The time change on Sunday had my family ready for lunch by 10 AM. We made a trip through the grocery hoping to kill some time before most restaurants would open at 11. Once the clocks struck the magic hour we popped into J. Alexander's in Rookwood Commons. I had visited this location many years ago, but hadn't dined at any J. Alexander's since. We arrived to find the restaurant mostly deserted except for a couple of other early riser tables. We were immediately seated in a comfortable booth near the other parties. After a few minutes another employee came by to take our drink order and quickly dropped those off. Then again within a few more minutes our server was at our table ready to take our order. Since we were very hungry and with our soon to be two-year old son we knew exactly what we wanted. I went with the Veggie Burger and fries ($11). This was a thick made in-house patty filled with rice and even a touch of spice. Even though I typically enjoy black bean based burgers better, this one was still very good and worthy of ordering again. Plus the fries are the very thin shoestring variety that cook up so well and taste great. My wife ordered the Thai Kai salad ($15). The way the salad was piled high at first made it actually appear much smaller than it really was. Once she started digging into the dish it was obvious that this was more than she could eat in one sitting. I stole a few bites and have to say that this was a great salad, even though the price still seemed a little high. Though the menu made no mention to having kids selections, we asked our server anyway. She happily listed three of four items from the top of her head. We were torn between the grilled cheese or the chicken fingers, but ending up going with fingers and fries ($6). Our son really loved the fries and even took down nearly an entire piece of chicken. I stole a couple of bites and have to admit that the chicken fingers were right up there with some of my favorites. They could have used some dipping sauce, but I guess most kids wouldn't use that anyway. We had a very nice lunch at J. Alexander's despite it costing quite a bit more than we traditionally spend on lunch. The dinner menu looks even more expensive, so this restaurant may be best saved for special occasions. read more

I have been wanting to go here for years. Went about 18 years ago in Dayton. It's a little pricey but delicious. The filet mignon was amazing. Rotisserie chicken was good too. But for $40 bucks I would have hoped for more than one side. Wait staff seem to have a team effort approach as we had someone take empty plates that was not our waiter. read more

Nice place, semi-fancy yet reasonably priced. I had the Steak Maui w/ 'Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese' as a side. Yum! I asked for my steak medium rare and it was cooked exactly the way I wanted it. I think J Alexander's is a solid choice for date night. The atmosphere is intimate with the lights dimmed and being seated at a booth allows for a nice experience. The service is excellent and professional. Mr David and I usually come here for his birthday because here dessert is free on your birthday. The best part is that you get to pick whatever you want off the dessert menu and you get to enjoy a full size dessert. For free! And they even put a little candle and light it and make it feel special! On our latest visit we started with the queso dip. It's served with a side of fresh salsa that we always mix into the queso. The serving size is generous and it's pretty tasty! Mr David usually goes for the tried and true steak and fries. This is a strip steak topped with a dollop of herb butter and served with a huge portion of shoestring fries. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium and was seasoned really well. The fries were hot and crispy and had a nice seasoning on them as well. I usually order something different every time, and the chef's special of the night was filet kebabs served over a bed of rice. Oh. My. Word. The steak was incredible! I was surprised by the amount of little medallions included on the plate and the veggies (onions, peppers, zucchini) were delicious! The rice was also wonderful, it tasted like there was a sauce poured over it before serving and it was one of my favorite parts. J Alexander's has always been one of our favorite restaurants! We love the service, food and and ambiance. The service has always been great! Our wait staff is always attentive and kind. They don't bother you too much but we've never had to wait to find them. The food is my favorite! I've never had anything I didn't enjoy! My favorites are the crab cakes or steak Maui. The crab cakes have so much crab meat! It's fresh and hearty. The steak Maui is so flavorful! The seasoning and marinade they use is the best and you don't need any sauce for it. The ambiance is nice and classy. The dining room is dimly lit and you don't feel like you're on top of other guests. It's not too loud either. I'd recommend making a reservation to decrease your wait time. As well, Wednesday's they have $6 martinis which is a great deal because it comes with a side car! So it's like getting two martinis for the price of one. Come check this out for date night or just because. You won't be disappointed! read more

