This is one of the best little coffee shops/bakeries in south Eugene. It's truly "hidden away" behind Mazzi's, and what a perfect hiding spot it is! Awesome covered/uncovered patio area with sand area for kids, cozy indoor area with fireplaces- and of course, great pastries & coffee. Their cookies, magic bars (I think that's the name), and pretty much every baked good I've had has been fantastic. They also have some lunch items, the peanut veggie bowl was great for a quick lunch. Mazzi's Pizza is as good at it gets. Period. I reserve this rating for fare that is exceptional. There are a few gems in Eugene. (Toshi's Ramen is among them, especially when Toshi's working the kitchen.) But Mazzi has something special here. The ingredients are local and prepared to perfection. We had sausage and roasted carrot pizza last night. I'll admit I wasn't thrilled that my wife had ordered pizza with carrots. But it was exquisite. The carrots were the best part, roasted, and anointed with just the right amount of what I think was chili oil. Portland's food scene overshadows Eugene, as it should. But Mazzi's Tuesday night pizza scene is a highlight. (One suggestion: Add Oakshire brews to the beverage options.) read more

I go weekly to get some bread and pasta. I'm not a fan of their americano, and I will never order day old bread again, when I got home the loaf was burnt and hard as a rock. Stick to the fresh and visible items and you won't be disappointed. Wonderful place to go get a loaf of organic, homemade bread or pastries. I came here with my slow food group once to bake bread. Fun experience! They have an oven that is toasty to warm up near in the colder months. In the warmer months, you can sit outside to enjoy a cup of chai, tea or coffee as the kids run around and play in the sand. I visited Hideaway with my boyfriend this morning and it was a really nice experience. Parking is sparse on the side closest to the bakery, but there is more on the other side of the building (closer to Mazzi's entrance). We initially walked into the indoor seating area instead of the cafe because the front entrance was poorly marked...oops! The woman to took our order was super friendly and, despite some of the negative reviews about service being slow, our service was really quick. We ordered a turkey and cheese croissant - my boyfriend admitted the croissant was the best part about it and he would just order a plain one next time - and two drinks. Everything was great. The food tasted wonderful and their bakery selection was fairly extensive. Next time I would get one of the blueberry cream vessels, it looked fantastic. We ate outside. I went here on Sunday around 2 o'clock to order a turkey sandwich to go before meeting a friend. After 10 minutes of waiting I went in to check on my order. They said not yet. After 20 minutes I was standing by the pick up window and I asked to know if my order was almost ready. They said they were busy and asked me if I was in a hurry. About 10 minutes later my sandwich appears. I was kind of surprised at the portions for the price. It all tasted good until I felt a hard sharp object in my mouth. The Hideaway Bakery is attached to Mazzy's Restaurant, in the back. The bakery has a large bread oven in the center and a small area where you can pick from their selection of amazing organic breads, pasteries, cakes, and other treats. Some of my favorites are the pain du chocolat, the cinnamon rolls, and the potato donuts (donuts are only available on Sundays I think...). They also have organic coffee, espresso, & HeartSong Chai. There is a covered sitting area outside, that is very pleasant with a really cool sandbox for kids. They've opened up the back of Mazzy's on cold days, and you can sit by the fire inside. Cramped area where you order and pay is uncomfortable but in the summer the outdoor seating is really nice. They have a play area for kids which I think is a nice idea. Delicious! I had the best sandwich here which was chicken and pesto. It was so good and the bread was amazing which I think really makes the sandwich. We even bought a loaf before we left and I had it every morning for breakfast for nearly a week! So good. Also, the desserts were a treat. I've been a regular since they opened. Its so wonderful to see a face-lift for this location with the co-creative spirit of the two different generations with two complimentary businesses sharing it now. I must say organic and local are my thing, and theirs too. Really. They don't do it all organic, but they'll be honest about what is and isn't, which I cannot say about most of the green washed places these days. And some ingredients are even grown bio-dynamically on their small farm. These guys work hard, baking, growing, holding farmer's markets, attending other farmers markets, they're everywhere. I hope they don't burn out. I like them too much for that. My favorite bread: green olive And contrary to what I read from some readers, Ive always liked the service....but usually I'm not a difficult customer either. I do wish it was bigger...I dont like running the gauntlet,but then their overhead would be higher, and my food would be higher as a result, too. read more

