I'm a sucker for healthy food: their buffalo burger is great! The shredded carrots option will not leave you hungry. I ordered the burger w/o the bun, and the chef still put effort into making the plate attractive. Well done! The banana almond smoothie was delicious. You can definitely taste the bananas and enjoy the crunch of the almonds, too. Our waiter was friendly, but came to our table a bit too often. It seemed as though he was rushing us through the meal (he came to the table twice while one of us was still eating to ask if we wanted dessert)... but our glasses were never empty. read more

This place is fantastic. I have only been 3 times now, but I crave it all the time. My favorites are the shrimp cream cheese spring rolls, the guacamole salad and chip, and the hobbit wrap. OMG the Hobbit Wrap. It's a giant tortilla filled with greens, vegetables and I chose avocado and grilled chicken as my two extras. The service the 1st and 2nd time was great, and the third wasn't as good, but it was few a time when we went with nearly empty glasses. We sat outside and didn't get bit by mosquitos, like I've see other people saying. read more

This place was pretty good. I got the shire sandwich, which I was super glad I ordered as a slim because it was still HUGE! Seriously, way too much food for me for one sitting. Switched out the side for fruit and it was super fresh and even included kiwi, which is awesome. My husband had the black bean burger, which he liked, but it was SO HUGE! Like hanging off the bread huge. And he added avocado but I swear they put like two whole avocados on the thing. Not a negative, but since they charge over 2 bucks to add avo, I'm glad they put a lot. Also like their daily happy hour special on beer, which they have a fairly nice selection of. Their patio is super cute - we loved sitting out there. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the servers were all super nice. read more

Food was good, but service is lacking. They okayed our table's check to be separated, but ended up putting 2 meals on my credit card. Not a big deal. However when I called and spoke to the manager about it he asked me to speak with my table mates to see who ended up not getting charged. Although I don't expect to get a free meal, it doesn't seem right to make the customer do the leg work when their staff member made a mistake. I recommend bringing cash if you're eating with a large group. read more

Lord and the Rings and Hobbit lovers around the world - this is your place. I love anything with a theme and especially when this is a one of kind resturant in HOUSTON none the less. I took my family here as a suprise (after the Hobbit 2 release) I have never seen more excited adults in my life. We had a great expereince there. I underestimated the size of the food - HUGE portions (Hobbits can eat ;) read more

I used to go to the Hobbit Hole years ago when I lived in the area, and really liked it. I recently stopped in at the Hobbit Cafe, a descendant of the Hobbit Hole. I had a spinach/feta omelet, the omelet was large, with plenty of spinach and feta. On the downside, the eggs were overcooked. The price was inexpensive. The service was slow, but not terribly so. Considering the quality of the Hobbit Hole, my visit was somewhat of a letdown. If you are looking for decent food at a good price, this is an option. But it doesn't really stand out, and I am unlikely to return. read more

Tasty food and great ambience! The theme served very well, and it was clear that someone had had a lot of fun decorating. My friends found a model of a hobbit home which we placed our camera in to take an amazing picture! read more

Update: See snarky response from management. I usually love this place but yesterday we arrived at approximately 5:20pm and stayed for only about 15 minutes, at which point we got disgusted and left. I arrived with my 1 year old son and my mother at a time when the restaurant was not particularly busy. We were greeted by a hostess that did not have the most welcoming demeanour. We were seated and I requested a highchair. She seemed annoyed at where I requested to sit, but I wanted plenty of space if the baby acted up etc. and again it was not busy and there were many open tables in the multiple rooms of the cafe. After being seated and not helped or waited on for upwards of 15 minutes, the same unwelcoming hostess proceeded to seat a 7 top of young people RIGHT next to our table. It made no sense. I finally told my mother I was fed up with the service at that point and that we should just leave. I made a point to let the hostess know on our way out that not only had we not been waited on in all that time, but it was a bad idea to seat a huge party if young people next to our table with a baby. The manager apologised but I really think maybe they should point out some obvious things in their training that would prevent such an unpleasant experience. read more

Step back into the 1970s and enjoy this fun little place in the middle of Houston. Lots of avocado and carrots and yummy sandwiches. The inside is mildly claustrophobic and the ladies room needs a makeover (and has for over a decade, so don't hold your breath), but I am still always glad to go. read more

Went here for the first time and I loved the place! It's cute in the inside, my party and I sat outside and with the nights it was intimate for us. I ordered a burger and it was huge! The service was ok. Our drinks ever got too empty. The burger itself was really fresh the beef tasted great! Everything came out hot and not a long wait! Would definitely visit again and recommend! read more

