Course 1: both the Cebiche Aji Amarillo albacore tuna and yucca chips and the Vieras Gratinadas scallop crab were beautifully presented. Tuna was packed with flavor and great texture layers. Scallop was more delicate and mild flavors. Second course: the out of this world Ojo de Bife Al Malbec rib eye ... would 100% order again and the excellent as well Pollo à la Granja. Sauces on both dishes were super star! Argentinian cuisine obviously treats us to incredible culinary herbs and spices (fresh dill on the scallops and rosemary on the chicken) Third course: dessert for days! Crepe De Durzano .. light crepes and gelato... and the too die for Pastelito de Membrillo. Fruity summary crispy tart like dessert with gelato and fresh berries! Came to Malbec Argentinean Cuisine in Pasadena with friends this past Wednesday for dinner. We arrived early enough to catch happy hour before our 5:45 p.m. reservation. We started at the bar with Ernesto, who was wonderful. He recommended the Moscow Mule because they make their ginger syrup in-house, and it was delicious. The red sangria was also a hit. For happy hour food, we tried the spicy beef empanadas, 5 oz skirt steak (entraña) with peppercorn sauce, and cebiche mixto. Everything was great. Our only mistake was not ordering fries to dip into that peppercorn sauce! After happy hour, we moved to our table and met our server Eder. He was sweet, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine. He made an excellent wine recommendation to pair with our dinner and started us off with complimentary warm baguette and classic chimichurri. For dinner, we ordered the Tabla Mixta with ribeye and short ribs. The meats arrived sizzling on cast iron and were cooked perfectly medium-rare. It came with three chimichurri sauces, with the garlic chimichurri being my favorite. Honestly, the meats were seasoned so well they didn't even need sauce. We also tried the Arroz con Mariscos and added Argentinean chorizo. The octopus, mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops were all cooked perfectly. The rice was a little too wet for my preference since I enjoy the crispy, scorched bottom of a Spanish-style paella, but the seafood itself was excellent. The ambiance is lively and can get pretty loud, so we had to speak a little louder than normal. My only real complaint was the temperature in the main dining room. It was extremely warm throughout our visit, even with the AC supposedly running at full power. Interestingly, the area near the restrooms was noticeably cooler. This was really the only thing keeping our experience from being 5 stars. Parking around Green Street can be challenging, but street parking is free. We got lucky and found a spot down the block. There's also a paid public lot near Green and Mentor. Overall, Malbec delivered excellent food and even better service. Ernesto and Eder were both fantastic and really elevated our experience. Overall, it has a great laid-back environment with an open kitchen concept where you can see the chefs preparing your meal. You can see that they cook the steaks on a grill, perhaps with wood chips, because it has that woody flavor when you bite into your steak. Overall, they've prepared the steak well, so it's not too well done and cooked to perfection at medium-rare. I'm kind of at a crossroads with the skirt steak for the price. I would expect better quality meat, but I can't complain overall about the taste of the skirt steak. I would have expected it to be better prepared and tenderized; it still had a bit of chewiness. I think you have to be an expert in how to prepare skirt steak so that it's not so tough. The ribeye was thick and juicy, so I can't complain about it, with a nice, warm, woody taste. I know it seems a bit weird coming to a steakhouse to try some of the fish, but I can't complain too much about the fish. It was coated in some sauce that made it delicious with a mix of vegetables to balance out the meal. Worse Dine LA meal we ever had. The owners and chef decided to hide all their proteins under a ton of sauce, cheese, and overpowering spices wrapping it all in plating that my 13 year old son can do better than. My goodness Malbec - you are too good for what you put out today. We've been here many times and have never been disappointed- but today was horrible. Pitted carved concrete and Malibu tiles. Step inside and be greeted by a genuine warm smile and and someone that is happy to see you, and if your luck is holding the Host will invite you to a take a short shuffle to a huge booth where you can make a comfy nest. The Decor is a charcoal gray box with a dining room filled with 2 and 4 tops, a communal table or two, a private dining room and a curbside patio if you insist. Malbec is a perfect place to celebrate a Quinceanera, a non-Kosher Bar Mitzvah, a Golden Shower Retirement, a Gender Reveal, a Gender Conceal or that your substandard Insurance Co. will actually pay for your GPL-1 meds which you might need after over eating great food here. The patio outside is good if the tango loop inside is too loud, but then you're just trading that for unmuffled mufflers and exhaust fumes. At 5:00 PM it's just you and the Chorizo Sampler which is worth it's weight in Statins. The place reinvents itself by 8:00 PM when the chatter ratchets up and the dining room becomes a B. A. Social Club. The din of diners bounces around the room like a soccer ball at a Fifa Match. (Argentina is the reigning champion). The Staff: Rosa is delightful. A girl that never says no and someone who knows how to pull up the reins and spur the pony (read take charge and enhance your experience). The Bar: This long counter anchors the room