High Hand Cafe is a spot you must try especially if you are in Loomis! I really enjoyed this experience as we were enclosed with a great big greenhouse above us and the outdoor area leading to the nursery. This place can get busy during the lunch hours but we were seated quickly and the host was so kind. Our server was also very kind and made sure we had plenty of time to review the menu. He kept checking on us and answered our questions. The food was delicious. I ate all of my sandwich and per my server's recommendation, I got the potato salad instead of the pasta salad. This potato salad was SO GOOD! I ate all of it and enjoyed every bite. When I go back, I would like to try a dessert. There was just no room today. Overall, this place is worth checking out! I am already looking forward to going back.

I've been wanting to visit here for a while. Friend made a reservation for a Wednesday afternoon. We shared a pastrami sandwich on a pretzel bun which was very good and just the right portion. All the food being served looked good. It was a nice atmosphere eating outside near the nursery. After lunch we walked through the nursery and shops. So much to see here. A nice afternoon trip.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the food is fresh and delicious, the service is impeccable, and the overall experience is immersive. I recommend this wonderful place to all! Whether you are on a first date, family outing or golden anniversary, this establishment has what you need..

Visited here with family to browse the nursery and have a nice meal. We waited not too long in line to be seated and our server was very attentive and accommodating. We ordered Fish Tacos, Prime Rib Sandwich, Chicken Cider Sandwich and Peach Salad. Each dish was very good, my fish tacos were stacked with perfectly grilled fish and the sauce was very delicious. The side salad and potatoe salad was also satisfactory. We enjoyed our meal and the experience but found the price rather high for the value. $19 for a simple peach salad seemed rather steep and the portion was not very large. Overall, this is worth checking out as the venue is very nice and the food quite good but I'm not sure if I would come back as the price tag is rather high.

Always a wonderful experience, we always continue to make our way back here and enjoy trying all the new options.

Recently saw photos of this place all over social media and knew it had to go on the list. Being that it was our first time I was so nervous about if you needed a reservation and how busy they would be. They were able to get us a table outside under the heating lamps in about a half hour. The food was fresh, flavorful and hot! I got the Smoked Brisket Hash with a side buttermilk biscuit and the seasonal spritz to drink. My date got to the banana bread french toast. I enjoyed my meal and the date enjoyed theirs as well. Staff were super friendly, they answered questions as well as made recommendations. Next time I would like to get there earlier or make a reservation as to sit inside. I did notice outside they had a counter top and stools where they do wood fired pizza, and would like to try that sometime too. Overall I really enjoyed my experience and will be back with friends & family.

The aesthetics here are gorgeous. It is nestled in high hand nursery and the live plants really do make the restaurant beautiful. I came on a busy weekend and waited 40 minutes for a table. It didn't feel that long because I was able to browse for a new plant while waiting. I had the pretzel 9/10. The beer cheese wasn't as strong as I would have liked it but it tasted delish. The crab Benedict 9/10. It was real crab and was fried beautifully. Overall the place was nice but the food was expensive. It's a nice treat.

We wanted to check this cafe out because it also has a nursery. We came on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. RSVP is highly recommended. The couple in front of us was given an hour wait time. The food was good but the service was top notch! Our server Logan was attentive and kind. The staff refilling water and tea didn't miss a beat. We were surrounded by beautiful plants and trees. We can't wait to come back and try their other items. Crab cakes had a great amount of crab. Loved their potato salad that came with the tuna sandwich. One of the best tuna sandwiches I've ever had. The orange salad was light and refreshing not overly dressed.

If you haven't been to High Hand Cafe, go. Immediately. The High Hand grounds include a full plant nursery, boutique shops, an art gallery, a brewery, and the cafe itself, so it's not just a meal, it's an experience. I ordered from the lunch menu and had the tri-tip sandwich, cooked perfectly with a buttery, smoky flavor balanced by avocado and a rich bleu cheese sauce. Every bite delivered and the portion was adequate. We started with mesquite chips and artichoke dip, which were absolutely delicious. But the true star of the meal was the house-made potato salad. It had dill and sweet pickles folded into a perfectly seasoned potato slaw. I'll definitely be back to try their brunch and explore more of the lunch menu. The wait was about 40 minutes, but there's so much to see while you wait. When your table is ready, they text you, which makes it easy to explore the grounds without hovering around the host stand. They also have live music near the brewery later in the evening (the live band schedule is on their website)