Everything was excellent; from the cilantro shrimp to the fried fish sandwich (which was red fish the day we went). The mac and cheese was also very decadent and tasty. J. Alexander's is one of those chains that takes the dining experience a step above that of a typical restaurant chain. It's comfortable, while still being a bit classy for a casual lunch or dinner. I've eaten here many times. It seems to be a go-to place for work lunches, at least for my group. I've never had a bad meal and some have been memorable. Now that said, my visits to J. Alexander's have spanned many years and I do not remember all the meals, but I recently had the Ahi Tuna Salad. It was so very, very good. The ahi tuna, served on the same plate, but separate from the salad, was delicious. I took just a bit of the tuna mixed with a forkful of salad and found myself making 'yummy' sound.s It was very good and light.. a nice combination. read more

It's been said timing is everything. Unfortunately, the timing of our meal last night at Redlands was terrible. The salads were served before the appetizers. The entree came when we had only eaten half the entree. It felt like they were pushing us to turn the table. But then, a second glass of wine took 15 minutes to show up, so dinner was almost finished. We thought it had just been forgotten...like an ordered side dish! Food was just OK. Salmon was very well-done...to the point of dryness. The fish of the evening, a pecan encrusted trout, got rave reviews. The Redlands salad was nice add on - fresh, nice portion, and more than just lettuce. Nice that they take reservations & ample parking. But for the price point, there are many other restaurants where they don't seem to just be pushing you through. read more

Where people in suits overpay for crummy food. I swear all the people with Audis, Beamers, and Lexi come directly here for lunch after selling off their collective taste buds. I've been reluctant to write this review because I'm here often, not at my choosing. I cannot figure out what keeps people coming back. The people I go with are picky eaters and routinely complain about the food not being done properly. That's at least partly their own fault, but you'd think the kitchen would figure it out once in a while. The execution on the meals is inconsistent and when you're paying a higher than average price, you have higher than average expectations. Aside from brunch I don't care for most of the food and the few things I do enjoy I've had often enough that I don't want them anymore. They could really stand to re-shuffle the menu and get rid of some of the bitter and the bland. Even the specials have gotten too repetitive with a daily offering of 6 kinds of fish and 1 kind of chicken, done with limited taste and often burnt until there's no taste at all except for carcinogens. Additionally, this is not a great place for lunch as most of the menu items are large meals in the $20+ range. Service is friendly, and recently has figured out what food goes where at the bar. In the past this has been a big problem as J. Alexander's thinks it's fancy for servers not to ask who had what. I wouldn't normally complain about this, but if they don't get it right 99% of the time, I'd rather have them ask than have to shuffle plates four times over. Bottom line, you can do better for your money and there are a lot of non-chains out there. read more

There is one spot under the cold air flow you don't want to sit. You'll get cold if you're in the middle area even on a hot summer day. Wonderful salads, great presentation, good flavor and texture. Gourmet done right. I always have a good time here. read more

