    Vietnamese coffee time
    Daniel M.

This restaurant never disappoints. We order the small pho, an order of summer rolls and rice crepes with ground pork. The food came all out at the same time, the pho is problem kne of the best in the area. You can tell they take time to make the broth, very well seasoned, clear broth. The slices of beef are thin but just perfect for the hot broth to slightly cook the beef. The summer rola come with a peanut sauce that is nust perfect with a savory flavor and sufficient consistency to dip the rolls and the sauce cljngs on to the rice wrapper. The servers are very quick to take the order, expedite and serve fast. The rice crepes stuffed with ground pork were very good, light but savory dish if you are not very hungry. Overall a great experience. Parking was extremely difficult, i had to leave my car over at woodside avenue about 3 blicks away because of the construction they are doing nearby the restaurant.

Cuisine: 6 Service: 6 Decor: 5 Value: 8 Overall: 6 First, I'll start by saying that I'm happy to see a long time restaurant like Thai Son come back after being missing in action for a while. They are part of the neighborhood and I'm sure locals are happy they can dine here again. Unfortunately, there is probably a good reason why I have chosen to eat at Pho Bang over the years rather than Thai Son. It's a small gap, but a noticeable one. Spring Rolls (7/10) - Very crispy but too small and needs more filling. Beef Pho (7/10) - Broth was light with a tinge of sweetness. Noodles and beef were fine. Grilled Pork (5/10) - Very dry and tough. Not enough flavor as well. Grilled Chicken (7/10) - Pretty decent, but still not as flavorful as others. Bo Luc Luc (6/10) - Beef was somewhat tough. Flavor needs more garlic. Banh Mi (5/10) - Boring sandwich with lack of filling. It's not a bad restaurant and I would eat certain things here. However, it wouldn't be my first choice with Pho Bang so close by. Regardless, I do wish them good luck and stay in the area for another few decades.

Hmmm. Been coming here since it was Thai Son. They were closed for a while for "renovation" so it was exciting for me to find out that they had reopened. The pho is still solid. But felt like the soup wasn't hot enough. Got the meat ball special this time, served with rice paper. DELICIOUS. I would rank this place in the upper echelon of Viet food in NYC. Almost comparable to the weat coast

Very good Vietnamese food in the area! We shared the veggie fried spring rolls and beef cubes as appetizers. The spring rolls were solid, but the ground tofu inside had an interesting texture. Beef cubes were super tender and delicious, especially with the signature sauce. I got the #6 pho - with beef. It was super flavorful and broth was really good. Would come back!

Huong Xuan used to be Thai Son, but they recently reopened under a new name after a short absence. I am happy to see them back in business serving up the same delicious dishes. Their pho is great overall (the beef options are the way to go, as I found the pho ga to be somewhat bland). They also have really tasty spring rolls. My only minor critique is that I did bite down on a small piece of bone in one of my spring rolls last time, and some of their grilled meats have some pieces of bone and cartilage, but that doesn't bother me since I know to look out for them (unlike when they're in a spring roll). The staff members are all so kind and attentive, and the restaurant has a very cozy and comfortable vibe. I definitely recommend it!

A no frills Vietnamese spot serving delicious pho and other authentic dishes. We came for lunch and were greeted by friendly staff. The inside is cute and has plenty of seats. My wife had the pho with grilled chicken and I had the Thịt Kho Tàu with rice. We also shared an order of crispy spring rolls. Everything was yummy and hit the spot.

Apparently this place recently reopened under a new name after a fire burned down the old spot. I came here for dinner and was seated within five minutes, which was impressively quick. Service throughout was attentive and fast. I started with the fried spring rolls. They were decent, though the filling wasn't as meaty or flavorful as I prefer. For my main dish, I ordered the pork chop with rice. The rice was well cooked with a nice texture, but the pork chop came out a bit too charred for me. The beef noodle soup, on the other hand, was pretty flavorful. The prices are fair, and the portions are generous. I'd come back to try their bánh mì, phở, and other Vietnamese staples.

Saw it was opened again but under a new name. Been missing my pho and rice dishes. We came here for dinner and we were happy again. Got the beef cube over fried rice and #1 across the table. The food is still great. Pho was good as I remembered and the beef cubes over fried rice was tasty and saucy the way I like it. The spring rolls were great too. The staff seems new but one of the old waiters recognized me and we talked it up. The new staff are very nice and the food came out quick. The changes we noticed were the new painted walls. The tables were the same and the set up was the same. Thank god it's opened again. Now I don't have to go all the way to pho bang now. Not saying it's bad but this place is closer to my house.

