OK, first off, this place has been open since 1972 so they must be doing something right. It's a groovy little pub-style restaurant, in the groovy part of Houston, with a groovy assortment of beverages, including Mead wine, and food named for characters and places from the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings (though very little of what they offer seem like something you would actually find in Middle-earth.) There's kitschy memorabilia from the movies and books, and the front door looks like a Hobbit Hole! It has indoor and outdoor seating and it's just a lot of fun to go to. The staff is friendly and a lot of of them dress up like elves and hobbits, though don't go looking for anybody being well-versed in Tolkien lore. My one criticism, for which I'm not removing any stars, is when I got there, they handed me five menus! I got a drinks menu, a food menu, a food specials menu, a drink specials menu, and a Mead-specific menu. They have over 120 items on all of their menus! I would say this would be a problem in running a business but look at the first sentence of my first paragraph above. It's been open for over 50 years! read more

Everything was so good !! The burgers are huge and my husband calls them 2 hands burgers. Fresh handmade patties, Full of flavor and so many choices to pick from. The service we had was good. Manny was our server and he did a good job. Some of the staff dress up to fit the theme of the Hobbit. There were a few kids but not many. The restaurant is close quarters inside which of course comes a higher noise level, but it was a fun time. They have inside and outside seating. My family has been coming here since I was a small child. Today I met my cousin to celebrate her birthday. This is a charming, welcoming cafe. The menu has a little something for each of us. We started with the fellowship platter, which is a little bit of everything and absolutely perfect for sharing. I personally ordered the Aragon's avocado burger with Gouda and it was definitely enough to split so more than half of It is going home to be enjoyed later. I subbed out my fries for shredded carrots. My cousin ordered the Gandalf, a personal fav of hers. The staff was super friendly, the entire vibe is lowkey, relaxed, and welcoming. I know absolutely nothing about Lord of The Rings or The Hobbit, but came for a catch-up lunch with the lab! Their menu is pretty extensive so I decided to just get a fruit salad since I've been craving fruits,,,, super delicious!! It consisted of cut up kiwis, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, and bananas- all combined in greek yogurt with chopped almonds and coconuts shavings. I used to come here about 20 years ago with my sister. I can't believe it's been that long. Not sure why it took me so long to come back, but I sure am glad that I did. Food: all of the food was simply amazing! The burger was top-notch, made fresh and made the perfection. The real winner here is the wings. Unbelievable. They should be known for their wings. These wings are so good. They don't even need any type of sauce. These are some of the best fried chicken wings I've ever taste. The seasoning they put on these wings along with the crispy crunch my god this is a very special wing. If you like wings, you must come back here to try their wings. I'm telling you right now. This is one of the best wings I've had ever. All of the appetizers were amazing. We got some stuffed jalapeño poppers, which were simply. Along with some shrimp eggrolls. Everything on the menu was good. The service was great. Our waitress was very nice and very helpful. She's the one that recommended the wings. The outdoor seating is absolutely amazing . We visited this cute little spot when we were in Houston visiting friends. It is a must for Tolkien fans. The menu items are all cleverly named for characters from the series. We waited half an hour for a table during a holiday Monday at lunchtime. The service was friendly. Went back today! first my review is 100% on the service and staff. Food as always was great I want to give a 10/10 to the bartender they were excellent while we waited to be sitted. Everything was fine till we order dessert. We got the mouse chocolate cake. it had no indication it had any type of nut on the menu unlike their other dessert, that clearly label pecan, walnut etc. We were half way to the cake when we notices it has decorated with some type of nut on the outside, it was hard to see at first glance due to the color blending with the black chocolate, we ask two waiters if the inside also had nuts, the first one never came back, and the second one only asked if i had an allergie'' which I replied yes, and he just said ''oh well i wouldn't touch it'' and shrug it off. No apology, compensation or anything, less the could have done was not charge us for the dessert. We paid and told him he probably should add the nut warning on the menu. The patio was cute , had us excited and confirming our choice to try for the evening. No one inside at all, but some on the patio. We had queso, the Caesar burger and the Grouper burger. Onion rings & fries aren't homemade, mediocre at best. Sad simply because we asked if they were handmade in house and were told they were. Caesar burger was kind of just meh, nothing special. Grouper burger the same. The music was really throwing us off on the atmosphere and vibes because it was a mix of new songs playing. Felt like they would play more into the hobbit theme but was left with the feeling of missing something. Our waitress was okay but overall also not helpful. Ordered drinks, brought out waters. Received our apps, asked for drinks again & didn't get them until thirty minutes in when we got our entrees. Non alcoholic, soda fountain drink....but not an issue. