For what I get when I go here, which is a ham-and-cheese croissant, a cappuccino, and sometimes some bread for meals later in the day or week, this place can't be beat. I'd never consider getting bread or breakfast pastries from anywhere else in town. Not worth the inevitable disappointment. But on the rare occasions where I've gone in for lunch or a full made-to-order breakfast, it's been slow, crowded, and kinda pricey. Just stick to the breakfast bread products and coffee and you won't be disappointed. I prefer to eat outside on the (covered, space-heated, hanging-plant-festooned) patio rather than inside, because the nonverbal shrieks of the kids in the sandbox are more pleasant to listen to, more firmly rooted in reality, than some of the conversations you'll overhear from the adult South Eugenians sitting by the fire inside. Mazzi's Pizza is as good at it gets. Period. I reserve this rating for fare that is exceptional. There are a few gems in Eugene. (Toshi's Ramen is among them, especially when Toshi's working the kitchen.) But Mazzi has something special here. The ingredients are local and prepared to perfection. We had sausage and roasted carrot pizza last night. I'll admit I wasn't thrilled that my wife had ordered pizza with carrots. But it was exquisite. The carrots were the best part, roasted, and anointed with just the right amount of what I think was chili oil. Portland's food scene overshadows Eugene, as it should. But Mazzi's Tuesday night pizza scene is a highlight. (One suggestion: Add Oakshire brews to the beverage options.) read more

OMG! I have really enjoyed all the lovely breads and desserts I've devoured from Hideaway for almost four years now. For my birthday I stopped in and picked up two different sweet treats to share w/ a couple friends. The chocolate layer cake and chocolate mousse were divine! The fact that the ingredients are ORGANIC made my celebration the best ever! I started on the Keto diet so I won't be able to partake in the breads or sweets (unless they start using almond meal/coconut flour and alternative sweeteners like Lakanto sweetener-hint hint) very often. Wonderful place to go get a loaf of organic, homemade bread or pastries. I came here with my slow food group once to bake bread. Fun experience! They have an oven that is toasty to warm up near in the colder months. In the warmer months, you can sit outside to enjoy a cup of chai, tea or coffee as the kids run around and play in the sand. I visited Hideaway with my boyfriend this morning and it was a really nice experience. Parking is sparse on the side closest to the bakery, but there is more on the other side of the building (closer to Mazzi's entrance). We initially walked into the indoor seating area instead of the cafe because the front entrance was poorly marked...oops! The woman to took our order was super friendly and, despite some of the negative reviews about service being slow, our service was really quick. We ordered a turkey and cheese croissant - my boyfriend admitted the croissant was the best part about it and he would just order a plain one next time - and two drinks. Everything was great. The food tasted wonderful and their bakery selection was fairly extensive. Next time I would get one of the blueberry cream vessels, it looked fantastic. We ate outside. I went here on Sunday around 2 o'clock to order a turkey sandwich to go before meeting a friend. After 10 minutes of waiting I went in to check on my order. They said not yet. After 20 minutes I was standing by the pick up window and I asked to know if my order was almost ready. They said they were busy and asked me if I was in a hurry. Already leery of a 10$ burrito , 12 with tip, i requested tofu instead of egg , no sour cream , no black beans. I'm not vegan so it wouldn't kill me I just didn't feel like those items. I also understand mistakes happen , it's how you respond to them that makes or breaks the customer experience. Burrito had : egg , Black beans and sour cream only . Returning the burrito was met with , lack of interest and attitude from both the cook and the barista who took the order. They refunded the 10$ not the tip. That's fine. I've never written a review . tl;dr The Hideaway Bakery eatery is not safe for people with food allergies. I just spent the entire day consoling my little one as they cried in pain, spit up, and suffered severe gastrointestinal upset from an allergic reaction to dairy. I called ahead to verify with Hideaway that they could safely serve someone with a dairy allergy. They said yes. When ordering, we made clear there was a dairy allergy and were told yes the food could be made dairy free. I walked over to the people cooking the meals in the outdoor area where they prepare food and reiterated that the no dairy was for a dairy allergy. Halfway through the meal, I notice there is some shredded cheese under some of the potatoes. Uh oh. That probably also means they weren't careful about cross contamination. Double uh oh. And sure enough - an allergic reaction when we get home. I get that it's hard to accommodate allergies. But either do it right or tell me you can't do it. Either is fine. What isn't fine is saying an allergy can be accommodated and then not taking proper care in preparing the food. so, one star. I'd give none if I could. For those without allergies, your review is below. The good: food is really tasty. I had a breakfast burrito (no tortilla as they were out of them) that had a well flavored red salsa and decent amount of filling. The specialty coffees they make are also tasty and there is a large variety of flavors to choose from. In addition to the food served at the cafe, they sell packages of frozen raviolis that they make that are absolutely delicious. Their sourdough is probably my favorite from a Eugene bakery. The bad: The service at the bakery is poor. We ordered two drinks, one was the wrong drink. We ordered food and, well, I already talked about that. You have to stand outside and wait for your name to be called if you order food or drinks, which means that you have to sit outside if you want to be able to chat with your companions while waiting for food. Or you have to all stand around and wait together, then find somewhere to sit after the food and drinks are ready (they will not all be ready at the same time). I would probably just buy their bakery goods at market of choice rather than going to the bakery itself and dealing with the disorganization. read more