This was my first time at Hobbit Cafe and I really enjoyed it. It definitely looks like a hobbit house inside and out. Don't expect a fancy meal here, but the food was good and fresh with large portions and reasonably priced. We had two entrees, an appetizer, and four beers at around $61+tip. Our server was attentive and let us try some beers before purchasing. I had the salmon burger with sweet potato fries, which was delicious and came with a dill mayo spread that was so good! Husband had the jerk chicken plate which was good and spicy. I definitely plan on coming back. read more

We came on a cold afternoon and the Hobbit Cafe provided a nice, warm environment. Corinne was a fantastic host and server, she came over and chatted with us and was full of enthusiasm in the way she described the food and the Hobbit movies. Her effervescent personality definitely enhanced our experience! She recommended the Vilindor, which is a HUGE plate of steamed vegetables, brown rice, and black beans. More than enough for my aunt and I to split and both of us be completely stuffed. The only drawback is that while the amount was amazing, the vegetables themselves were very bland. We wish they'd seasoned the vegetables (even salt!) or put them in a light sauce or curry or something. Corinne brought us BBQ sauce and Braggs and it really perked it up. The tofu were delicious nuggets of warm goodness on top. A simple, healthy meal. Great place! read more

This place has long been a favorite of mine, and my dad has come here for decades. I've come a number of times and will continue to dine here in the future. Unfortunately, their quality is inconsistent. Some days my experience is seamless and my meal is delicious and I walk away extremely happy. Other days, my ruffles chips will come out soggy, or my enchiladas feel luke warm, or my meal takes way too long to come out of the kitchen. Pros: extensive menu (vegetarian/vegan options), patio seating, fun decor Cons: inconsistent quality/experience I really do hope this place can get a revamp in its food quality and improve itself, because I'd hate to see it go, as it is such a treasure in this area. I noticed it no longer appears on the first search page of restaurants in my area on both Yelp and Google Maps. As I said, I'll continue to dine here, but I hope to voice my opinion and let them know, as a loyal customer, I want to see them do better. I felt compelled to write a review after eating here last night and ordering the black bean burger (which fell apart in my hands like sand, the patty was so dry). The waitress had notified me the black bean burger had run out earlier in the day but "luckily" they had made more. I would've been just as happy ordering something else, and I really wish I would've. read more

My wife and I went and had an amazing experience. I forgot to get the servers name; he was a tall, dark-haired gentleman. But he made our visit AWESOME! He recommended the Gandalf sandwich with a fried egg on it. It was absolutely to die for. Their beer selection is great and I was very pleased with the speed of service. We ordered shrimp rolls for an appetizer and they were immediately brought out still bubbling with grease from the fryer. We ordered our sandwich and fish tacos and they came out and my egg was still sizzling. The food was beyond delicious and while it's pretty pricey, I will DEFINITELY be back again. Everything about this place was great. read more

Have been eating here for years the food is good and always consistent. Atmosphere is fun and inviting a great local Cafe.

We came here on a Thursday night after seeing that the lot was full at the place we intended to go. But I'm glad this is where we stayed! Solid list of beers on tap, and our waiter made sure we got the right one for us. The food was not five stars, but certainly good! I'm a big fan of (well made) salads and this one was good - fresh ingredients, chicken cooked well, and good spice. Hubby got the boudin burger with an egg on top, which was cooked past the medium that he asked for, but still tasty. And the sweet potato fries were done well. Beyond the food, the atmosphere was great! We were on the patio under a big tree with lights wrapped around it, laid back, and our waiter was super chill (and helpful at the same time). We'd come back! read more

This place is cute. As a Tolkien fan I appreciate this place and its ethos. I've been to this place a few times over the years, and each experience with it continues to leave me saying "meh". The parking isn't great, but its on Richmond, which doesn't normally allots places to have a lot of parking. I appreciate a parking lot and that its not only valet or street parking. I normally do not wait very long with my party to be seated. But if the wait was longer than 20 minutes I would go somewhere else. The decor is very cute, although since its a little older it feels kind of musty. Also, the shower curtains in the bathroom...why has that not been changed? The food is cutely named, but not good quality. They claim everything is fresh, but I do not believe them based upon what I've received. I ordered the fruit salad and it looked as if it had come from a can or been in the refrigerator for way too long. My guest had a black bean burger and it was so dry, she couldn't eat it as a sandwich since it crumbled all over her plate. It was more black bean pellets than a burger. Another person in our party ordered the portobello mushroom fajitas and said they were bland and it looked sloppy. Do not expect great presentation or any garnishes with your food. The servers were barely polite, and there wasn't much warmth in them. Hobbits are supposed to be friendly and hospitable, right? It's nice because it's been in Houston since the 70s, and it is very quaint from the outside...but it needs new management or something else to liven it up, because I would not take anyone else to eat here. If I want sandwiches, salad, and fruit I know a lot of other restaurants to get it from. read more

