My experience in this store started off great, but ended in a huge disappointment and will never return! The store advertised "free" commumion/confirmation cards. I needed and found two cards. Another sign read "buy 3 cards, get 4th free". I found 4 cards in this section. I also picked up another 2 cards at regular price. When I got to the register I had the cards facing upwards and placed them in three different stacks. This way the clerk could see what cards I was purchasing. We even discussed the "free" cards. The clerk took all the cards and turned them over and restacked them. The clerk rung me up and I paid. I went to my car and looked over my receipt. The clerk charged me for the two "free" cards and for the free 4th card. Approx a $9 overcharge. I "immediately" went back into the store to let the clerk know that I was overcharged. She reluctantly wanted to give me a refund for the 2 cards that were supposed to be free, but she said that it was my (the customers) responsibility to tell her/the clerk about the 4th card being free at the time of purchasing them and she was not going to reimburse me for this card. I reminded her that I "did" have my cards in stacks and faced upwards when I came to the register to pay for them. Also, if Marcy's Hallmark store expects for their customers to have to tell their clerks all the sale prices then there should be a sign stating "Customers responsibility to tell clerk the prices". By this time I was feeling that this business was making me feel that I had to beg for my reimbursement instead of them graciously correcting their error for overcharging me. I finally just left and told the clerk that I will never shop here again. If this is the way they treat their customers, especially when they are in the wrong...I can only warn others. The selection of cards, wrapping paper, and gift bags is good, and the customer service was fine. I have a small complaint about their gifts; they sell socks that are outdated and sexist. There are socks in women's sizes with "nurse" and hairstylist emblems on them, and socks in men's sizes with "lawyer" and doctor emblems on them. It would be nice if businesses could recognize that many doctors and lawyers (and engineers, executives) are in fact women. And many nurses and hairstylists are men. I agree about the bad service. First off, the younger woman who rang me up was very nice. She's the only reason for 2 stars. I hadn't been in to a Hallmark store in years. I decided to stop it after my cancer treatment to get some Christmas cards, since I hadn't seen what I like at mass retailers. The boxed card selection was pretty limited, and leaned more toward more traditional. Ok, getting a bit closer to Christmas so not a big deal. Decided to get a few Jelly Bellies. The older lady was walking by the end of the aisle as I was scooping some & practically yelled at me that the lid will stay up on its own, i don't need to hold it halfway open. Um, ok. Thanks for embarrassing the hell out of me over something that was SO not a big deal! At that point, I chose to just take what I had so far, and not select any more. As I was being rung up by the nicer, younger employee, and elderly woman asked the same one who'd yelled at me, something about how to use a coupon or something on her smart phone. The employee was very short with her, telling her that she (the employee) doesn't know "anything about those things", that she's probably the "only person in the world" without a cell phone. True as that "may" be, it was an old lady AND a customer. It could have been handled with more class & courtesy. Too bad this place has gone so downhill. read more

I walked into the McHenry Village Hallmark store to purchase two birthday cards for my parents who celebrate the same birthday. Unfortunately, when I walked into this store I was not greeted as the retail clerk was busy talking politics with two other customers. The customers and clerk were talking about masks and how the Coronavirus is just a big joke. As I am concerned for the health and well being of others and my own children, I choose to wear a mask. The customers began shopping and began criticizing me for wearing a mask. They made comments to the clerk and said look she is touching her phone and has her wallet out and spreading her germs all over the place, as if I didn't speak English. I am Hispanic and that was very uncomfortable and very insensitive at a time when there is so much going on in the world. The clerk was agreeing with them and I left without purchasing anything. HIGHLY reccmond amy's hallmark on mchenry. if you're looking for SQUISHMALLOWS do NOOOTTT come here at all. don't even consider it. paid $52 for a Grogu squish just to find out Costco sells them for $20 and regular squishmallows for $10 while hallmark sells them for $25-30. called within 20 minutes of buying it and I couldn't return it because i "touched" it, as if i didn't touch everything else in the store without buying it. I totally get y'all need to make money, but going to local Costco to buy them out and raise the price by THEREE times is absurd. You should absolutely be ashamed and embarrassed taking advantage of your customers like that while there's a whole entire pandemic going on. I see why you have 2.5 stars, you don't deserve any of them for the way you rip people off for supporting your business. Two stars is strictly for merchandise selection. My 8 year old daughter, my boyfriend, and I went in today to look for a Disney ornament for a wedding gift. We were in there about 5 minutes browsing the ornaments when a lady suddenly appeared to my left and asked if we needed help. I said no, we are browsing the ornaments. My daughter and I were pressing buttons on the sample ornaments to listen to them and since she stayed right up on us just staring I thought maybe we were not supposed to touch them but I looked for signs and didn't see any so I did not tell her to stop because she wasn't being obnoxious, she was simply showing me what each one did. The lady had her laser eyes directed to me but I was trying to distract my kid from the glare. I asked if there were any more Disney ornaments and the lady said around the corner. Now, there were more than 5 other customers in the store browsing freely, without the death glare I was receiving. My boyfriend walked away annoyed with the lady and thinking he was the cause but the lady did not leave my side until a customer approached the register and she HAD to. I found him and told him we were leaving because I was uncomfortable and annoyed. He said he was too and that she made him feel like a criminal. Luckily my child was oblivious to it all. I have managed the Santa Claus photo set in the Village for the last 3 years. I have come into this store on many breaks just to browse. I have come in to buy at times. I have NEVER been treated as I was today and she is lucky I had my child with me or I would have caused a scene because we did absolutely nothing to deserve the death glare we received. I had every intention to spend money in this snooty store today but never again! Eventually there will be no more snooty customers and they will go away unable to adapt to a new customer base. Came in the other day and a young lady was helping us out, we put a lot of merchandise on the counter and she needed to go get a box for a glass. So when she got back, very quickly by the way, an older ruder lady at the register asked her if we were being helped and then ushered the customer behind us into our place regardless of what was actually happening. As if she wasn't even trying to co operate. Forcing us to transfer all of our items to the next register. She was very rude about it all! It seemed very unprofessional. Everything else was fine but all it takes is one stick in the mud to ruin an otherwise nice experience. If I recall it's the same lady who's been there for years! Kudos to the younger woman. Nice store but they will not give cash refunds only store credit. I don't like that policy! I live out of the area so now I have to drive over an hour to use my credit since I couldn't find anything I wanted today! The lady refused to make an exception for me since I live so far away. Walked in to purchase Christmas cards and there wasn't too much of a variety to choose from. It's only Dec. 5th!! As I checked out, the employee asks, "You're not 55 or older are you?" Um, NO!!!!
