Definitely worth the hassle. Or you could endure a 2 hour slog up the 5 Fwy (which makes the 12 hour flight sound good) and enjoy excellent Argentine cuisine here. Then when you get there, parking is not just a challenge, it's a mystery. Street parking only so prepare to be creative and lucky. The vintage building is attractive. Pitted carved concrete and Malibu tiles. Step inside and be greeted by a genuine warm smile and and someone that is happy to see you, and if your luck is holding the Host will invite you to a take a short shuffle to a huge booth where you can make a comfy nest. The Decor is a charcoal gray box with a dining room filled with 2 and 4 tops, a communal table or two, a private dining room and a curbside patio if you insist. Malbec is a perfect place to celebrate a Quinceanera, a non-Kosher Bar Mitzvah, a Golden Shower Retirement, a Gender Reveal, a Gender Conceal or that your substandard Insurance Co. will actually pay for your GPL-1 meds which you might need after over eating great food here. The patio outside is good if the tango loop inside is too loud, but then you're just trading that for unmuffled mufflers and exhaust fumes. At 5:00 PM it's just you and the Chorizo Sampler which is worth it's weight in Statins. The place reinvents itself by 8:00 PM when the chatter ratchets up and the dining room becomes a B. A. Social Club. The din of diners bounces around the room like a soccer ball at a Fifa Match. (Argentina is the reigning champion). The Staff: Rosa is delightful. A girl that never says no and someone who knows how to pull up the reins and spur the pony (read take charge and enhance your experience). The Bar: This long counter anchors the room and delivers what ever your poison might be. The Food: Malbec boasts a huge menu and all of it is good to great. Within minutes of settling in a Runner runs up to your table and sets down a basket of warm Bread with a cup of Chimichurri Sauce to dunk dip, drag and/on dredge your Bread in. The Malbec Salad was large enough to feed everyone in the Recoleta at sundown. Fresh Romaine, Radicchio, Goat Cheese crumbles, a hand carved Avocado fan (I'm a big fan of that), quartered Cucumber Coins, Frisee Lettuce, a sizable slice of toasted Bread, the large mound is mixed with a Caesar-ish Dressing and the whole pile is fresh, refreshing, tasty and a great dish to begin your dinner with. The menu is ambitious to say the least. Heroic lists of Appetizers, Pastas, Pizza, Mains, Seafood, Steaks, Sides, Sauces and Desserts. The Kitchen is fearless because they know they can crank out everything on the menu properly. And you know, they can. I opted for Pollo Las Hierbas (Herb Roasted Chicken), spatchcocked (back cone removed and the whole half Chicken squashed flat for quick and easy grilling). Did I mention that the portions are substantial? They are. The Chicken begins it's journey soaking in Lemon and Herbs. For an additional $2 you can bury the whole bird with Diabla Sauce. (read Spicy Chili Gravy). This Sauce would be delicious over julienned Gym Socks or Dust Bunnies. The welcome heat is delicious even if you're timid with spice. The Chicken arrives tender but with crisp edges, juicy and tasting like Chicken could and should taste. While the Chicken was definitely marinated it's hard to determine if it was brined first. No matter as it was spot on great. The Chicken Chef was not chicken and got it right. The Sauteed Spinach retained it's Spinach integrity and was fished out of the water while still slightly toothy. Excellent. The Kitchen elevated Spinach beyond Pop-Eye's power surge urge. This was beyond just a Side Dish. Vegans, have at it. The Roasted Potatoes were also good enough to enjoy as a Main. Really crunchy nuggets with creamy centers. This place not only offers fine comida de la gente, the restaurant is efficient but doesn't rush. Want to enjoy sobremesa? (relaxing time after dinner to discuss politics, religion, sex and gossip about the people you've just dined with). Sobremesa (literally means around the table) is a charming and civilized concept. A bit underwhelmed with the flavors. Our favorites were the choclos asados (grilled corn) and ñoqui con estofado (gnocchi with short rib) but even then, it wasn't something we'd come back for. I came to Melbec with my husband for a date night and it reminded me why we love this place so much. Parking can be a bit tricky since it's on the corner and it is on an one way street, but once you're inside, it's totally worth it. This place is super cozy and romantic. We started with their empanadas (a must), then he had the homemade spinach stuffed ravioli and I got the short rib pasta. Everything was so delicious. I made a reservation here for a birthday dinner and it was great! we did get there 20 min after our time and the host seemed a little upset but the waitress made up for it! She was great. I did apologize for the delay. Our friend was stuck in traffic on the freeway. That's besides the point. The steak here was pretty good! I do like my seasonings a little on the extra side so I felt like it lacked flavor but the steak was still juicy and delicious. It's nice restaurant that gives you the