BEST COFFEE SHOP IN EUGENE! Their coffee is amazing. I love their breakfast/lunch options too. The breakfast wrapless and chilaquiles are my favorite! If you go on the weekends there are usually some specials that I always try. The patio in the summer and fireplace areas in the winter make it a perfect location all year round. I really enjoyed their homemade chicken tamale - very flavorful with a knockout red chili sauce and a pico de gallo and black beans on the side. They let me sub in an enchilada for one of the two tamales, so I got a poblano cheese enchilada, which was also excellent with just the right amount of heat. I lived in New Mexico for awhile and these were NM worthy. Their cook knows her chilis! Oh! And don't forget the marionberry cream cheese vessel. I really dig this place for a light lunch or pastry: fresh, tasty combinations for salads and sandwiches, and a nice outdoor eating area (as long as you don't mind kids). Especially around lunchtime the wait times on food are kind of absurd (~30m the last time), but if you time it right the turnaround isn't a problem. The baguette I got was good but not fantastic, and I'm looking forward to trying their pastas. Hint: try a mix of their ice teas; hibiscus+mint is super refreshing! read more

I love when I walk into a local business and immediately realize that it's my new favorite place. I am fortunate to have Hideaway Bakery located in my neighborhood but I would easily drive across town for their fresh pastries and rich coffee. After waking up super early on a Sunday morning I checked their hours and saw they are open at 7am everyday which was perfect considering other bakeries open a bit later on Sundays. They are located right next to Mazzi's and share a parking lot but don't worry, while they are hidden away like their name suggests their signs (and smell of fresh baked bread) will guide you to their patio and front door. Old and nostalgic music was playing while my eyes grazed each case of goodies and the smell of fresh dough and pasta filled my nose. Cupcakes, lemon tarts, bagels, baguettes, olive bread, sourdough, cookies, croissants of many kinds, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls fill the cases and will tempt any foodie out there. They do have a few vegan options here too! We ordered a ham and cheese croissant, almond croissant and a marion berry cream cheese pastry with a spicy chai latte. The croissants were flaky, buttery and perfectly filled with ham and cheese. The marion berry pastry was tasty but a little rich for me, I just couldn't resist giving it a try. The coffee was amazing and it makes me wish I drank coffee more often. They have a mayan spiced mocha and a few other spiced coffee drinks that sounds amazing as well as a lavender latte...yum! They sell pasta by the pound here and I heard some days they make pizza. I'm so happy I found this place and can't wait to take friends and family who visit to give it a try too. read more

I've been to Hideaway Bakery a number of times. The baked goods are pretty good - not superb, but solid. In fairness I have not tried the breads themselves and these are what other reviewers rave about. I have had things like muffins and specialty breads (like banana bread) and they were pretty good. The Pastie was quite tasty, but seemed to take FOREVER to get to me. And herein lies the issue. The factor that I consider when I go to Hideway is the time it takes to get served. The service is not very efficient and they serve one...person....at.....a.....time..... Maybe this is attributable to the no-microwave-style culture, or maybe they have lots of time on their hands. But for me, a busy parent, I don't always have 15-20 minutes to wait for something to knosh on. So when time is an issue I head to somewhere like market of choice. Even considering parking and their lines, it can be faster and the quality is about the same. The outdoor terrace is nice, though. If you have some time, and a little tyke to play in the sand, it is a very pleasant place to sit. read more

Scrambled eggs with leafy veggies and sauteed bell peppers and onions on a crusted seedy bagel with cream cheese sure does wonders with waking you up in the morning! Hideaway is one of my favorite stops in Eugene. As the name implies, this community gem manages to be inconspicuously tucked away in a location that's simple enough to get to, if you know where you're going. I discovered Hideaway rather by accident one Summer evening during an outdoor pizza night. (Pizza Nights are a wonderful outdoor Summer event, but I'll save that topic for a separate review.) Hideaway bakery features wonderful hand crafted savory and sweet baked goods with the pleasant inclusion of gluten free options. The setting is pleasantly relaxed, with covered outdoor and indoor seating options. Cool and damp weather is tempered by radiant heaters in the outdoor seating area; but if that's too Spartan retreat indoors and grab a seat near the fireplace. It's a win-win scenario. The baked goods are among the best around, coffee's great, pleasant community feel, and the staff is casual yet attentive. There's plenty more to say about this delightful neighborhood bakery & coffee shop, all of it positive. Stop by and enjoy it yourself, just be sure to leave me a GF pastry. read more

