Double Dirty Martinis
Alma R.

Met a friend for drinks and we sat in the bar area since they were a little busy. We'd heard their Dirty Martinis were good there so of course we had to have them and we were not disappointed! We also ordered a couple of sushi rolls and they were really yummy. Houston's ambiance was classy with lots of happy customers and the waitresses were very friendly and helpful.

I went to Houston's today after work to unwind, and I asked to have a seat. I was immediately seated in the bar area in the booth at the very last seat by the exit door as I sat there for about 15 minutes no one came to my table to ask me if I wanted any water or anything, and I didn't see anyone coming by my table. I asked the bartender whether they would send a waiter over to my table. I'm sorry; the bartender was very nice and sent someone to my table. I then ordered my food and waited to eat for my food to come. Ten minutes after I ordered my food, a manager named Lydia came to my table and asked whether I was OK, and then took my silverware without asking me if I wanted it or needed it which I did need because I had just sat down and I hadn't gotten any food yet, I didn't say anything; I let her go. My food came. I ate my food. After eating my food, the manager Lydia, came by and told me to turn down the volume on my phone. She just walked up rude and said that. I replied saying my volume is not up as you can see and I'm not doing anything but looking at a picture. She said, Oh! Sorry, and walked away without saying anything theyng else about the restaurant's rules of phone use, etc., Now I'm feeling some type of way cause I felt like she was profiling me in the beginning. I feel she was now fir sure profiling me now the entire time for no reason that I don't know why. I felt she was picking on me. It's loud inside the restaurant because I'm sitting near the bar area. It's loud; even if I had my phone up you probably wouldn't even be able to hear it, but I didn't even have my phone on talking or listening to anything because I just came from work and I wanted to relax. I didn't wanna talk to anyone. I was just enjoying myself and I just feel like she profiled me for no reason. She had, like a smug attitude even when she talked to me; it didn't seem real. It seemed fake and I was just very disappointed. I'm not sure now if I'm gonna go ever come back to Houston this is the reason they're getting a rating of a one star. I asked to speak to her supervisor, and a young man named Robert came and spoke with me. I told him everything, and he was apologetic and took my drink off my bill. I felt he was just trying to appease me but to me that was not good enough. My family and I have been coming here for years. Note: My waiter Adrian he was very nice. He did everything correctly and was very pleasant. But I feel both of the managers did not do a professional job. I feel Robert could've done more or explained things better and she should have been talked to and come over and apologized afterward. However I just felt like nothing was done, and also I've never seen anything in the bar area or at the dining table where it says anything about the volume on your phone or being on your phone so that was weird to me. I Check In all the time there so I'm very disappointed. I will be calling Corporate in regard to the matter also. I was so humiliated. Note: Also, this location has a big turnover of managers, which is not good. They need more consistency.

Consistently, delicious. Been coming here probably for more than 25+ years, this little gem in Pasadena never disappoints and always knows how to hit the right spots. My usual is always the Hawaiian Ribeye until several years ago, they had a guest star join the spotlight, the Wood Grilled Ribeye which made me a diehard fan. That guest star is now a regular on this delicious menu. And that wood fire aroma sipping from the grill right in front by the door to welcome you fills the air soon as you step through those elegant pair of gold framed glass doors will make you more hungry than ever before. You've been warned.

This Houstons never disappoints. Everytime i come, service and food are always amazing. Ribeye medium rare, house salad with thousand island and sushi//crab cakes are my usual go tos. I love that they give seasoning salt for the fries and extra thousand island without us asking for it. Crab cakes are only sold at dinner time now.

This is my second time here, the food is always delicious and our waitress was so sweet and attentive. The spinach and artichoke dip is always a favorite and is a good size, they also will give you extra chips. The california burger was good, I also love their fries and the seasoning it comes with. The french dip was also delicious, but I think this time when we got it, the dip was not as salty and the bun was not as soft as last time we had it. This was my first time trying the beans and rice, it was super flavorful. The beans tasted similar to barbeque sauce. The brownie was also really good, I like how most of the nuts were on top vs inside of the brownie Although this is a pricier meal, it is a good meal & ambience for a date night or girl's night'

I love coming here so much! The food, the ambiance, the variety. Food is always delicious and consistent. They have everything for everyone from the sushi to delicious starters, steaks, ribs and more. The servers are always wonderful too. Only downside is when going with my family, the staff or manager gives you plenty of dirty looks with the kids. A little awkward for me because I love to have dinner with my kids especially at places they enjoy. Besides that, it is a wonderful place to dine.

