San Francisco, I love you but you need to stop it with the ridiculously pretentious, yipster "food trends":
$125 to nosh on expired veggies in a garbage dumpster: http://bit.ly/25Q2K7n?
$100 to drink a Soylent drink in an empty, white room: http://bit.ly/2a1vTXw?
The latter event had nearly 3x the amount of reservations request than they had seats.
That is batsh*t crazy.
Do people that attend these events use $1 bills to wipe their ( | )?
Lately, I've been spending the weekends in the Peninsula and the South Bay. And, they know how to keep the food trends simple, wholesome, and most importantly, affordable.
Man Jose's ice cream game is on point: Popbar, Recess, and now Icicles (currently in soft opening phase). Icicles' specialty is made to order, Thai-style ice cream rolls. This latest dessert trend originated from the streets of Thailand and has made its way to NYC, LA, and now the Bay Area. I believe Icicles is the first Bay Area shop who specializes in these ice cream rolls (but Dean S. gave me a heads up that Snowflake in SJ also offers it).
Order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. There's one size ($6.50) and 10 flavors: vanilla, thai tea, berry, avocado, oreo, pb&j, strawberry, nutella, matcha, and one flavor of the day (non-dairy). Toppings: rice crispy treats, cereal, fresh fruit, mochi, roasted marshmallow, nuts, etc. and drizzles: caramel, chocolate, condensed milk, etc are unlimited! There's also a DIY toppings bar with various cereals, nuts, and candies. Keep it simple, you want to be able to taste the ice cream.
When your name is called, watch your sweet treat made before your eyes: a milk, cream, eggs and sugar mixture is poured onto an ice plate, then is mixed, squished, flattened, rolled out, and topped with sweets, fruits, and drizzled with your chosen syrup(s).
I ordered the Strawberry Fantasy: strawberry ice cream rolls w/ strawberry, banana, roasted marshmallow, graham crackers, condensed milk ($6.50): http://bit.ly/2a1Zsa9. Loved the texture which reminded me of thick sheets of Taiwanese shaved snow. It was super creamy and I loved that everything tasted so natural and wasn't cloyingly sweet. The strawberry and banana were fresh and the crushed graham crackers gave a nice crunch. They torch the marshmallow to order so it's warm and gooey when you bite into it.
The price may seem steep but everything is made to order with high quality ingredients and fresh fruit so it was worth it.
Since it was hot, I had to share some with Tater Tot: http://bit.ly/2anq2s0. Just a little though since dairy gives dogs the Hershey squirts.
DO come with patience! I was 4th in line and it took 20 minutes just to have my named called (lots of people were waiting around) and another 5 minutes to make my order and get the toppings.
Limited seating with several stools inside and two benches outside.
Icicles is currently in a soft opening phase but here's some feedback to Management:
(1) The ordering process is confusing. I walked into a clusters of customers and had to ask multiple people where the line started. They should rope off and designate a line for ordering and an area for waiting. Also, a numbering system would be beneficial since a first name basis for orders caused some confusion. "Mike, order for Mike!" *3 dudes raise their hands*
(2) Lack of consistency in sizes. Some cups were overflowing with tall ice cream rolls while others weren't.
(3) Turn the AC on please. It was 82 degrees outside and it was like a sauna inside the shop.
(4) Bottled water is their only drink option (my friend wanted juice). It would be nice to offer other options like juices and sodas.
I fell in love with Recess last week and now Icicles. Now, if they could open a location in SF! =P read more
