My friend and I were shopping at Findlay Market on a Wednesday in early October and popped in to see what they were serving for their Lunch Tray Special. I only knew about these lunches from following them on social media. Each week they serve a different lunch Weds.-Fri. at the bar for $19. It's enough food that we both took a bit home. The ambiance is bright, and you can't miss seeing all the of the salt and pepper shakers in the display case - what a hoot! We had chicken breast over rich mashed potatoes, a yummy quinoa salad, homeade tomato soup, and a frozen strawberry puff pastry item. Everything was delicious (although the dessert was a bit odd), and for the price, it was steal for lunch. We will be back to try more! As a bonus, while we were there, Molly Wellman was consulting with the bartender. We tried her Cincinnati Gin and she explained the history of how she chose the recipe and went into a deep dive of the history of distilling in Cincinnati. So we had a very educational lunch! Came here for brunch, and boy, I was not disappointed. Order their duo salmon with cream of chicken soup, pistachio croissant and their croque madame. Was never really a fan of cream of chicken as they usually tasted like the can ones. But was craving for a soup that day, and I was glad I ordered it! Saturday brunch reservations for 2 with one of my good friends. She had the Caesar salad and I had the flat croissant with Swiss and mushrooms, side of Caesar salad and a bowl of French onion soup. We both had the French artisanal lemonade which was tart and delicious! My only sad note was the French onion soup- it was nice and fresh.... A little too fresh without the onions caramelizing down into that sweet onion thick brown goodness. It was an onion soup with bread and cheese instead. So watery thin I thought at first the broth was oil floating to the top. Otherwise the service was excellent without the staff getting pushy when we stayed and chatted after the 3pm close time. I did not enjoy chomping on a piece of shell though :) The macaroni is not like macaroni we are used to. Not the right noodles and it has mushrooms and something else in it. Lovely cafe in the heart of OTR and across the street from Findlay Market. I have been here a few times and have always ordered the same thing because it HAD always been fantastic. While the establishment looked mostly the same and the wait staff was still friendly since my last visit two years ago, I noticed a decline in the quality of my food. The bowl of "Creamy Chicken Soup" was completely off the usual mark. It was very watery as if someone had added more chicken broth or water to make the pot go further. I thought that perhaps this was a new recipe and so disappointedly continued to eat the soup. The flavor was still good, it just lacked the consistency of any type of "creamy" soup as the menu name states. After paying the bill I asked the waitresses if there was a new recipe or chef since the soup seemed to be so off point from years ago. She said that she also noticed that it was watery and actually thought it was a different soup that day, but in fact, it was just a watery day. If she had noticed that the soup seemed off from the normal consistency, then she should have warned us of the change or suggested the French Onion soup instead. The Quiche seemed to be a bit overcooked. While the egg portion seemed fine, the crust was very brown indicating a pinch too long in the oven. Portion size was very big however. The French Crust Cafe and Bistro is located in the Findlay Market area. Is is one of the late Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel's restaurants. We loved his downtown restaurant (Jean-Robert's Table) which closed at the end of 2020 so we were really excited to eat here. We found parking in one of the close by lots and paid via the parking app. The cafe is a cute, blue, corner bistro, with windows. The inside is lovely and take a look around at the detail as it is decorated with a neat chandelier and ornamental roosters, chickens, pigs around the dining area. For food, I started with a Chocolate Almond Croissant and my partner with the Chocolate Croissant, which we both enjoyed. It was like starting with dessert. Next we had a cup of chicken wild rice and much room soup, which is one of their signature items and is a must. So good. For the main dish I went with the Quiche Du Jour, which was had chicken, asparagus, and garlic. My partner had the Quiche Lorraine with ham, Gruyere, and leeks . Both were perfect and I really enjoyed the special. Helpful tip - gab a reservation through Open Table or google to ensure you have a table. We had a little issue with the hostess trying to get seated without a reservation so I hopped on the app while we were talking and book a table 15 mins out (next available) and said I had one but we were early. We were able to visit this restaurant twice this weekend. It was the only restaurant we knew would be open for Easter. So we invited my daughter to join us and we made an afternoon of it. We were greeted and seated promptly. The restaurant was in an old renovated building--which added to its charm. The walls echoed a very French theme with dozens of French vintage movie posters. We started with a glass of Champagne and my daughter had a latte. Our entrees consisted of the croque madam which my husband ordered, scallop and seafood vol-au-vent with wine cream, cblt which my daughter had. Each one of us clean our plates. No boxes! Does that tell you anything? Now yesterday, we had light meals. I tried the quiche with Gruyere, leeks and ham, which was substantial. However, I was a bit disappointed when I tasted it. The ingredients floated to the top of the quiche and left a very gelatinous egg mixture on the bottom. The crust was very dark --almost burned looking. If that is the way a French quiche is executed--I think I will pass on it next time. All-in-all, I still love the place. We went there for lunch today, service was slow, the waiter "curt" like it was a bother! Ordered 5 Eggs Benedict which were a bait and switch. We got Eggs Florentine which is an eggs Benedict without the meat! Was the ham forgotten, is it a misprint or worse yet, do they not know what an eggs Benedict is? The coffee was excellent as well- the drip was so bold, and the cappuccino had the perfect amount of foam. I did find the food lacking a bit, though- I ordered the croissant sandwich, and either I got a day-old croissant, or it was an off day, because the pastry itself was stale, tough, and had no crunch on the exterior. I took half of a bite and was done with it, so just ate the eggs inside with a fork. My friends seemed to enjoy their food, though! I couldn't make a reservation so we went there anyway just to try with our son and his boyfriend. No seating was available so the hostess asked if we'd like to sit in the cafe - of Course! This location was awesome! I went with my cousins and aunt and uncle when I was visiting Ohio, it's on one side of the findley market. Look for the large metal rooster outside, the inside is great with a bunch of French adds and art hanging up. The staff is great! Very friendly and attentive but not overbearing which I enjoy. The menu had fun options and I ended up going with the eggs Benedict it's my favorite breakfast meal and the one I had here didn't disappoint. The texture of it was creamy and not rubbery and the crust was buttery and crisp. The Brie, avocado and tomato croissant was pretty simple. It maybe could have been elevated by having sliced avocado (instead of smashed paste), and perhaps the whole thing could've been toasted? Maybe some herbs ? That's my take on it anyway. Going in I saw a champage glass with a lemon curl and thought I need that in my life. It also has a sugar cube, and goes down way to easy if you get my drift. I had the most delicious open faced sandwich with heirloom tomato and brie on a crossant. However, I was told the soup of the day was Tomato, and it turned into asparagus potato. Yep, same soup I didnt' like last time. My dining partner heard tomato as well and ordered it, but the waiter said "no...I told you potato" Wrong. Still, the rest made up for the soup.
