This was my first experience with Ethiopian cuisine and I really enjoyed it. I ended up going on a Sunday so we ended up getting the Sunday Special. I also got the honey wine as well. We really enjoyed everything we ate and left super happy with this new experience. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous and feels super intimate and the service we received was perfect. Just a note, injera bread is slightly sour, more sour than a sourdough, so keep that in mind when you try it. Enjoy!

If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would! Blue Nile was recommended to me by an acquaintance while on vacation in Georgia at a Ethiopian restaurant there. They raved about Blue Nile and couldn't believe I had not been since living in Houston. I definitely regret not coming sooner. This week alone I've been to them twice. Once during lunch and again for dinner to go. Service both times were A+. The ambiance is so cozy and relaxing. The food was delicious! I've had #19 Blue Nile Special Tibs with a side of lentils 5/5 #12 Vegetarian Combination 5/5 # 17 Yebeg Tibs 5/5 Everything was delicious! Even the side salad that comes with each meal. Ingredients are fresh and seasoned well. Their injera is my favorite! I can't wait to go back and try more!

So yummy! Mar was super friendly, and the restaurant has a very rich/warm vibe. Will definitely be back!

Super late post, but I went here for the first time a year ago because of so many recommendations from friends.. SO GOOD. First time ever having Ethiopian food so I wasn't sure what to expect, but when they brought out this huge platter to share I was throughly satisfied. I enjoyed both the beef and lamb along with the potatoes. Flavor is perfect and so good. Staff was and service was great. I loved the vibe of it inside as well. Felt very intimate and took me away from Houston for a moment. Will definitely be back and highly recommend!

We came in an hour and a half earlier than our reservation and was greeted by Mare who was so sweet and very accommodating. She had a corner table that had to be cleaned off and she did it herself! She continually checked on us even when we were waited in by another. Actually all the servers checked on guests throughout the restaurant! It was a busy Valentine's Day night and the staff were all very good. Food was delicious! Will definitely be back!

    Fantastic Doro Wot !!!

I hadn't been to this place since 2019 when they were at their original location near Gessner. This was my first time at this new spot. I always go for the Doro Wot or Lamb Tibs when eating Ethiopian food. I ordered the Doro Wot Meal last night and it was very unique, very delicious, buttery, bitter, spicy and rich in dark color. It was a mix of oily and thick like cream at the same time. The chicken drumstick was very good, flavorful and tender in every bite. However, I do wish they would put 2-3 pieces of those though. I am not a fan of hard-boiled eggs, but covered in that gravy, it was doable for sure. They used to put a salad at the original place, but now put two kinds of lentils. The brown type was savory like chili, but not as spicy as chili. The yellow was very much like a mix of sour peas or very earthy beans in profile taste. I preferred the brown one more. The injera was very spongy, sour, moist and oddly addictive. It pairs great with the heavier sauces too. I love that Tej (Honey Wine), but didn't get it this time. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient.

Blue Nile has modest exterior and a fairly spacious well decorated interior. I can't speak to the authenticity of the food but I know what I like. The food is very good but perhaps not the best I've had in the Metro area. The two of us shared vegetarian and meat combos and had a very generous amount of food. The beef cubes had a perfect amount of spicy goodness as did the lentils. However, the green beans and cabbage were a little lacking in flavor. The restaurant was fairly empty so our server gave us lots of attention and great service. If back in the area and looking for Ethiopian food, I wouldn't hesitate to return.

I've visited Blue Nile three times in the last five years, and it always is a pleasure! Such good value too. The two of us were so full with the vegetarian combination which came with another basket of injera. The service was great and the interior is beautifully decorated with what I think are Ethiopian decors. I'm so glad that this place survived Covid!

When I'm craving something different and Ethiopian in particular, Blue Nile is my go-to! The food is soooo delicious and the service is fast and friendly offering an authentic dining experience. I love it! The Blue Nile special kitfo (medium well) is my go to, and the hubs loves the doro wot. The meat and veggie sambusas are yummy (I'm partial to the meat). You simply cannot go wrong. The spices, the flavors, the injera, the portions-- all perfection. I'm a fan, and I've never been more thrilled to eat with my hands!

We decided to venture out and give Ethiopian cuisine a try for dinner. Located in Upper Kirby area, Blue Nile has a small private lot and plenty of street parking around. The exterior and interior were full of ethnic elements. Our servers were very attentive and friendly. Not knowing much about the cuisine and overwhelmed by the menu, we decided to try the Family Size which offered samples of the traditional chicken, beef and lamb dishes and feeds about 4-6 people for $150. The dishes came with Injera which is a sour and spongy flatbread. The meats had a lot of flavors and spices which balanced well with the natural sweetness of the cabbage and collard green. The lean beef was a little dry and chewy, but the chicken and lambs were tender. My favorite was the Doro Wot which reminds me of curry. While revising the menu after the meal, we did notice the fillet fish and mixed veggies listed on the family size menu were not served. Overall we enjoyed the flavors and were glad that we tried something different. I would recommend trying out this place if you never had Ethiopian food before!

