I used to like ordering from this place. I often order for my staff at lunch and place large orders (17-20 orders) at a time. I recently asked for dressing on the side of 1 of the salads. It came with dressing on it. We asked for it to be corrected, which seemed like a pretty easy fix. The response was "Nobody said dressing on the side". When you're spending as much money as we were on a order of this size it's expected for the answer to be "yes, we'll fix that, no problem". Decent food but poor customer service. Won't be returning. read more

Just tried this cute place out the other night for the first time! Got the enchiladas with the green sauce and they were pretty good. The chicken seemed a little dry however which is why I'm give a 4 star. Otherwise it was good, fast service and cute little place read more

This place was great! The food was delicious and the decorations were awesome! Definitely recommend.

Hobbit Cafe is more than a gimmick. It is honestly great food too. I eat here once or twice a week with a coworker and have often brought my family in for the weekend brunch. I have never once had a bad experience here and frequently recommend it to my friends. It may not look like much from the outside, but I assure you the food and service are first-rate. read more

I came here only to drink, so no food related advice here! Their beer selection is near perfect. This bar/cafe just celebrated 45 years, so it say they know what they're doing. Multiple categories of different styles of beer, with each section being comprised of beers from around mostly Texas, and the most Houston beer I've seen anywhere. read more

Hobbit Cafe - Saison beer from buffalo bayou brewing company. This sour beer is perfect for the intense heat and humidity of Houston, TX in June. - Burgers Near Me - Houston, Texas

The Hobbit Cafe has been around for a long time - back to the 1970s when it was called "The Hobbit Hole" and it has survived in the cutthroat Houston restaurant scene because of the quality of its food and the relaxed atmosphere. Example: The best guacamole in Houston is not to be found at a Tex-Mex or Mexican restaurant. The best guacamole in Houston is to be found at the Hobbit Cafe. Although they do have a varied menu, the Hobbit Cafe is best known for its sandwiches. Each sandwich is named after a character from the books. My favorite is the Bilbo. The Bilbo is a guacamole sandwich! It's amazing. My girlfriend's favorite is the Dwalin (curried chicken). The sandwiches are huge and the bread delicious. This time, however, I didn't have a sandwich - I had the portabello mushroom fajitas. That's right - fajitas without meat - but it isn't missed because the portabello mushrooms are so good. Also on the platter were sizzling red peppers and onions, rice, black beans, guacamole, and pico di gayo. The Hobbit Cafe has an excellent beer selection, including a few on draught Belgian beers. This time I had the Blanche de Bruxelles and it went well with the fajitas. read more

I recently visited with a couple of friends and we really enjoyed it! It's definitely a little bit different with the whole Lord of the Rings theme and also has a "hip" clientele. While I wouldn't describe myself as one of those people, I did not feel uncomfortable at all. The three of us each ordered a sandwich: Turkey BLT, the Frodo, and one other one I can't recall the name off (turkey, avocado, lettuce, tomato). They did take a surprisingly long amount of time to come out..they are only sandwiches. But they were so good when they did come! We were there for dinner and these sandwiches were perfect because they seemed more like an evening meal than a lunch. We each got the chips, carrots and fries as our sides. None of which were exceptional but all were decent. Overall, we had a nice dinner but it wasn't anything great. Pretty standard but filling sandwiches and rather decent service. Parking can be an issue with the crowded lot but we were able to snag a spot up front. read more

I loved this place long before I ever read The Hobbit or the LoTR series. My parents introduced us to this resturant when my brothers & I were little and not much has changed. The food has always been in massive portions and always tasted soo good going down. The last time I went I had the salmon burger and man-oh-man was amazing! It's not on the menu but you can order sweet potatoe fries. All of the sandwhich's are huge, they defiantely don't skimp you on anything! The wraps are pretty good & it was as large as my face! Thier fish taco's are rather good as well! The only thing I was not impressed with was the omlette for brunch. Everything else I have had here has been top notch amazing. The service has always been incredibly helpful and friendly. They come by often, but not often enough to annoy you. I can never get enough of this place! The only downfall is there is hardly any parking here, either get there early or park down the street & walk. Either way the food is worth the lack of parking! read more