The last word 4: Going to Houston's is always an experience that I look forward to. I always rave about the highly professional servers and the excellent service, but during my last visit they came a little short of their usual attentiveness and attention to detail. Still a favorite restaurant of mine and highly recommended! Location 4: On the SE corner of S Arroyo Pkwy (a.k.a. Route 66) and Del Mar Blvd in the busy Pasadena, CA. Fortunately they offer free parking on the restaurant lot. Metered parking on the street is possible but limited. Venue 5: Upscale and trendy setting with comfortable indoor tables and booths. No outdoor seating. It is always very busy so be sure to make reservations way ahead of time Service 3.5: Our server this time was a little slow and casual, and not very attentive. This is unusual for Houston's. Food 5: Excellent, upscale comfort food. You simply cannot go wrong with anything on their menu. Drinks 3: Excellent (but small) list of creative specialty drinks. Full bar. Good list of beer and wine. While they do serve Espresso and Cappuccino and have a full bar, can you believe that they will not make you an Espresso Martini??? :D They also do NOT have decaf at all which is kind of unexpected.

1st time, on our way to a concert. Excellent experience. Had the asian noodle salad w/ chicken & sushi. Delicious. Had a Lemon drop which was refreshing. Halfway thru our drinks our server came w/ a fresh chilled glass & a fresh sugar rim to transfer our drinks! WHAT??? We topped it off w/ an apple pie w/ vanilla ice cream. What a wonderful dinner. Our server was Ms C Araya & she was absolutely thee best!

One of my favorite places to come to for drinks and dinner. Some of my favorite dishes is the pressed sushi, cheese burger, and a crisp martini. The ribeye was really good as well, it was super flavorful and tender. Service is always top tier which I really love.

It's been a long time coming since I've been back to Houston's. And boy do I miss it. Food was delicious. The service was excellent. I was seated at the bar and even though the bartenders were swamped they were still attentive and make sure everything was good and if anything else was needed. It was crowded for a Friday afternoon, you can imagine how bust it would be during dinner time and weekends. I would always recommend Houston's, you can never go with wrong with a Pasadena staple. I'll be making more trips back. I will say the sushi was okay, maybe because of the roll I got. But it wasn't bad either. Maybe I'll try a different one next time.

Nigiri plate
Christine L.

This was my first time at any of the Hillstone restaurants and it did not disappoint. We had reservations and was seated relatively quickly, highly recommend making a reservation. We absolutely loved everything we ordered: -nigiri plate -rotisserie chicken -prime rib sandwich Everything tasted amazing (surprisingly the sushi was delicious!). We got cocktails and mid-cocktail the server came by and refreshed my martini glass to a cold one. The food quality and the service made our first visit so great that we are excited to try the other Hillstone restaurants.

I came here for an early Valentine dinner but everyone seem to have the same idea as us so the wait was long. Note to self: Make a reservation next time. While waiting, there was a waitress who took drinks orders for people waiting. Other than the long wait, when my bf and I got seated, we were seated at the Bar. I ordered the Hawaiian steak and he ordered the wood grilled ribeye. I kept stealing my boyfriend's fries, the baked potato was alright. However for the medium Hawaiian steak, I ordered it was really good, the marinate was sweet and flavorful. My bf's wood grilled steak was very juicy. The service was friendly and kept asking us if we needed anything.

Houston's Restaurant Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Houston's Restaurant

Do they serve baked Alaska?

I go there pretty frequently and have never seen it on the menu or in the restaurant.

Are Dogs allowed on patio?

There is no patio

Is there motorcycle parking?

I think there is. Their parking lot is ginormous.

Can it accommodate a party of 6?

The restaurant is styled for more intimate gatherings. Four are comfortably seated in some of the larger booths, six would be a squeeze. You can call to ask if their large circular booth would hold 6

Is there any dress code? Is jeans acceptable?

This is from the horse's mouth (a.k.a. the restaurant website). Now how literally they will enforce it may vary from case to case. I usually go there dressed casually but not in beach attire. Nice jeans should be fine. I've won them before:…

Can any of the vegetarian options be made vegan?

How is the parking?

Not great for bicycles, but ok for cars....

Do you do take out?

Yes they do.

Open Christmas day?

Yes

Open thanksgiving day?

Houston's is closed on Thanksgiving.

Do they serve bread?

Bread is not served.

Do they do take out?

No they do not

Adding my name to waitlist?

If you call ahead, you can be added

Is it true that Houston does not allow you to dine in when you have a family or party of more than 4 people??? I just called to make a reservation & a female hostess said they do not allow parties of more than 4 with or without reservations to dine.

Yes, not sure why, but the Pasadena restaurant has tables that are fastened to the floor which prevents multiple tables from being moved in together for larger groups. So, the layout is set up for tables with two to four chairs. When it's crowded…

Is the restaurant dog friendly?

Service animals only, but registered service animals, not some barking or easily distracted animal posing as one (which is a felony)

Are there high chairs now or a kids menu?

No there is not no high chairs or kid menus

Do you have to make a reservation or is walk ins fine?