J. Alexander's is our favorite restaurant. We celebrate all of our milestones and accomplishments there. Tomorrow is our 18th wedding anniversary so if course we chose J. Alexander's for our celebration dinner. And keep in mind that this was our first post Covid-19 restaurant visit. Since I made the reservation a week ago I'd been thinking about my favorite meal the Steak Maui and a side of broccoli. Well guess what they were out of them and didn't tell us until we ordered. Strike 1. My wife and I ordered salads and they were out of their croissants. Strike 2. I I begrudgingly ordered a salad and my wife had the ribs. All this time our server gave us terrible service. It was very slow. And considering the occupancy is 50% of what it used to be I just thought he would be more attentive. I asked for lemon wedges and finally received them about 30 minutes later. Strike 3. The ribs were just ok and my Thai Kai salad was good but when you're expecting steak a nice salad is kind of a letdown. The server then informed us we get a free dessert because it was our anniversary. Since the carrot cake is my favorite dessert on the planet I was happy. But when our bill came we were charged for it! Strike four! I am sensitive to the issues restaurants are having in this new day and age of restaurant dinibut we deserved better everything!This was truly the worst experience I've ever had at J Alexander's! WoW. Simply wow. I managed restaurants for over 23 years and love dining out when I can experience professional, non-pushy, anticipatory, friendly service, excellent ambiance, clean environment and, of course, excellent food. Well, Redlands Grill had all of this. I dislike reading poor reviews because of mistakes; everyone makes them. The key is HOW they handle them. We have been here two times, both excellent experiences. The last time we ordered a prime rib sandwich not realizing that is was basically a delmonico on a bun...our bad. When asking the server about it, it was zero problem. No attitude as occurs in so many places. Just a brief re-order, quick response and fast re-serv. This was handled perfectly! Great service! Pretty good food. We got a shrimp cocktail which was OUTSTANDING! Then we both got filet Oscar. One with a loaded potato and one with a Mac and cheese both with asparagus. Unfortunately, the steak was the worst part of the meal. I preferred the asparagus over the steak. It was rubbery and dry on the outside and not well seasoned. I would have gotten more apps if they had a bigger selection. The fact that everything else was good and the steak didn't make the top 40 Filets I have had was the reason for the low rating as they are known for their steaks. We just had one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We were in for lunch. My mother and I split the tuna burger special and a few sides -- beets, sweet potatoes, broccoli and the Mac and cheese. All were seasoned and prepared to perfection. I wasn't driving so I indulged in a Cindy's Lemon Drop -- loved it, not too sweet. Our server, Alexis, was helpful and delightful. Had a Holiday lunch here last week with 8 people. I have to say that I don't understand the rebranding. It still seemed like J. Alexander's to me. I am not sure what has changed that is driving the name change. the interior looked the same and the menu seemed similar. The person in our party who made the reservation said they still answer the phone J. Alexander's.Now on to the review. Our service was attentive during a very busy lunch period. I had the fish tacos and thought they were simply ok. I had a side salad that was as big as my head. The burgers that several of my coworkers had looked very good. Awesome experience! Went there for my daughters graduation celebration. Had a reservation for 630 however the graduation ended early. They gladly accommodate it our earlier time, even with over eight people in our party. It was my first experience there and I have to tell you that I was WOW'd!!!!! The food choices were amazing... There was something for everybody. We tried nearly all of the appetizers and there was not a disappointment in the bunch. And entrées were wonderful as well. My favorite was the calamari! Limited menu, kinda noisy, uncomfortable booths and the food was only so-so--especially in light of the steep prices. My swordfish "steak' was probably less than a half inch thick and a bit overdone. The carrot cake was good--but I did not like that they served it hot! WHO does that?? It arrived looking like a pile of glop. I asked them to replace it with a cold one. My fiance ordered the grilled chicken salad. The salad was presented cold, the chicken shredded and cold. Reminded us of a salad from McDonalds. We were thinking maybe one of the chefs worked there at one time.The Salmon dip appetizer was good. We have been together for 17 months, we dine on a regular basis and found our waitress near the bottom due to her lack of energy, no smile and obvious impatience. My steak maui was excellent. Came here for a business lunch and it was just okay. Very basic foods and nothing jumped off the menu as special. As a place that I imagine is busy for lunch, I do wish they had some healthier options that aren't just salads. I got the grilled salmon and while it was cooked well, it really lacked flavor. Love this place and I go often. The ONLY reason I don't give it five stars is because there is ALWAYS one group of low class, climber, loudmouths overcrowded into one booth causing a problem. EVERY SINGLE TIME I've been there there is at least one booth overcrowded into the aisle with many extra chairs which I'm pretty sure is a fire code problem. They are usually drunk and yelling at the top of their lungs. It's very off putting. The service is always wonderful and the food consistently awesome. I always enjoy my food and the service. I just really think the managers let too much get out of control at the expense of their other customers. read more

