Found this place while searching for what I was craving last weekend, Greek food. Immediately walking toward the establishment, the excitement grew. Walking in felt great, the ambiance gave homey vibes in the best way possible, it felt like I was about to get some great eats. The gentleman at the counter recommended I get the combo since he saw me eyeing the butternut-squash & apple soup that they had on special. Anywhere I see soups, it's a wrap. You are able sub out for fries or salad if you'd like that instead of the soup, plus you get a drink. I decided to go with the soup special & chose the chicken souvlaki. Flavors were there, chicken was tender, & in my opinion the simplicity was top tier on this. The butternut-squash & apple soup, was DELICIOUS. I would've taken a whole tub home. Freskos have been on my list FOREVER so I was SO EXCITED to finally make my way down to check them out after work the other night. It's super cozy inside, and so cute, for starters. I went with a sparkling water I've never tried before and then decided to try out some of my Greek food faves. The avgolemono is different than the type I've grown up with in the Midwest. I'd never had it with orzo before, but it was delish. The gyro was one of the best I have ever had. Ever. Had. That needed repeating. I don't know what kind of spices were used on that meat but oh my gosh it didn't even need anything else with it, you could eat it all on it's own. I paired the gyro with some of the lemon potatoes, which I chopped the leftovers into my breakfast eggs the next day and so I was able to enjoy them two days in a row. And the baklava. Let me tell y'all about the baklava. This baklava was so thick, it's been compared to lasagne. See my photos for evidence. It has now made its way into my top 5 favorite baklavas of all time. So this was an unexpected find in the New Haven area. I needed something to eat after going to New Haven for some errands and the off to a packet pick-up at the Multisports Academy near here, so I wanted somewhere I could sit down and eat while being close to where I could resume riding the bus back to Waterbury. Thankfully, this place fit the bill after looking at nearby places on Yelp. And apparently a 4.5 average too! Sign me up! It's nestled in a plaza right next to the Town Hall, so you do need to be looking for it if you're planning to eat here. It's not a big place either, so keep that in mind if you do choose to eat here. For nicer weather, it's actually a pretty good find if you do happen to get there. I did a meal for my lunch there. Chicken souvlaki, Greek fries, and a drink for $18 and change all told. Now, if you do need to take items out of your sandwich or what have you, you NEED TO MAKE SURE that you specifically tell them to leave that particular thing out. Else, prepare to turn into Messy the Slob because your food will get everything taking out the thing you didn't want. How do I know this? Because I don't eat tomatoes, so it was work taking those out and still eating the sandwich. Ignore that however and the food's really good! I don't have Greek food often, but they do seem to be really good here. The customer service is actually really attentive here more than anything. The guy who took my order was very patient and made sure I was served quickly. He attended my table a few times, asking how my food was, if I needed my tray taken, and even wished me a good day as I left. If this is a sign of how he normally does his job, then whoever trained him in customer service definitely did right. I only can't give a five because while I think I would need to come back and try more items from their menu to see what else they do well in. This place isn't one I usually get the chance to come by often, but for those who do live around New Haven, this is a good option, especially if you want to enjoy nice weather with outdoor seating. read more

I ordered the chicken souvlaki the Grandemere beans (spelling) and an order of lemon potatoes I have to say the serving sizes were quite small for $25. I should've had a huge meal with leftovers which was my plan. But actually ended up with no leftovers. The chicken souvlaki I checked the menu was supposed to have tzatziki sauce on it, There was no sauce and was quite dry. This made for a lackluster meal. What a great find! This small shop has some of the most flavorful gyros I've tried (and I've tried several in the NYC food carts). The meat was well seasoned and the tzatziki was creamy, had fresh dill, and was not runny which made it easy to eat. We also tried a slice of the portokalopita (orange cake) which was divine and a nice treat to close out the meal. No photo because we ate it too fast, but the syrup saturated the whole cake, yet it felt light and not soggy. The orange flavor was very fresh and aromatic! Highly recommend. After seeing numerous Instagram posts and stories about Fresko's, I decided I needed one of those Gyros. The ones packed with meat, and hugged by perfect pitas. Filled with things like tomatoes, fresh dill, red onion and tzatziki. I was on my way to an event, so I skipped the onions. The gyro was very good and I would definitely return to Fresko's to try more of their offerings. Also, if you don't have an event, I would get the onions. They would have added a nice contrasting texture. The inside is clean and nice. I liked the punch of blue neon. Service was friendly. If like me, you don't live near Hamden, I have good news for you. Fresko's is located close to a Route 15 Exit. That makes it perfect road trip food. If you live near Hamden, I would think you'd keep Fresko's in your regular rotation. Five Stars read more