With a reservation you will not have to wait if you just walk in it depends on how busy the restaurant is at the time you decide to go

Can my gf and I pop in here for a drink at the bar without having dinner? Is it realistic to think we could get a seat at the bar?…

Yes, you can no issue.

Can you accommodate a party of 20?

No. You can reserve a table for two or for four, but not for a table of 6 which is walk-in (first come first serve) only. Other than those tables, there is seating at the bar.

Do they do anything special for birthdays or anniversaries?

Nothing crazy the regular like other restaurants but it's a treat to go there and I just visited the Irvine one where they had their key lime pie .... OMG now I felt like it was my birthday cause I got an extra slice to go.

It wasnt that busy at the time of our arrival. There were a lot of tables and the noise level was quiet. The host was nice and sat us not too long after we arrived. The table that we got sat at was extremely wobbly. My father-in-law noticed another table had napkins placed underneath to stabilize so he did the same to our table and it worked. Tara took our order and brought out the drinks. The food was 90% great! The 10% that fell short was a combination of things. 1) menu online and the physical menu said corn bread (which we were told no longer serves them). If its no longer available, update the menu because we were excited to try the corn bread. 2) a bbq place with no wet naps, that is really weird. However, they did bring me a stack of paper towels that were wet as if they were wet naps. 3) only 1 steak knife was provided in the platters. It was hard for a party of 6 to cut up meat with only 1 steak knife. 4) one of the sides came out cold, and hard. I bit into a macaroni and it felt raw because of how hard it was! I even dropped the macaroni on the plate and it rang! We brought it to the servers attention and we were able to get a fresh one free of charge. We loved the short ribs and the tomahawk steak! They were delicious. Baked potato as a side item was very large! During the whole time we were eating, no one came by to check on us, refills were not provided until after we were done eating. We never got one of the drinks that Tara wrote down and it showed up on the check. I was trying to get a staff members attention, and my hand was raised up, and there were hosts that saw my hand raised, but did nothing. There were other servers and runners that saw it too. Took a while for us to get any help. We eventually flagged down our server after what felt like 5 minutes. We brought the charge to our servers attention, and they corrected that too. Overall, the table service could have been a lot better, fix broken tables, and I suggest you bring your own wet naps or baby wipes because they dont supply any.

They have consistently provided good food, great service, and an enjoyable experience. Whether it's for special occasions or a nice afternoon lunch you are treated to a great time. I have not updated my review for quite a while so I decided after my most recent lunch there that it was time to do so. The menu has changed but their favorites are still listed and specials are always available. I happened to be in the area taking care of some appointments when I met up with a friend to have lunch on a late Tuesday afternoon. There were a few people outside and a few people inside. We decided we would sit at the bar. After a conversation about the changes in the menu and deciding what to have to drink we decided to take advantage of their lunch specials available that day. What a great selection! The carpaccio was my friend's pick and I, after some indecision between the burger and the Philly cheese steak, decided to have their popular Malbec Burger with cheese and bacon. While we waited for our meal to be prepared we each enjoyed our beverages. They still have a great selection of wines and beers and hard liquors,as well as specialty prepared Cocktails. Some people came in to pick up orders while we sat at the bar. Their patio tables with umbrellas are located right near the entrance. Inside there is a choice of tables as well as some booths. It was nice to be able to sit in the bar area and have a conversation with our server. He also brought out some warm fresh sliced baguette with chimichurri. The warm baguettes were perfect for the conversation and beverages we were enjoying. When our food was placed in front of us each item was perfectly described by our server. With my Malbec hamburger I chose the lentil soup. The lentil soup was incredible. It was hardy and flavorful. My burger was cooked to order and was great. My friend's carpaccio came with capers with the proper consistency and balance of a great appetizer. There are many favorites to enjoy in each of the menu sections. Whether it be appetizers, salads, small meals, classic Argentine specials, and desserts. I know that they also have a variety of vegetarian dishes available. The kitchen accommodates most appropriate requests. Your server can help you with any situations need special attention. It is nice to know that they have made it through all of the different changes that have happened in the restaurant business during the last few years. Our server Eric is a great example of someone who enjoys and loves helping people find their next favorite meal. He is a professional waiter. While parking can sometimes be difficult, valet parking is available. Street parking and close by parking lots are also available; some have restrictions so it is important to read the signs carefully. These streets are monitored. Our lunch was a great experience and I look forward to coming back again. I know that it can get crowded on the weekends so reservations are highly recommended. Lunches depending on the size of the group may require reservations as well I look forward to coming back and having another enjoyable experience! Thank you Malbec!