Hobbit Cafe is definitely one of my old standbys. The food is consistently good, the service is usually good, and they certainly do have big servings. Usually on weeknights it's pretty empty and on nice evenings the patio can't be beat. Some favorites are the fish tacos (really good sauce!), all of the sandwiches are good (especially if you're an avocado fan), and the fries are to die for. We've only been for brunch a few times but the breakfast was not super memorable. One recent development is a bar over on the side of the patio which means they have a good selection of draught beers now. They also have some pretty good and reasonably priced wines. The inside ambiance is definitely lacking. You sit pretty close to other tables and the a/c struggles a bit in the Houston heat, but it definitely has charm. read more

Deb and I were driving through Houston on a Saturday night and googled it. I found it delightful. Simple menu with good portions. Good price. Food is on point, got the special lamb burger that gave a good large portion and sweet potato fries are pretty good too. Service was much faster than I've ever seen vs other places, got a beer within 2 minutes of me sitting down, ordered and got my food within like 10 minutes. Seems like a place hipsters would go, which a place named to hobbit cafe would bring but other than that I'd go here again, wide variety of food choices and price is alright. read more

Their Food makes the Hobbit or Elf in my case, coming back for more. Their food is awesome, the reason my group doesn't go back their after years of meeting there, is the service. I know they try, but too many incorrectly done meats and slow service decided for us to look for a different meeting place. Personally, I love their Salmon Burger and I get half brown rice and half black beans with my salmon burger. The burger is made to order and has baby lettuce and lemon dill dill dressing. They also have many fine vegetarian dishes. If you don't mind waiting a little and forgive little mistakes like over or under done burgers and meats, this would be a good place to go. Their prices are not outrageous and the foods are fresh and some of the salad mix is organic. read more

Overall this is a good find nestled away along Richmond ave, and if you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings, you'll definitely appreciate it even more. The interior is decorated ala LOR, with several Hobbit photos, statues, posters, with an introduction to the Hobbit personality and lifestyle on the menu, and waiters strolling around with Hobbit t-shirts (maybe themed dressing, soundtrack to LOR to really hype the mood?). The parking is a nightmare, a pot-hole infested, uneven pavement lot with potential for fender-benders a plenty (vs. fear of getting shot). Staff were nothing that stood out, our waitress was a bit overaggressive (which I supposed trumps inattentive); they also told us "sorry, we're out of bean patties," which is an inventory no-no for the vegetarian diner. Unfortunately there were also flies swarming around our food as well (I'd like to think an added effect to feel more like a Hobbit, though I don't recall JRR Tolkien mentioning the Hobbit's penchant for flying friends in his books). I ordered the bean-patty burger originally, not in stock (ha!), so settled for the Bilbo the Magnificent which: had no cheese, bread sorta crumbled apart, veggies fresh, and way, way, WAY too much guac (jesus I had to slice out half of it and that alone dominated half of my plate, and attracted flies!). Despite this culinary faux pas, the sandwich was a splendor to the taste buds, the fries well-fried, properly seasoned, and temperature-ed. Overall, excellent beer and smoothie selection as well. So overall, great idea, but could be better executed, food is nothing to jump up and shout hoorah for, nice, very laid-back atmosphere with outdoor seating (if you can find it and don't get fall into a massive pothole in the parking lot), and many veggie options, but again, this is nothing too "preecciousssss" (sorry, bad joke). I will go back however, perhaps dressed as a Hobbit to inspire the staff. read more

I'm from out of town and a friend and I, being huge LOTR fans, decided to stop here. There's just some random LOTR memorabilia and knick-knacks around. The menu has some Middle Earth references, but nothing inspired. Absolute kicker: I got *food poisoning* here. From the veggie enchiladas, of all things. I spent the rest of the evening taking Tums pills like shots and laying like death on my friend's couch, didn't fully recover until a couple days after. Steer clear. read more