The first thing that impressed me was the super cleanliness! A nice, bright space with blue neon signs and a warm ambiance. I was phyllo-ing hopeful! There were some lovely desserts on the counter for sale! Mmm! We went for lunch; the menu looked appealing. One of my tables mates ordered the gyro, which they say is their "go to" sandwich! Another ordered the avgolemono soup, the classic lemon chicken soup that the Greek folks are known for and a Greek salad. I asked for the spanakopita, another classic Greek dish! One problem! It was brought to me uncooked! The server said we have to bake it at home! What? Ummm, I think they could have surmised that we were there to eat in! And who serves uncooked food? We obviously came and sat down to dine here. The person at the counter could have informed us that they don't have ready made spanakopita available. They made no attempt to offer another entree nor did they seem to care about the mishap. I was instantly turned off and didn't order anything else. I was feta up! And of course asked to remove the dish from our bill. This was a real pita, because the food looked good, the prices were decent and it was clean, thus the 3 stars. I have loved Freskos since the beginning! When I worked across the street, I would go at least once a week for lunch. The food is so delicious and fresh. They also have a really good selection and lots of vegetarian options. The service is always great. It's never a long wait. They do have seating inside, but usually I'll get it and either eat outside or bring it home. I love the shrimp souvlaki. I don't eat it anymore, but also really good as the veggie rolls that are fried and the salads are great. I haven't had anything here that I didn't like. Say hi to Peter for me! read more

I love Greek food and what better place then Freskos in Hamden. Freskos is a cute Greek restaurant that serves delicious Mediterranean food. This restaurant reminded me of the delicious food I had on one of my trips to Greece. It's very authentic and all the dishes that we ordered were simply delicious. We ordered the Avgolemono Soup, Stuffed grape leaves, Classic Chicken Gyro, Classic Greek Salad and the delicious Baklava for dessert. The meat in the gyro was so flavorful and tender. Just the way I like it. Super fast and friendly service. Freskos is located in Hamden, close to Quinnipiac University and Sleeping Giant mountain. Freskos is a modern Greek restaurant that opened in Hamden, Connecticut in 2016. It was founded by actor and comedian turned restaurateur Peter Vouras. He has performed as an actor and comedian since 1994 with appearances in TV shows like "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and films like "Spider-Man 2". His time in show business actually inspired him to get into the restaurant business. It's no secret that many actors work in restaurants in between auditions and performances. Vouras actually comes from a family of restaurateurs. His father and grandfather were both Greek immigrants and both ran numerous restaurants in Meriden and Hartford. His uncles Jimmy and Frank also operated the Chateaubriand Restaurant in Dallas, TX. When Vouras opened Freskos, he wanted to give consumers a fresh, healthy spin on authentic Greek classics. The menu features staples such as gyro, chicken souvlaki, Greek fries, hummus, tzatziki, grape leaves, Greek salads, Greek-inspired burgers, and Greek desserts. A second location opened in New Haven in 2019 but closed the following year due to the pandemic. I recently stopped at Freskos one afternoon for lunch. I decided to go traditional and ordered the Classic Gyro (pronounced YEE-ro, not JAI-ro). It was a delicious combo of lamb and beef, tomato, red onion, tzatziki and fresh dill served on warm pita. I paired it with a side of delicious Greek Fries (served with feta chunks, spices and a lemon wedge). For dessert, I ordered a slice of Baklava Cheesecake. The baklava crust was some of the best I've had, and the cheese filling was light and fluffy. Both Vouras and his staff were very friendly and accommodating. "Here, you need to try one of these: it's my Grandmother's recipe," said Vouras as he handed me a delicious Kourabiethe (a traditional Greek shortbread biscuit). Very much wanted to like this place, it has a nice ambiance and fresh salad however as someone who has managed people operations for years it appeared that the employees did not have adequate training in execution. The souvlaki was very dry and squished and the soup was bland. Additionally the service felt as though the employees were confused and lacked professionalism in operations. They then had the audacity to follow us to our car to ask about the whereabouts of used trays we had placed on the trash receptacles, as is most commonly done in fast casual establishments. As to ensure these sorts of matters do not happen as , it would be best if they used visual management techniques and had a designated area for used trays. read more

Typically, my review for Freskos would be "Absolutely delicious"; however, we stopped by to pick up dinner a couple of weeks ago, which is something we do once or twice a month. They appeared to be training new people at the counter and it appeared in kitchen, as the regulars were not there. My son gets "chicken in a box" which should consist of the meat from Chicken Souvlaki. Instead, he received plain chicken with no spices and several pieces of chicken had the cartilage still attached, which really turned him off. He also ordered the Loukoumades, which are usually served warm with honey drizzled over them. The donuts were over cooked with very little honey and no powdered sugar. I don't know if something happened and it changed management and/or cooks, but we were truly disappointed this time around. read more

I've been to Fresko's twice now, and both times I've been impressed! The gyro is absolutely delicious, and I love their pita and tzatziki. The colossal gyro with French fries was an option I hadn't seen at other places, so my boyfriend tried it and loved it! But I made sure to follow up with my friend, and we were both very happy with the experience on both ends. I ordered via Doordash for an out-of-state meal train, choosing Freskos for their great reviews. I got a large Greek salad with chicken, the tofu souvlaki pita wrap, lemon potatoes, and baklava. The food arrived bang on time. My friend, who gravitates towards light and fresh flavors, was thrilled by it all, especially the sweet treat and the generous portions.