Had dined at Thai Son before when we went to Elmhurst and wanted authentic Vietnamese. This place still looks exactly the same, only the name has changed. The floor is still slippery The food is still quite good, and filling.

Was in Jackson heights and had to swing into this spot, I guess they changed the name from Thái Son but the interior felt exactly the same and the food was as delicious as I remember having 10+ years ago. The service is quick, funny, and friendly. Just an absolute staple, wish the luck with the rebrand.

Ate here today after work as a paraprofessional at P.S. 12 Q for dinner feeling quite hungry and wondering what to eat. I had dined in by myself to order and eat which I got the ca kho to (caramelized fish) and it was absolutely delicious. I remember this place used to be Thai Son and it recently got renamed. Anyways, the service there was also attentive and it took awhile to be served on my table and thanks for the sever named Loby to get me started of what to choose and eat and tells me briefly it recently reopened around last week. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time.

This place used to be called Thai Son. They finally opened up after there was a fire. Nothing seemed to have changed from the bathrooms to the actual dining in section. I guess the only thing that changed was the name as even the staff remained the same. Even the food was how I remembered it to all be. However, the prices changed to a couple of dollars more now.

Culantro (Eryngium foetidum)…read more My favorite pho place in Queens switched to culantro from the usual Asian basil as fresh herb garnish. Culantro is a long narrow leaf with sawtooth edges. I haven't seen this in the Northern Philippines. It doesn't look appetizing in this picture but it does taste good, as if the crinkles were intended to make it more flavorful (has to fact check this assumption). I like culantro. This herb is bright, zesty and greatly enhanced the light and clear broth of the pho. A staff member said it's just a seasonal change. The herb for cha gio remains the same, fresh mint. #curious_eater

I already knew the area wasn't the best looking area, so that part didn't surprise me. But the restaurant itself was something I had never experienced before in NYC. I'm a huge food lover and I'm willing to travel when I'm craving something specific. I've eaten everywhere, from high-end restaurants to tiny family owned spots. But this was by far the dirtiest restaurant I've ever been to in New York City. I genuinely wonder how the health department hasn't shut this place down. Since I was already there and hungry, I decided to take the risk and give it a shot anyway. I regret it. I honestly felt bad about allowing myself and my wife to eat there. The walls near the kitchen and bathroom were disgusting, the tables were dirty, and if you sit near the kitchen, you can literally see the staff grabbing basil leaves and bean sprouts with their bare hands to serve customers. No gloves, no tongs, nothing. I was honestly speechless about the hygiene situation. At one point, a waitress brought herself a summer roll, stood right next to our table, grabbed sauce from another customer's table, and started eating while standing there. There was so much going on in that place that I honestly can't even explain it properly. If you ask me about the food itself, I don't think it was bad. But at the same time, I can't give a fair opinion because my brain simply wouldn't let me enjoy the meal peacefully while constantly noticing the chaos and lack of cleanliness around me. I would not recommend this place if hygiene and cleanliness matter to you. This place is unbelievably dirty.

My only note is that it could've used more greens. The single layer of lettuce on the bottom didn't quite cut it. I understand why it's done that way, adding more might make it soggy, but something like crisp like raw string beans or haricots verts could add both freshness and volume without sacrificing texture. Still, overall, I really really enjoyed it! The grilled beef over vermicelli was solid, fresh and flavorful, but the small container of fish sauce wasn't quite enough to tie everything together. Unfortunately, the spring rolls were a letdown. They were rolled unevenly, which led to uneven frying, and they just didn't look very appealing. They were also thinner than typical Vietnamese spring rolls, which was disappointing given the price.

The food is flavorful and great portions. The pho had enough meat and noodles. The broth was great and not incredibly salty as some other places. The rice dishes were plentiful and superb serving of meat. The sandwich would have been a solid winner if they didn't pack it in aluminum foil which causes sogginess. I would recommend using the paper/waxy bags or even just a paper bag to maintain the crispiness of the bread. But a softer bread did not takeaway from the powerful punch of flavor and the right balance of ingredients in the sandwich. Divine! So tasty and would get it again - perhaps I'll toast it on my own. Definitely a good banh mi choice in Queens. The price is fantastic. Keep it this way and you'll have a constant fan base returning. Great food, great prices and service was fast and kind when I went to pick up. On top of that, their interior looks adorable so would consider dining in next time. This restaurant will now be on our rotation of Viet spots. Wishing them much success.

