It was dizzying to watch them work that hard! bar: My Bulleit Rye Manhattan ($17 as of 11/2025) was fantastic. I followed that with a Columbus Brewing Yellow Springs IPA ($8). Full bar with very impressive offerings. food: My pecan crusted chicken ($28) was amazing. Also the largest piece of trout I've ever received in a restaurant. I substituted their excellent orzo and wild rice for the coleslaw. details: The place was packed on a Friday night. I snagged a single seat at the bar, but reservations highly recommended. We always find this path to be a solid choice. We love the atmosphere and the Martini's. This time I had the steak burger and it was quite good and I loved my Alex salad and good loaded baked potato. My wife had the Salmon but prepared the way of the special of the day which was with a lemon butter and she loved it. Her broccoli was also excellent with lemon and parm. My kid got the Mac and cheese and it was excellent. One knock is that our service was slow from beginning to end. Our guy was working hard but he just had too many tables. Our friends wanted to meet at Redlands Grill, which I'd never heard of. Turns out it is: J. Alexander's. Or Redlands Grill By J. Alexander's. Or whatever, it's part of their corporate empire. The sign on the building says J. Alexander's. Tucked away in Crosswoods, plenty of parking, nice and dark inside, cozy seating. Loads of interesting things on the menu, plus some enticing specials. Our friends had been many times, and we ended up with their recommendations: chicken tenders for Sweetie, and the French dip for me. Loved both. Large portions of the mains, plus loads of crispy shoestring fries. I tried a bit of the chicken and it was very good. The French dip was great: excellent bun, loads of tender meat, horseradish and I think onions adding some flavor, plus the jus. I was a little concerned about Kid K finding something, but saw they had fries and mac so figured she was covered. But they do have a kid's menu, with all the usual suspects: tenders, mac, and more. She got buttered noodles, penne, and added feta and bacon. It looked great and she polished it off. Plus we got her broccoli, with cheese, and she ate, well, some of it (and will finish the rest at home.) Our friends liked their orders, tenders and the salmon special. We had a great time catching up. Slight negatives: some fatty bits on the French dip steak slices, not too bad but surprising at a place like this. And service was excellent most of the time, but oddly slow; I think they were short-handed. Again, a little surprising at an expensive place known for their service. My parents and I frequent this particular restaurant at least once a month right after church services. We would like to make reservations so that we are guaranteed a seat. I love the atmosphere and the overall ambience when we come there and all of the cooks, hostesses and even waitresses know us by first name. We usually make it for the Sunday brunch, and the food quality is always amazing. The Sunday brunch ends at 2 PM, but I can't remember what time it starts however, we do make it for the specialist that they have. Great experience with amazing food (best steak burger I've ever had). Our server was professional and helpful. The dark candlelit setting was a sexy esthetic, it was perfect for a celebratory dinner. Fries were crispy and delicious. I couldn't stop eating them. The rattlesnake pasta was very unique. I wasn't expecting it to have almost a Mexican flavor to it but boy was it delicious! As expected corporate dining experience. Mexico City Spinach con Queso Tortilla chips - I must have been hungry to order this. I'm nearly certain this is sold at Applebee's or similar venues. Chipotle's has better chips. The free ones offered at most Hispanic places are better. Literally most shelf-stable chips at your nearest grocer is better than this. We tried the Filet Mignon with Béarnaise (Center cut, loaded baked potato) and pork tenderloin (Grilled, cured in-house, Thai "Bang Bang" sauce, smashed potatoes). The sauces were heavy and salty. Someone reeducate the entire prep line! The warm carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is the only food item worth coming back for. read more

I have always been a big fan of J. Alexander's - I was there the night this location opened. A few nights ago, I was there with a group of friends. We were sat in the pub. I was about to go back to the host stand because we had been to our table for upwards of 15 minutes and no one had even so much looked at us. Our server materialized with a lame excuse of how they thought someone else was taking care of us. (I ask, is it really so much to check in on a table when you see that they do not even have water?) The server was quite brazen when she asked who made the reservation. Why does that matter? What a strange question. The server was non-attentive, at best. If you are not going to serve the wine, at least put it on the table so we can serve ourselves. Do not put it on a ledge behind the