Went to Hobby Lobby in Modesto last night, I was there for about 2 1/2 hours... the upside I found so much stuff that I loved. However the downside is customer service was crappy, I interacted with 5 associates and only one graciously helped the others not so much... Hobby Lobby has always been an amazing store to shop at. It's not often that I have a chance to shop at Hobby Lobby being its a bit far from where we live. Being the Holidays myself and two of my girlfriends had dinner last week in Modesto and an hour to spend in Hobby a lobby to do Christmas Shopping. Now I guessing we were an immediate target due to our tattoos that cover our arms hands and fingers and big purses we just so happen to carry! For the 30 min we were shopping we were followed around by at least 4 different employees not letting us out of sight and making it very apparent that they thought our intentions were to not purchase the merchandise we had in hand . Passing judgement or profiling at its finest. But wait it doesn't end there. The following week my Husband and I returned to this very same store to find a bible case or cover In Hopes that we would not run into the same problem we had the following week. WRONG!! My husband has tattoos on his head and may seem unapproachable to most however we both are Christian and our faith is strong. We were followed by a women and at one point I turned my head and she was standing starring at me. I am not one to voice my opinion or call anyone out but at this time I asked her "is there a problem "? She said yes her store has a lot of problems" I then told her how I was made to feel last week. She was rude unprofessional tacky and straight up disrespectful replying " and you came back again to feel uncomfortable , now your making me think I should worry about you" I told her "this is supposed to be a store ran by Christians and this is how I'm treated" her response was " Ya and the people who shop here are Christian" implying that I was not. My husband also confronted her and she said she would apologize but of course being the disrespectful no class haven little girl she was , she chose not to apologize. This was Friday evening 12 /20 about 6:30 PM. This girl I believe was a manager or undercover security, Hispanic with a tattoo on her neck or behind the ear. I guess someone should have been following her around making sure she did her job right which clearly she isn't. Bottom line , this girl didn't like that I put her on blast voiced how I felt and my thoughts of how wrong she was. By the behavior she displayed its clear she needs more training on customer service skills , how not to be ratchet, have class , and keep your hood street life checked at the door before clocking in. The store has a great selection of merchandise and has great sales. The customer service has been terrible every time I go in so don't go as often as I might otherwise. Was there yesterday for a framing mat and noticed some wind spinners on the wall at the front of the store at 75% off. Tried to find someone to assist me as they were so high up on the wall they couldn't be reached. Finally asked a girl at a closed register if she could call for some assistance for me. She did, no one came and although I was about 10 feet away from her she never seemed to notice not only was I standing there for along time, now two other customers also wanted some. I asked her again for assistance and she said the girl was on break. So the entire time us customers are waiting thinking someone was coming, she knew no one was coming but let us stand there. without saying a word, so rude! Everytime I come into the store I am disappointed. It's like a Home Depot of craft stores there's no one there to help you ever! Every time I've gone there I've gotten ripped off every single time. While I loved visiting this store in other states, I'm a little disappointed at the Modesto branch. My grandmother and I went here together when it first opened, and were able to get a lot of things with the grand-opening sales. However, when we went back last month, the prices were outrageous! The woman that was supposed to be helping customers in the yarn section was very rude, and there were only two checkout lanes open, which was odd since it was the day after Xmas. We spent three bucks on a carton of orange candies to angrily demolish on the way home. Despite all of this, I do still like the store, and I love their private yarn, but at those prices, I doubt we'll make the 45m jaunt again. read more

I am a 68 yr old shopper and have had a few bad shopping experiences but this Modesto store is the worst of the worst when it comes to its relationship with its customer base. Without going into great detail this is about a small child allowed to disrupt others' shopping while mother was continuously on the phone (ran into them several times in the store). When I asked the mother to see what this neglected child was doing she flared at me calling me an old lady who should mind her own business and reported ME to management for harassing her child. When I approached management, Sandy, she told me to "be quiet and stand over there.". I responded in disbelief " I beg your pardon?". Well this time she repeated it loudly in front of 2 lines if people. I have never experienced this type of humiliation. I consider myself someone who believes in God and Country and this customer believes this store needs customer service training. If you like building model cars and doing scrap booking and love stickers, this is your place. But it isn't a complete hobby lobby. I only gave two stars because of the vast selection of the party stuff they have, and the fact that they had everything I was looking for (even though I still didn't end up buying some of the things I needed here because they're so expensive) but the entire experience was not a good one. Hobby lobby... The place where you'll see more employees outside on brake than inside helping or manning more than two open checkout lanes!! I can't help myself from coming back lol. I love their fabric selection and it's close to where I live. The prices are a little high but I see that as a connivence fee :) the Isles are not marked so you find yourself just wondering... I guess that's how they get you to buy stuff lol. The employees are poorly managed and or not trained properly. But thankfully I don't like to be bothered while I'm shopping... Modesto location. I had to wait in long line while employees stood around in the front. They have a mouse trap under the cash register RIGHT NEXT to all the candy and bagging area. My FB friends found that picture disgusting. The computers they have a slow, unless it the employees that are slow. The manager in the front was standing up front talking to employees. I was in line for 15 minutes before he called up backup cashiers, he had to call THREE times before they appeared up front. read more