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. I entered for the novelty, and left with the satisfaction of a phenomenal dining experience. At its core, the Hobbit Cafe is a sandwich shop- they offer little fare outside of sandwiches and hamburgers- but I am nonetheless impressed with the menu that features incredibly creative blends of flavor from dishes from all over the world. Much of the menu is vegan and vegetarian friendly, offering options for people with dietary restrictions. The restaurant also features an extensive variety of meats unlike that of which I have ever seen. There is a lot of care and consideration to feel historical as well as dynamic and versatile. Speaking of historical, the restaurant has been open for over half a century (since before any films were released) and the aged wooden patio flooring of the establishment strikes against the surrounding concrete jungle. It's a piece of Houston's history, and a must-try even if you are not a fan of the franchise. read more

I had been wanting to come here for years and it's possible that I actually had been here before, but then again, the 90's was a crazy time so who remembers what they did back then? I do remember that for as long as I've been in Houston, they have been around and apparently they were Houston's original vegetarian cafe much longer than that and over the years brought in a much more eclectic menu that covers everything burgers to burritos to seafood to salads. They have a very nice parking lot which is rare these days, the place is also very charming with plenty of outside seating along with intimate indoor seating. The staff were also nice and friendly (although it would have been nice to get offered soft drink refills) and overall, this is was a good enough experience so I really wish I could give them 5 starts but my particular dish was not that good. I was kind of on the fence about what to get and originally wanted to get a burger since the last time I had a burger was at a yelp elite event but then while reading yelp reviews, I came across a photo of the Rivendale Salmon that Megan E had posted and thought it looked both tasty and healthy with the veggies so I called and audible and ordered that. Our server said that it would come with mango Pico De Gallo and toasted coconuts and if that was ok and seeing how I'm watching my sugar intake, I said to ask them to go easy on that but what I wasn't counting on is that the entire thing with every other item would be drenched in the Jerk Sauce which is essentially just brown sugar and it completely took away from the salmon and the other sides. I still ate around the sauce the best I could but they really needed to use 1/3 of the sauce on there or at least ask the people whether they want grilled salmon or salmon floating around in Jerk Sauce. I guess next time I'll be sure and tell them to just forget the jerk sauce all together and just grill the salmon like normal without all the diabetes. I ate here way back in the 70's when it was strictly vegan and it was great, and i've never been vegan. Now they cater to everyone. Even better! My wife and I decided to try the beef and chicken fajitas with lots of grilled bell peppers and onions and a side plate of rice, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, pico de gallo and black beans. I picked flour tortillas to go with these goodies. We were amazed at how good this was and plentiful. I had to get an a la carte shredded chicken enchilada with mole sauce...this was another 5 star menu item. We shared a glass of Eureka Heights Buckle Bunny beer...yum! Came here for a friend that is a big LOTR fan - he seemed to enjoy the space! He was mainly appreciating this display case of a bunch of LOTR figures and trinkets when you walk in the front. This place was hopping on a Sunday afternoon even though it was close to 2pm. Even so, we were seated in about 10 minutes and service felt timely. The menu is a lot to take in - I found myself needing to read everything because so many items are proper nouns/character names that have no obvious correlation to the food item. We ended up going with the classic Dwalin and the Balrog Burger. Also not pictured are the shrimp rolls. The shrimp rolls reminded me of a crab rangoon, but shrimp. We thought it was a little odd that there's just a pile of raw, shredded carrots that comes with the rolls. The Dwalin is supposedly an award winner, according to the menu, so we had to try it. I personally think the concept is not quite my taste, but my friend enjoyed it. We also got the Balrog Burger which is an impressive sight to see! I enjoyed that one much more, though, I had to deconstruct it to eat it because it was so massive. I think overall the food is decent, and the portions are massive. I think food is 3/5, value is 4/5, and I'll just round up on the stars for the theme and uniqueness of this place. Definitely open to coming back and sharing the Morgoth Burger with a couple friends! If you love an old school Hobbit themed menu and staff that have pointed ears and are very friendly then this is your vibe! They were very nice and did their best to absolutely help all of the diners on a Saturday evening to be seated and served as quickly as possible. While we were there for a little longer than we normally would be, that just gave us more time to take in the scenery, and chit chat amongst ourselves. I did not regret coming in today for brunch time. 51 years serving food back up this restaurant, decorated