Big shout out to George and his wonderful staff for giving us such a great venue for my "Dad's Celebration of Life". This is by far our families favorite Greek Restaurant. George and I arranged a pre-set lunch menu with appetizers for truly an unknown number of attendees. I did give him an approximate number about an hour prior to arrival. He was all set up and ready to go as we assembled in the parking lot. The seating was arranged in their outside (weather protected) casual area. We could easily see everyone. Appetizers of deconstructed Greek Salads and grilled haloumi with pita to start. All guests had choices of either chicken, beef gyro or falafel over rice. A few also snuck in their favorites like french fries and avagelemeno soup. Everything was delicious and plentiful. The staff as always were, friendly, attentive and accommodating. We were there Saturday with friends. Food was great as is the service, a perfect welcoming place to finish up our Saturday gathering.

The missing star is because the place isn't pretty inside. However the food is so good, it doesn't need to be. (But a bit of decorating would be nice) Service is casual and friendly. Food: if this place was a Siendfeld episode, the title would be "The best BLANK I ever had" because fill in the BLANK with anything on the menu...and it's likely to be the best you ever had. Example: Turkey Club, Fresh Cut fries and an Arnold Palmer. Best, Best and Best. When a place can blow you away with a turkey sandwich, imagine what happens when you order an entree.... Used to Be a Local Gem--Now Lacking the Heart (and Flavor) We used to walk into Hellenic and be greeted with a warm wave and a smile from John, the owner. It felt like home. The lemonades were the perfect mix of tart and sweet, the salads were fresh and mouth-watering, and the gyros and souvlaki were packed with flavor--your taste buds would dance. The baklava? Absolutely divine. Every meal felt like a celebration of Greek cooking done right. Lately, though, something's changed. While the lemonades and salads still hold up, and the saganaki is tasty (even if it now comes without lemon), much of the rest has taken a noticeable dip. The feast platter, once a showcase of the kitchen's talent, now feels like an afterthought--bland, dry, under-seasoned, and in some cases, not fully cooked. The gyros and souvlaki that used to shine are now just... forgettable. Gone too is the personal touch. No more friendly wave from the chef, no sense of connection. It's grown too big, too busy, and in chasing expansion, it seems to have lost what made it special. Hellenic used to be a place where locals gathered, where families came together over great food. Now, it feels like it's catering to tourists who don't know what they're missing. It's genuinely sad to see such a beloved spot lose its way. My friends go here every time they visit LI. This was my 1st time. We had a wonderful meal. The grape leaves ( dolmades), grilled octopus and red beets and skordalia, for an appetizer and then the horiatiki salad, the lamb souvlaki, lamb Bekri, and shrimp, spinach & orzo, was excellent! Cute lunch spot after a ferry ride. They have an indoor and outdoor area. I got the lamb over rice dish. Large dish super delish with tomatoes and onions. Rice was aromatic and flavorful. The calamari appetizer was a huge let down. We asked the waiter to compare the half size and full size amount. He portrayed the size with his hands and when it comes out he was comparing the plate not the amount of calamari. Super overpriced for the amount we got. The photo is what we got minus 2 rings. Shrimp orzo was also small dish for the price. Service was a little slow but it was a busy lunch hour and on a weekend. Response to owner: this was around mid-August. read more

Most garbage food on the north fork. How they can call this Greek food is beyond me. Souvlaki is sliced tomatoes over yellow rice. The dips are disgusting. Hummus from Costco is better. Literally inedible . And their small sized ice cream is $8.00 and they actually weigh it. It's shameful .. and melts in 2 minutes. Totally robbery. How this place has stayed in business is shocking and of call themselves a Greek restaurant is actually lying. It's worse than any diner I've been to in my entire life. read more

I stopped in with a friend during March for a light lunch. We were seated in the warm kitchen area upon entry and our server brought menus and a friendly greeting. We split an appetizer and a cheese please plate and were very happy with our selections. We ordered the tender broiled octopus which came with olives, sliced cucumber and pita. It was tender and tasteful. We also shared the Saganaki with tomatoes which is baked Kefalograviera cheese over bubbling marinated tomatoes also delicious. Overall a great experience. read more

We all have had that occasion, when you frequented a place for its consistency in fresh good Greek cuisine in the North Fork for 25+ years with family and friends, plus you highly recommend that place to new friends, and... Suddenly, you go and discover It has sadly, quite sadly and unfortunately Gone down-hill... This is the scenerio we experienced today after a stellar week out here on the North Fork. We ordered take-out and went to our hotel 5 minutes away to eat immediately as we were very hungry. The food never sat in the container long, and trust having had take-out at many restaurants in Astoria over the years. Sorry, we do know good take-out especially during the pandemic. Sorry, George, we are loyal customers for 25+ years. We love your place but for now we cannot recommend. I seriously hate to give two stars, but my family and friends here have given their views. A recent lunch at Hellenic was amazing: The lemonade is one of their signature drinks and never disappoints. Chicken souvalki was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. My Greek cousin was craving some good spanakopita and she enjoyed it thoroughly.The service at Hellenic is prompt, friendly and servers are well versed about the menu, as they are happy to make suggestions Hellenic Snackbar is nicely decorated and seating options include indoor, outdoor and shaded patio. Driving from Mount Sinai isn't exactly around the corner, but Hellenic is always worth the ride. Earlier today my wife and I did takeout and had the pleasure of seeing Heidi at checkout once again. She was our first waitress back in the day, and lucky us, she packed up our order. Her warmth, charm, enthusiasm, and deep knowledge of the restaurant are unmatched, and she kindly let us know that Hellenic will be closing soon for a winter break and reopening in mid-February. Hellenic is truly our happy place. I've literally been driving past this spot since 1976, and only in the last year did I finally stop in and discover what I now consider the best Greek restaurant from Manhattan to East Marion and all points in between. The food is consistently outstanding, and the wait staff have been charming and professional time after time. A sincere thank you to George and his late Father, for creating and maintaining this diamond of an establishment. Looking forward to many more visits in the years to come. July 2025 I ate here was disappointed wrote a negative review. The owner George found my thumbnail ( was used for my biz) emailed me offered a very generous gift card, 3 months later I emailed i was coming to use it. We called ahead to make a dinner reservation, was told they do not take reservations. Upon arrival we requested an outdoor table under the covered patio. Was informed by the rude hostess that the only outdoor table was on the grass. There were 6 visible empty tables on the patio. When we requested one of those tables, we were told they were reserved. I spoke with the manager, who was also very rude and loud. She confirmed those tables were reserved. I informed her that I called to make a reservation and was told I couldn't. She answered very loudly, "they lied to you on the phone, reservations are for family only." We have never been treated like this at any venue, so we left. Luckily we found a lovely restaurant to dine at that evening. Stay away, this place is RACIST and RUDE!!! read more