vibes of a place that should be in Downtown Pasadena but It's tucked away on Green Street, east of Downtown Pasadena. The food has been amazing both times. The arroz de mariscos is tasty and go the second time we are shared the tabla! All 3 meats were cooked exactly as ordered a flavorful. the bone marrow was sooo good too. The steaks I've had: Ojo De Bife Al Chimichurri is so flavorful. It is usually my favorite but not always. bife de chorizo, lomo à la parrilla, and ojo de bife - they are all so perfectly what they are it's impossible to play favorites for too long. I was pleasantly surprised that this place was open during Christmas (as many restaurants close on Christmas Day). I was able to make a reservation through OpenTable, which was very simple and user-friendly. Because I had the reservation, we were seated right away (so highly recommend making reservations ahead of time). The ambiance is very romantic and cozy, and they ornamented the place very well with lots of Christmas decorations. For starters, I ordered the Pulpo Al Aji Amarillo (grilled Mediterranean octopus), which was grilled to perfection! For the main, I ordered the Arroz Con Mariscos For One (seafood paella) and the Tabla Mixta. For the Tabla Mixta, you're able to choose two cuts (or more), so I opted for the Entraña (USDA skirt steak) and the Ojo De Bife (Argentinean Rib Eye). I absolutely enjoyed the Rib Eye with my sides of mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. To end the night, I ordered crepes that came with a Nutella spread, strawberries, bananas, and a side of vanilla ice cream. The service was immaculate and staff was attentive, and ensuring that each dish was served in a timely fashion. He and the staff were excellent and were attentive to our needs and whenever we needed something at our table he was right there to assist us. My birthday celebration continues, this time I was treated to Malbec. Good choice! Been here several times when I worked in Pasadena and always had a great experience. Plentiful street parking available. The dining room is small, and there's also outside seating and another room for larger parties. Suggested a bottle of malbec to get our palettes in motion. Marcelo Palleriti Malbec paired perfectly with our meal. Nice bold rich tasting red wine. Everyone enjoyed the complimentary bread with chimichurri sauce, so addictingly good. We shared a variety of empanadas (beef, spicy beef, chicken, spinach and cheese) for appetizers and they were all excellent. It arrived piping hot and crisp on the outside. Spinach and cheese were standout. The bone marrow with flat bread was amazing. It was rich and fatty, roasted to perfection. For entrée, we ordered the Arroz con Mariscos (seafood paella), rib eye steak (ojo de bife), New York steak and sorrentinos pasta. Arroz con Mariscos was solid and on point. Seafood tasted fresh and bursting with flavor, even octopus was tender. Good portion and perfect for sharing. Sorrentinos pasta was rich and satisfying. The steaks arrived beautifully charred and cooked to perfect medium. Both came with 3 types of chimichurri sauce, which really enhances the flavor of the steak. Dessert was fantastic. The decaf cappuccino was PERFECT I'm not going to take stars off for it, but I'm 100% sure there used to be YUCCA fries and Maduros used to be on the menu. This was my first time trying Argentinean steak, and I was really pleased! The steaks are 16oz and for the price it's really good value compared to other steakhouses I've been to. We got the ribeye and New York and asked for medium rare, and to our astonishment this might be the first time our steaks were actually cooked to the our specification. The ribeye was super tender, I enjoyed this a lot more than the New York which was tougher, but that was to be expected. I liked how the edges on both were slightly charred. I also got the ceviche with tuna and octopus, and this was probably my favorite dish of the night. The tuna was so fresh along with the other ingredients, and the octopus had a nice firm texture. Loved the chips! We got the crepes for dessert since our waiter said that was their best seller. To be honest, I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream a lot more, haha, but I still enjoyed the chewy texture of the crepes. Like the steaks, the crepes also had charred edges which gave it an extra crunch. I ordered spicy beef empanadas, cheese and corn empanadas, skirt steak which came along with a salad, grilled pacific sole, and grilled skirt steak. My favorites were the corn and cheese empanadas and the sole. The sole was tender and flavorful. I thought the steak could have been more tender and maybe less salt on the spicy beef empanadas. We started with the Remolachas y Peras, which served as our salad, and it was fresh and flavorful. After that, there was a noticeable wait before the rest of the food arrived. The Lomo wrapped with applewood bacon, hongos provenzal, and puré de papas took quite a long time to come out. At one point, I jokingly said to my date, "What are they doing back there, fetching the cow?" It was a busy Saturday night, so the delay wasn't entirely surprising, but it was