It had been a while since we dined at LBAB even though our last meal there was very very good. Some of the recent reviews were rather negative, but others were positive, so we decided to see for ourselves. SO glad we did. I can report that once again the food, wine, and service were all superior! I went with classics: the onion soup (savory and good to the last drop); the duck duo (the most well prepared duck I've eaten in a long time - delicious and memorable); and the pot de creme (this speaks for itself frankly haha - it was dark and decadent and a very nice finish to a fantastic meal). Service from Michael was top notch (great work Michael!), and the atmosphere was cozy but not confining, not too noisy for cross-table conversation, and of course clean and attractive. Very disappointing. Went with girlfriends for our Holiday white elephant and gourmet dinner tradition mid-December. 3 of 5 ordered the Lobster salad. A long time favorite. It was TERRIBLE. Wakame and bean sprouts? Are you serious? $32 wasted. All 3 of us could not believe it. I always get the beef tenderloin. I loved the french sauces. This time, the sauce was average and the serve it on top of fingerling (good) and a less than average potato salad (did not seem fresh). The frites were another favorite. Until that day. Soggy Not effort. The desserts. The special was something like graham crackers and marshmallows. The description alone was a turn off. They ruined Jean Roberts' restaurant. First clue, garage wasn't full. Second clue, the restaurant had plenty of empty tables. It is February 1st and I am still disappointed in myself for wasting $179 after tips. While we sipped our cocktails we were brought some French bread and butter to nibble on. It was quite good, both fresh and warm. The appetizers were awesome! My Mr. was researching best French restaurants in the Cincinnati area. He wanted to take me out for early Valentines dinner. This came up and of course it's owned by Jean-Robert. So you know I was looking forward to that! It's located at the Edgecliff building. You can park in front of the building (which is limited) or in the garage. The view from the restaurant is amazing. Overlooking the hills and homes of Cincy. The inside is very cozy and inviting. Love the cow theme! My Mr made reservations on a Saturday night. We were seated right away. Top notch service! Our server was excellent! Very detailed and down to earth. Menu is small yet everything looks delish! So hard to choose! We ended up ordering: Escargot Bernard Baudry Chinon Cabernet Franc Petite filet mignon (chef's special) Halibut (chef's special) Parfait (chef's special) All were specials for the night. I liked that Jean-Robert based the meals with The Cincinnati Bengals theme. Since they are playing the Super Bowl this year. Plus it gives us a reason to come back and try the other items on the menu. Wow! So we started off with the escargot. I was blown away! The garlic and lemon breading was amazing! It had great flavor. It paired well with the wine! We got our meals and I am in loss for words! The best filet mignon I've ever had because the sauce and the veggies that went with it. Comfort food at its best. It was like eating homemade roast beef but better. I had a taste of my Mr's Halibut and it was flaky and just melted in my mouth. I was even scraping the sauce on my bread! It was that good. It makes me very sad to write this review. I wanted the rebirth of this once great restaurant to be a big success. Unfortunately I ordered take out this evening and it was a disaster. The food as not what I ordered and what arrived was very disappointing. I called them to complain and they told me they really were not set up for take out. I then asked them why they took my order. Definitely a delicious experience in a beautiful space. We came close to sunset and had a lovely view of the river. There were quite a number of specials that the server ably rattled off- perhaps too many as we had a hard time remembering what ingredients went in which dish. It was little details like this that made the experience more of a 4.5 star experience instead of a 5 star one. Our table began with a special starter of short ribs, local grits, and shaved black truffles. It was beautifully sauced and flavorful with balanced truffle flavor. The plate was fully cleaned! We also had lobster Mac and cheese to share. Done in French style with silky sauce, any of the Mac and cheese choices would make a great main choice. My dinner was also one of the evening's specials- venison! I don't often have a chance for venison and it didn't disappoint. It was perfectly cooked with a nice sear. Sauces poured at the table were a nice touch. For dessert we had both the creme brûlée and chocolate pot de creme. Creme brûlée was good but standard. My wife says to me "don't be to hard on them. It's hard to get enough staff these days". So, for this reason, I will compromise with three stars. But I have to say, there were only three servers for the entire restaurant on a Friday night. Our server had 11 tables and she was scrambling like crazy to keep up. She poured our wine then left a $56.00 bottle of Rose on the table with no ice bucket. We had to ask, and she finally brought one 10 minutes later. We were seated at 7:38 for a 7:30 reservation and did not order our food until 8:20. We had the surf and turf tartare, which was very good, albeit a little vinegar forward. The