Quality=Value, and hands-on / on-site owner/management ensures both. The Hellenic experience, from our first visit as a young family from Nassau County to the present day making the trip from northwestern Connecticut, is delivered by an expert staff from chef to cooks to hosts to servers always cheerful, always knowledgeable, always offering helpful suggestions. I enjoyed one of my favorites yet again on my most recent visit last weekend -- the spectacular horiatiki salad. And dolmades, of course. Heavenly, on Hellenic's sunny patio. I can't tell you how many times I've passed this restaurant and said to myself "You have to eat here one day". I did make an attempt once while working on the East end of Long Island, but the parking lot was so crowded that there was no chance of getting a parking spot quickly. Oh BTW Yelper Amanda J. was with me and she has very little patience. FYI Amanda J is also my daughter and she complains to her mother about every little thing. Now that I have that off my chest, back to the restaurant. So it's Saturday and I have a small project near this restaurant and Mrs. E is with me, so let's give it a go. Parking area not too crowded and although pretty busy we are seated quickly. First, our waiter is very professional. Explains the menu and makes some suggestions. Wife has a gyro platter, and I go with their specialty burger. Burger was huge. Half pounder, with lettuce tomato and pickles. Fries on the side. My wife loved her gyro and my burger was beyond excellent. For desert we had a trio of their home made Gelato. Oh my was that good. We also took home some of their home made baklava, for a snack later on. Somehow it just disappeared and I never had any. Hmmmmm interesting Mrs. E. No question I liked this restaurant and recommend it. Just remember in the summer it will be a long wait to get in but we'll worth it. read more

First stop in 30 years, better than I remembered. We just stopped in for appetizers and Greek wine. We started with the cauliflower croquettes with spicy feta dip. Very tasty. Then we ordered the dip platter to share. It was huge and we took so much of it home. The best Taramasalata I have had in years and the eggplant dip was outstanding. Both the hummus and split pea dip needed olive and salt. Love the Greek white wine. Wishing they had Ouzo of Plomaria on their menu. That's my favorite! Okay, this place is fantastic (but expensive). The food is phenomenal (they even make a really good burger), their lemonade will make a believer out of any doubters, and the gelato is to die for... because when you see how much you spent on your meal, you might just die. But the gelato ($11+) is so worth it. The staff is all super friendly, but the seating can be a problem. The vibe is largely "Eastern Long Island" with cornhole games and outdoor seating, but the covered area stays pretty comfortable even on extremely hot days. The food is worth it, especially with all of the comparatively good alternatives in downtown Greenport (where parking will be a nightmare). read more

Many years later, although I now live across the country, whenever I come back to NY to visit family and friends, we drive out to my all time favorite Greek Restaurant!! My last visit was this past August and as usual, it was a spectacular experience. I always order the Greek Salad, a Gyro and of course the world famous lemonade!! The gelato is out of this world!! I have been visiting Hellenic for close to 40 years. It was our go-to place for breakfast that my kids loved. The atmosphere sitting outside in public north fork was the vibe all the city folks sort. The lemonade is a must-have as well as the Gyro. So many authentic greek specialties all prepared with fresh natural ingredients. If you like Greek food and happen to be on the north fork this place should be on your bucket list. Right off of Rte 25 in East Marion a small snack shop turned restaurant is a timeless place in history. We've been driving past this place for years and finally gave it a try! We appreciated their covered outdoor dining option and large selection of menu items! The one food item I would have expected to see on the menu was Falafel but this was not the case. To start we ordered the Cauliflower Croquettes and Lentil Soup. Both were enjoyed! I like a tasting of several items off menus, so I ordered "The Small Plate" where I could order 5 items from the appetizer menu (also the option to order just 3 items). I ordered the following: 1. Fried Calamari with Skordalia sauce (excellent, especially the sauce which I'd never had before!) 2. Hummus (a bit bland in my opinion) 3. Pita with Tzatziki (excellent) 4. Dolmades (mushier than I'm used to but nice flavor) 5. Split Pea Salad (nice and fresh, especially with the dill!). Spouse ordered the burger and was very happy with it, very filling! This place is a hidden gem on the North Fork of Long Island NY. The restaurant has an ambiance that was made for relaxation both inside and outside. We ate our meal outdoors and started with the fresh squeezed lemonade. It was ice cold and delicious ! The waiter was very friendly and brought us our appetizers quickly. All the food was outstanding with a flavor that tasted like the Mediterranean. The entire experience was awesome. The kids had plenty of room to run around and play outside on the grass field while the Wife and I enjoyed sparkling wine and food that tasted like it came from Europe !