I would have to agree with several others that this place is a crafters dream! The selection for every hobby is vast and I especially loved the variety in the Christmas decor section. Another star for the great sale prices. And another for the prime location on McHenry. Unfortunately it loses a star for the burly, loss prevention guy that just so happened to be in every part of the store that I was. It was my first time in the place so I wandered around in amazement for half an hour. But literally every time I looked up he was there; even when I checked out with my $120 worth of decor. Smh. Another lost star for the deplorable service from MARIE in the fabric section. First she misdirected me to the product I was looking for. (I'm starting to think maybe purposefully because the peacock feathers that I asked her about were a couple of aisles from her. She sent me to a whole separate part of the store...) I returned and asked for a yard of elastic trim. She cut it and then, I kid you not, half-tossed/half-slid the trim across the table to me with a straight-faced "here you go" or something like that. That's what she actually did. It was so absurdly rude I almost laughed a little but didn't because it's not funny. It's sad that she represents customer service for an otherwise pretty cool store. First time visit, and probably the last. I passed by more than 1 employee - at least 5 and not once did any of them acknowledge me. A male near the front door did not even look up as I entered the door for the first time. The fabric store had a surly woman who acted put out when a customer asked about a roll of upholstery fabric. I am of the age of many of the folks in this store, and looking for a job. I have an extensive customer service background and I was appalled at the poor attitudes. Sad to say that they are probably a product of poor, unhappy management and or poor supervision by equally unhappy bosses or supervisors. Nice stuff, beautiful things - a bit large and while neat and clean, it is understaffed. BTW - I am venturing into a new small business and looking for things to help drive sales with cute packaging etc. I am re-considering mail order options and wholesale places out of town because I don't feel my business is valued at this store. read more

Long line at check out. I mean LONG. They had three lines that looked open that had people in line, then when we got closer we saw that the sign was up saying the register was closed. All three-closed. Someone should have told us and the people waiting that we were not going to get to check out. There was only one line open and the line was SO LONG. I mean so long I have never seen a line so long in a store before because most people don't have the nerve to provide customer service that is THAT bad. Aside from the line at checkout, it is a huge store with tons of stuff but there are no signs anywhere telling you where things are or what is in each isle. You have to wonder around (and no, I saw not one employee in the store) to find what you are looking for. Once I found the paper/stickers/stamps department, they had a horrible selection. I went for card stock and envelopes mainly and all I wanted was ivory card-stock with matching envelopes. They had none. I mean none. Pretty basic for an art supply store, right? Anyway, after waiting in line for 10 minutes just to be told she was closing the line (and same story for the two lines next to us) and the only open line was SO LONG, I decided to say a little something to the manager that was, instead of opening a register, closing one. I just said that it is too bad the line was so long because I just put my stuff down and was leaving. She told me I should have seen the sign up saying the line was closed. Rude. She was rude. The line was too long to see the closed sign until AFTER I waited 10 minutes. I am sure she was stressed, but if she had acted like she gave a crap about my wasted time, I might have considered going back and giving that place another shot. Don't make the mistake that I did and not call before you drive several miles only to discover that among the "hobbies" in the Hobby Lobby, are NOT model airplanes, R/C stuff and other traditional "hobby shop" goodies. I am definitely underwhelmed by Hobby Lobby. The store is massive, so you would think they have an awesome supply of crafty goodies. In reality, I've walked out empty-handed almost every time I've gone in (5-6 times now). A large percentage of the store is occupied by floral and home-decor pieces instead of actual supplies (i. e. fabric, paint, paper, patterns, etc). The fabric selection is rather anemic, checkout service is slow, and the customer service is indifferent. I wanted so badly to like Hobby Lobby... but it disappoints. read more