crostini's accompanying the tartare were a little to thin to stand up the the weight of the tartar so they kept breaking. The carrot ginger soup was delicious! You could taste every ingredient...so well balanced. The halibut special on tomato risotto, with bites of perfectly cooked zucchini and summer squash, was lovely as well, however our server literally plopped the dish down and left our table with nothing said. We just looked at each other in astonishment. We have been to the old Table a few times, and wanted this experience to measure up to that, but disappointingly, it did not. Went here recently and boy, was I disappointed. The place could be great, but my first sign that I was going to be disappointed happened the moment we got there when it was clear that this place serves a specific type of clientele. But the service was fine, the cocktails were good (though over priced), and the ambiance was fine if not a bit "old" at times. Where it totally lost me was the food. For the prices they charged and based on the fact that I have eaten at other Jean-Robert restaurants and have eaten quality French food my entire life, this was not what French food is and can be. Without reflecting on the specific items on the menu, it appears that there was an effort to stay relevant but with poor execution and limited innovation. Bland, boring, and lacking fundamental taste and French spirit was what we got. Even the desserts had some execution problems and the salads were focused on looks that taste or how to construct the best bites was lost. It wasn't horrible, don't get me wrong. This restaurant is a treasure and checks all the boxes for what a great restaurant should be. No, it's not the fanciest restaurant. It's more of an upscale bistro. The cocktails are fortified, the wine list is not huge, but very acceptable and the menu is perfect! I was in town for a healthcare situation and I did not experiment. A bit of an unusual experience. This restaurant felt much more like a private club, or a residential community dining room, then a fine dining restaurant. The decor and building were certainly dated but the service was friendly and the food was good. I was on the hunt for a good French restaurant to take my lady to for Valentines Day weekend when I happened upon this one, and I'll tell you, I'm definitely glad I found it. One visit and it's already become a favorite date night dinner destination. The food is some of the most exquisite I've enjoyed in quite some time and my lady will absolutely say the same. I made reservations for Saturday night and we were seated as soon as we got there. The place isn't huge but has lots of great seating. The wine list is huge and the food menu is loaded with options for virtually everyone. They also have regular chef specials. Our server was excellent and told us about all the specials right away. We started with a bottle of Cabernet Franc and an order of escargots. My lady had never tried it before but she really liked it. The garlic sauce and breadcrumbs went amazing well with it all. As for our main courses, my lady went with a chef's special filet mignon, and I had a chef's special halibut... And both were amazing! Both were uniquely crafted and each bite was phenomenal. There wasn't a single element out of place and all the flavors worked in brilliant harmony with one another. When it was time for dessert, we couldn't resist, especially when our server mentioned a chef's special parfait with a Cincinnati Bengals theme (chocolate, vanilla, and orange layered and topped with three chocolate stripe cookies). It made a perfect finish to a truly wonderful dinner. After all this, my lady said this is her new favorite restaurant, and I have to agree. Had not been there in a few years, back when it was mostly about ground meats. Now it's a bit upscale French bistro, a format I generally love. The good - The wines by the glass were brilliantly chosen. Best list in town that I know of. Lobster bisque was quite good, entrees we ordered were well done if a little pricey for what they were. Not outrageous at all, just on the higher end for that sort of menu. Our server knew what he was doing - which utensils to provide and take away, expertly done. Closest to the Maisonette I have experienced since it closed. Now the not so good - hospitality. We got the impression that, given they are in a high rise condo building in a residential neighborhood that the majority of the diners were regulars, and we weren't in the club. The attentiveness suffered. We had long stretches with empty wine glasses and no check-ins from service. The food came out pretty slowly, which ordinarily I don't mind, as long as I have a glass to sip on and the conversation flows. After dessert we were still there finishing coffee and waters, paying the bills, maybe ten minutes, when the server came over and instructed us that they needed the table. On a Friday night getting near 8 PM I could understand the need had they been more crowded, but I looked around and saw five empty four tops, one two top and a six top that looked set for a reservation. No one was waiting . Maybe they have an 8 PM rush of reservations, I don't know. But it felt unnecessary and ungracious after a $500 table. We would have been gone shortly anyway. read more