I'm giving this three stars mainly because of the front-of-house experience. We came for Sunday brunch and were quoted a 1-1.5 hr wait, which we were fine with. However, the hostess's attitude made the wait frustrating. She gave vague answers while looking visibly annoyed, avoided eye contact, and often sighed or rolled her eyes when guests asked about wait times. After the initial 1.5 hours had passed, someone from our group checked in and she sounded irritated just being asked for an update. We also had a child scrape his hand, and while I thought about asking for a Band-Aid, watching her interact with other guests made it clear it probably wasn't worth it, so we went back to our car for first aid. I understand it was a very busy day, but this is the first interaction guests have, and it really sets the tone of the rest of the meal. Once we were seated, the experience improved significantly. The setting is lovely, with gardens, a greenhouse, and a koi pond that makes waiting more enjoyable. The servers were friendly and helpful, made good recommendations, and everyone in our group enjoyed their food. Drinks were delicious too. Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere were excellent, but the hostess experience was disappointing enough to bring the rating down. This place would likely benefit from an additional hostess during peak hours or may be hire someone who actually wants to talk to people.

First time at High Hand Café and I'm really glad we made a reservation for a Saturday morning at 9am because this place gets packed. Parking was easy, but finding the café was part of the experience since you walk through the nursery before reaching the restaurant. The hostess greeted us right away and service was excellent from start to finish. We had the breakfast burrito and eggs Benedict. I ordered the garden Benedict and added bacon, which was a great call. The Benedict was good. The burritos were decent, probably around a 3.5 out of 5, but the potatoes were solid. Espresso was exactly what you would expect, simple and well done. The ambience is what really makes this place special. It feels like you are dining inside a bright, open greenhouse surrounded by plants and flowers. Tons of natural light, greenery everywhere, and just a really cool, relaxed vibe. Easily one of the more unique cafés in the Placer County area. After eating we walked around the nursery, which has a koi pond, beautiful plants, a great succulent selection, and a few little shops tucked throughout. Overall a really cool spot and somewhere I would definitely bring friends from out of town. I would absolutely come back.

Be sure to reserve ahead of time on their website! I can see why this place gets busy, especially with large parties to partake in festivities together, surrounded by beautiful nature scenery. That being said, make no mistake you're paying for the gorgeous ambience and scenery. IMHO, the food was mediocre. Service was fantastic and, with our reservation, our party of 5 was seated promptly. Food was good, don't get me wrong, but not worth all the hype surrounding the tons of egg benedict reviews and at the price point compared to others similar. We've had much better egg benedict worth around the same price, if not cheaper. Was also shocked when pancakes for $17 only included 2 pancakes, not even blueberry pancakes were available per our server. Pancakes were medicore.. we've had better from mom and pops breakfast joints. Breakfast burrito was subpar compared to other Mexican spots. Crab cakes were decent, but not anything special nor at the level of other steakhouses at the same price point. This eatery is wonderful for any occasion if you're looking for gorgeuous surroundings, especially with incredible greenery all around. Just don't expect much from the food. We were told the wild hibiscus sparkler was popular and tasty so we went with it instead of the classic mimosas. We beg to differ.. should've stuck to the original plan with mimosas! Definitely recommend to give this spot a try, if you haven't already. Although we won't be returning, we were grateful for the experience!

Ask the Community - High Hand Cafe

Is it dog friendly?

Call ahead, may be allowed outside.

Does anyone know if the garden dining would be hot during the summer months?

Not hot. They have good air conditioning. Been there summer and winter both. It's inside a large green house.

Do they offer brunch on weekdays?

I believe brunch is served only on the weekends.

Hi, does anyone know what's in the artichoke dip? I want to take my parent here but my step dad has food allergies.

Is this open today for Christmas Eve?

Till 3pm.

Is this place dog friendly?

Absolutely! In the cafe dogs are allowed on our patio and nursery seating but not in the greenhouse. The only other places we ask you to be mindful of bringing your dogs would be the art gallery and the olive oil store. We look forward to seeing you…

Do you take reservations?

Yes

What are the vegan options?

Vegetarian wrap, salads

I'm looking at the menu photos and it seems to change slightly. Is it a good place for vegetarians? Menu looks average. I'm coming here this weekend -- not my choice -- but I'm hoping to get something besides salad.

They have pizza which is good and some have no meat. They have a portobello sandwich. Everything is good here. We love this place.

Do they have any gluten free options?

They have some delicious meal sized salads!

Is the kitchen and waitstaff willing to work with dietary needs? I see no mention of any gluten free alternatives. Is there a children's menu?

It's not a great place for kids and they definitely don't have a kids menu

Can I book a table for 6 on Sunday?

Yes, they actually prefer reservations for groups. If you show up on the weekends without a reservation, you'll be waiting 1 1/2 - 2 hours, minimum.