Two words: MAHI. SANDWICH. Holy bajolies is that thing good! My boyfriend loves the burgers and the portions are pretty big. The downside is that parking is somewhat limited and the dining area is crowded, both inside and out, but I find that's pretty typical for Montrose area restaurants. Still, the Mahi sandwich is worth it. We only went a few times when we lived in Montrose (mainly because it's just so hard to get in there) but we still talk about the mahi sandwich. I think that means we'll be back. read more

I wouldn't say this is the best place in the world, but it's also not terrible. I got some kind of burger with Guacamole (can't remember which). Avocado, to be more exact. The burger was quite generous, made to order, and messy as hell, which I like. I might have appreciated a sandwich toothpick to hold it all together, but they don't offer those. My hands were a mess. Also, the service was quite strange. We were convinced they forgot about us outside, but finally someone showed up. This wasn't really a big deal, since it happens from time to time, but the guy we got was sarcastic. I asked him how I was to eat my burger, considering its size and messiness, and he said "with your hands." What is with this pride? Just figure out my implication: get me a damn oversized toothpick. Good food, okay service. Try the sweet potato fries. Excellent. read more

In the past, I have come here to eat on average every other month. I instantly fell in love with their curry chicken salad and black bean nachos, and always went home with leftovers. But my experience this week was a clincher, if I ever needed one. Cindy was by far, the best service I have received at Hobbit to date, and among the top five service experiences I've had. While my S.O. and I were trying to decide on a burger to share, Cindy not only offered to help us decide on the best method for satisfying each of our cravings- he, bacon and cheese and I, buffalo patty and avocado, but she custom-designed two halves especially for each of us. I'd like to emphasize that we didn't request this, but Cindy went out of her way to do this for us, and genuinely wanted to make our experience enjoyable. I truly hope that the managers know how lucky they are to have Cindy on their serving staff, and how they have earned [at least one] loyal customer for life. read more

I visited here with a friend of mine for lunch, we sat on the patio. The decor is obviously Lord of the Rings plus mystical gypsy eclectic looking. I truly enjoyed the patio and the unique conversation pieces everywhere. We started with some type of cream cheese puff appetizer that was pretty delicious! I had the Curry Sandwich. I will start by saying I am biased because I manage a south east Asian fusion restaurant, but I was not a fan. I was expecting spicy, creamy, goodness and that was not the case. It was cold, and was basically a normal chicken salad sandwich with curry powder on it. Disappointing. My friend had the Greek salad and that was very fresh and yummy. We LOVE the teas!!! It was so yummy and refreshing on a nice day. I can't wait to return, however I'll be trying a different dish! read more

Food was mediocre. Have heard good things about the black bean burger but none of us were in the mood so we got the echilladas which weren't bad but nothing to write home about. The beantillo was just overfilled with black beans. Don't really know how anyone can even that. The servers were all really nice. Unfortunately two out of four of the utensils were dirty n not cleaned properly. The table was sticky and the bathrooms nasty!! Nice ppl but not so clean. read more

I like it a lot that I went two times. the first time I ordered gandalf - I appreciated that they did not skimp on avocado on this dish. BUT, gandalf isn't a good choice for take out. if you want to order take out, avoid this dish. it's best served when hot and fresh. second time was dine-in, the service was great although the server was constantly checking on us, leaving before all the party could get a word in. as if she expected nothing else. try the sweet potato fries; the texture is soft, perfect especially when it is fresh off the fryer. read more