They surely have the best bread ever ...and yes, service is slow and when you get your supposed warmed up baked goods; maybe they will be maybe they won't. Make sure that they keep an eye on your order so it comes out to your liking and not overly crisped or singed.. It is a bit haphazard there but still worth the price of admission. It is tucked behind a big restaurant (Mazzos) and you do not see it from the street. I went on weekday and it was a tad busyish so I can imagine the crowd on the weekend. My Airbnb host says it's over the top busy when the sun is out. It's in a stretch of town that is out and away from town center. So if a place offers a superior product, they will come...simple as that. This place strives for this and it is a super duper place for breakfast, breads and morning sweets. The selection is fantastic and I would be surprised if you didn't think the same. There is one situation. The indoor part is dark and depressing. It doesn't fit and needs "bakery style" updated. It look like a part of the old restaurant attached. The place is grimy dirty; look at the doors and around. When I was there for my third visit I sat inside cause of the rain and there was crumbs and food stuff all over the floor. It appears that they don't keep up appearances. The internet was not working. It took a suggestion of two people to put a sign on the door....they put it on the tip jar. We were both wondering why we couldn't access out laptops. But they sure have amazing eats !!!! absolutely fantastic, just in a unclean environment. read more

Fantastic baked goods and food! What a sweet gem this is. Tucked away in an industrial/corporate office section of Eugene, one would never discover this sweet cafe with outside patio seating complete with Tibetan prayer flags flying overhead. Service is friendly but oh-so-slow. The line up area to order food is not the most efficient but it does work. Outside seating space is fantastic with ample parking. I am a fan, mostly of their location, the espresso, the local-ness, the organic-ness and the atmosphere. I don't mind crowded places so if you do don't go on a Saturday morning. I don't mind walking down a hallway to give my order. I have never had bad service or found the employees to be snooty. Quite the opposite really. I tend to stick to downtown, as there is plenty of coffee closer to me, which is the only reason I have avoided Hideaway for so long. Let me tell you, that was a mistake: everything I have had there has been awesome. My mom, who is a huge coffee snob, fell in love with their coffee while visiting over the holidays, and while I am much less adept at coffee snobbery, even I can tell they make damn good coffee. In terms of food, the loaf of bread I got was great, the bagels were chewy and good, and their ravioli was fantastic. We got the Sundried Tomato Chevre and the Spinach Cheese for our Christmas dinner, and they did not disappoint. I will definitely be going back for both their coffee and their array of other goodies. read more

Note - this is a review for the lunch menu only, not the baked goods. Bakery = 5 stars for quality. I like hideaway bakery's lunchtime offerings. They have particularly good salads and their sandwiches and other entrees are solid. My bone to pick with them is their inconsistent quality. It's so bad! I sometimes hesitate to come because it's disappointing to get a poor quality version of something you enjoy, and pay full price for it. Every single time I've ordered a salad the prep and presentation has been different. Sometimes dressings are thick and creamy, sometimes they are super runny. Will the tempeh on my salad be steaks, or strips, or tiny chunks this time. Will the plate overflow with lettuce, or will it be a single handful. Will I need to throw a life preserver on the plate or ask for another side of dressing. What will the ratio of vegetables to lettuce be, and will each ingredient be in its own pile or pre-tossed, you can't know. Some variation between chefs is normal, and I think encouraged. But it also makes sense to have certain plating and food ratios set. Love you hideaway! I'll not stop eating lunch here and your staff are always wonderful. read more

The food is great, this review is in regards to the service and internet quality. We went here with a group last weekend to work on a project because I love the atmosphere and had had great food here. Unfortunately the internet wasn't working. When I asked the woman behind the counter about it she said "Oh yeah it doesn't work very well. I'll try to reset it for you. It might be too busy though." I'm not sure if she meant too many people were using the internet (I saw one other person with a computer out) or if the cafe was too busy for someone to take a second to reset the internet (There were multiple empty tables and I have seen tho splice completely full). Anyway she was rude and it bothered me because I was the one who had suggested Hideaway to the group. Bottom line=Do not go here if you are trying to study or get work done if you need the internet. read more
