Had a birthday party for my dad with 26 family members and friends and the team at Constantine's made it an awesome experience for everyone!! Starting with an appetizer spread with a refined selection of meats, cheeses vegies, fruit, and humous that our guests devoured - especially those who drove a long way. Then onto superb and delicious meal choices - salmon cooked to perfection, chicken Francese so so tender, meatloaf and eggplant parm like grandma's best recipe! All meals had generous portions - with a bunch of folks going home with takeaway tins of leftovers. Service by Linda and Marie was outstanding! No frills, WYSIWYG dining! The staff are super nice, kinda like old-school diner waitresses. If you are the conversational type and friendly, they take the time to chat. I LOVE the eggplant parm, amazingly delicious, huge portion and affordable. You also get pasta on the side and a salad. Just by looking at stars, I can tell who's local and who's from out-of-town. As a small, family-run restaurant, it has the quaint charm that caters to the residents in town - check out most of the other places like this in the area and you'll see this is the common theme. It doesn't have the glamour or glitz of a chain restaurant, nor does it need it. Owner/chef Steve succeeds in consistently producing good food in a friendly atmosphere. I rather sit in the dining room than the booths, but that's just a personal preference, not because of the condition of the benches, as one reviewer mentioned. Cross-talk between tables is not uncommon in the dining room, which, I think, adds to the small-town allure. My favorite is the moussaka - layers of ground meat, eggplant and potatoes covered with an egg-enhanced Béchamel, then baked. Eight times out of ten, this is what I'll order. One of the other two times, I'll order the Souvlaki, large chunks of marinated lamb grilled with vegetables over rice. The other time, I'll just jump around the menu, maybe trying a special if it catches my eye, or something from the seafood section. Everything has been presented well and served hot. The service is spectacular. Many of the servers have worked there for many years, and turnover is rare. When there is a change in staff, Steve and Eva take care to find someone who fits the place, instead of just getting a body to take orders. Servers take the time to learn your name, food and drink preferences, and something about you - and remember it for your next visit. Of course, if you're concentrating on your smart phone and give one or two word answers to questions, then you miss out on the friendliness. Lunch is my preferred time to eat here. It's busy enough so you don't feel like the only person in the place, but quiet enough where you can take your time. Dinner is a little more crowded, but you still won't feel rushed. They have a full, but small, bar, and they make a very good martini (as an aside, my frequent lunch companion likes hers with olives and onions - this is one of the few places around that actually has cocktail onions on the bar). Although they're closed on Tuesdays, they occasionally will open for dinner meetings for local civic groups. I've eaten here in that context many times, and while at most restaurants you don't expect the same service or quality that you would à la carte, the food presented has always of equal excellence. They have started opening on weekends for breakfast. While I've never tried it (I don't eat beef), the must-have on the dinner menu is the prime rib. The talk is that this alone makes a trip to Constantine's a requirement. If you're into good food and good service, Constantine's should be an entry on your culinary bucket list. If you're going to nit-pick decor, then stay away. read more

Went to Constantine's last night with family to celebrate my father's birthday. Got there @ 5:30, parking lot was full but place wasn't filled to capacity. They were pleasant upon arrival & put together 2 tables quickly to accommodate our slightly larger group. We were seated promptly. However, it was a rollercoaster ride from here on out. Part of our party arrived a few minutes later than us. While waiting for them the waitress came over & took our drink orders, bringing them quickly. The rest of our party arrived & we did not see our waitress again for app. 10 minutes. Eventually she showed up & took our orders & first or supplemental drink orders. Ok Here comes the rollercoaster ride. We got our salads & 2 out of 3 soups fairly quickly. The last soup we were told had to be heated up. 10 minutes later the last soup arrived. The salad was good, fresh, crisp, nice selection of vegetables. The soups looked good but one party said it was ok (but that could be accounted for by personal preference). Then we waited & waited for our entrees during which time the waitress was scarce except to stop by once to apologize for the wait. Then a gentleman, who apparently was the only person in the kitchen came out & apologized for the wait & we waited. Tho they explained they were short staffed in the kitchen it seemed they were quite used to apologizing for the wait. We finally got our entrees at about 6:55 pm, just before closing. They did not rush us - apparently tho closing is @ 7 they actually close around 8. They brought 2 small bowls of carrots for 6 people to share, they brought the proteins, they brought 2 baked potatoes & 2 mashed potatoes & then casually announced they ran out of baked potatoes (mine). I did not want any other options so I ended up without a potato. They forgot my daughter's French fries which they then brought her (my daughter was also the one who did not get her soup right away). Now to the food--4 of us apparently had no issues. My salmon was overcooked for what I asked for but was not dry & not bad otherwise. My daughter's prime rib was raw by the bone & partially inedible because of this. By this point, an hour and a half after we arrived, we just wanted to eat what we could. My sister kept saying it's not a 4-star NYC restaurant. We got that (my daughter & I live in NYC) but I have very minimal standards even for a very casual restaurant, I.e., I don't get neglected, I don't wait 1-1/2 hours for my entree & if the kitchen runs out of something I am told ahead of time-not when my entree comes out. Pluses-the strawberry rhubarb pie was phenomenal as was the rice pudding that my sister made me try. My daughter said the blueberry filling in her pie was delicious & my sister said her coconut custard pie was good. Bonus, because my mother told the waitress early on we were there for my father's birthday they put a candle in his rice pudding & sang happy birthday to him. All in all, until dessert my experience was meh-dessert bumped it up to good. read more