Service is exceptiona and the meal was well paced. l 5/5. Food. 3/5 My party of five ordered from the two- course prix fixe menu...two got the petitfilet with lobster, two got the short ribs with risotto, and one ordered a large filet with bone and lobster. All the lobsters were overcooked. The steaks were supposed to be medium rare or mediuim,, but they were all medium well done. The meal came with a generous salad, three of us had the Caesar and two of us had the house salad. 5/5 The house had nuts and cranberries, it was great. Our server came around with a pepper mill, also a hunk of parm for anyone who wanted it sprinkled on the salad. Nice touches. We ordered four sides, which were a la carte...Brussel sprouts..asparagus. .Fleming potatoes basically scalloped potatoes with cheese...and the mack and cheese. Great roasted al dented sprouts and asparagus...5/5...everyone enjoyed the other two but I found them too salty, and the cheese a bit overwhelming. Birthday girl loved the Fleming potatoes though. We enjoyed the warm loaf of bread but it was small and visually depressing and ungenerous. We had a table of big guys and each guy could have eaten a loaf all by themselves ......1/5 for the portion size for a table of 5.. the pumpkin butter and the brie was delicious 5/5....a nice departure from just a pat of butter. Yay for the inventive choice of bread spreads. 5/5 Parking. We parked in the structure behind the restaurant. Normally it costs 15.50 but Flemings validates. However, even though I used the QR validation code, it didn't register at the exit gate. Had to call for help, with the line of cars piling five deep behind me. Happily, an attendant answered the call and gave us our discount so parking with validation was 5.50. I noticed other patrons before and after me seemed to have a si.ilar issue. Fix the QR code please. 2/5 Ambiance. 4,/5. It was an expensive meal, but in an upscale modern spacious setting with an open kitch at the rear..., the lighting is too dim and we had to use cell phone flashlights inorder to read and study the menu...suggestion, table andles or pendant lighting...its not romantic to have to use a flashlight in order to read the menu. It was nice to try this place for our special occasion...while the food was not a wow, the service was. Wait staff and concierge staff were all bright lights in a dinly-lit albeit beautful restaurant. Place was packed and too noisy for conversation at 7 pm on a Friday nite. A nice place for special occasions.

Had a wonderful time dining at The Derby. My server Chris, along with the rest of the staff, was…read morevery friendly. Food is excellent all around. Recommendations: Onion soup-More Gruyère cheese than almost everywhere else but I prefer it that way. Guess this is a personal preference. Can be cooked a bit longer for a crispier cheese crust if that is the case. Prime rib-Excellent in medium rare. Seasoned well. Nice edgy crust. Definitely prime grade beef. Would order again. Bread pudding-perfect ending to the meal. Will try the baked Alaska next time if stomach permits. I liked that the booths have clear dividers. Helps separate neighboring noise.

We were excited to visit The Derby for the first time, especially to celebrate a friend's birthday…read moreat such a longstanding restaurant. While there were some highlights, a few aspects of the experience fell short of our expectations. To start, the complimentary garlic bread was soggy from being drenched in butter and felt too heavy. The Clam chowder ($16) was tasty, but finding a wet pink Splenda wrapper stuck to the inside of the cup when we reached the bottom raised concerns about cleanliness. The server acknowledged it with a joke and management later removed it from our bill. We ended up both ordering the three course menu ($69 each). The Calamari in stick form were delicious, though I personally prefer traditional rings. The Spiced meatballs were also enjoyable, served two to an order with fresh Parmesan and basil. For our mains, we chose the Bacon Wrapped Fish Mignon (+$7 upcharge) and George Woolf's Prime Rib (+$9 upcharge). Both steaks were of high quality and prepared well. The sides unfortunately were too rich for me to enjoy. Butter and cheese was all I could taste in the Potatoes Romanoff and I could only manage two bites of it. The Creamed Corn (+$7 upcharge), which I understand is one of their standout sides, tasted like standard canned corn with heavy cream and a layer of cheese. The upcharge for basic sides like creamed corn and creamed spinach seemed excessive. Dessert was another let down. The Cheesecake was served warm and mushy, while the Bread pudding was barely lukewarm and overly dense. Service started well, but there were a few hiccups. Our waiter accidentally dropped a utensil onto the neighboring booth. It may have been a steak knife, and thankfully no one was hurt. He also dropped a sauce container and nearly my cheesecake while packing our leftovers. I also appreciate attentive service, but his frequent check ins asking us if everything was okay and if we needed anything else, sometimes just 5 to 10 minutes apart, interrupted the flow of our meal. My friend even joked afterward that he what he needed was more peace and quiet, lol. When waiting for the bill, the waiter felt the need to explain that management was reviewing it because of the soup issue. Simply pointing out the adjustment when presenting the bill would have felt more natural than having to explain it beforehand. Overall, we thought the appetizers and main courses were tasty, but the sides, desserts, and service could have been better. Given The Derby's history and reputation, we had hoped for a more polished and consistent experience. It wasn't a terrible meal, but the combination of small issues made our first visit less enjoyable than we had hoped.