Went to dinner at 9 pm Friday. Had to ask for our waitress many times as she was very scarce. Was served our meal without utensils and again had to ask for assistance. Had planned to share a dessert after our steaks. Again waited and waited and eventually asked the bus boy to get our waitress. Then we were told that it was too late to order desert. Had we been waited on properly we would have been finished with our dessert before we were able to request our gal to take our order. Lastly same thing when needing a bag for our left overs. Per my text from Resy I called when I arrived so we could wait in the car. I was told I was 15 minutes early and to just come in at the time of my reservation. So we walk in (it's a below freezing cold night in Cincy) and we are told our table isn't ready and to go back to our car. They apologized and said we will buy you an appetizer. No big deal. Our table is ready 15 minutes later. Our sever didn't seem to be in a good mood (not sure if he thought we were a problem table because we got a comped appetizer) but we were overly friendly and ordered dinner. The first annoyance was they don't have a side salad so you get a huge plate of salad and a tiny cup of dressing. They no longer serve bread with their salad and the salad itself is a mix of lettuce and not my husband's favorite blend. The big problem came when my daughter bit into her halibut and it was full of Bones. We eat fish out often- we have had a bone here or there but not several 2-3 inch long bones in the first bite. We had to flag down the server who server apologized and went to whisk the plate away. We asked if she could eat her baked potato while he made her another dish (she didn't want to try the dish again) so she got the prime Rib sandwich . Since she had her baked potato I said she didn't need fries. I try to show him the vines when he went to take the plate and he said I said I am sorry that should not have happened and almost annoyed that I pointed it out. Then I notice the bottom of my Chardonnay is full of sediment and I didn't even bother to tell anyone. At this point I'm just ready to go home. Poor service major issues out of both the kitchen and bar and we will not be back. We were charged for the prime rib sandwich, which by the time it arrived she barely ate because everyone else was finished. We never complained about our late table. We didn't care if we were comped the appetizer. But if you serve my daughter a dish that she could choke on, you should take it off the bill and comp her meal. We tipped over 20% bc it's tough being in the restaurant industry right now and would never take our poor experience out on the server who probably had a bad night prior to us being seated. Unfortunately for J. Alexander's there are plenty of other restaurants we can drop $200 on for dinner and have much better atmosphere, service and food. read more