The staff is so friendly and the food is consistently good! Recommend the steamers on Thursday, pot roast on Friday, and prime rib on Saturday. You can't go wrong with getting your salad Greek style. We live nearby (close enough to walk) and were thrilled when they started serving breakfast on the weekends. We go every 2 or 3 weeks. The Greek omelet is delicious, pancakes are tasty and fluffy and everything else we have had is great. Prices are very reasonable. This is a nice family owned restaurant that serves both Greek and American food. We have been patronizing this place since we moved here a number of years ago. It is always clean and the servers and kitchen staff are very friendly. A number of them have been there a while and get to know your preferences. The seating is high back wooden booths with vinyl seating and dark wood tables and chairs. During our most recent visit I noticed they reupholstered the booths and added some bar stools at the small bar. They have a small but nice selection of your basic liquor as well as a decent selection of American and a few red and white Greek wines. We usually come here for lunch during the week on one of my days off and do a leisurely lunch starting with a cocktail or two and then order lunch. The waitresses are happy to go at our pace. I usually opt for the Greek dishes but have had a number of other things from the menu. The stuffed grape leaves are my favorite app and are served warm with a nice tzaziki sauce. The Greek salad is also great with a tasty Greek vinaigrette dressing. They have a few other Greek dishes such as moussaka , souvlaki, and spanakopita. They are all homemade. The baklava, a sweet honey syrup phyllo dough pastry with crushed walnuts is also homemade. They offer regular American dishes that are always done well. I usually see a much older crowd patronizing this restaurant. I believe it's because they get quality food for a very reasonable price. We love coming here. read more

My wife and I have recently relocated to neighboring Southbury, Connecticut, and have been familiarizing ourselves with area restaurants. We have dined in many establishments over our first three weeks in New Haven County, including highly and often recommended places like the wonderful Good News Cafe and Marketplace, both in Woodbury and both very good. But, part of the fun we have is uncovering places we've not heard of and that have not made the lists of recommendations others have shared; even better, unassuming side of the road gems, that sparkle when you poke your nose in the door... Constantine's was just such a find! Hardly Greek, but an appealing sounding special was Eggplant Parmigiana and it was as good as any I've ever had. Even more surprising was a stellar New England Clam Chowder: rich and creamy and full of succulent, tender clams. And more traditionally, my wife loved her lamb gyro-wrap. I had a fairly priced, full glass of Cabernet Sauvignon and my wife enjoyed a generously poured Kettle One, which brings me to the "Fifth Star" of my review, the lovely, charming French-Canadian hostess/waitress, Marie. With all of that to attract readers to visit Constantine's, I'll close by saying the ambiance with twinkling, sparkling lights strung throughout, was as enticing as the food, the beverage and the wonderful Marie. read more

This restaurant is the perfect example of never judging a book by its cover. While the restaurant is adorable, quaint, and has that small town feel, the food here is really fantastic across the board. I'm from New York and yet I rarely find food of this quality and freshness at a comparable restaurant in the city. I'm also Italian and grew up with great home cooked meals so I'm always hesitant to eat at Italian restaurants. Yet, whenever I'm in Woodbury, I come here. The pork chops are THE BEST I've had. If you like pork, order them. The chicken francaise is tender and delicious. Their tomato sauce is a must-try. The chicken parm is nuts. Their avgolémono soup is so good. I'm not Greek but wow, it's superior to all other ones I've tried. I sound like a broken record but I'm serious. If you haven't tried this place yet, eat here. I have been going to Constantines for over 20 years. The food is always fresh, homemade, and delicious. It is also reasonably priced. On Saturday, they have a Prime Rib Angus Beef special that beats anything offered around, both in quality and price. You will not find a better deal, hands down, anywhere! Get there early or reserve a piece because it goes quick! If you enjoy real Greek food, trying the souvlaki, or moussaka is a must! Their daily special are fantastic, as are their home made soups. The butternut squash and gaspacho along with the avgolemono are a few of my favorites. Unfortunately I am writing a review because I felt misled by the numerous 4-5 star reviews for this restaurant. My husband and I went to Constantines for lunch with our 5 month old on a Saturday afternoon after passing by the restaurant many times and wondering how the place was & seeing mostly good reviews on yelp. Inside, the best word to describe the entire place is dingy. The booths and chairs must be original from the 1980s. Our booth had black electrical tape holding it together. There was a layer of dust on the pictures and decor. The booth was too narrow to even fit the car seat and had to put it on the floor (not a big deal, but annoying). There were maybe 2-3 tables occupied, probably all residents from heritage village. After waiting 10 minutes to be waited on (the waitress didn't see us), we both ordered the lamb gyros with fries. The water served to us smelled and tasted odd, like it was from a bad well (I don't know of a better way to describe the water. My husband refused to drink it). The food arrived in a mostly timely manner. The gyro was average at best (have had better and worse), the fries were bland and unremarkable. We quickly left, feeling like we needed to thoroughly wash our hands after the experience. Two stars instead of one because the food itself wasn't disgusting, just not remarkable in any way, and the staff was friendly once they realized they had more customers to serve. read more