Haven't been disappointed yet. This is a casual joint with a hippie/hobbit feel. They offer a great variety of healthy choices for all types of diets. (They have these cheese rolls that I just love). Awesome portions of healthy comfort food. I had the tropical chicken salad which was very generous and the grilled chicken was fresh and plentiful. My friend got one of the mighty sandwiches- the Bilbo Baggins. We both took food home. This is a fun casual atmosphere with a great beer offering. The parking situation is a bit confusing. It seems three restaurants share the parking lot so it fills quick. I found street parking next to the sign warning me to lock my car and remove all valuables. Comforting. I liked it and will come back when I am looking for a big dose of yummy healthy food. Especially with Ruggles Cafe and Bakery in Rice Village closed for the time being. For dinner and a pint of beer, it will be around $15-$18. read more

Fun beer selection, a menu that's almost too big, adorable quaint decor. The sandwiches we had were good, not amazing, but an amazing sandwich is rare anyway. The servers were all really friendly and casual. I come from an easygoing geeky hippie town in the northeast, and this definitely made me feel right at home. read more

Great food, great service, cool Lord of the Rings decor even though the food doesn't match the theme. I got the blackened catfish with cilantro cream, steamed veggies, and brown rice. The fish and rice were both on point. The sauce was wonderfully creamy and flavorful without being heavy, and the rice cooked just right. The veggies, however, were undercooked. I loved that the serving size was huge for a very reasonable price. Our server was also polite and attentive. Will definitely be back. read more

Went to Hobbit for the first time today with my family. The place is in what appears to be an old house and is completely decorated in Lord of the Rings. I had the cheese enchiladas which were not hot. Rice and beans were nothing special. So for me it was not a great experience. My daughter had the black bean burger which was definitely homemade but fell apart as she ate it. She eventually stopped trying to eat it as a hamburger. Overall the service was average and the food was maybe average. Will probably not go in again. read more

If you are a Hobbit fan, this is the place to visit. Otherwise...i'd say there are other choices. Had the Hickory burger....and sadly the burger was overcooked and dry and lacks any flavor. It was huge though, and got messy so i ate with a fork/knife. Toppings were good and got the fried egg on it too, but it was ok only. read more

Waited over 1 hour to receive our food (wrap and fries), during off hours of a Friday. Was told by the owner, John, that we would be taken care of, just to end up waiting even longer. People came and went among tables around us. The end was even greater, where we had to leave our table to go to the lobby to try to find someone to accept a payment. Then was received with an attitude from the server during payment (Tristian). We will NOT be returning. read more

The idea is nice the execution not so much. The only place where it feels related to hobbits is at the front desk. We fell on a horribly rude waitress that day that didn't even clean up a beer spill she made on the table, even after I asked her. The food was very average, you're basically paying extra for the "decorations". read more

Cute converted old house, has an open patio and kind of like grandma's if your grandma was really into Lord of the Rings vibe inside. Very much just basic American food burgers and sandwiches, with interesting LOTR themed food and themed decor mostly limited to the front. Service was alright. Portions are appropriate but not up to par with their pricing. I ordered their curried egg salad sandwiches (tastes like a curried egg salad) with seasoned fries ($1.50+ upgrade) and received a pretty small portion of the exact same fries I was served by my high school cafeteria, which is to say they were probably from a freezer bag. Disappointing on that note but overall try Hobbit Cafe if you've tried most other restaurants on Kirby and are a fan of healthy American food or LOTR. read more

My favorite sandwich is the slim Dwalin. The classic is huge! It goes well with Vikings Blood Mead. Very nice atmosphere. And no styrofoam! Hooray! read more

Oh my god this is the worst meal I have had in a while. The gazpacho is awful, tastes absolutely nothing like gazpacho with broccoli and celery (?) in it. Also pretty sure it's made with tomato sauce. The nachos came cold with disgusting cheese crust. Jalapeños were probably cut the day before. Nothing tasted fresh. Guac was edible I guess. Fish tacos were overcooked and tasted pretty bad. Restrooms were disgustingly dirty and the waiter messed up the drinks, so the only thing that went well was that service was quick so we were out of there pretty quickly, leaving most of our food behind. read more

So delicious. We come here all the time. Love the salmon burger, the Gandalf, the hobbit wrap, avocado sides! So good.