I have been here twice in the past few months. Unfortunately, they have been two very different experiences. The first time I visited, I was so impressed by their decor, and the entire feel of the restaurant. I was sat outside on a table in their front patio under a large umbrella. The weather was perfect, the patio was lovely. I ordered the salmon burger, and it was delicious! This was overall a very good experience. However, I revisited a few months later, and my second visit was less than desirable. I was greeted by the hostess, and taken through the indoor section of the restaurant. My party was taken to the back of the restaurant where we were sat by two larger parties and a table of two. The small room was incredibly crowded and loud. After being greeted by our server, 15 minutes passed until we got our drink orders. After he took our food order, we waited nearly 45 minutes before everything arrived at our table. After It did, I took one bite of my enchiladas, and the amount of salt in those things was ridiculous! I would say it is definitely a hit or miss with this place. If I end up visiting again, I will keep this updated! read more

The only hobbit theme here is a few posters on the wall. Cramped seating, noisy wooden floors. Waited 15 minutes to get drink order, waiter came to table total of 3 times in a hour (order, bring food, check). Never received sauces for tasteless food. Chip and salsa was some stale chips and picante ($4). Frodo sandwich was FLAVORLESS. Will not come back. read more

Would you like a side of Zika with your Smaug's delight? Look, the food here is decent, even above average, but this (indoor) restaurant - place where you pay other people to prepare food for you - is infested with mosquitoes. I went with a colleague to interview a potential employee and we had to switch tables because the blood sucking vermin were really bad in the particular area where we were seated. Keep in mind, this is most definitely an indoor area. What, you ask, did our server do about this inconvenience? Well, we switched tables on our own, and informed our server of reason for moving. I think she may have raised her eyebrows a little bit, but had no response. Crickets. Sorry for the negative review...this is not my MO. But, if you have an obvious pest infestation that your customers comment on and you won't even apologize for it, much less do anything about it, I'm giving you 1 star on yelp. PS If the area for paying customers is this disgusting, what does the kitchen look like? The thought makes me shudder. read more

What a cool place! The whole family enjoyed it. I had the Chilaquiles, my husband had the Poached Salmon Benedict, one kid had peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes, the other had an omelet. This restaurant seemed more like a watering hole than a restaurant. The patio really didn't offer much shade so the sun was beating down on us most of the time. The place has a nice LOTR feel to it and there burgers are huge! Will definitely come here again.

Dining with the hobbits! The establishment is kinda like a theatrical scenery. Very friendly staff.

Had a craving for a good black bean burger so I decided to give this place a try. I ordered it with a fried egg and avocado. The burger is huge but doesn't stay together very well and is a bit dry. I wouldn't order it again. The ambiance is pretty nice. It's like an older home with each room converted into separate dining areas. The hibiscus tea is also pretty good. Beautiful presentation, I ordered the mahi mahi burger and although the portion was big, it was tasteless. Very disappointed):

Beer selection is great. Amazing burger options. We had the nachos which were ok, but I love how the bar is tucked away.

By far one of the best cheese burgers with sweet potato fries I've had in a while! I'll be back!

I've only been twice, but as far as eats go I think I'll high tail it somewhere else. Ok ok let's start with the GOOD things, the black bean nachos and vegetarian friendly cuisines are quite delicious. Driving into the lot I felt like I was on a motor cross track (it needs serious fixing, it's damned near impossible to park and if more than one person is trying to get in and out then forget it. You cannot tell the difference of the wait staff to the customers other than an apron, I have no problems with a casual staff just please atleast wear a black shirt and jeans or SOMETHING so I don't have to play a guessing game on who is a customer and who is my waiter/waitress. It's unprofessional. The place itself? The tables and chairs are wobbly and not to mention UNCLEAN (bussing my own table is not what I like to do when it's not even my restraunt/ I'm not working). Having food I can physically scrape off with my finger is more than just unsettling, It's plain unhygenic. My waitress was not fermiliar with what kinds of teas were available but the herbal one I got was good. The staff was friendly and perky but forgetful and seldom visisted the table to see how we were doing. I ordered a bilbo (I believe so, whichever one has the guacamole) and my sandwhich had been raped with two solid inches of guac, plus it wasn't overly tasty to begin with (perhaps the guac was a mask?) This restraunt is nothing special. read more

We have eaten here several times over the years, it's good fresh food with nice size portions in a charming cafe environment. If you are expecting little people singing and dancing on the table tops - it's not really like that, but it does get pretty loud because the dining rooms are hobbit small. The food is not great, it's just really good (usually), we particularly like the salads here which are fresh and made with love. Wait staff is usually pretty friendly and provide good service, although there is one guy who is too cool for school and doesn't write down your order. Last time we had him he had to come back and 'double check' our order ten minutes after we ordered, and we watched him totally fubar the table next to us who had lots of substitutions apparently. Overall Hobbit Cafe is a nice place for a decent meal made fresh. We were disappointed there were no dancing hobbits however. read more