table. I do not know if there was too much ambient noise for the server, but they asked for almost every order to be repeated. (They confused a medium well for a medium rare in one case. The server did not repeat my order.) When the food arrived, the server stood tableside daring us to find any fault. As it happened, I ordered a medium rare steak - it arrived medium well. I did not say anything for fear of being chastised. I only ate a few bites of my steak not because it was over-cooked (I can forgive that in a busy restaurant), but because it was caked in salt. I understand seasoning a steak, but this was overkill. Another of the party ordered the salmon and it was far too over-cooked. The order was for medium, but it appeared very well done - nearly inedible. The stentorian-voiced server appeared as the table was finishing and made it clear they were expecting us to order dessert. Not, so much, the case. I did not see the bill, but I had seen the menu and I can do maths in my head. For the substandard, nay, awful, service we received and the quality of the food presented, it was not worth the price. It is as though they do not care about their clientele because they have established their name. I, for one, will never set foot in that establishment again. Perhaps this was a bad night, but the quality standards were severely lacking. read more

Wow! The service, the food, the atmosphere is all phenomenal. We stopped by this restaurant on a road trip and boy was it good. They seated us immediately without a reservation. I ordered a steak with baked mac and cheese. The steak was undercooked when it arrived but the waiter was back at the table before I could even call her! She immediately took it back to be corrected. This would definitely be a "staple" restaurant if we lived closer. And to top it off our waiter brought us a complementary carrot cake. It was warm, sweet, gooey perfection! We always have excellent service & food at this restaurant, but tonight they went above & beyond expectations. I had a 8oz fillet with a backed potato & only succeeded in eating 1/2 of the meal. My husband ate 1/2 of his ribs & potato, so the waitress packed our food to go. We forgot the food & drove back to retrieve it, however, it was already discarded. I told the waitress this was the 2nd time we had done this! She asked what we had, I told her & she asked if I minded waiting while the kitchen prepared us a portion of the food we had. First time at J. Alexander and it won't be the last, especially thanks to the excellent service from Grace. Our family went on a Friday night and the place was packed- what a great vibe. We had made an error in our reservation, but the hostess team was able to accommodate us quickly and without making us feel bad about our mistake. Our server, Grace, was patient with us and explained the menu/specials and made some great recommendations for the table based off what we shared we were looking for. A solid choice. Can't really go wrong with anything here. The food is incredible, get the artichokes and then anything that touches their grill. I don't know what kind of addictive drug they coat their grill with, but it works lol the Service 99/100 times has been spot on. Dined here with friends yesterday and it was fantastic from start to finish. I feel like I should mention that we all used to work here in college about twenty years ago so our standards are high and we are all very versed on the menu. Working here was like restaurant boot camp although we always talk about how it helped shape our work ethic and customer service skills in entirely different careers moving forward. The menu has not changed much which was a pleasant surprise because I was craving some spinach queso dip like you wouldn't believe. We obviously could not order everything on the menu but shared a prime rib sandwich, a veggie burger, and ahi tuna with fries, salad, couscous, and not your ordinary Mac and cheese. Everything was just as good as I remembered. Portion sizes are huge so there is no way we could have gotten more food but the one thing I had fomo over was the smashed potatoes. I was able to dip my fries in the creamy horseradish sauce which is a national treasure, but it's also insanity on the smashed potatoes as well. We also shared a piece of carrot cake which I highly recommend. Service was excellent, and our server was super friendly and humored us by allowing us to tell her about our shenanigans from "way back when" Ambiance is nice, with some updates but still the same dark classic vibe. First of all this is my favorite restaurant, but yesterday wasn't a good day I came in to celebrate my birthday and to enjoy New year eve dinner my waitress was not attentive to our table like I'm use too. With that being said she was steady talking to the table next to us for about 20 minutes while my family and I needed water refills etc. I can tell when she finally approached us in the beginning that it wasn't going to be a good day I told her I was celebrating my birthday she didn't even acknowledge and say Happy birthday or anything. But she was really friendly to the table across from us. Then at the end we had to wait for boxes and our check because she was to busy talking to the table across from us. After dinner then she ask if we want dessert I mind you I'm really familiar with this restaurant and know they give you a special treat for your birthday I had to ask if they still do and she said oh yes, so pretty much I had to beg for my own birthday treat. This is a tradition for me and my family to celebrate our individual birthdays and now I must reconsider our yearly tradition if this is the type of service we will receive for a top notch restaurant. read more