Had the Ethiopian traditional family size platter with my wife and a friend. Pretty empty at the restaurant on a Tuesday night, maybe three other tables while we were there. Place smelled fantastic, as I think they were roasting some coffee. All of the offerings on our platter were delicious. I believe my wife and friend enjoyed their wine also. Leftovers enough for two for lunch. The platter serves 4 to 5 people and there were only three of us. A pistachio cake for dessert was also very tasty. According to the menu this is what was on the platter: Doro wot, Blue Nile Special Tibs, Yebeg Tibs, Yessiga Wot, Yebeg Fitfit, Zilzil Tibs, Bozena Shiro, Fillet fish, Gomen, Ayb, Salad, Atkilt Wot. Yum! Although the service was not bad, I did not find either of the servers to be particularly engaging or motivated to add to the dining experience. I thought the price was reasonable for the amount of food and the quality/taste of the food.

    #40 platter

I read other Yelp reviews to know what to order and the people did not disappoint! Two of us ordered the #40 combination platter to share several dishes and added the lamb tibs based on reviews. I love the variety, but the tender beef cubes (yessiga wot I believe) was the standout dish to me. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We made a reservation for a Friday evening but that seemed unnecessary based on several open tables. Still doesn't hurt to call ahead, and other times might be busier. This is great for a quiet date night or small gathering.

Extremely easy to find and a parking lot nearby (although, it is a relatively small parking lot) I checked this place out on a Sunday evening and it was super quick and easy to find a table. After reading all the reviews, I asked to try their Honey Wine or Tej. It is not on the menu, so in order to get it, you have to ask for it. The honey wine was really good- not too sweet or bitter. Once that was finished, I ordered Lamb Tibs. I had greens and lentils on the side. The tibs were so good alongside the jira, but the sides left something to be desired. I wished they were a touch more flavorful and there was a larger size (greens came in a bowl, but the lentils came in a ramekin and was the size for two people which felt a little odd) Overall great experience!

However, the food is AMAZING!) There's kitschy memorabilia from the movies and books, and the front door looks like a Hobbit Hole! It has indoor and outdoor seating and it's just a lot of fun to go to. The staff is friendly and a lot of of them dress up like elves and hobbits, though don't go looking for anybody being well-versed in Tolkien lore. My one criticism, for which I'm not removing any stars, is when I got there, they handed me five menus! I got a drinks menu, a food menu, a food specials menu, a drink specials menu, and a Mead-specific menu. They have over 120 items on all of their menus! It's been about a decade since my last review of Govinda's shortly after they first opened so it's…read morehigh time that I finally update that review after being a repeat customer over that time. Lots of things changed but Govinda's largely stayed the same. The decor hasn't changed but there is some wear and tear on the walls. Still clean, food still reliably good and has the homemade taste. They change up the menu daily and now they have 3 all vegan menu days to the week: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Plus, weekdays have a themed specials that aren't necessarily Indian. They post their menus online but weekday menus are posted the day of on their menu Instagram "ghmenu". Weekend menus are typically posted on Thursday. They are still a buffet so service is minimal but it is pretty good but no frills. Unfortunately, they got rid of their salted lassi years ago so they only have mango lassi now along with mint lemonade for cold drinks. Price has gone up as well to around $18 (a little more for holidays and weekends) per person but that's to be expected. Carry out is $16.95 per meal (large take out container plus a soup, roti, salad, papadam, and dessert). You can opt of out of items but you'll still pay the same price. In the past decade, I still love their food but I can no longer eat as much to make it worth it to dine in so we've been getting take out (we took a brief break from buffets but I missed them so we went the take out route). One take out meal lasts me 2 meals at home so it's a no brainer (husband finishes the take out container in one sitting though). Plus, I have kids now and they definitely aren't good eaters so it didn't make sense for them to eat in. Over the last few months in Houston, we typically go once every 2-3 weeks because my picky kids absolutely love their saag paneer. I got them al a carte saag paneer ($10 for a half container, $5 for a half container of rice, $7 for a small container of an entree) until someone there suggested I just order an entree because it's the same price but you get more. And their plastic containers are limited. I started doing it but then one day, the main guy (manager?) wasn't happy since the big container was just rice, saag paneer, and maybe a little bit of dal makhani. I was a little miffed because if we ate in and all they ate was saag paneer, it would be okay. That aside, I noticed someone mentioned food allergies. The reason why I order Al a carte and segregate their take out container is because my youngest is allergic to wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, avocado, pineapple, and kiwi. Their food is usually labeled but I like asking to be sure. On days they serve something that contains nuts, we just don't go (unless it's only in the dessert). My kids usually like the same things and we only go on non-vegan days. The general consensus is vegan days' food tends to be spicier. My youngest is okay with spice, but my eldest who is super picky won't eat it if it's too spicy. Plus, I love their makai kofta. If I'm in town and I see they have makai kofta, we are THERE. However, I noticed that their menu isn't always set in stone. One day, they didn't have my favorites but we went because I didn't want to cook and THEY HAD MALAI KOFTA. I was so pleased. If you love potatoes, their batada vada is divine (but moderately spicy). I also enjoy the BBQ tofu but they usually only offer it on vegan days so I haven't had it in a long while. They have special menus on holidays but they're vegan so I have unfortunately never tried any holiday menus. We moved but when I'm in town, we make sure to drive up north to eat here at least once. We absolutely miss Govinda's and my kids ask for their beloved saag paneer even when we're not in Houston. I should ask if they can part with the recipe! Haha.... We ordered catering in 2024 for my eldest's birthday! Even the non-vegetarians enjoyed it and you get a lot of food for less than $500. You choose from certain dishes but it still covered many of my Govinda favorites, if not all. Honestly, we'd do it again just for fun with close friends and family and have leftovers for at least a week after splitting it up with everyone. Price has probably increased though.