Annoyed and disappointed is an under statement for my visit to this J. Alexander's location. We visited on June 30, Saturday evening (after 9pm) and the restaurant was EMPTY! There was no wait for seating, maybe 10-15 other diners were there also. Our waitress. Katie, AWFUL...nice you lady, horrible server *insert side eye here* We ordered the spinach and queso app when we placed the drink order and the food order when the drinks were brought. I believe she forgot to enter the app order, when it arrives, me: I thought you forgot about it honestly, her: oh, we had some dishes break in the kitchen, me: I heard, but what does that have to do with our app coming out timely? *insert side eye* As expected our meals came a few minutes behind the app *insert heavy sigh* The waitress who brought our meals asked if we needed anything else, we asked for a refill of water, she never returned with the water. Katie finally comes to "check on our meal" we still are waiting on the water refill and ask to have the app bagged. Water finally arrives from a different waitress after another 5mn wait, she leaves the decanter, thank goodness! In the mean time Katie never checked back if anything additional was needed, when she finally returns I ask for the bill, total is 34 and some cents, I have a gift card for $30 and also give $20 for the balance and leave a tip. Katie returns and says: you have 1.58 left on the gift card *confused face look* me, thats not correct, how did you cash this out? Her: oh, I used the cash then the gift card, me: thats not right, gift card should be used first and the cash for the remaining balance, and the due me is still not correct, Her: I can bring the money back, me: yes, do that. *insert heavy sigh* Katie returns with $2.00 *insert blank stare* Me: where is the rest of my change, her: this is what's left from the bill; me: not from a $34 bill, where is the bill? Her: your total was $48 *insert pissed face* me: bring me the bill you first brought that list the total of $34, me examining the "new" bill, so you didn't include the app on the first bill and this is where the total difference is showing, her: i'm sorry, yeah that's it, I can take the app off if you want; me: no thanks and I don't believe you're sorry, you didn't think I'd notice the difference *insert steam rising from my head* Hindsight, I should have asked for a manager, this dining experience was horrible! J. Alexander's is a restaurants one expects a certain level of service for the money paid. As their website doesn't have an option to send an email for complaints/concerns, I have to post my grievance here. Everybody knows what J Alexander's is. It's your typical American chain steakhouse that specializes in steak appetizers, steak salads, and steak entrees such as the steak crusted steak. In the past I've been here from time to time and was always impressed with the quality of the food. The mac and cheese is just about perfect, the meat is always cooked correctly, and if you're privy to it they serve ridiculously money complimentary croissants with honey butter while you wait but it's upon request only! Having just given up meat for the well being of myself and my fellow animals, I thought the days of frequenting a steakhouse were over. However, a friend of mine informed me that J Alexander's not only has a vegan option, but apparently it's considered one of the best in the country. I'm referring to the Veggie Burger. This burger is made in house with rice, garbanzos, mushrooms, herbs, and beets. It's then grilled to order and served with a side of shoestring fries! Let me tell you something, for being a vegan burger this thing is full of vigor and excellent flavor. It's nice to see a restaurant that serves $30 steaks catering to the vegan crowd! Thanks J! So whether you're a carnivore, an herbivore, or a wild boar (ignore the boar reference, it's intended for my ex-girlfriend Jasmine only) I would recommend J Alexander's for a nice upscale dinner. read more

This is a tentative 3-star too. I went here a week ago with a group from work and the meal was free. I couldn't wait, because I had heard wonderful things about the place. The service was very friendly and very patient from what I'm guessing(some of our party was an hour late), so that was good. The person buying the meal was very gracious and bought us some chile con queso, which I thought was nice, but then I realized how nice it was because it was like $10! I couldn't believe it, because it turned out to be like any other version I've had, except it was served with some pretty dry pico. Other people were being polite when ordering, and did so modestly, but I said screw it and went with one of the specials of the day: Swordfish with pineapple salsa. It was like 23$ but I imagined it would be well worth it. When I got my plate, I got maybe a 5 oz cut of fish and a serving of shoestring fries. I knew the fries were coming, but I don't think it hit me til I got them that I was having fries and swordfish. No grilled vegetables, no rice? I'm sure I could have asked for it, but I think it all comes standard with fries. This needs rethought. The food was good, but not great by any means, and I was left very unsatisfied. I had to eat a coworkers order of fries to feel like I hadn't wasted the treat-lunch. It still didn't appease me. So the food is good, the service is good, but the prices were outrageous to me. That should have been no more than 15$. It felt like the place for young yuppies to go and say they spent $30 on an entree and weren't ashamed, only because their taste buds went haywire from all the Jaegerbombs they had in college. Had a gift card so my family decided to try this place out. Service was good. We had reservations so we got seated quickly. I ended up getting the steak maui and did not like it. It was overcooked, dry, and I didn't really like the sauce. The NYO mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were delicious. I tried the filet and NY Strip as well, and those steaks were better, and not overcooked. I think the issue with my steak was that it was thin. I also had the Alex salad which was decent (not as good as the Freddie at Precinct). Overall, it was almost $200 for 4 people (not even including drinks), but the quality of the food wasn't worth that price. I was going on a double date and this looked like the perfect place for us to get a nice steak for a somewhat reasonable price. I didn't care about the price at all but when the food came out and I tasted it, I was taken aback. The price I was paying was not worth it at all. The butter on the steak was terrible and the water didn't even have ice. I don't know if I am not bougie enough or what but it was not what I was expected.
