it with the champagne vinegarette. It's amazing. We usually split it and it's a good portion for two. And it comes with amazing warm, glazed croissants. For dinner, we LOVE the Steak Maui. It is so good and so tender and juicy and the glaze is amazing. Don't forget to get the carrot cake. This was a last-minute choice. We were in the area and didn't want to venture too far in the cold for dinner. We were looking for something a little nicer and stopped in without a reservation. It was a quiet Monday evening so they had no issue seating our party of 5 right away. You know how dining out at a lot of restaurants right now just doesn't feel that special? Not here. Although it was a bit by chance that we ended up here, it turned out to be a happy accident - it was a FANTASTIC meal, and reminded us why dining out is special. Martinis from the bar are of a good size to begin with, but they also arrive with a small carafe on ice to refill your glass. This detail set the tone for an excellent meal. We ordered a variety of items across our group including their Maui marinated steak (it got rave reviews), almond crusted trout (also rave reviews), Steak Frites (excellent reviews), and the veggie burger. The server was particularly excited about the veggie burger and for good reason - it was by far the best I've ever had. She said it's handmade in house every day and it shows. It comes with a huge pile of shoestring fries and absolutely hit the spot. We were quite full but the server brought us a plate of carrot cake on the house. OMG. The carrot cake alone is reason enough to come back. Service was exceptional throughout our meal. This ranks among one of the best meals we've had in a restaurant in the last several months. Overpriced, mediocre food and spotty service. The two stars are for the yummy salmon dip which was the highlight of the whole evening. They clearly are not used to (or fond of) having children there, as they seated us with two young kids in the bar. Awkward. The appetizers came out quickly to start and it all went downhill from there. We waited about 45 minutes for our entrees, and our server never once checked on us or acknowledged the wait. Worst service at a bar that I have ever had. We sat at the bar and it was very empty just us and 2 other people, it took forever to get a drink. I order the red headed Rita and it tasted like jalapeño. obviously they did not rinse out the shaker before making my drink, it was disgusting, also it was served in a crack class. All I can say get the prime rib Omgawwwd!!!!! There were 7 in our party on a Sunday afternoon and the service was excellent. The housemade cocktails took a little bit of time to arrive but were generous in pours and well worth the wait. I totally love that they provide a sidecar with each specialty cocktail! We ordered the appetizer steak rolls. Delicious in flavor, perfectly fried and the chimichurri sauce was an excellent accompaniment. The ahi tuna salad was well received, the shrimp appetizer, all entrees were piping hot and delicious. J Alexanders/Redlands Grill is known for their steaks and they do their prime rib exceptionally well! I went offline and ordered the steak Maui which is a teriyaki marinated steak. To me it overly seasoned and a very tough texture which I was not impressed with at $42. My server replaced it with the prime rib no questions asked and her apologies. That says a lot about a restaurant and of course we will be returning to a restaurant that has exceptional service and great food! read more

From start to finish J. Alexander's exceeded my expectations being my first time and a full house tonight. Having reservations and being seated promptly. To the attentive and personable waiter. The food was amazing. Steak Rolls with spicy ranch and the green sauce which I guess correctly Chimichurri. Texture and taste was spot on. Steak -N- Fries- Steak well done (my preference ) cooked perfectly not overcook, seasoned well, juicy and melted in my mouth. I'll pass on the shoestring fries and opt for a bake potato next time. Original Caesar Salad- Crisp Romaine, prefect dressing and, the warm honey buttered Croissant accompanied well Lastly the Chocolate cake which was suggested by the waiter, it was moist and rich in flavor very satisfying to end the meal with. read more

Desperately need a new grill man. Third time I've been here, ordered "rare push" and came out barely seared and soggy looking. Lukewarm. Shame...I've loved my experiences at J Alexander's in the past. Went to Marble Room up in Cleveland last night, exact same cut, exact same temp - perfect steak. Seems like I'm not the only one unsatisfied with the downward-trending quality of this restaurant. The steak was taken off our bill, complimentary dessert was offered but I declined (sadly...since I'm trying to cut some lbs). Update: forgot to mention the server was phenomenal! She refused to let us walk to our table without one on, so we left. We will now go to a restaurant that will allow us to function like normal human beings. I enjoyed this restaurant when I was a kid, so when I was in town this week, my family and I came here for a Thursday lunch. There was no wait for a table around 1pm. The prime rib was fantastic, tender and full of natural flavor; it was served with creamy horseradish that was not too spicy and well-seasoned mashed potatoes. The cajun trout daily special was fine. The cheeseburger on the children's menu seemed as large as an adult-sized portion but cost only $8 (by far the best deal of the dishes we ordered). I came here last night with my family for my mothers birthday dinner. The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice. It's very dark, quiet, and they have music going. We ordered a lot at this dinner and really enjoyed all of it. We ordered deviled eggs, salmon dip, and steak egg rolls for appetizers. The deviled eggs were pretty good and the salmon dip I would give 3 stars, it was just a little too fishy for my taste. I did not try the steak egg rolls as I don't eat meat but everyone loved them. I believe they were the favorite. The drinks that we ordered were the red haired Rita and Omg was that amazing. It was a tequila martini with pomegranate juice and each one came with a refill. It was strong but not too strong and delicious! For dinner I ordered the rattlesnake pasta without chicken and a small cesar salad to start. The salad was not small at all and delicious. The pasta was very good as well. The desserts that we ordered were the carrot cake and the chocolate cake. The chocolate was extremely sweet and chocolatey, so I wouldn't order if you don't like that. The carrot was good, I just wasn't expecting raisins and nuts in the cake. Don't have any complaints for this restaurant it was a very good experience with good service. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because I wasn't wowed off my seat but I would definitely recommend and will be coming back. read more

Our family really enjoys J. Alexanders. Currently our birthday stop for the extended family. Great Service, Good Steaks (Filets, and other Crab Cakes, Chicken entrees, Pork Loin Bang all tasty and you will not regret it. Also try the Steak Rolls appetizer - even make a dinner out of it. Honestly the service is the best part of JA. Make a reservation and and don't forget a dessert (Take home their carrot cake or finish it at the table with friends). The Grill is a little dark but good atmosphere and also a good date location! Note that JA is pricey, so assume you will average $25-$40 per person.