Went with my wife and daughter, we all ordered, I ordered a steak medium. Came to the table well done. Waiter acknowledged it was over cooked. Waited 25 minutes for another one to be cooked. Wife and daughter were done with their meals by the time I got my new steak. Told the waiter to box it for me. No acknowledgement, no apology, no offer for a discount. This was my first visit here in a very long time. We sat at the bar and had a few drinks with the calamari app. Everything was great. Our bartender was wonderful. I asked what their happy hour hours are and she said they do not have a happy hour. Hence, 4 stars vs 5. I love that they show all the drinks with prices up on the wall above the bar, as well as on the menu. We may return, because I fondly remember how good their food is. My first time at J. Alexander's. The place is wonderful. The dining area is extensive, and a large bar is just beyond the entrance. A second bar is on the side. We were seated quickly, and our server, Loretta, was spot on. The noise level was good so our party of four could talk. Jazz music softly filled the air. We ordered wine, then dinner. The salmon was delicious with wild rice. The steaks were cooked perfectly, and my double pork chop with apricot horseradish sauce was the best. The meat dishes came with smashed potatoes...lumpy mashed potatoes...enough to share, yet we all got them, so we took a lot home. I had the Rattlesnake Pasta ($22). Linguine and chicken with southwestern spices, and peppers. A deliciously creamy sauce with a little Cajun kick. One of my favorites. It was offered as a special today as the menu is more limited with options since COVID. My partner got the SLOW ROASTED PRIME RIB ($35) described as Aged Mid-Western beef served au jus with mashed potatoes. The potatoes are really good here and of course I had to have a bite. For dessert we split a piece of Carrot cake ($8). If you have never had it, go ahead and splurge. The icing on the warm delicious cake is delightful. I went on a Sunday at 2 PM, so not surprisingly there wasn't a greeter to meet me at the entrance. Lighting in the entire restaurant is pretty dim, so I spotted and asked for a specific table with better light and my request was accommodated. Amy in the bar area provided excellent service, made delicious drinks, and even asked for details regarding allergies when I removed a couple of items from my burger. How wonderful! The patty arrived a little salty, but otherwise delicious. Shoestring fries were perfectly crispy and had a softer and firmer mix. Yum! My comrade ordered salmon and it was prepared correctly and well seasoned. The dish was accompanied by rice and coleslaw. Staff at this restaurant are top notch and great conversationalists, especially considering our prior encounters. Drinks were awesome, food was great, and restrooms were clean. I was lucky enough to enjoy TWO meals at J Alexander's this week. We were interviewing out of town applicants for a position and took both candidates to dinner while they were in Columbus. Both evenings, there were five of us in our party. We had reservations both evenings and were sated immediately upon arrival at the restaurant. Both evenings - the service was excellent. We had different waiters both evenings but both were excellent. The food was exceptional. Three of our group were there both evenings and the other 2 were different each evening. Between the 7 of us, we tried a variety of entress. Personally, the first night, I had griller pork tenderloing with a Thai "bang bang" sauce and mashed potatoes - EXCELLENT. The pork was so good I almost ordered it again on but 2nd visit but I refrained and opted for their Jalapeno crusted fish special - again with mashed potatoes. With the word "japapeno" in the name of the dish, I was hoping that it would have some "kick" and I wasn't disappointed. It was great. Others in our group tried the Steak 'N' Fries ("a french brasserie style steak with garlic, served with french fries"), Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken Platter ("South Carolina low country recipe with french fries and cole slaw"), the New York Strip, Grilled Scottish Salmon and Slow Roasted Prime Rib. One of my colleagues ordered the grilled pork chops and was amazed at the size of the portion (a double pork chop) that she said was excellent.