The grounds of the temple is well manicured and neat with flowers. A big red sign read, "Govinda" was positioned so that I wouldn't miss it. As soon as I walked in at lunch time, the restaurant was damn near empty with only two families. The host immediately sat me at a table front of the buffet line. There was a strong lingering smell of pine-sol and Mr. Clean in the air. Of course, that indication told me that the restaurant was clean. The items on the buffet line was plenty, but limited. I got the rice, tofu curry, chaat marsala, and some vegetables. Everything except for the chaat was bland. It wasn't very easy to eat while the smell of cleaning supplies was in the air. It reminded me of sitting in a bucket of cleaning chemicals while eating a meal. The tofu curry tasted only like turmeric, but no salt or pepper or anything. The rice was super bland. The chaat marsala was very tasty and well seasoned. I finished off with desserts which both options were tasty. I hope to return to try their holiday menu, but I think today was a bad day for the cooks.

They've managed to distinguish themselves as an outstanding dining option in the Gulfton area, and somehow maintains cultural authenticity with its unique integration of a restaurant and mini-mart all under one roof. While they've only been open a handful of years, they've managed to become Houston's highest rated Ethiopian spot. They've managed to do so with a combination of adapting to the area, making the cuisine approachable to novices, providing excellent service, and above all, keeping the food fresh and tasty. The interior does a good job of showcasing their roots, through traditional attire in display and cultural pieces throughout the dining area. There is indoor and outdoor seating, which includes a large private room for group fun. The mart itself is expectedly small, but functional with a limited number of imported goods for purchase. There are also TVs playing international games while locals come in and chow down, communal style. I ordered the #2 combination from their "all time favorite" section, which includes chikina tibs, doro, and two vegetarian dishes (whole lentil stew, and dinich wot potato stew). I was warned by the server that the portions would be overwhelming, but I was not the least bit intimidated. Then the platter arrived and indeed, the portions were stacked. This meal would have been doable for 3 people, but I still managed to take out a majority of it after many furious scoops from their incredibly fluffy injera, which was tangy and full balanced with nice elasticity. The spices were strong, but the flavor was addicting. Overall, everything was exceptionally prepared and despite being incredibly full, I still managed to continually shovel most everything into my mouth. Service was busy, but was kind and considerate. I'm already planning a return visit, but with hungry reinforcements to help me conquer a much larger platter. From top to bottom, this is my kind of establishment and one that I am looking forward to eating at over and over again. __________ (#1) Just trying to be like you, D.C.

When we walked in it wasn't too busy, but business did pick up throughout our visit. Service was quick, which was very nice. Our food came out pretty quick. We started with Sambusas, both meat and veggie. They were hot and delicious! Well seasoned, and we'll stuffed. The veggie actual had more of spice to it, which I enjoyed. Awaze Tibs were very tasty. I really enjoyed the 12 veggie combo, it serves plenty when grazing in groups. We also had beers, and a round of something more traditional that I do not remember the name of. It was like a mix of beer and wine, no carbonation. We had a group of 8 and split up all the things. Very easy. Would definitely go back.