I am a fan of Hobby Lobby. I see that a lot of negative reviews talk about sticking with Michaels, but I have always had such awful experiences at Michaels. As soon as Hobby Lobby opened, I knew I would never turn away from them! I love the variety! It definitely is a store where you need time to wander and take it all in. Now that I am a regular customer I know where everything is, or just about. :) I love the prices, all the sales and coupons! I save so much money for event planning and home decor. The customer service can be hit or miss, sometimes every employee asks me if I need help and sometimes none, but no one has ever turned me away if I had a question or acted rude to me. I dont why people become upset just because someone didnt address them. We are grown human beings, if you need help, just ask. I actually dislike being asked every few steps if I need help. I agree that the lines have started to become longer and longer, but that is because they are awesome! I think the employees would appreciate a more updated check out system and so would the customers, but hopefully that will come with time. :) Hobby Lobby forever!!! read more

5 stars for Jason & Abel that helped making a negative situation a positive outcome. I bought 20 spools of ribbon last week when they were 50% off. I noticed a few days later that the cashier that rang me up put it under paper crafts & I only received 30% off. I called the store and the associate I spoke with apologized and said bring my receipt in anytime and they can adjust it no issue. When I got to the register the employee called for a manager. When she approached she was not polite in the slightest. I explained to her the situation. She said since I didn't bring the ribbon in she couldn't prove that I actually bought ribbon (basically accusing me of trying to get 50% off something other than ribbon) she said I needed to bring the ribbon in which I explained I have already made bows and sold the bows. I was extremely calm the entire time. What upset me the most is that she accused me of lying. She took my receipt and said she could have someone verify I actually bought the ribbon which was totally fine. She said it would take awhile and I asked if I could leave my number and they could call me back once they reviewed the cameras because I couldn't wait around I have my baby with me. She said she couldn't keep my receipt because it was a "liability"? And handed me back my receipt and asked if I wanted to come back when I had more time. I was honestly dumbfounded about the entire situation. I am a manager in retail and I understand these types of situations and deal with them all the time. It take a few minutes to pull cameras when I have the receipt which states the time and cashier, but I guess she didn't want to do so for me for unknown reasons. I called the store manager, Jason, and he called me back within 5 minutes after reviewing the cameras and apologized - he had reviewed cameras and saw the cashier had rang me up incorrectly (my point exactly) and he could adjust the items with no issues. The entire situation could of been avoided if the manager at the front end could of took a few minutes to help a customer instead of accusing me and making it seem like it would take a long time to review the situation. Again, thank you to Jason and Abel for handling a simple situation that was easily resolved with grace & dignity. I'm not sure what is going on with the employees of Hobby lobby, but it's obvious they are simply not happy! They treat customers badly and I'm sure this is probably because they are not being treated well. For a business that boasts about being 'Christian' with all those crosses everywhere and closed on Sundays, they sure treat customers very unchristian like. I was there last Saturday trying to buy some silk flowers and while waiting in check-out line, the lady in front of me was purchasing lots of little things and apparently the discount she normally received was expired or something along those lines. I decided to ask the cashier if it was going to take a while so I can just move to another line. Boy was that the wrong question to ask! Dawn the cashier decided that crucifying me is the best punishment for having the audacity to ask such a question. Very rudely and with a loud voice snapped at me with "well, that's up to you"! Clearly she was trying to get everyone's attention and play the victim of a rude customer. So I quietly told her "that's not what I asked you". So she gave me a dirty look and snapped "I'm almost done"! Unfortunately I made the mistake of staying in that line, because Dawn suddenly gave me a shocking session of stare-down!! I couldn't believe my eyes! She stared right into my eyes for 10 seconds like she's getting ready to attack me... she was pretty much attempting to intimidate me and daring me to open my mouth so she can shred me to pieces!!! It was a really weird and scary experience. I asked her name and left the store. My mom who was with me and waiting, saw the whole thing and said, we're never coming back here again. My mom also thought Dawn may have been on Drugs or something because she wasn't behaving normal... The other experience I had was at another location when I got accused of attempting to return a used $7 paint jar! The entire store staff and the manager gathered to have a Kumbaya moment over the paint jar and trying to decide if returning it would be a big sin in the eyes of the lord!! At least that's what they made it seem like... it was quite an embarrassing moment to say the least. I tried to explain to the manager that when I purchased the paint it was already open and to prove my point, all he had to do was walk over to the pain section with me and I will show him at least 30 other paint jars that were in the same exact condition as the one I was trying to return - all of them open with receded paint to the bottom of the jar because they are OLD!! Customers open paint jars and Hobby Lobby has no problem selling them as a new item, however, the minute you try to return it, you become the sinner who's trying to cheat them! What I don't understand is, how come it's okay to sell the item as is, but it's not okay to return it?! Sounds like double-standards to me! Is that what a Christian establishment does? I'm a Christian myself, let's just say these people give Christianity a really bad name! read more