definitely felt. Once the food arrived, it was worth the wait. The Lomo, cooked medium rare, was hands down my favorite so juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The sides were comforting and well-prepared, and everything came with a side of warm bread, which was a nice touch. Our reservation was at 6:15 pm, and they seated me right away while my date went to look for parking, which was a pain in that area on a Saturday evening. If you're wearing heels, I highly recommend having your date drop you off first while they circle for parking. Service was mostly fine, but the waiter rubbed me the wrong way toward the end of the night. I was set on ordering all three desserts, and he kept questioning me, then looked to my date as if he needed to approve. That felt unnecessary as he shouldn't assume that I needed approval from my date. Overall, the food especially the steak was delicious, and I'd come back for that alone. Malbec is an Argentinian restaurant located in the heart of Pasadena offering traditional Argentinian / Spanish fare in a cozy setting. Our family came on New Year's Day in the early evening. We were greeted and chose a table in a quiet corner; the restaurant is austere, classic, simple, dimly lit, and cozy. After an initial offering of bread and seasoned olive oil we shared the Arroz Con Mariscos for Two ($79), essentially a large seafood paella. The paella was perfect, with excellent, flavorful rice and vegetables, and an appropriate amount of seafood, with a generous supply of calamari and octopus and a smaller, but appropriate, number of scallops, shrimp, and mussels. This was followed by the Costillitas de Cordero - 18oz of Lamb Chops ($58), which were excellent; 4 generous rib chop pieces, 3 cooked to a perfect medium rare (1 overcooked to a medium well) and seasoned perfectly. They were paired with an included Porcini sauce, a Madeira wine and mushroom mixture which I found unremarkable, and didn't add much to the savory chops. We completed with the Panqueques de Dulce de Leche ($16) a pair of crepes drenched in delicious chocolate and caramel for a rich, flawless flavor, which were paired with ice cream and fresh fruit. Service was friendly and appropriate. Value, as above, was a little lacking; while the food was great, in my opinion each item was priced about 10-20% higher than justified, especially for a restaurant off the main Pasadena beat. We planned my daughter bd at Malbec. The restaurant inside look good. I ordered Fetucchines Con Salmon. It's pasta with Salmon, a little spicy, and a lot of capers and olives. It's delicious. For appetizer, I had Fried Calamari/shrimp/mushrooms. Love it. For dessert, I had crème brûlée. Very good not too sweet. Service is good. My wife and I had dinner at Malbec in Pasadena last Friday night to celebrate my birthday. She had been there before, but it was my first visit. We had an 8:15 reservation and arrived right on time. I love good Brussels sprouts and had even asked the server how they were before ordering. He said they were really good, but unfortunately that was not our experience. They had almost no seasoning, were not crispy at all, and tasted more boiled than roasted. The texture was mushy and there was nothing about them that made them appealing. We had Brussels sprouts the weekend before at another restaurant that were incredible with cranberries, almonds, and great flavor, so the difference really stood out. Our server was very nice about it and took them back without any issue. For entrees, I had the ravioli scarpara, and my wife ordered a pasta dish with beef, although I cannot remember the exact name. Her dish was good, but I really enjoyed the ravioli. It was flavorful, served hot, and tasted fresh. For dessert, we shared a crepe with pistachio ice cream, which was a nice way to finish the meal. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and felt the prices were reasonable for the ambiance and quality of food. Service was a little slow at times, especially when we were waiting for the check, but it was a Friday evening and it did not take away from the night. It had been a while that we had gone there. Why did we wait that long? Everything was very nice. We were a larger group but they arranged a nice table for us. The staff was very attentive. The food was very delicious, at least on my plate with a medium-rare steak which was wonderful and looked with awe at a steak on another plate that per that patron's request had been done more than well-done ... But they really fulfill any reasonable wish - even against better knowledge. I enjoyed every single dish. PREVIOUS REVIEW I did like this Malbec place a lot! For many reasons such as the waiter's friendliness, the food - but I guess the most charming aspect was the touch of Non-American relaxedness where sitting down for dinner does serve more than just filling the stomach. Where there is no push to devour by the clock and pull out the credit card before the last bite is down. But let's face it, the food was great: Spinach Empanada and Empanada Dinner, Mollejas Champagne, Entrana al Chimichurri, Brochette, Ojo de bife, and for the table to share some Mushrooms