Let me be clear: If you're looking for fantastic pastries and coffee, this place hit it out of the park. We wanted to order one of everything and it smelled absolutely heavenly! Skip the flourless chocolate cake (chocolate coating was too thick), but otherwise everything was delicious. BUT they missed the mark on customer service big time. We weren't given any instructions on their odd flow of service, the girl simply said "you're all done here" and we awkwardly waited at our table for awhile before we realized there was a pick up window on the outside of the building. The Hideaway Bakery is attached to Mazzy's Restaurant, in the back. The bakery has a large bread oven in the center and a small area where you can pick from their selection of amazing organic breads, pasteries, cakes, and other treats. Some of my favorites are the pain du chocolat, the cinnamon rolls, and the potato donuts (donuts are only available on Sundays I think...). They also have organic coffee, espresso, & HeartSong Chai. There is a covered sitting area outside, that is very pleasant with a really cool sandbox for kids. They've opened up the back of Mazzy's on cold days, and you can sit by the fire inside. Cramped area where you order and pay is uncomfortable but in the summer the outdoor seating is really nice. They have a play area for kids which I think is a nice idea. This is one of the best little coffee shops/bakeries in south Eugene. It's truly "hidden away" behind Mazzi's, and what a perfect hiding spot it is! Awesome covered/uncovered patio area with sand area for kids, cozy indoor area with fireplaces- and of course, great pastries & coffee. Their cookies, magic bars (I think that's the name), and pretty much every baked good I've had has been fantastic. They also have some lunch items, the peanut veggie bowl was great for a quick lunch. I've been a regular since they opened. Its so wonderful to see a face-lift for this location with the co-creative spirit of the two different generations with two complimentary businesses sharing it now. I must say organic and local are my thing, and theirs too. Really. They don't do it all organic, but they'll be honest about what is and isn't, which I cannot say about most of the green washed places these days. And some ingredients are even grown bio-dynamically on their small farm. These guys work hard, baking, growing, holding farmer's markets, attending other farmers markets, they're everywhere. I hope they don't burn out. I like them too much for that. My favorite bread: green olive And contrary to what I read from some readers, Ive always liked the service....but usually I'm not a difficult customer either. I really enjoyed their homemade chicken tamale - very flavorful with a knockout red chili sauce and a pico de gallo and black beans on the side. They let me sub in an enchilada for one of the two tamales, so I got a poblano cheese enchilada, which was also excellent with just the right amount of heat. I really dig this place for a light lunch or pastry: fresh, tasty combinations for salads and sandwiches, and a nice outdoor eating area (as long as you don't mind kids). Especially around lunchtime the wait times on food are kind of absurd (~30m the last time), but if you time it right the turnaround isn't a problem. The food is so amazing. All the veggies are grown next door so the food tastes amazingly fresh! And the shop smells like heaven! The staff is quite friendly. There is a big selection of pastries. It's a nice location if you want to go to study and eat or talk with a couple people. It's very quiet and relaxing, so it would be nice for a date or just for conversation. Delicious! I had the best sandwich here which was chicken and pesto. It was so good and the bread was amazing which I think really makes the sandwich. We even bought a loaf before we left and I had it every morning for breakfast for nearly a week! So good. Also, the desserts were a treat. I've been to Hideaway Bakery a number of times. The baked goods are pretty good - not superb, but solid. In fairness I have not tried the breads themselves and these are what other reviewers rave about. I have had things like muffins and specialty breads (like banana bread) and they were pretty good. The Pastie was quite tasty, but seemed to take FOREVER to get to me. And herein lies the issue. The factor that I consider when I go to Hideway is the time it takes to get served. The service is not very efficient and they serve one...person....at.....a.....time..... Maybe this is attributable to the no-microwave-style culture, or maybe they have lots of time on their hands. But for me, a busy parent, I don't always have 15-20 minutes to wait for something to knosh on. So when time is an issue I head to somewhere like market of choice. Even considering parking and their lines, it can be faster and the quality is about the same. The outdoor terrace is nice, though. If you have some time, and a little tyke to play in the sand, it is a very pleasant place to sit. read more

Hideaway is one of my favorite stops in Eugene. As the name implies, this community gem manages to be inconspicuously tucked away in a location that's simple enough to get to, if you know where you're going. I discovered Hideaway rather by accident one Summer evening during an outdoor pizza night. (Pizza Nights are a wonderful outdoor Summer event, but I'll save that topic for a separate review.) Hideaway bakery features wonderful hand crafted savory and sweet baked goods with the pleasant inclusion of gluten free options. The setting is pleasantly relaxed, with covered outdoor and indoor seating options. Cool and damp weather is tempered by radiant heaters in the outdoor seating area; but if that's too Spartan retreat indoors and grab a seat near the fireplace. It's a win-win scenario. The baked goods are among the best around, coffee's great, pleasant community feel, and the staff is casual yet attentive. BEST COFFEE SHOP IN EUGENE! Their coffee is amazing. I love their breakfast/lunch options too. The breakfast wrapless and chilaquiles are my favorite! If you go on the weekends there are usually some specials that I always try. The patio in the summer and fireplace areas in the winter make it a perfect location all year round. Didn't try the scones but did have the "Hideaway Breakfast Sandwich." Scrambled eggs with leafy veggies and sauteed bell peppers and onions on a crusted seedy bagel with cream cheese sure does wonders with waking you up in the morning! There was a quaint farmers market outside as well with local organic produce and fruit roll-ups on sale. I am a fan, mostly of their location, the espresso, the local-ness, the organic-ness and the atmosphere. I don't mind crowded places so if you do don't go on a Saturday morning. I don't mind walking down a hallway to give my order. I have never had bad service or found the employees to be snooty. Quite the opposite really.