and delivers what ever your poison might be. The Food: Malbec boasts a huge menu and all of it is good to great. Within minutes of settling in a Runner runs up to your table and sets down a basket of warm Bread with a cup of Chimichurri Sauce to dunk dip, drag and/on dredge your Bread in. The Malbec Salad was large enough to feed everyone in the Recoleta at sundown. Fresh Romaine, Radicchio, Goat Cheese crumbles, a hand carved Avocado fan (I'm a big fan of that), quartered Cucumber Coins, Frisee Lettuce, a sizable slice of toasted Bread, the large mound is mixed with a Caesar-ish Dressing and the whole pile is fresh, refreshing, tasty and a great dish to begin your dinner with. The menu is ambitious to say the least. Heroic lists of Appetizers, Pastas, Pizza, Mains, Seafood, Steaks, Sides, Sauces and Desserts. The Kitchen is fearless because they know they can crank out everything on the menu properly. And you know, they can. I opted for Pollo Las Hierbas (Herb Roasted Chicken), spatchcocked (back cone removed and the whole half Chicken squashed flat for quick and easy grilling). Did I mention that the portions are substantial? They are. The Chicken begins it's journey soaking in Lemon and Herbs. For an additional $2 you can bury the whole bird with Diabla Sauce. (read Spicy Chili Gravy). This Sauce would be delicious over julienned Gym Socks or Dust Bunnies. The welcome heat is delicious even if you're timid with spice. The Chicken arrives tender but with crisp edges, juicy and tasting like Chicken could and should taste. While the Chicken was definitely marinated it's hard to determine if it was brined first. No matter as it was spot on great. The Chicken Chef was not chicken and got it right. The Sauteed Spinach retained it's Spinach integrity and was fished out of the water while still slightly toothy. Excellent. The Kitchen elevated Spinach beyond Pop-Eye's power surge urge. This was beyond just a Side Dish. Vegans, have at it. The Roasted Potatoes were also good enough to enjoy as a Main. Really crunchy nuggets with creamy centers. This place not only offers fine comida de la gente, the restaurant is efficient but doesn't rush. Want to enjoy sobremesa? (relaxing time after dinner to discuss politics, religion, sex and gossip about the people you've just dined with). Sobremesa (literally means around the table) is a charming and civilized concept. I came to Melbec with my husband for a date night and it reminded me why we love this place so much. Parking can be a bit tricky since it's on the corner and it is on an one way street, but once you're inside, it's totally worth it. This place is super cozy and romantic. We started with their empanadas (a must), then he had the homemade spinach stuffed ravioli and I got the short rib pasta. Everything was so delicious. A group of us descended upon Malbec to celebrate a special event and we all had a great time. One of us selected a Prosecco to start and a Malbec to accompany the main course. My gnocchi (spelled "Ñoquis" in Spanish) were rich and delicious, served with roasted bone marrow. We also split an order of empanadas and a beet/arugula salad, which were fantastic. I was pleasantly surprised that this place was open during Christmas (as many restaurants close on Christmas Day). I was able to make a reservation through OpenTable, which was very simple and user-friendly. Because I had the reservation, we were seated right away (so highly recommend making reservations ahead of time). For entrée, we ordered the Arroz con Mariscos (seafood paella), rib eye steak (ojo de bife), New York steak and sorrentinos pasta. Arroz con Mariscos was solid and on point. Seafood tasted fresh and bursting with flavor, even octopus was tender. Good portion and perfect for sharing. Sorrentinos pasta was rich and satisfying. The steaks arrived beautifully charred and cooked to perfect medium. Both came with 3 types of chimichurri sauce, which really enhances the flavor of the steak. Dessert was fantastic. I got complimentary scoop of ice cream for my birthday which paired well with bread pudding and crème brulee topped with berries. So glad we picked this place again. It started with small pieces of slightly stale bread with chimichuri sauce (that was tasty). Burrata appetizer was good. I got the potato pasta and shared the filet. The pasta was ok, mediocore. The Filet was nothing special, cooked nicely but quality was like something I could get from the grocery store. My friend enjoyed the rib eye. crème brûlée for dessert was really good, highlight of the meal. Cocktails were good. Overall: I'm a foodie and appreciate a good authentic meal. The ribeye was super tender, I enjoyed this a lot more than the New York which was tougher, but that was to be expected. I liked how the edges on both were slightly charred. I also got the ceviche with tuna and octopus, and this was probably my favorite dish of the night. The tuna was so fresh along with the other ingredients, and the octopus had a nice firm texture. Loved the chips! We got the crepes for dessert since our waiter said that was their best seller. To be honest, I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream a lot more, haha, but I still enjoyed the chewy texture of the crepes. Like the steaks, the crepes also had charred edges which gave it an extra crunch. I ordered spicy beef empanadas, cheese and corn empanadas, skirt steak which came along with a salad, grilled pacific sole, and grilled skirt steak. My favorites were the corn and cheese empanadas and the sole. The sole was tender and flavorful. I thought the steak could have been more tender and maybe less salt on the spicy beef empanadas. Tasty Argentinian