I found piece of a metal sponge in my noodle soup, how does it even get into the pho? There are also cockroaches on the floor and the tables. The vegetables in the spring rolls are always old and almost rotten to the point where they are brown. I went there almost every week. Seeing the vegetables at first didn't disturb me until I saw the cockroaches, since they have a really good soup base I still went there knowing that it's unsanitary there. The other day I went there and I was stunned that there was part of a metal sponge. I thought how unsanitary it was but how does a metal sponge even get in there? It can't be an accident because if they clean the pot well it would be clean and they probably don't clean food with it right? Anyways, until they make things cleaner, I'm not going back. When I came here with my friend, she was so surprised I haven't tried this place. I was too! I mean, it is a little sketch when you walk in, but that's when you know it is delicious! They are known for their bun bo hue but I was feeling like mi quang soup that day. It was so good and tasted so authentic. They added all the ingredients that make up the mi quang soup. The meat was soft/flavorful and not dry at all. I can see why many Vietnamese people flock this place to get their noodle fix. Next time, I would try the bun bo hue soup! They even add pork blood cubes to it, that's when you know it is legit. Our server was really cheery and our food came out fast! I shall return. read more

BBH!! Bún Bò Hue is so near and dear to my heart that we're on a TLA (three-letter-acronym) basis...much like CFS (chicken fried steak...*drool*). I know it says I only have a few check-ins here, but it's because I have a stupid phone. My family has been here well over 30 times in the past few years. Proof that this place is freakin' delicious: my husband left me in the hospital with our freshly newborn baby to eat here for lunch with my family. It's THAT good! Their BBH comes with four protein components: cha (ground pork "sausage"), thit (sliced beef), gio (pork hock/bone), and huyet (coagulated pig's blood). So, yeah, I usually order BBH with thit & cha only. The Mì Quang is also pretty dynamite. If you go there at the end of the day, though, you might get the bottom of the pot and that sh!t is spiiiiiicy! And, like other reviewers have said: Cash only. Park at the PLT (King's Plaza) parking lot or take the light rail to the Othello station. Vietnamese TV is not as obnoxiously in yo' face like at Pho My Chau. Oh, and take note of the super early closing time (it's in The Valley...yunno what I mean? You see the steel bars on the windows?) Owner is the shady-looking guy who obviously has no dental coverage and his girlfriend who's in her 50's and wears stuff from Forever 21. In the back corner of a Safeway parking lot, you will see a sign that says Bun Bo Hue, THEN the name of the restaurant, Hoang Lan. This alone speaks volumes about what's really important: Bun Bo Hue. Below that sign, you'll see quite possibly one of the sketchiest back entrances to a restaurant that you've ever seen. Don't be afraid. Take your most guarded stance, walk in past the two bathrooms, kitchen, and you'll see that it's actually not so bad. Keep in mind that this establishment accepts cash only. So, come prepared. They'll give you menus, but I'm here to tell you that for your first time you most definitely should try these two things: Banh Bot Loc & Bun Bo Hue. I'd like to point out here that in the couple times I've been, the wait staff speak English rather fluently, so there's nothing to worry about, short of trying to sound out what you're ordering. You could just point, but what's the fun in that? Just say that you want the "Bun Boc Lock" and "Boon B-awe Way." You might still sound a little funny, but hey, at least you'll be close! Banh Bot Loc could best be described as a pork and shrimp dumpling with a slightly sticky, slimy texture. The dumplings are accompanied with a fantastically made fish sauce for dipping. I realize it doesn't sound all that tempting, the way that I described it, but it really is. I highly recommend that you add some chili sauce to spice things up a bit. After you dip the miniature dumpling into the sauce and pop it into your mouth, you'll taste the sweetness of the fish sauce, followed by the textured crunch of the miniature shrimp and pork. It's highly addicting, and you'll feel as though you could eat an entire mountain of this delightful dumpling. In fact, you probably could. The Bun Bo Hue here can best be described as a beef broth based soup with the addition of vermicelli noodles, well done brisket, what I assume to be a pork meatball, pork blood cubes, and of course, a pig's foot. On the side, they'll provide you a plate of shredded banana flower (It's a must add, as it's great for texture), bean sprouts, lettuce, cilantro, lime wedges, and jalapeno slices. Once again, I haven't given you the most eloquent description of what's in the bowl that'll be in front of the future you, but that's coming, I promise. If I could eat and swim in a pool of this broth, blood cubes, pigs feet, and assorted meats, I most certainly would. It has a certain depth that completely balances a blend of spicy, salty, sour, and a hint of sweet flavors. Combine this with the different textures of the accoutrements and you have a bowl of the best thing since pho. As hard as it is to find a good pho, it is that much more difficult to find a good bowl of Bun Bo Hue. Its heartiness sets it apart from the lighter broth that accompanies pho, and it's something to be truly appreciated. I can't necessarily say that it's the best bowl in the greater Seattle area, as I have not tried this particular dish in very many spots. However, it is one of the best that I've personally had. Best place for Bun Bo Hue in the Seattle area. I often compare them with Dong Thap and the only thing Dong Thap has is their fresh noodle. Other than that, Dong Thap is a long way from Hoang Lan :). But if you're viet and/or a fan of Bun Bo Hue, then you got to be in the know that this is THE place for BBH, if ya don't know, now ya know! It's a very small shop, that can hold maybe 25 people at best. Parking could be a hassle as well as there are small lots around but always busy. But if you can make the trek and find a spot, the broth is clean tasting bursting with flavor. The pork blood is fresh and not chalky tasting, the meats are tender and melt in your mouth, the ham