We had escargot, the charcuterie, French onion soup, the Apple salad, the current filet special, crème brûlée, and chocolate mousse. Everything was absolutely delicious. These folks really know what they're doing. Our server, Gus, was a consummate professional. It's cold out now, so we're comfy inside, but the view outside looks incredible. And large enough for several parties or a few large groups. This patio is a Hidden gem! And extra star. I get the area is "off" and the location is absolutely odd. Awesome New Years Eve dinner! My wife and I had reservations for 7:30 and when we arrived there were families with children and groups of young and old filling the restaurant. We had a seat in the back with beautiful views of the city and the Christmas lights in the surrounding neighborhood. Throughout our meal, the service was very good and the atmosphere was energetic and fun. We started with snails which came in a paper envelope and a pair of scissors to open this delicious package. Jean Robert's escargot is always a subtly flavored dish whose substance lies in the sauce. Dip some bread in the bottom of the envelope and you will find unctiousness to please the hungry soul. The cocktail and wine list is short but every drink is reliably tasty. My wife had a bourbon cocktail and I had a glass of Bordeaux. The focus of the menu is beef with an emphasis on ground beef dishes. It's a French take on burgers so there are additions that create a delicious fare. I had beef with Marchand de Vin sauce, goat cheese, and portobello mushroom. It was perfectly prepared and served with frites. Although the fries came with aioli and ketchup, dipping the fries in the vin sauce was so fun that I felt like a kid again. My wife had salmon which also had a delicious sauce and came with frites. We each ordered a vegetable on the side to make believe that we were eating something healthy. The menu also included bechamel mac and cheese and other items that will put anyone's weight loss goals on hold for just one more night. We decided to order bread pudding to take with us and it was delicious. A great finish to a fun and lovely dining experience. We ordered 2 burgers plain for takeout almost an hour in advance and when I showed up I had to sit there for 15 mins. If it were a busy night I would completely understand but there were a total of 6 tables full and 2 people at the bar. Let me start by say saying that you can make this exact meal for two at your house for less than $10 & in fact I did all through college. That being said I had a great meal at Le Bar a Boeuf. I had a bison Boeuf with anchovy butter & blue cheese served with French fries and a cup of French Onion Soup. The French onion soup was , it had two pieces of soup logged bread submerged in it covered with a thick coating of cheese. The bison was cooked medium which was delightful, but a warning to future diners it seemed that they tend to cook on the rare side so you might want to order a level higher than you normally would. The bison was smothered in a rich melted blue cheese with two anchovies floating happily on top. All of this was nestled in a bead of crispy French fries. This place has a beautiful view & has a formal yet relaxed atmosphere that is great for any occasion. The menu is very similar to Frenchie Fresh, another Jean-Robert offering. For this dinner, I opted to try the ratatouille and spinach salad. I think the tricky thing here is that the portions are appropriate, but for the American eyeballs and tummy, it feels like a small amount with a big price tag. The food was delicious. The Spinach salad came with strawberries and a divine vinaigrette. I wish they had the ratatouille as a main entree dish and not just a side. All in all, the menu is a little light as far as flashy vegetarian dishes. So often, the finer restaurants tag on a truffle pasta or some other casserole style veggie as an entree to appease the herbivores, but Jean-Robert's menu doesn't even have a vegetarian entree, so it is up to the starters, salads, and sides to do the heavy lifting. So that's where they lose the star for me-it just doesn't have the same excitement vibe for me as perhaps it would for my omnivore compatriots, but I depending on how big a dent I want to put in the pocketbook, I can carve out a nice meal with the other parts of the menu. read more

Oh my, what a disappointment. Thank heavens that we were with good friends, otherwise we would have left after 15 minutes of waiting for just our drink orders. After 20 more minutes our food orders were taken. When my spinach salad came 20 minutes later, I should have sent it back. I think the dressing was room temperature water, not vinaigrette. After 4 bites of nothing but baby spinach leaves and feeling like a cow, I ceased that activity. When our entrees finally arrived an hour later, 2 out of 4 dinners were room temperature. What an adventure trying to locate the waiter (never was found) to get it reheated! Food looked as though it came out of a package and hamburgers were dry. When the waiter finally came to clear our plates 40 minutes after finishing eating, he brought a tray, placed it on the table, reached in front of each person to get their plates and proceeded to stack the plates and dishes on the tray!!! When server showed up we did give feedback... and manager visited... she was kind and listened, comped the meal and offered a dessert. Which I might have gotten but it took server more than 10 minutes to show up... again. At that point, I just wanted to go home. We have eaten at other Jean-Robert's properties.
