We love eating at the bar. All of the bartenders are nice but in particular we love when Scott is working. He feels like an old friend even though we don't know him outside of dining there. Always good service, generous drinks and consistently delicious food. With Covid, they have clear partitions between sets of bar stools so it feels safe. I visited Redlands hoping to find J Alexander's. It was not. The food quality was poor in my opinion. Even their prime rib, the J Alexander's signature dish from the past, was far below what they served years ago. My wife had the French Dip sandwich, which was salty and frankly not good at all. The service was slow and the servers seemed clueless. E.g., a server approached our table with dirty dishes in hand, then asked me if I was OK when she saw the obvious look of disbelief on my face. I figured that was going to make it slightly less flavorful than what I was used to. What I got was a dry, well done, bland steak. It reminded me of the overcooked, chewy roasts that my mom made throughout my childhood. The Mac n chs with it was fine. My daughter got the vegetarian burger. We both thought that was pretty good. Very happy with our meal and service last night. We were hoping for a good steak experience, something that's so hard to find anymore. We were not disappointed. Me: prime rib dinner; He: NY strip dinner. We shared the Redlands salad w blue cheese dressing and shared a side of broccoli. Delicious!! I had a classic martini which was a very generous and perfectly made dry martini. The Redlands salad was super fresh and tasty with their dressing plus we each got a smallish croissant that was slightly sweet. Very good! The prime rib (medium but on the rare side, exactly as requested) was gorgeous and thick and really delicious - great flavor; the au jus had a wonderful, rich flavor as well. Tasty and smooth mashed potatoes. He ordered his NY strip well done cuz he was afraid medium wouldn't be cooked enough (omg, ridiculous) and he admits that he should've ordered it medium because - apparently J Alexander knows how to make steak. Regardless, he ate the entire steak and mashed potatoes and extra french bread w butter, etc. etc. Wonderful meal and now we know that J Alexander is our go to place for good steak dinner. This was the first and last time I've visited this location. I ordered a medium rare $44 filet mignon entree that arrived raw in the middle. The server came back about the time my friend finished his meal. Her apology was mechanical and uncaring. I would expect way better service for the prices this restaurant charges for food. Very good meal but swordfish special was on the dry side. Prime rib was good but would be better with a crust. Haricut vertes was the best part of the meal - green beans were hot, crisp, and covered with just the right amount of garlic. Our waitress was adorable, attentive, and we were amazed that it was her first night on the job! Grilled artichokes were delicious and "the AG"said the ribs were great! We go here ALL THE TIME, but tonight I got a big hair in my side of broccoli, which I immediately shared with our server. She took it back to the kitchen and had it replated. The bill comes and there's no manager visiting, no discount -- like comping my meal. I give her my credit card and she comes back, and I say "I'm really surprised there was no discount or anything after I found a giant hair in my food." At this point, she says "Do you want a discount? I can take something off or offer you a free dessert." No. What's done is done. This is a training issue and reflects poorly on Redlands Grill. As I said it's not uncommon for us to go here a couple of times a month. I'm probably the Duke of this restaurant on Yelp. It will be a while before we return. Took my wife here for Valentine's day. Was able to use open table which is a life saver for that day. I like the inside of this place. It has nice appearance just a good look to it. You aren't crowded. Service was great and friendly and fast. We went because my wife loves the French dip sandwich and the ajus with it. I got the grilled chicken and was able to change from mashed potatoes to brussel sprouts. Would have gotten something else but am on a small diet at this time. I've been here twice, and the second time, I didn't realize I had been here before because someone referred to it by another name. That being said, this place offers a tremendous value for a diverse menu of upscale dining at a very reasonable price. Food: For an appetizer, I ordered a daily special of fried clams over fries. Clams were great, not chewy, and came served with fries and aioli. For my entree, I ordered the crab cakes--definitely heavy on the crab! Mostly large chunks of crab with minimal binders. It came with a generous serving of fries and coleslaw. My wife had the rattlesnake pasta, which is a generous portion of cheesy, spicy pasta. I tried the filet and NY strip as well, which were cooked as requested, and had a good seasoning rub. I think the steaks are a great value for the price Facilities: Located in Rookwood, this place has a large parking lot that does get packed at peak times. There is however additional parking available in the adjacent plaza. The restaurant itself is large, with a large bar area. The dining area is fairly open and large, with booths and tables not-too-closely packed together. It's dimly lit, and would be great for a date night, dinner with a family or even a work dinner. Service: Our server was great, getting our drink and appetizer orders as soon as we were seated. Great location with tons of shopping nearby and very convenient to the highway. I loved the whole atmosphere of this place. The lights were dimmed down in the evening and it felt very cozy for a night out with my man. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked. We both split a salad and the regular size was plenty for two. The queso spinach dip was so yummy we scrapped the bowl clean and wanted more. I got the ahi tuna and I finished every last bite. I was pleasantly surprised that they had several fish options which I love the most! They had a great selection of wine, beer, and cocktails as well. We had a really nice dinner tonight for my daughter's 18th birthday. (Party of 5) We wanted a nice experience and a great meal and J Alexander's did not disappoint. We have been there several times before so we knew we were in for a good night! I highly recommend going to this restaurant for style, food and the experience. One issue I took offense to was the way our waitress handled our bill and tip. I received the bill for roughly $175.00 and gave her my credit card. All was correct and the experience was good! When she came back with my receipt to fill out the tip and sign, they amount had changed from $175 to $212 which represented a 20-22% tip and still showed another line for additional tip. I originally was planning a higher tip because of the holiday and experience, but I was totally taken back by her charging my credit card for the tip she put in the charge.... I just left! As I stated 20% was normal for tip from me or better. In this case the waitress lost out on an additional $5 to $10 by filling it out herself! read more

We felt the sweet potatoes were good but nothing special. Finally, pumpkin pie was pretty standard and had a very thick crust-- not my preference but some may appreciate that.