hock is a little small but just enough to nibble on afterwards. No MSG after taste. I've been coming here since I found this place a little bit after I moved to Seattle 2 years ago. Like everyone else who reviwed this place, their Bun Bo Hue is the best in the area BY FAR. I would even dare to say their Bun Bo Hue rivals or maybe even excels over the ones in the Little Saigon areas in So Cal's OC area. Their Mi Quang is very good as well and their Pho is the best I've had in Seattle. Yes their place looks and feels a like the hole in the hole in the wall and it's definitely beat up, but it is extremely clean. I've never had to wipe down my chopsticks or spoons because they are always spotless. I've even taken friends visiting from the Bolsa area (Little Saigon for those who don't know). They laughed about how run down this place looks but they agreed it is one of the best Bun Bo Hue's they've ever had and that's saying alot since where they come from Bun Bo Hue places are on every corner. Oh my, this place is one of my pho-vorite Vietnamese restaurants anywhere, mostly because of their 'best in Seattle' bun bo hue and other Central Vietnamese dishes. This place is located in a plaza in the heart of 98118, USA's most diverse zip code according to the most recent US census. The food and flavoring this restaurant is gear towards the local customer base and not the mainstream, so it is delicious and you will have to tell them to ease off on the spicy if you're into milder or bland food. The prices here are fair, there is parking, customer service is good, and you can get their via light rail as well as fulfull your shopping needs after you're done eating here as there's an abundance of other businesses around. I am a die-hard Bun Bo Hue lover - knowing this, my Vietnamese friend and his mom brought me here for lunch one afternoon. He warned me that this place looks sketchy and might not have the highest sanitary-looking conditions, but will give me one good-lickin bowl of Bun Bo Hue. Of course I agreed to go! Lo and behold, it was exceptional. I'm not sure how service usually is, but thankfully, my friend's mom is clearly a regular and we got superb service. I think it'd be a great help to bring someone who speaks Vietnamese as the servers don't seem to know much English. What makes this bowl of BBH authentic and especially yummy, is that they have whole pork knuckles, banana blossoms, chunks of pork's blood emerging through the beefy & shrimp pastey broth. Feel free to not eat any of these ingredients that don't appeal to you, but they definitely give great depth of flavor to the soup. This place has always been a childhood favorite. Even after I've moved, I always make the drive back to MLK because they serve the BEST and most authentic BBH around. The spice can be a little inconsistent from time to time, but I surely don't mind because the broth is just so flavorful. You also have an option to substitute for thinner noodles, add pork feet, take away pork blood, all around just customize your bowl to your liking! Besides their BBH, they also serve other noodles (pho, chowmein, vermicelli) and combo rice dishes! I also very much enjoy bun rieu, which is crab based with shrimp paste. The portions are hugeeee, I always have trouble finishing this one on my own, so I end up taking it home and can still enjoy it the same way. They also have appetizers such as egg rolls, spring rolls, and my absolute favorite go-to... banh bot loc (pork+shrimp filled tapioca) served with fish sauce; 20 pieces for $7. I can never get enough!!! Don't be thrown off by the looks of this place and the strange back door entrance. It is totally normal to enter from the back parking lot. The owner is always happy (probably bc his restaurant is always busy) and the soup, vegetables and meat are always consistently good. They're cheap, fast and very tastey. It is getting cold in seattle and a bowl of hot noodle soup is much needed! I had their bun Bo hue and really like it. The soup is rich and slightly toward the spicier side. It works quite well with the thicker noodles compare to pho. As a generation of Chinese that grew in a household with parents that were raised in Vietnam, our expectations for traditional Vietnamese cuisine are fairly high with an added standard for bun bo hue that is quite a bit higher. In addition, due to the fact that the restaurant touts having the best bun bo hue in Seattle, our group had become a bit reserved as our experience with bun bo hue in the International District have been fairly pleasant. Located adjacent to the light rail station, the restaurant maintains a rather unkempt atmosphere typical of restaurants owned by Vietnamese families that inherently reflect an importance on food rather than interior decor. With bars over the windows and an old television set playing Vietnamese musical performances; it is what we have come to love and expect from similarly owned Vietnamese restaurants. Lastly, the restaurant accepts only cash and the meals range from about five dollars for a small bowl of bun bo hue to seven dollars for a larger order. Though we would forget to review that actual food right? Of course we would save the best part of the review for last and the bun bo hue our group ordered definitely made us believers. Although our quest for the best bun bo hue is a continuous journey, our order at the Hoang Lan restaurant currently resides at the top of the list. I came here from all the rave reviews for Bun Bo Hue. I ordered Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) and Chao Tom (sugar cane shrimp). Chao Tom was not very good. It had too much stuff mixed in with shrimp. I won't order this here again. But I am not going to ding them for this dish since it is not their specialty. As for Bun Bo Hue, it's not the best I've had, but it will definitely satisfy my Bun Bo Hue craving. it could be the best in WA tho I haven't tried Pho So 1 yet. As a Californian, I've tried numerous Bun bo hue restaurants and I think Hoang Lan is up to par with some of the places in CA, maybe even better. This isn't the most attractive place to dine at and people usually enter from the backdoors. But all that doesn't really matter because this place serves really tasty and legit spicy beef noodles. My bowl was complete with pork blood, beef shank, pork patties and ham hock. Plus I love how there were plenty of fresh veggies, including dried banana peels because some restaurants don't usually serve these.