We enjoyed our waiter and the decor but the food was not good at all. It was the most bland brunch my husband and I have ever had in Houston. Maybe we ordered the wrong things but based on the food the first time I doubt we will ever go back. read more

A few positives and negatives.. Positives: Food was really good!! We stared with the fajita nachos. (HUGE, but very appetizing) My brother LOVED the beer selection. A lot of the meals were named after characters which is cool because it fits in with the atmosphere. Everything came out good, and on time. My family really liked their sandwiches and the fries are AWESOME!! Negatives: It seemed as if they were short staffed. The waitress was running around and was very quick to speak. We asked her a lot of questions (it was our first time) and she seemed to give, "I don't know, what do you think" responses. I ordered the hot soup, which kind of tasted like a wet sock. (Ew) We ordered a bottle at the beginning of the meal. The menu said $11, so we thought it was a steal. When the waitress brought us the check, it said the bottle was $55!!!!! We asked for a menu to check, and the manager (we believe) came out holding the menu and said, "You are confused on our bottle prices?" We mentioned that the menu doesn't show the bottle is $55, and as he looked over with us, he began to defend his case. He said, "Well, we buy the bottle for $26 and we sell it for $55. That's just the pricing." We mentioned that it should say that on the menu, but he was very tense towards us. Instead of saying, "This is an issue we will fix immediately," he said, "We've never had this problem before." So, as you can see, the staff should be more clear and understanding towards the guest. All in all the food was very good. The service was not. Not sure if we will be back. (Unless uber eats is an option) read more

Nice relaxed place, outdoor and indoor seating, very homely, old fashioned inn/pub style feel, with a slightly whimsical touch. very busy on weekends so come early and be prepared to wait. Great avocado burger! Unfortunately we were disturbed by an unruly mob of little people, led by an old wizard, a blonde dude, Ned Stark and the guy from Eastern Promises, they threw some jewelry into my soup, yelling something about something called Sauron, I'm guessing it's an appetizer. Will order it next time. read more

Poor service - we got stuck in a small back room and had to ask another waiter to get our waiter and other things we ordered more than once. Below average food - my salmon benedict plate was served cold, and our scoops of mass made home fries were also cold. My boyfriend's avocado omelet was burnt on the outside, and there was entirely too much avocado inside. A Sunday brunch place should know how to make an omelet. read more

I've been there twice now. I got the BBQ burger the second time, and I think I got it the first time too, but it was over a year between visits so I don't remember. I went with three other friends who all ordered different things. We decided to sit out on the screened in patio that they have. It is small and it gets hot out there very quickly, there were about six tables. We went in around 2-3pm so I don't know what the lunch hour is like. Service was okay, not the best I've had but the waitstaff and hostesses were very friendly and knowledgable. The best part of their menu is the burger section, they all look delicious and it took me quite a while to decide on the BBQ burger. I opted to sub french fries for the normal potato chips. I also got their iced tea, which was nothing to brag about, really bland. The french fries weren't very good either, like something you would buy out of the frozen section of your local grocery store (and not even the best of the choices available there). But the burger was incredbile! The BBQ sauce was sweet, maybe a honey BBQ sauce I don't remember, but it was much better than the more traditional tangy BBQ sauce. It also came with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes (which I opted out of), onion, and cheddar cheese which had melted and oozed over everything. The size of the burger is such that you have to cut it in half to eat, and even then it's a delicious struggle to eat it all. I managed to eat the whole thing there at the table. A friend with me got the Caesar burger which she said was good. Another friend got the fish tacos, which she said was good too. read more

So, it's not a LOTR theme park, but they do have fun posters, figurines, and T-Shirts. Ultimately, it's the FOOD you come for anyway, and it is DELICIOUS. There's lots of fun drinks to choose from too. They have a lot of vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options, so that's great. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the dessert, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. read more