Wonderful, wonderful place. Great eats at fair prices. My family and I, of several generations, have been eating here for decades. Family lives nearby, and my kids always ask for it by name (and dish!). My family goes ape for the Chicken Francaise - a Wednesday dinner special. You can ask for it other nights, they will do it if they can. They also do a Sole (fish) Francaise. Chicken Valdostana isn't a common menu item, but it is on the menu here and my go-to dish. We came here based on the rave reviews, and were severely disappointed with our visit. Apparently some reviewers idea of "As Good As It Gets" is a lot different than ours. Upon entering we were met with a foul odor which reminded me of a musty old house with pets. The booth where we were seated needed cleaning, and the floors were filthy. After looking around we saw that there was dust on the ledges, and a few spider webs hanging around. I have to assume that the lack of cleanliness in the dining area was the primary culprit of the musty smell. Usually, this would be my cue to walk out the door, but I kept clinging to the hope that all the rave reviews would make the dirt and the smell worth it. The lunch menu was amusing. Most of it was comprised of heavy platters that would be better served for a dinner than a lunch. The limited selection of hot and cold sandwiches, most of which could easily be made at home (tuna fish, roast beef, ham & cheese), was woefully uninspired. After reading the menu I again felt the urge to leave, but hung in there hoping for the best. Not wanting a heavy meal in the middle of the day, the three of us opted for the gyro sandwich, a cheeseburger and some other forgettable fare. The bread from the bread basket was old. Both the gyro meat and burger were charcoal-broiled which gave it the old Burger King/Hardees flavor. The meat from the gyro wasn't sliced off the spit as traditional gyro meat is. It was pre-packaged patties that were just thrown on the grill. But it was the tzatziki sauce that killed it. The sauce was incredibly sour, which overpowered any flavor the meat might have had. I wish I could have washed down the food with the cranberry and seltzer I ordered, but they used tonic instead of seltzer which rendered it undrinkable. The water tasted foul. No one finished their meals. Upon looking around at all the other patrons, we saw that the youngest person there was in their late 80's. The old folks seemed to be enjoying their meals at least. The rest rooms needed cleaning as well. The rusty fixtures and dated decor need serious attention. The only positives I can mention were the service and prices. Service was relatively fast, and friendly. Unfortunately, we found no other redeeming qualities here. Given the overall lack of cleanliness in the front of the house, I don't even want to imagine what the kitchen looks like. I just read that another reviewer mentioned dirty silverware and found an open packet of butter in her bread basket (obviously they are "recycling" uneaten bread), yet still gave the place 4 stars. Guess I've just learned my lesson about trusting the reliability of rave reviews. read more

We had the worst experience ever! Ordered an ice tea on our first and last visit about two weeks ago and it was thick and slimy. Their soda machine obviously wasn't cleaned out in forever maybe never. I was thirsty and took a big sip and it was disgusting! At this point we should have left but we stayed and ordered. I ordered the fried fish combination and it was over cooked and dry. The waitress came up to us and said glad you enjoyed your food. But she never asked me if I enjoyed the meal she just assumed and it wasn't from her taking away an empty plate. My husband's fish dish was ok he gave it about a 7. We weren't even asked if we would like desert she just gave us our bill. I was glad to get the bill, pay and leave. By the time we got home I was sick to my stomach and had several trips to the bathroom throughout the night. It had to be the rancid ice tea. read more

If I had reviewed this restaurant two years ago, my review would have been very different. We've been loyal patrons for over five years. However, over the past year, we've noticed that the portion size of the prime rib has been significantly reduced, and I suspect that it is being microwaved prior to serving. The salads are so small now, they look like they came from the bottom of a hamster cage. To add to the overall negative experience, the tomato sauce is more like an onion sauce which permeates everything it touches. Not a fan of the year-round Christmas lights either. Very disappointing as we really came here because of the quality and value of the prime rib. We were able to overlook the shabby booths and floor but now, I think it's over for us. read more

Just left the restaurant. VERY disappointed!! Companion ordered soup and fried chicken. I ordered shrimp scampi and a salad. I received my salad and waited and waited for his soup. Finally I had to get up and ask for it. Our meals arrived and I had to ask for bread. My scampi was tasteless. I could not taste any garlic and there was barely any sauce, making the pasta extremely dry. I had to get up and get grated cheese to try to add flavor. Not much help. Pull off to the side of the road onto a classy gravel lot, enter into a pretty, soothing restaurant that splits in two directions. The kitchen stands warmly before you and there is a real sense of welcome. It's a warm place to sit and have a quiet, or romantic, dinner.