spot with friendly service. Came here for lunch with my parents and had a reservation, which we made online in advance. Street parking available. We were greeted with complimentary bread with chimichurri sauce. We shared a meat platter including chorizo and short ribs - the meat came out sizzling hot and was tasty. It came with three different types of sauces. We ordered a salad to start as well as some fries and fried calamari (you need balance in life). The fries were really crispy as was the calamari. We ended with some crepes, which was probably overdoing it as we had leftovers, but the crepes with ice cream sounded like a sweet way to end the meal. Restrooms are located in the back right. First time at this establishment, was here celebrating a birthday. Started off with a few appetizers, the first was PULPO AL AJI AMARILLO(octopus) the flavor was very good, but just a tad chewy, second was TABLA CHORIZOS ( Argentinean, Morcila and veal sweetbreads) the Chorizo's were great, the sweetbreads seemed overly cooked a little on the crispy side for my liking. For my entree I ordered TROFIE, RAGU & CARACU with a side of CREMA DE CHOCLO. The pasta with the braised short rib and bone marrow were spot on, very flavorful, the crema de choclo was very bland, no queso fresco flavor, it just reminded me of cream corn from a can. Our server was great, he was very attentive, well mannered and friendly. We were seated in a nice corner spot with a window view, very intimate spot. After the meal was complete, the server comped us a glass of champagne to celebrate my birthday. read more

Malbec Argentinean Cuisine was a solid dinner spot overall, especially if you're craving a good steak. We started with the Remolachas y Peras, which served as our salad, and it was fresh and flavorful. After that, there was a noticeable wait before the rest of the food arrived. The Lomo wrapped with applewood bacon, hongos provenzal, and puré de papas took quite a long time to come out. At one point, I jokingly said to my date, "What are they doing back there, fetching the cow?" It was a busy Saturday night, so the delay wasn't entirely surprising, but it was definitely felt. Once the food arrived, it was worth the wait. The Lomo, cooked medium rare, was hands down my favorite so juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The sides were comforting and well-prepared, and everything came with a side of warm bread, which was a nice touch. Our reservation was at 6:15 pm, and they seated me right away while my date went to look for parking, which was a pain in that area on a Saturday evening. If you're wearing heels, I highly recommend having your date drop you off first while they circle for parking. Service was mostly fine, but the waiter rubbed me the wrong way toward the end of the night. I was set on ordering all three desserts, and he kept questioning me, then looked to my date as if he needed to approve. That felt unnecessary as he shouldn't assume that I needed approval from my date. Overall, the food especially the steak was delicious, and I'd come back for that alone. Just be prepared for a longer wait on busy nights and don't let anyone talk you out of dessert. read more

This place is a carnivore's dream! We arrived with a serious appetite and left thoroughly satisfied. We came around 4:00 PM on a Saturday and were seated right away. At that time, it wasn't too busy or noisy, which made for a relaxed dining experience. The atmosphere is prettty low-lit and classy, creating a cozy, yet professional vibe. We kicked things off with the clams, bread and oil, and enjoyed iced tea to drink. For sides, we ordered a mix of veggies and creamy mashed potatoes. The main course was a feast, featuring a variety of meats and seafood that we selected ourselves which included steak, sausage, scallops, etc. Everything was cooked exactly to our liking: tender, flavorful, and clearly high quality. You can really taste the care that goes into the food. If you're coming with a large group, I'd recommend ordering several sides and a few shared plates for the table. It's the best way to sample everything and keep everyone happy and full. This place has my stamp of approval for sure. read more

Malbec is an Argentinian restaurant located in the heart of Pasadena offering traditional Argentinian / Spanish fare in a cozy setting. Our family came on New Year's Day in the early evening. We were greeted and chose a table in a quiet corner; the restaurant is austere, classic, simple, dimly lit, and cozy. After an initial offering of bread and seasoned olive oil we shared the Arroz Con Mariscos for Two ($79), essentially a large seafood paella. The paella was perfect, with excellent, flavorful rice and vegetables, and an appropriate amount of seafood, with a generous supply of calamari and octopus and a smaller, but appropriate, number of scallops, shrimp, and mussels. This was followed by the Costillitas de Cordero - 18oz of Lamb Chops ($58), which were excellent; 4 generous rib chop pieces, 3 cooked to a perfect medium rare (1 overcooked to a medium well) and seasoned perfectly. They were paired with an included Porcini sauce, a Madeira wine and mushroom mixture which I found unremarkable, and didn't add much to the savory chops. We completed with the Panqueques de Dulce de Leche ($16) a pair of crepes drenched in delicious chocolate and caramel for a rich, flawless flavor, which were paired with ice cream and fresh fruit. Service was friendly and appropriate. Value, as above, was a little lacking; while the food was great, in my opinion each item was priced about 10-20% higher than justified, especially for a restaurant off the main Pasadena beat.