for the fans and lovers of the hobbit/ Lord of The Rings. Love the decoration, and the ambience. I got there around 11am and it wasn't full, sat inside next to a cute little windows, I ordered the DWALIN sandwich (curry chicken breast with grapes amd almonds) there's something about the sweet and savory mixed that gave me thanksgiving sandwich memories it was absolutely amazing and must I say HUGE portion; it comes with a side so I got the Uruk Fries (chorizo queso and jalapeños) MAN those Uruk Hai know about food ;D Service was quick and staff helpful and kind, by the time I was leaving the place started packing up around lunchtime (12-1pm). The menu is so diverse and they have multiple vegetarian options that even if you're not you'll fell tempted to try. "I'm going on an adventure..." and that I did at the Hobbit Cafe! This quaint little house turned restaurant is a cool place decked out in vintage furnishings and movie memorabilia from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Nothing fancy about this place, it's all about the experience, the entrees and appetizers with names from The Hobbit and LOTR, and the Mead, of which I specifically came for. The other cool thing about this place was the music that pumped through the speakers featuring classic funk and soul tunes, and you can't go wrong with that, though a tad loud at times it did make it a little hard to hear others (at my table) speaking, but it was no big deal. We started with a combo platter that had everything from fried pickles, jalapeño poppers, egg rolls, chicken wings, and quesadillas. I loved the fried pickles and quesadillas, while the chicken wings though a nice size and crunchy on the outside were a bit salty on the inside. I ordered the Bombur's Bacon Cheeseburger - beware readers, the beef patties are thick! Even after cutting the burger in half I couldn't finish it all in one sitting. The side I chose for the burger was the queso fries - I was a bit disappointed with these, although the fries were tasty the queso was more like a watered down cheese sauce, and the fries were served in a bowl. Thankfully, the Mead that I came for did not disappoint! I chose the 3-Mead flight consisting of the Moonlight Blossom, Valkyrie Kiss Cherry, and the Gryphon Scarlett...my favorite was the Valkyrie Kiss Cherry, it was the perfect amount of tart, needless to say, all three Meads were delightful on the pallet. Our waitstaff- a young lady who was new on the job, did well and brought our out food promptly, even though she disappeared for a second it was good that another staff gladly jumped in (when I needed extra mayo). Keep in mind that the place is small and next door to other food establishments so parking can be tight around there likely moreso during the weekends. I would go back if only for the fried pickles, quesadillas, the Mead and the music. All in all it was a nice time. We had such a great time at The Hobbit Cafe it has such a fun, eclectic atmosphere and is definitely family-friendly. The food was delicious! I had the Tolkien Bowl with avocado and grilled tuna so fresh and flavorful. My partner had the Balrog Burger, and wow, it was massive! The meat was juicy, perfectly cooked, and packed with flavor. The girls ordered a cheeseburger and fries and some Dino nuggets. My 8-year-old wasn't a big fan of the nuggets, but she loved the fries super crispy and nicely seasoned! My experience here was mixed, but the Lord of the Rings decor and huge mead collection makes this a fun place to bring out-of-town friends. There's a realistic Gollum statue, a photo-op, and other fun decorations immediately upon entering the cafe, but we didn't get a chance to enjoy the ambiance during our meal. Even though we were seated "inside," we ended up in a small room that looks like it used to be a patio, just off the main dining room. It felt cramped and sticky in there with barely any LotR decor, so eating out there felt somewhat disappointing. The food also isn't the prettiest sight, but my cousins really enjoyed the soup and ended up ordering seconds. I loved their huge mead collection and we enjoyed making our own flight. My personal favorite was a mead that tasted just like peanut butter and jelly! Our poor waitress was the only server on the floor for a full house of customers, but she still did a great job and was prompt with everything. Don't come at me hobbit fans, but I was pretty disappointed! Maybe if circumstances were different, we would have had better experience. We came in with a party of 8 for a Saturday lunch. We waited about 20 minutes to get seated in a little back room with no other tables. At first we thought that was great! that was until we realized that we were easily forgotten back there. It took a while to get our waters and for the waitress to take our appetizers orders. In hindsight we should have ordered our main courses at that same time. The appetizers were ok, the chips and quest were good, the quest was hot when we got it. The Jalapeño poppers were hot too! Those were actually pretty good too. I ordered the egg salad sandwich and it was kinda dry. It came with more guacamole than egg salad which was super odd. I got my sandwich last which was weird too since mine didn't actually involve any real cooking, it was a cold sandwich. My friend's cheeseburger was so cold that the cheese had actually already gotten like congealed on it, and the lettuce and tomatoes were soggy from sitting under the meat patty. On top of all of this they did legit forget about us back in that room. I know there were 8 of us, but this meal should not have taken over 2 hours like it did. read more