Which I would've been fine with if not the rest of the problems that followed. Second was I didn't receive any utensils or napkins for take out. Lastly and the WORST PART my partner started eating her lemongrass Bun and after eating a couple bites and mixing all of it she saw that the chicken was RAW! My friend also ate the lemongrass chicken banhmi and found the same after a bite or two. I called immediately to ask what happened and the answer I got was "i cooked it myself" And that the chicken was in a brine. Regardless if it is in a brine, chicken should be cooked fully. I also mentioned I had eaten there before and I have never seen their chicken pink and their response was their supply chain is different now. I asked if they could compensate us for the 2 chicken dishes and they said no refunds. I said okay politely because what else could I do besides warn people not to waste their money here. My bánh mì was bland, the coffee was forgettable, and nothing justified the price. The bigger issue was how an allergy concern was handled. My partner (someone who has eaten Vietnamese their entire life) ordered bún, which traditionally includes peanuts. Instead, it came topped with mixed nuts , something she's allergic to. When she tried to clarify, a man we assume was the owner's attempt to mitigate was brash and unaccommodating, responding along the lines of "I don't care if you've eaten Vietnamese food before. We do things differently. We're not a 'Vietnamese' restaurant and it's written in the menu". That attitude set the tone. She had to order a pho separately and pay out of pocket just to have something safe to eat. It was also subpar with the wrong noodles and broth that didn't resemble pho. If you want to position yourself as an unconventional or "not typical" Vietnamese spot, that's fine... but you can't have it both ways and then be dismissive or rude when customers are understandably confused. Based on our interaction and the way management responds to reviews, I don't expect this feedback to land anywhere productive. We won't be back.

The gaibi was dry and hard to eat on the bone even though they provided gloves and a knife. The pork chop as a side was $15 for 2 pieces and also on the dryer side. It was seasoned well but I really wished it was juicier. My favorite part of the meal was the smoky beef bun cha platter. The beef was thinly sliced and tasted sweet like bulgogi. The noodles were served with a cold dipping sauce, which contains fish sauce. I enjoyed the noodles but wished they were easier to separate. Lastly, the spicy intestine pho was my least favorite. I personally do not like small intestines so it was not the dish for me. The soup was not very spicy and tasted like the offals. This place feels like a hidden gem you almost want to keep secret... but it's just too good not to share. What makes Pho Metro stand out right away is how authentic it feels. You can tell this is truly a labor of love. One guy runs the show and somehow manages to do it all, from cooking to serving, and the care he puts into the food absolutely shows in every single bite. It has that comforting, homemade quality that makes you feel like you've stepped into a small family kitchen rather than just another restaurant. The food itself is outstanding. Everything tastes incredibly fresh, from the herbs to the broth. I highly recommend the thin noodles with the spicy lemongrass broth (you can request this if it's not listed). It's bursting with flavor, slightly tangy, perfectly spicy, and deeply savory in a way that warms you from the inside out. Every spoonful feels like a cozy blanket on a cold day. The summer rolls are another must-order. They're fresh, light, and packed with flavor, and the peanut sauce that comes with them is absolutely delicious. It's rich, savory, and addictive enough that you'll find yourself scraping the cup to get every last drop. Another detail I really appreciated is how everything you need is right at your fingertips. All the sauces are readily available at the table, so you can customize your bowl exactly how you like it without having to ask or wait. It makes the whole experience feel easy, comfortable, and welcoming. And don't skip the Thai iced tea. It's perfectly sweet, creamy, and refreshing, especially alongside the bold flavors of the pho. Also its surprising because every time I go the place is pretty packed and occasionally there is a wait. What's also a shame, for me, is that on my recent visit my friend ordered the Steamed Seafood in Lemongrass and this is perhaps the top, or one of the top dishes on the menu. The seafood flavors and balances the slightly spicy lemongrass broth making this a crave worthy bowl. I ordered something out of my wheelhouse - the Coconut Spicy Lemongrass Soup, which on online order menu states its a popular dish. I couldn't see why this dish is so popular because I find other items on the menu superior. They make a tasty pho (especially when paired with a marrow bone). Their sandwiches are well made - I enjoy the different fish ones. I think their Vietnamese coffee could use some work - it is blander than other versions I had tried. Don't be too sad and maybe feel a little optimistic because owner Petra Rickman has a great track record opening interesting, in demand restaurants (This one and Taco Azul have been longtime go-tos in Whitestone). Additionally G&L has a 2nd location with the same menu in Manhattan, which unfortunately for a Queens boy like myself is a bridge too far and a congestion pricing too high for me to make the trek.