Provenzal, Creamed Spinach and Cebiche Trio ... Everything was to the point, nicely presented and definitely not shabby. We just had dinner at Malbec Argentinian cuisine and they were excellent as expected. We have been trying to come to this restaurant for a long time and we made it tonight. Strongly recommended. Updating the review to include an appetizer you must try - grilled octopus! I've had octopus before but it never made me want to make octopus a go to item. Well, this dish changed my mind! The octopus was grilled to perfection and accompanied by roasted potatoes and an aioli sauce. All of the flavors complimented each other and I will definitely be reordering this item again. Also, for those of you who grew up with your mom making you flan out of a box, you must try the flan here. This isn't a diss but a compliment as it is nostalgic. IFYKYK. I did ask if they used the box mix and I was told it was made fresh daily but not from a box lolz. I had to know. This flan is perfect, it is not too heavy like some versions are. These clams were delicious! Oh I'm still dreaming about them. The food was great here. We came for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed. The waiter was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Water was always filled. I wish I got to try the drinks here but we only had wine. There is lots of indoor seating as well as seating at the bar and outside. It's dimly light inside where we were seating giving it a very intimate feeling. read more

We got the burrata and prosciutto, the asada de tira and entrana a la parill, arroz con mariscos paella, and the Pulpo Al Aji Amarillo, as well as others that I forget! Food was solid! I hadn't been back to Malbec for maybe 10 years! So glad I spontaneously popped in on Friday. Just needed a quick bite before a showing next door. I was able to make a reservation for a slot within ten minutes. We were seated right away - ordered a salad and the short ribs. SO tasty. Just like I remember from before :) our waitress, Rosa, was amazing. She was fast, super helpful, great recommendations, and lovely personality. I can't remember the name of the salad we ordered, but it was delicious. Blue cheese, beets, arugula, pears, YUM! The portion was big, great for sharing. Can't wait to return. read more

We went for a very late birthday dinner celebration for my sister. First off, very delicious, high quality, super nice service, dog friendly, and lots of food. For fine dining, we're really glad we can sit outside and bring our dog so he won't be left out at home. Inside is very dark, your classic fine dining ambiance/environment. We basically stuffed our face for a dinner lol. Ordered a lot of food! The ones that are not included in the photos are Lenguado, chicken, paella, pulpo and sangria. Lenguado is my favorite! It's one of the best sole I've eaten in my entire life. That lemon carper sauce is life changing. Not to be dramatic! I like it that much! You have to order seafood dishes!!! They know their seafood! Burrata is also super delicious. I usually do not eat burrata or prosciutto that much because of how salty it is. Here, i finish the plate lol. It was that good. The only thing I was disappointed was the 4lb tomahawk steak. I think they up sales you by making you preorder and blah blah over the phone but when it arrives, it's was good... not great. I've had better tomahawk steak...also kinda toooooooo fatty to my. It's all fat. Also I think this one is the most expensive dish in their food menu. Would not order ever again . It was like 60% fat in that 4 lbs of meat...kinda disappointed Still very delicious. Overall I will come back for the seafood and lunch menus sometime. Also, I felt great after eating that much food. We celebrated New Years Eve here at Malbec and it was also our first time dining here after hearing so many great things about the food! We had a party of six for 9:15 pm which is a pretty late dinner, but I snagged a reservation earlier that day. When we arrived, there was a small crowd outside of the restaurant and we wait about 15 mins before getting seated. The inside ambience was very cozy, romantic, and classy. Maybe also since it was NYE, guests were dressed very nice. We ordered the Espresso Martini and two of the NYE special drinks - French 75 and a festive mojito. The Espresso Martini was one of the best we've had! Very good balanced drink with foam. I loved my French 75 too, which was perfectly light. Our favorite part of the meal were the apps. We got the mussels, calamari, octopus which were all delicious. The girls split the arroz con mariscos for two (which fed way more than two people), and was their version of paella. It was a wetter consistency that we actually liked. The boys all got steaks, but their steaks were either overdone or too raw, except for one which was perfect. I think this was because the evening was very busy so I'd give it a pass. The waiter took my bfs steak back to cook a bit more and re-plated it very nicely. For dessert, we got the crepes and they were delicious with the vanilla ice cream. All in all, we had a very good experience here! Would return and try other dishes. read more