The only downside was the bar service. There was only one bartender working, and our drinks took almost as long to arrive as our food. I ordered an extra dirty martini with olives, but when it arrived, it was essentially just vodka and did not have the dirty olive brine I had requested. I asked for some additional olive juice on the side so I could correct the drink myself, but unfortunately, that took another 30 minutes to arrive. That being said, the food absolutely stole the show. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals, and we were genuinely impressed by the quality, presentation, and flavor. I would absolutely come back for the food and would love to give them another try. Hopefully, with a little more support behind the bar, the service will match the quality of the food.

I left feeling hungry and uncomfortable after spending $80 on dinner. I was most disappointed in my "large plate" option of crab stuffed salmon. It was maybe a 3 oz filet with a half ounce of crab meat in a tiny dollop on top of the filet. It was on a bed of 1/4 cup of corn with a couple cherry tomatoes and shishito peppers. The cilantro lime crema was tasty. Again, meal was fine, but $44? Wine was $18 (typical bottle sells retail for $50), so they are making a killing there. My friends and I split the blue cheese stuffed dates. They were also good and I forget the price, but it only included 4. The benches outside were hard and a weird distance and height from the table. I don't want to be uncomfortable while eating an expensive meal. Service was fine. Nothing remarkable or unpleasant. She cleared out plates and silverware which had us eating the last of the potato side dish with our hands. From the moment I walked through the doors, the first thing I noticed was how pristine the establishment was. A clean environment always sets a great tone for a meal, and this place immediately felt welcoming and well-maintained. The positive first impression only got better once I was seated. The service here is truly top-tier. My server, Hailey, did a fantastic job throughout the evening. She was attentive, friendly, and ensured that my dining experience flowed seamlessly from start to finish. Good service can make or break a night out, and Hailey definitely elevated mine. As for the food, I started my meal with the Caesar salad. Unfortunately, it was missing the anchovies, which was a bit of a letdown for a classic Caesar. However, despite that missing ingredient, the salad itself was still incredibly fresh, crisp, and very tasty overall. For the main course, I opted for the Ale-Braised Short Rib. The execution on the meat was phenomenal; the short rib was exceptionally tender and practically pulled apart with a fork. It was paired beautifully with a side of smooth, savory mashed potatoes. My only minor critique of the main dish came down to the presentation of the vegetables. The carrots were served with their stems still attached. While it may add a rustic aesthetic, I am generally not a big fan of having non-edible items served on my plate. I wrapped up the evening on a high note with their seasonal mango cheesecake. This dessert was an absolute standout. The kitchen did not skimp on the fruit, loading the dessert with generous chunks of fresh, sweet mango. The cheesecake base itself was the perfect texture because it was incredibly rich, dense, and creamy without being overly heavy. It was the perfect finale to a wonderful dinner. The bottom line is that this restaurant delivers a winning combination of excellent service and high-quality food. Despite the missing anchovies and the small presentation quirk with the carrots, the overall experience easily passed muster. I will definitely be returning.

A Friday Night Home Run at Penryn Grill!…read more This was our third visit to Penryn Grill, and someone suggested we come back on a Friday night for the clam chowder and fish & chips. Let me just say...it was absolutely worth the return trip! First, the clam chowder. My wife gave it a 10 out of 10, and that's saying something because she's a self-proclaimed clam chowder snob. She rarely finds a chowder that can compete with her favorite spots in Monterey. Well...hallelujah--we finally found one! The bread bowl deserves its own standing ovation. It tasted like fresh sourdough that had just come out of the oven--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely delicious. Normally you finish the chowder and leave most of the bread behind. Not this time. I ate every single bite of that bread bowl. It was simply scrumptious. The fish and chips were equally impressive. They served a huge plank of fish that was lightly battered and cooked perfectly. Too many restaurants hide a tiny piece of fish under a mountain of batter, leaving you feeling disappointed (and overly full). Not Penryn Grill. The fish was fresh, flaky, and outstanding. In fact, it was the first time in our 43 years of marriage that I've seen my wife finish every bite of her fish and chips! The chips were another pleasant surprise. Instead of the usual thick fries, they were thinly shaved, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely addictive. We'd never had them prepared that way before, and they were a home run. Of course, I couldn't leave without ordering what I consider Penryn Grill's signature dish--the shrimp tacos. They are hands down the best around. Perfectly seasoned, loaded with flavor, and honestly worthy of ordering every single visit. The atmosphere was terrific. We loved the live '80s music, the service was fantastic as always, and our waitress graciously endured my terrible jokes with a smile. That's five-star service in my book. As retirees, we're always on the hunt for a place that serves a great meal at a great value, and Penryn Grill checks every box. One tip: If you're planning to go on a Friday for the chowder and fish & chips, arrive between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. They regularly sell out--and after this meal, it's easy to understand why. We'll definitely be back...again!
